Why does iTunes sometimes refuse to burn a 78:30 playlist?!?

Most of the time iTunes 6 will burn a 79:30 playlist to an 80-minute CD-R with no fuss. (That's a real 79:30 or 79:40 or even 79:55, not the list of times as iTunes displays them to the whole second. I monitor the time precisely using the Info/Options panel for each track.)
But once in a while, iTunes decides a playlist is too long even when it's not, like when it is really 78:30. This happens erratically. But when it does continue to give me this message, no amount of chopping time off each track seems to matter. (I use Peak to edit out "dead air" at the end. Doing this to 20 tracks can cut over a minute from the total time of a playlist.) It will only burn to one CD if I remove a whole track.
I just tested one case where it burned 75:50 but not the last track, which was another 2:43. I rebuilt the playlist one track at a time with a new name, but no cigar. I really want this particular 78:30 playlist on one CD. Can anyone help with this?

I would like at once to thank you for making this point again and also to say that it is just not relevant to the problem I'm having. However much space TAO takes up, at the end of the day it's accountable in the total time on the CD. I am not having a problem with iTunes failing to accept a playlist near the limit of time. When the playlist plus TAO space plus anything else adds up to under 80 minutes, iTunes will burn it.
My problem comes when I begin with a playlist of specific tracks that total a few seconds more than 80 minutes. Not incidentally, this is the result of iTunes adding from two to five seconds to each track as it imports the track using Apple Lossless Compression. As a result, a playlist that was actually shorter than 80 minutes becomes longer than 80 minutes.
Then, WITHOUT CHANGING THE TITLES, I remove 60 seconds from the total playlist time BY EDITING THOSE TITLES to make them shorter. For example, "Only the Lonely.mp4" is changed from 2:28.93 to 2:23.87.
I do this by using Peak to remove "dead air" from the end of the track. I then save the new file and substitute it for the old one in the iTunes library. I look before and after at the iTunes file info to confirm I have actually shortened the track by 5.06 seconds as far as iTunes is concerned. In my playlist the time now reads 2:23 instead of 2:28. I do this to other tracks, 10 or more times, to reduce the actual running time of the playlist by a full minute or more. The playlist is now UNDER 79 MINUTES.
But iTunes will not burn this exact playlist on one CD. IF, on the other hand, I simply change one track from my playlist to another track (with a new name) and a shorter playing time, iTunes will burn it just fine. What iTunes will not let me do is burn the exact playlist I started with, from which I have subtracted a full minute's time. I need a fix for this specific situation.

  • When I download a long album from ITunes containing like 20-30 tracks, why does ITunes sometimes segregate one track and create a separate album out of it. I can merge the track into the other tracks on a playlist, but I can not merge the 2 albums.

When I download an opera album with lets day 40 songs (tracks). Why does iTunes create one album of tracks lets say 1 through 22, skip 23 and then 24 through 40. Then a separate album with track 23 is created. I can merge them together in a playlist but not as a single album. I go into the info under the file menu for each and make sure the information is the same but they still will not merge.

I'm not sure why this happens, but I found a workaround. Below the album title it will list the artist(s). The issue seems to happen when there are multiple artists. For example, an Album titled "Over the Sea to Skye" has The Chieftains and James Galway as artists. Some tracks (for whatever reason) will list only one of these and result in the playlist showing what appears to be multiple albums. You can click on the artists and it will highlight. Paste in what is appearing on the other "albums" and it will then show as one:
Hope that is somewhat clear enough to help. Doesn't fix whatever the issue is but it is a workaround. For me this is only happening with CD's that I have imported.

  • Why does iTunes tell me the burner is in use?

