Why does "enter time machine" crash my computer?
The title is pretty descriptive. The "crash" is that I get the spinning beach ball of death and over the course of a few seconds my machine becomes completely non-responsive to input (keystokes stop working, then the wiggling the mouse stops working). I have do hold down the power button to reset the machine after that. Although I'm quite familiar with http://pondini.org/OSX/Home.html I don't see that anything readily addresses "Time Machine crashes my whole OS". Any ideas? Thanks!
Here a log of what happens. I got this same effective log in two different situations: first when I ran an attempted backup, then again basically the same when I changed the computer name and tried again. That second attempt is probably pretty telling since there is no sparsebundle with the new computer name, meaning the error of "diskimagealreadyattached" cannot be true.

HT3275 Why does my Time Machine say No Latest Backup even though I ran a backup?
I have backed up my MacBook Pro several times to an external drive by following all the directions. But, the Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None" Latest Backup: None, Next Backup: Today 11:19 AM. I have selected the drive and turned it on. Has it backed up? Shouldn't it say there was a latest backup?
Enter Time Machine, via the application, to see if it has backed up. If not try C2/A4 in the first linked article.

Time Machine Crashing the Computer
I just set up a 5 terabyte Raid tower striped 0 connected with a Sata II card. I'm trying to backup a 2 terabyte external firewire drive.
I've tested the raid and have written 1 terabyte to the raid without any problems whatsoever. However, when I throw TM into the mix it crashes the finder after 30 to 50 GBs have been written. The computer is totally unresponsive and I get the grey screen of death after a few minutes.
Machine is last years Mac Pro with 12 Gigs. The machine is extremely stable.
Anyone have suggestions, both the firewire and raid seem to work perfectly.… since I can't edit this post anymore, I'll tell how in continues here. After more reading, the idea struck me to sign out of iCloud in System Preferences. That stopped the alleged Moving, but didn't restore any data. Neither does restoring the user/Library/Calendar folder via Time Machine. So, the question would now bifurcate into: How can I start using iCloud without losing data? And: Why can't I restore Calendar data the described way, and what do I need to do?

Why does my time machine backup fail
my estimated backup size is 228GB (I have excluded files under options in time machine)
I have 319GB available on my time machine on a 320GB disk
when i try and backup i get the following message...
This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 337.88 GB but only 319.30 GB are available. Time Machine needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Open Time Machine preferences to select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files.
i have erased all backups, erased and reformatted the disk. I have heard time machine needs some 'extra space' but this is 40%+ more - this is ridiculous
the main issue is how the **** does it think the backup could be 337GB, when the estimated backup is only 228GB?!?!I would just get a bigger external drive.
The actual size the backup requires should be correct..
I would suggest if you need a backup and TM is not working download SuperDuper and do a disk image to at least have a backup.. the size of that image will give you a far better idea of what size TM backup should be.. but remember TM grows and grows.. the disk should be 3x as large as the total used size in the computer.. smaller than that and TM will not really do what you want.
As for Mountain Lion failing.. yes.. ML has real issues.. reboot the network, starting modem first and then router/TC and clients.. a full restart is required and wait a couple of min between devices..
Look at the Mountain Lion discussions area for TM issues.. this is not actually a TC problem.. this is wholly and solely ML networking being about equal to two tins and a wet string. -
Why is Entering Time Machine Backup SO SLOW ???
I have been using Time Machine (TM) for almost 2 years and when I enter TM - its is SLOW when I go back the timeline. I have the email window open when entering TM and it is taking minutes to fill in only 50 or so emails (I know I have 1000's).
Any suggestions to help this????
I have an external hardrive for TM connected to Time capsule.
Skip60 seconds !!!
I solved it!
What I did:
I interrupted a running incremental backup after 20 minutes by switching off Time Machine in the control panel. In the log the message was:
Stopping backupd to allow ejection of backup destination disk!
Then I rebooted the iMac from the Snow Leopard DVD and repaired the SSD and the FireWire Drive. In both cases no failures could be found.
Then I restarted the iMac from its internal SSD and waited until Time Machine started again (after one hour). Now there was something new in the log:
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Speedy HD
Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
This backup took just 12 Minutes and was much faster than the previous incremental backups which took 30..45 minutes.
Now I tried the ultimate thing: I ordered Time Machine to make a new incremental backup. See what happens:
30.06.11 21:10:23 Starting standard backup
30.06.11 21:10:23 Backing up to: /Volumes/Archiv 1/Backups.backupdb
30.06.11 21:10:32 No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.83 GB requested (including padding), 911.84 GB available
30.06.11 21:11:03 Copied 9117 files (647.1 MB) from volume Speedy HD.
30.06.11 21:11:08 Copied 9365 files (647.1 MB) from volume Speedy Medien.
30.06.11 21:11:10 No pre-backup thinning needed: 1.08 GB requested (including padding), 911.18 GB available
30.06.11 21:11:15 Copied 2811 files (1 KB) from volume Speedy HD.
30.06.11 21:11:18 Copied 3059 files (1 KB) from volume Speedy Medien.
30.06.11 21:11:22 Starting post-backup thinning
30.06.11 21:11:22 No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
30.06.11 21:11:23 Backup completed successfully.
I don't know what made the difference and I do not know how long Time Machine behaves well from now on. But I hope, that the problem is solved. -
Why does my time machine backup turn itself off all the time?
This has happened to me several times that I notice that the icon on the menu bar is grayed out for the backup... I just noticed that again for the 10th time, and that the last backup was on December 30th, but I never turned off time machine. I was wondering if this was a glich in the system? Has anyone else has this problem? Never had it before till last year...
Thanks!
MiguelMiguel.Miami wrote:
what has happened before is I look at it and see that its grayed out and when I opend Prefs panel I see that the time Machine has been switched to OFF. Which is very wierd, I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. It just happened to me today, I saw that is was grayed out again, and looked the last backup was Dec 30th....
No, I've not seen that posted here before.
A clue may be lurking in your logs. Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs. The widget may not go back to Dec 30, so you may have to use the Console app to look at your older logs, per the pink box there.
Either way, see if you can find the Dec 30 backup. If it says it completed successfully, look for the next attempt -- if so, copy and post all the messages here.
If not, keep an eye on it, and the next time it happens, the widget should show something that will help pin it down. -
Time machine crashes after Yosemite upgrade
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.2.2. on a mid-2010 MacBook, but am having problems backing up using TimeMachine.
I can access my past backups, which is good news, although I need to select one of the disks being backed up in the left column of the finder window (if I just select my username it doesn't seem to work). However, when I attempt a backup the computer crashes during the beginning of the backup process ("Processing backup"). I don't get any particular error message when Time Machine crashes, the computer just restarts and sometimes I will get an error message once the computer has finished restarting indicating that the computer restarted because of a problem.
I back up onto a non-Apple (Seagate) connected to the WiFi network drive, which has been working well for about 6 months under the previous OS.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've run the disk utility to repair disk permissions, removed the network disk as backup then re-added.And here is the Problem Details and System Configuration in case its helpful:

