Why does airport extreme need hard reset after power outage

Airport extreme is unresponsive after interruptions in power and requires a hard reset to get working again.  It will also freeze during heavy usage from multiple computers and then a hard reset is necessary to get it working again.  It is becoming a chore.

The obvious answer is that if you are using firmware 7.5.2, downgrade to 7.4.2.
Otherwise if you can simulate a power fail by pulling the plug and still have the problem then
If you are still under warranty, take it back...

    Why does Airport Extreme stop working when I plug in a USB hard drive?  The USB drive has its own power supply.  I've tried isolating the hard drive from Airport using a powered USB hub to no avail.

    The USB port on the AirPort Extreme is borderline as far as its ability to supply adequate power to a hard drive. Another way of saying the same thing is that this is not a high power USB port, like you would find on a computer.
    Your 2TB drive likely requires a bit more current than the USB port on the AirPort Extreme can supply. It is also possible that the drive's firmware may not support a network USB connection....only a "local" connection to a computer. Check with Seagate support on that possibility.
    Try using a powered USB hub with the 2TB drive....and make sure that the drive is formatted correctly in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32....which the AirPort Extreme USB port can accept.

    Possibly, but it may also indicate that the communication between the modem and the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is faulty.
    I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
    Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
    While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
    After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
    Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
    Power-up the base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    Power-up your computer(s).
    In this basic configuration, computers connected to the base station, either by wire or wireless (as appropriate for the base station type), should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Airport Extreme not hard-resetting.

    I have been trying to reset my Airport Extreme to factory settings. We forgot the base station password and accessing keychain for password information is not possible as we sold the iMac it was configured with.
    Here are steps I've taken:
    I broke power from the Airport Extreme, then plug it back in. I then hold the Reset button, it begins to flash a green colour rapidly, after releasing it, it stops blinking green and resumes the steady yellow blinking which is much slower. It remains still named and still requires the password to modify settings.
    I even tried holding it and seeing if I can connect to it while holding it down...nope. Still no luck. Still remains named.
    Perhaps I'm missing something here. Anyone have any ideas? The idea is to restore to factory settings so we can reconfigure it (and of course make sure we have the password securely stored somewhere).

    I am not sure why you are posting in the TIme Capsule area.. but anyway.. factory reset..
    Hold in reset button.. before you power on.. make sure you feel the switch click on.. Do not apply too much pressure though or you will bend the arm.. I have seen people who think when it says press it means a 10 ton press.. no .. just enough pressure to make the switch make contact.. then power on the AEBS with your third hand.. or get a friend to plug it into the wall, flick the wall switch. Keep holding reset until the front led flashes rapidly.. then release and wait for it to reboot.
    If it still doesn't work.. you have broken it..

    My AirPort Extreme (Mod A1521) shuts down intermittently for no apparent reason.  I was purchased at Best Buy in May 2014. I started noticing this issue a couple of weeks ago.  I have not changed my setup or made any modifications to my network or peripherals.  I am able to reboot the device without issue.
    Any insights would be greatly appreciated . . . thank you!

    If the AirPort Extreme shuts down, and you have checked the power cord, wall AC jack, etc. to verify that all is well......then the AirPort Extreme is defective and in need of replacement.
    Take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store....if you have one near you....or contact Apple Support directly to start the process.

    Everytime there is a power loss at my house my AE dorsnt work for 4-5 weeks. Is there any easy fix, so I dont have to wait for 4-5 weeks every time?

    Your AirPort Extreme is likely defective.
    If it is in warranty, ask Apple to replace it. If it's not, you will need replace it, as a power outage should not do any more than turn off the AirPort until the power comes back up. This would really be the same as if you pulled the power cord from the back of the device and then plugged it back in later.

    I live in a country where we experience frequent power outages. I have noticed that after almost every outage the range of my Airport Extreme goes down to about 2 meters. Restarting both computer and airport has no effect. The only way I have found to get it working normally again is to get my computer to within a few feet and change the channel using the Airport Utility. It doesn't seem to matter which channel I select, just anything different to what is was previously set to. Once the airport has restarted, everything works fine again. The problem is, my wife's technical expertise is not very high so if I'm not there she has to stop work.
    Has anybody experienced this, and if so is there a fix?

    That does sound strange. If you don't have your AirPort Extreme channel setting to "Automatic", you might try that.
    You might also consider investing in a UPS unit for your AirPort unit.

