Why does backup on airport time capsule also save on mac

I have just bought a new airport time capsule.  After the initial backup of entire mac the subsequent backups are saving to my mac as well as the airport time capsule.  There is a new section in in the storage as "backup" which increases after each backup.  Anyone know how to stop this.  Thanks

The TM will backup to local disk whenever the TC is not available.. this is per design.
Turn it off please see instructions here.

I think you might also be better off controlling the backups yourself.
Set backup to off. and do it when you are near the TC.

  • Mirror or backup one Airport Time Capsule 2TB to another over the internet?

Hello, is it possible to mirror, or backup, one Airport Time Capsule 2TB to another, at a remote location over the internet?
    Much appreciated.

Copying a backup is actually a poor way to make reliable backups.. because an error creeps into the backup and the copy simply replicates it.
I would use a USB drive plugged directly into the computer, and use a software like CCC to make a bootable clone.. I tell you honestly.. it is just wonderful when you have disk issue in a computer to be able to plug in a hard drive and boot the computer from it. Especially Macs with their hard to reach drives. Changing a drive on a PC laptop or desktop computer is usually trivial. It is far from trivial in a Mac.
Use two USB drives and swap them over to offsite weekly. Then use cloud for incremental in between.. or a combo of the TM .. TM can backup to multiple destinations.

  • OS X 10.8.5 - Unable to backup to AirPort Time Capsule

I have just updated to OS X 10.8.5 on a 2006 Macbook Pro - and now I cannot perform a backup on my AirPort Time Capsule.
It asks me to confirm the AirPort Time Capsule that I wish to backup to - but this does not seem to be working and I cannot currently perform the backup.
Immediately after this failure - I was able to successfully back up another iMac to this very same AirPort Time Capsule:
    - so the AirPort Time Capsure appears to functioning normally.
The iMac is still running on OS X 10.5.4 - and has not been updated to 10.8.5
Is there a problem with  backing up to the AirPort Time Capsule using the new OS X 10.8.5 ?

I should also add that I have previously been successfully backing up from the Macbook Pro onto the AirPort Time Capsule for many years without problem.
It is only just now that I cannot backup after having updated to OS X 10.8.5

  • My Time Machine does not recognize Airport Time Capsule 2TB

I just connect my new Airport Time capsule 2TB and the wifi work fine in the whole house.
But Time machine does not recognize my Airport time capsule. It remain stuck on my ex baxkup My Book. If I press select disk or option nothing happen . If I click on remove backup disk nothing happen. I want to use Airport Time capsule as my back up disk.
    Thank you for your help.

Do a full TM reset.. see A4 here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might also need to manually mount the TC disk..
In finder use Go, Connect to server in the top menu.
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress (using the actual name or IP of course).

  • Ipad backup to airport time capsule

Well i threw down the green backs for the airport time capsule 3tb.  The best buy guys swore up and down that I could back up my ipad3 to it.  I decided to err on the side of caution and read the manuals before breaking the celophane on the box.  I cannot find any references to being able to back up anything other than mac pc's.  Anyone tried it yet?

iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPod back up to iTunes on your Mac or PC.....or.....to iCloud.
Then, if you back up your computer to the Time Capsule, everything is backed up, including the iOS backups stored as a part of iTunes.
it is not possible using Apple supported methods to back up an iOS device directly to the Time Capsule....or any other hard drive for that matter.
The best buy guys swore up and down that I could back up my ipad3 to it.
You might want to review this Apple support document with them. Maybe they know something that Apple does not?

  • Airport Time capsule not found on mac when using AirPort Utility

I just purchased an AirPort Time Capsule to back up my files from my Mac.  I have been able to set up the wireless portion, but when trying to access the backup portion through TimeMachine I cannot select my base.  I am able to see it on my iPhone, but not on Mac.  I have updated everything.  Is this a known problem with the transition to Yosemite?  Any suggestions?

Dead spot on.. Yosemite is pain plus..
I recommend you start over in your TC setup..
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
ie Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 and TCwifi for basestation and wireless respectively.
Even better if the issue is more wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking. If the TC is main router it will not be an issue.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the laptop itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.

  • HT1178 Can you backup to same time Capsule with PC and Mac

How do I backup to same Time Capsule with both PC and Mac

    - backup iMac to TC and hook up HD to USB port on TC to backup PC laptop
Hmmm not better IMHO.. as long as you disk image the TC.. and the amount of space you have far exceeds total usage on both computers.. For the TM backup on the Mac you want TC area to be at least 3x the used space on the drive.. leaving out VM or bootcamp partitions if you use them.
Plus enough space to back up the PC laptop a couple of times over.
USB hard drive is fairly slow.. but should be ok for backup over wireless.. just be aware you cannot unplug the USB drive and use it direct unless you format it FAT32 which is very poor format. So first backup is going to be slow.
    - backup iMac directly to HD thru firewire and backup PC to HD hooked up to Airport Extreme
If you don't already have a TC then this is fine. Firewire local disk is much faster than network backup even over gigabit.
Any of your options would work ok.. doing disk image on the TC is most difficult to get working and limits the hard disk space. Balance out what you already own network wise with what you need.. there are plenty of routers now with USB ports that will deal directly with windows using NTFS.. if you end up using firewire local disk to the imac..