When trying to burn music discs from iTunes, I'm now getting a message that "the burner is already being used by another application." It's really strange because that's not the case and iTunes burned CDs just fine for years until this past week.
I get the message every time I burn, whether I'm using the internal drive or an external one. I have two external DVD burner drives as well as the internal, and they all produce the same message. Usually, if I try many times by putting the same CD back in and trying again, eventually it will work. But it shouldn't be giving that message at all, so I'd like to get to the bottom of the problem.
I'm using iTunes 11.1.4 on OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 on a Mac Pro. I've never before had a problem burning CDs from iTunes.
I have Toast installed, but not running at the time this happens. I checked to see if a Roxio background helper app was perhaps running that I didn't know about, but nothing is listed in the console nor in my Login Items list. There are no apps running that might have anything to do with burning discs, so I'm totally puzzled.
That isn't the only problem, either. When I'm finally successful in getting iTunes to actually succeed, when it burns a multi-part disc, it always rejects the second CD, claiming that I need to insert a blank disc, even though the one I'm putting in is indeed blank. The only workaround is to take the playlist and eliminate all the tracks that were already burned, then creating a new disc from the remaining tracks. Then, of course, I go through the whole "the burner is already in use" message until after several attempts to insert the disc and have it spit out again it finally works.
The message comes up whether I put the disc in before clicking the "Burn Playlist to Disc" menu item, or if I wait until it tells me to insert a blank disc. But when it successfully proceeds to the "Checking media" step, it's usually when the disc is inserted before starting the burn.
I have to suspect that some kind of helper app is the culprit but for the life of me I can't figure out which one. I've seen other reports of this same message and none of those people are likely to have some of the same specialized apps that I run like Drobo or ScanSnap Manager or ChronoSync. I'm kind of willing to try a process of elimination but the prospect of continually removing an app at a time and rebooting is not something I look forward to. Could take up the better part of a day, costing me hundreds of dollars in lost time, so if anyone has an inkling of where to start I would really appreciate it.

I hadn't checked this, so I disconnected the external drives and tried again. Same thing.
FWIW, I had already tried deleting the itunes preference files and that made no difference.

  • Why does itunes say the entry point is not found

why does itunes say it didn't install correctly and to reinstall?

Greg, did the "Patchburn" really work for you?
I had the same problem today. I have a smart playlist made up of: Kind>is>Protected AAC audio file. This smart play list allows me to keep track of music I've downloaded from the iTMS after inadvertently deleting the Purchased Music default playlist. Yes, I know a new “Purchased Music” playlist is created when you buy music again, but it doesn’t contain any of the songs you’ve already downloaded.
When I went to burn this playlist (several hundred songs) to multiple audio CD format - I go the same result you got.
"After asking to burn a play list it asks to insert CD, checks the media, checks the play list and then stops with the apple icon reappearing and NO error message."
Apple tech support couldn’t help me - I found that out the hard way - after 1.5 hours on the phone. No, I haven't exceeded the 7 time burn limit either.
I tried selecting all the songs in the smart playlist and creating a new [regular] playlist and tried to burn from that, but got the same result.
Finally, I tried typing "Protected AAC audio file" from my main library in the search window, selected all the songs that resulted, created a new [regular] playlist from that selection and the burn was successful.
It was a real pain and took almost 3 hours to figure out, but it worked. I'm going to try the "Patchburn" download talked about earlier, but don't know if that's the real problem.
Yes, I have upgraded my SuperDrive, but iTunes recognizes it - Preferences>Advanced>Burning - if your drive shows up here then that's not the problem. Besides, I had the same problem when trying to burn to the original SuperDrive too.
I think the problem may be deeper inside iTunes itself. Duh! Maybe something with Apple tightening their DRM scheme which may make us unwitting beta testers to see if they tightened the noose too tight or not. Just a guess.
    Any thoughts, anyone?

  • Why does iTunes/iPhone 4S insist it can't find a song on my PC or my phone when it is on both? This is resulting in me being unable to use the ringtones I created from these songs, but I can still play the songs.

OK, so I'm clearly a newb. I thought if I asked a question, it would post, and now I'm being told to post a comment, so I'm asking the same question again. Sorry I sound like an idiot. I'm new to this apple/mac stuff.
Why does iTunes/iPhone 4S insist it can't find a song on my PC or my phone when it is on both? This is resulting in me being unable to use the ringtones I created from these songs, but I can still play the songs.

If you have added the ringtone file correctly to iTunes, it will appear under iTunes 'Tones' library.
If you don't find Tones library in iTunes, go to iTunes menu EDIT/PRFERENCES under GENERAL tab, check the Tones Box under Library source to display Tones library in iTunes.
iTunes accepts only m4r file as ringtone and has to be less than 40secs.

  • Why does Itunes sync my purchase transfers to the wrong hard drive?

I'm running windows 7 with a 64gb SSD boot drive and 1tb data drive. My boot drive is almost completely full. I installed itunes on my data drive and set the preferences to sync media to the data drive as well. I plug in my old ipod to tranfer purchases before an update. The tranfer never finished because it synced all of the data to my boot drive and now my boot drive is completely full and the data is nowhere to be found. I recently had the same problem with it syncing an iphone backup to the same drive, but I found a work around for that. Why does Itunes instist on loading stuff on the boot drive? How can I redirect it? This is simple preferences that should be available to change, but simply aren't.