  • Pegasus R4 Will Not Reset After Power Outage

    I have a Pegasus R4 hard drive system connected by a Thunderbolt cable to an iMac. It has bee functioning flawlessly for several months. We had a power outage during the day and ever since the R4 has not been able to reset. Anyone have any advice out there on this issue.

    Not trying to be a stick in the Mud here but you guys that are serious gamers need to always keep a close eye on the weather. If there is the possibility of a storm you must have an APC or Battery Backup. Just a Power Strip is sometimes not enough. Of course you have No Control over Power Companies cutting your Power and causing a Power Surge that fries your equipment. Please Please be aware of the weather I cannot tell you how many things I have cooked over the years by not taking this advise. It can save you thousands of dollars.

    In africa we have lot of power outages.
    Working at a very big company with more than 300 switches can be challenging if you have to bring them up by manually rebooting few of them on the property.
    The switches are directly connect via fiber using LH/LX SFP connector to a 4500 Core switch which is on a UPS and does not go down during the outage; only the access layer switches will then need manual reboot....
    Please assist in having a permanent fix on this issue.

    I updated to 10.7.3 today and I set Safari up. I turned off my computer and later when I turned it back on Safari was completely reset and all the settings I had set were gone. This also happens when I quit or exit out of Safari too. What is the problem, this is getting annoying because I have reset Safari every time I reboot my computer.

    Disabling the Lion (v10.7) "resume" feature may help...
    Open System Preferences > General
    Deselect:  Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
    Restart your Mac.

  • Airport Extreme usb hard drive connection loss after closing finder window

    I just did a software update on my MacBook Pro and now I am experiencing a weird Airport Extreme usb hard drive issue. I can see the name of my airport extreme in the Shared section of my finder window. However when I click on it, the finder indicates the it's connecting, but it stops immediately and displays the 'Not Connected' message. When I click on the 'Connect As' button, I am prompted to enter my password and if I click 'Connect', it just spins out endlessly. However, when I re-enter the password and press Connect, my usb drive mounts. I can view, access and use the drive's contents, but if I close the finder window, the connection drops and I have to re-connect. What else is weird, is that once I see my drives, the finder indicates that I am connected as another user(not a user native to this computer). This issue did not exist before my software update.
    My software log update indicates that the following items have been installed:
    Canon Printer Software Update 2.3 and Security Update 2010-003.
    I suspect it has something to do with the Security Update. Is there a way I can revert to the previous security version? Or is there any other solution that could help me avoid re-connecting to my airport extreme usb hard drives?
    I will really appreciate any feedback.

    Sure there's a »fix« with Apple software. You'll need to install the Developer Tools (Xcode) from the Snow Leopard Install DVD, though.
    After you've done that, you can use "SetFile" to clear the Alias bit from the misbehaving Volume:
    /usr/bin/SetFile -a a /Volumes/<YourExternalDriveName>
    Please keep in mind that using this command might be dangerous, so don't try this solution unless you feel confident on the command line.   • Help my AE 5th gen needs hard reset daily.  Every am status light blinking orange, I unplug modem and AE and replug and light goes green. Network ok for few hours then needs reset. Any suggestions?

    Setup - TWC MODEM w/latest docsis set in ethernet only mode - AE 5th gen create a network mode - cat 6 connection to 2nd gen AE in extend wireless network mode.  This setup work great for several months, now 5th gen AE needs to be reset several times a day. 

    I realized I only used the abbreviation AEB vs. Airport Extreme. Caught this after the 15 minute edit restriction. Added in case folks are searching by Airport Extreme. In addition, the solution I setup is a Roaming Network solution vs. "one network". Enjoy!

    I might be asking a really dumb question now, I have a Mac Pro, a PC my sons use and a laptop my wife uses. The PC and laptop both run XP Pro.
    I have my Airport Extreme set up and working well with my BT Home Hub acting as my modem only - that went much easier than I thought.
    All I want to do is to set up a network - my Mac (wired) to my Airport Extreme with a Canon Printer and external hard drive. I also want to be able to share files on the PC and Laptop (wireless) with other users as well as the printers. Ideally, i'm looking for a video website that will easily show how to set this up. I appreciate I may need to view several clips to get this sorted. I have tried YouTube without much success.