Does anyone know why my finder window resizes when I enter time machine?
Can anyone explain why my finder changes size when I enter time machine? I'm pretty sure this didn't happen on Snow Leopard but it does since I installed Lion. It's only a small glitch but it's rather annoying since I have positioned and resized the finder window on my desktop to the place I want it - in the centre of the screen and showing all the folders in my sidebar list. When I enter time machine the finder window becomes shorter, therefore not showing all the sidebar folders. I wouldn't mind if when I exit time machine it reverts back to the way it was but it doesn't so I have to resize over again!
Anyone know why this happenes?Take a snapshot of this issue and send it to Apple. I think it may be a small glitch.

Timemachine does not show time line when choosing 'Enter time machine'
Hi all,
I have been using TM with my Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server without any problems until today. TM still does the backups OK, but when I select 'Enter time machine' the user interface does not get deployed fully. I will show the Finder window in the middle of the screen, but the timeline does not appear. Not happens next; the underlaying desktop stays visible. When I close the window by clicking the red button I see briefly flash a part of the TM bar at the bottom of the screen and then it returns to normal desktop use.
Does anybody know why TM will not start the restore interface and how I can get it fixed?
Thanks a bunch for any replies.

Why does the aol desktop crash every time I try to use it
Why does the aol desktop crash every time I try to use it and how can I fix the problem.
I am having exactly the same problem with my iPhone 4 (running 6.0.1 (10A523)). I have rebooted several times since this started occurring but it doesn't change the behavior. It was also reporting a "storage almost full" error quite often when I still have 1GB - 3GB of free space. As a troubleshooting exercise I removed all my music so there is now 20.1GB free. The storage warning no longer appears but the same issue still persists with reminders. Help, please!

Using "Enter Time machine" with Mail does not show 'restore' tab
I recently upgraded to 10.5.6 and while in Mail, I used the menu 'enter time machine' and instead of the familiar animation, the preview pane of the mail showed the message "click restore to restore your mailbox 'x'" BUT THERE WAS NO restore tab!
I only had my original desktop background with the Mail preview panel in the center.
I took a screen shot but don't see a way to attach images like on other boards.
In all other applications, 'enter time machine' would switch me to finder and go through that great time machine animation with the 'restore''now' and 'cancel' tabs at the bottom.
Anyone know why this has happened?Hi Barry,
Sorry to confuse anyone. What I meant was that with Mail.app in front or focus, if I click on the TM icon in the dock OR if I use the menu bar TM icon and from the pull down if I choose 'enter time machine' Then all that happens is the Mail window shrinks a bit, the dock disappears, in the Mail window, in the preview panel there is a grey message saying 'click restore if you want to recover your inbox' if I highlight another folder or mailbox I created it says 'click to restore that mailbox'
But there is no "RESTORE" to click anywhere. I can see my desktop background and the icons of files on my desktop. It looks as if Mail window shrunk a bit onto my desktop with no dock. Hope that gives you an idea.
With any other application as focus, when I click on TM icon in dock or the drop down menu from menu bar, it switches to finder, then goes through that breathtaking animation of the whole desktop dropping down and the finder window trailing into infinity. -
HT3275 Why can't I enter time machine?
Why can't I enter time machine?
There are lots of possible reasons.. without more info we cannot help.
What OS is on the Mac?
Is this a new setup and has never worked? Or an old setup that has stopped working?
Is mavericks involved at all? Did you clean install or upgrade install it?
What is the target device for Time Machine?

When I enter time machine (on Time Capsule) i see the stack of screen shots and the time line. However, when I roll over the mouse pointer, the time line does not activate. The cancel button does not get me out of the app: have to alt+cmd+esc. Ideas?
I have never seen it but then I run SL which is much more reliable than Lion..

Enter Time Machine does not work
When I click "Enter Time Machine" - nothing happens. No errors or messages in the console. Nothing.
Never had a problem with restore (or backup) in Leopard, this is the first time I tried restoring a file since I've had Lion installed.
Backups always perform successfully, I am using a WD MyBook external drive hooked up via USB.
I tried deleting the time machine plist file - and that did nothing except force me to reset my preferences.
I've tried rebooting as well with no luck.