  • How do I delete files when message is hard drive is full.  I have a airport  time capsule connected to my mac air

How do I delete files to free up space from my hard drive?
My Apple Airport Time Capsule is connected to my 11" Mac Air .  I was under the impression that connecting the time capsule would free up my hard drive to provide infinite space to the internet.

If you'd like to keep copies of them, put them onto an external drive and back it up as well; if you're using Time Machine, remove that drive from the list of items set to be excluded from the backup. If the drive's not formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu and use the Disk Utility to erase it.
If you've done that or don't want to keep them, throw them away and empty the Trash.
The Time Capsule doesn't back up to the iCloud.

  • Why does Tiger always mount Time Capsule disks automatically?

I have a Time Capsule (early 2009) with wireless connections to an iMac running OS 10.5.7 Leopard and a PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4.11 Tiger. The G4 always automatically mounts on the desktop the TC Data disk (i.e., backup volume disk) and any disks physically connected to the iMac. Even if I unmount them, they will come back to the G4 desktop. The iMac requires manual mounting of disks except for the Data disk which mounts automatically during a backup. How do I stop the G4 from automatically mounting disks?

I had looked in the G4 (OS 10.4.11) System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and found an item called Airport Base Station Agent listed as an application. This also appears in the Login Items on the iMac (OS 10.5.7). So I didn't see that as the culprit. I didn't see the Time Capsule listed in the Login items on either computer. Maybe this application or some preference file is corrupted on the G4. I don't know how Airport Base Station Agent got installed so I am reluctant to remove it and later find out that wireless no longer works. Maybe when Airport Utility is installed? I was unable to locate it using Find File. The G4 remounts the Time Capsule disk on a Restart so it must have something to do with the Login. But I don't know what.

  • Why does wireless on my Time Capsule (2TB, 3rd Gen) drop the wireless network now?

Starting a couple of weeks ago, my Apple Time Capsule (2TB, 3rd Gen) has been dropping the wireless network almost daily.  I end up pulling the power cord to restart it.  I've had the device for what I think has to be about a year and a half already, and it's been working flawlessly until now.  I have it on 802.11N (dual-band), using WPA2, with an average of about 7-8 client devices at any one time throughout our home.  The problem doesn't appear to be any one client, since all lose connectivity at the very same time.  The Time Capsule LED is still green when it's down, and again restarting it solves the problem.  The device is out in a well ventilated area, and doesn't feel like its overheating.  Devices using Ethernet to connect are unaffected (other than losing visibility to wireless network elements).  It can occurn at any time, day or night, seemingly at random.  The Airport Utilty advises that I have the latest firmware version (7.5.2).
Anyone have any idea whats going on?  Having similar problems?  Fix, workaround, suggestion?

Try setting the wireless to manual and fixed channels.. the auto channel swapping does cause issues.. I would also give different names to 2.4ghz and 5ghz so you know clearly which wireless you are connected to.
But sometimes they do just go bad.. power supply is not robust. They do become unreliable.

  • Airport time capsule does not appear within wi-fi networks on my OSX neither on my IOS devices, even though the backup for my OSX is on progress. why it does not appear?

Airport time capsule does not appear within wi-fi networks on my OSX neither on my IOS devices, even though the backup for my OSX is on progress. why it does not appear?
Is it because the backup on progress?

Hmmm.. ok.. well you are kind of on your own.. purchasing from another country leads to problems.. especially as the TC itself is regional .. all the setup applies to the region it is sold in.
Make sure you are using ipv6 in the computers..
    See
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
The 6.3 utility will not work without it.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Do a full reset and start over.
But there are no more controls.. you cannot set mode..
You can set wireless channels.. so do .. try different wireless names for the different bands.. and set fixed channels.. whatever your country allows, usually 2.4ghz you can use 1, 6, 11 but 13 maybe an option as well. 5ghz is much less clear and there are more variation. Just set to one channel and then another.
Set WPA2 Personal security with a 10-20 character password .. pure alphanumeric mix of upper and lower case and numbers.

  • My airport time capsule will no longer allow our iPhones or vizio smart tvs to connect to it, though my iPad air mac mini and mac air connect fine. Why is this? does a recent software update have anything to do with it?

my airport time capsule will no longer allow our iPhones or vizio smart tvs to connect to it, though my iPad air mac mini and mac air connect fine. Why is this? does a recent software update have anything to do with it?

What model is your TC? What is the firmware?
I recommend you do a factory reset and use short names.. not apple recommended names.
Short.. 2-20 characters .. less than 10 even better.
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric.
Set fixed channels for 2.4ghz wireless.. test with 11, 6, 1 at least.
That often helps.. if not and is old, ie Gen1-4 go back to 7.6.1 firmware which is far more solid.