  • Why does iTunes think my iPad is a new one?

When I connect my otherwise happy iPad to iTunes, iTunes says "This computer has previously been synced with an iPad or another iOS device" and wants me either to "set up as new iPad" or "restore from the backup of <my iPad name>". Of course it's just the same iPad I've connected, so why does iTunes not recognise it as such?
This happened before, and I know if I select "Restore from the backup of <my iPad name>", it deletes and restores all the apps and media content, but in the process I lose all data e.g. progress in games, data and configurations entered into apps etc.
This is iTunes 10.2.2.12 on Win 7 64-bit, iPad 16GB with iOS 4.3.1.
Any suggestions what I can do? Even if I have to restore from backup, is there a way I can prevent this happening again?

I'm having same problem! I tried the trick of unplugging right after the sync begins and the only thing my iPad does is give me a sync failure message and restarts itself. I plug ipad back in and get same message??? I've emailed iTunes support and they have not been able to help. I tried all the standard stuff like de-authorizing/athorizing, checked that my iPad iOS is the latest version (which it is), latest version of iTunes installed (even uninstalled/reinstalled iTunes). No matter what I try cannot get around this message.  I too have tons of app settings/configurations that get lost if I go thru the restore option.  I actually tried the restore option out of frustration, lost all of my configurations AND still get the same message - seems like my iPad is caught up in a loop no matter what I try.  To make matters worse, my iTunes library got lost as all my songs are showing up with an '!' next to each song (meaning it cannot locate the file).  I checked and they are truely missing so when I go to my purchased music all of my purchases show up (all 4000+ of them) however are all listed as 'Downloaded' in the right margin???  My true objective here is to be able to transfer my purchases on my iPad to my iTunes as my iPad is complete as far as all apps/recent purchases.  HELP !!! Thanks

Why has it taken 20 days and iTunes still hasn'tfixed my account?
Why have I ended up with two iTunes account instead of just one?
Why are the people running the system so thick that the two accounts created god knows why both belong to the same person?
Why is the customer serviceso indifferent and off balance so much that it is barely service at all?
Why does iTunes not fix their system so that they deal with issues once, once only and move to the next customer thereby reducing everyones waiting time.

  • ITunes says I have authorized five computers so I can no longer play music I have purchased. I have not replaced my computer once. Why does iTunes say this?

iTunes says I have authorized five computers so I can no longer play music I have purchased. I have not replaced my computer once. Why does iTunes say this?

    Hey Christownsend,
Thanks for the question. To troubleshoot this issue, you may want to try deauthorizing all computers:
iTunes Store: About authorization and deauthorization
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1420
To deauthorize all computers associated with your Apple ID
If you need to authorize your new computer and are unable due to already having five authorized computers, you can deauthorize all computers by doing the following:
    1. Click iTunes Store on the left side of iTunes.
    2. If you're not signed in to the store, click the Account button, then enter your account name and password.
    3. Click the Account button again (your Apple ID appears on the button), enter your password, and then click View Account.
    4. In the Account Information window, click Deauthorize All.
Note: You may only use this feature once per year. The Deauthorize All button will not appear if you have fewer than two authorized computers. If you need assistance on using this feature, please contact iTunes Store support via email (http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/).
    Thanks,

Why does itunes in France have a complete lack of english language content... prefering to release dubbed programmes and not the original english language content?
It would be just as easy to release both a dubbed version and then a subtitled version.
I am a native english speaker but live in France. My father has just moved over to live with me in France and speaks very little French.
The price for a television series is very often more than a dvd box set but does not offer language options.
My French is passable but I would still prefer to hear the programme in English.
Using itunes uk is not an option as my cards are french or english with a french postal address.
The content has been adapted for the french site all i want is to access the original.
The series i have been trying to buy is HBOs 'boardwalk empire'.
The stupid thing is to please my father i would buy up most the HBO, BBC and Channel 4 content a cost of a couple of thousand euros.

France has come a very long way with regard to other languages.  When I lived in France, mid-880s, there was an entire Ministry devoted to the purity of the French language...that was the time the PC came out.  A TV news person was cashiered for using the term 'computer' on-air instead of the French created word 'ordinateur'.  They took the language extremely seriously at that time.  At least today there is recognition and even use of English by the masses