  • I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups and it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I purchased a 3TB Airport Time Capsule to use with my Mac running latest Maverics. After 8 hours been able to configure the box using Ethernet connection but now I want to move my current backups from my small driveand it wants authentication but no box is available to provide my administrator name can anyone help ?

I overcame the permissions by allowing both paths to have read and write access to anyone but that didnt solve it until I copied it into the DATA directory which I created on the Airport Time Capsule.
I had already discovered the TIME MACHINE How to transfer backups but I am struggling still with the item and cannot currently get it to work. My setup seems to have created a wireless link to my router which is what I wanted and in that set up there are three options. I have simply gone for the extension of my network. I ignored the other option there which I cannot remember something like DNS? That may be the problem becasuse when I remove the Ethernet connector it just doesnt go anywhere.
I have also found I cannot update my TIME MACHINE software (currently 1.3) as although Apple tell me I should be able to set backups hourly daily or weekly I have only ever been able to run it hourly when i would prefer longer intervals so thought an update might be necssary.
Also tried to get an update for my Airport Utility (Currently 6.3.2 but cannot find one even though I have read there might be one available and again this might be the problem.
Have reset the Time Capsule now about a dozen times.
Following the instructions and trying to copy my existing backup it suggests you need to copy it to the root directory but that is when I get some sort of security issue and I found I could only get it to accept if I dragged my .backupdb to the DATA directory on the Time Capsule. I dont even know if I do this it will work when I come to use it.
I therefore found your reply of no more help than i had discovered but I hope you return to read this note because I really do need some help.
I am intending starting again in the next couple of days and fully documenting what I do and what I see and then as I suspect it will be no different and I will then seek an appointment at the Apple Store in Trafford Centre and if that proves unsuccessful then I still have time to return and become a dissatisfied customer with Apple for the first time in a long experience with Apple. I have noticed frightening notes on the conversations which point to problems of Mavericks working with Airport Time Machine!! So in the end it might not be me doing anything wrong. Unfortunately you do feel left out in the dark sometimes that is why I hope you can respond with a solution?

  • Data folder can not be opened in finding " AirPort Time Capsule " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist .

    Hi
I have a " AirPort Time Capsule " (firmware 7.7.3) When I try to open the data folder in "finder". Then I got the message  " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist". I have a lot of data and I can understand why I get this message?
    Anyone who can help? Thanks..
    Br. Bo

Get a USB drive of 2TB or more.. assuming your TC is 2TB. Either preformatted Mac or plug into your Mac and format it standard Mac OS Extended Journaled in disk utility.
Do a full archive of the TC. You do this using airport utility. Do not click the erase disk.. I marked in green.. just the archive.. that is to backup the internal disk to the USB disk. It is not fast.. take it that the process will go at around 40-50GB/hr.
Once you complete the archive .. it is a direct image of the data on your TC.. you can then plug it into your computer directly.. and then try and open the files you lost.. if you cannot open them.. open disk utility and fix the permissions.
    http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/13/repair-disk-permissions-mac-os-x/
Or try the methods apple recommends..
OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac
It is possible to fix things on the USB drive because it is locally mounted.. but you cannot fix it on TC which is network drive.

  • Airport Time Capsule 2TB - Problem with Backups

    Hello everybody,
I´m from Germany but I hope you understand my english. I have got a problem with my new Airport Time Capsule 2TB. I want to use it as a data storage, where all my pictures and videos are accessible via WIFI.
Copying the datas was no problem but now I want to make a backup of all the datas. For this purpose i created a RAID 0 out of two 1TB external hard drives. I connected the bay with these two hard drives in it with the Time Capsules USB interface. The problem is that no drives were displayed in the airport-programm ... Also non of my other USB hard drives were found. Only the Time Capsule´s partition "data" got found...
In the time machine program I can´t see the Time Capsule, so I can´t do a backup on the normal way... Even the "hard drive - program" from OS X didn´t show the Time Capsule.
It looks like they don´t want to know anything about each other ...
So, how can I realize to do a backup of the datas saved on my Time Capsule?
Thank you for your answers and sorry if my english is bad in some cases.

    Ok.. can understand..
You have two problems.. maybe 3.
    1. Time Machine (TM) does not work on network drives which includes Time Capsule.. so you simply cannot backup your pictures from a TC to a backup location using TM. It only works on locally connected drives.. you can use an alternative software like Carbon Copy Cloner .. I did check superduper but in the past it was not able to backup network source drives. You will need to check if the situation has improved.
    2. The Time Capsule will not accept raid array disks.. it must be a standard hard disk on a USB drive that it has drivers for.. and that is far from every model out there. So not all plain single USB disk works.. almost no array disks work.
    3. Your iphoto library if that is what you mean by pictures should not be on a network drive.. apple says it is going to be corrupted.
YMMV.. it is dangerous and only a matter of time.. if the pictures and videos are raw from camera that is fine.. it is only the iphoto (or aperture) library that is at risk.
