Why does my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 crash on startup?

Hi, folks--
My 2006 Mac Pro is regularly crashing on startup with a kernel panic. It will chime on startup and usually show me the Apple startup screen with the spinning wheel-- but after that, I get the multi-language "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again" message. Sometimes it doesn't even get there-- the spinning wheel just freezes, and stays frozen. Every once in a while, the Mac will start up, but the mouse will be so unresponsive that it takes me several minutes to mouse over to Restart so I can try again. (I've checked the mouse on another computer and it works fine.)
Additional info:
• I have one SSD startup disk with Lion, and two HDD startup disks with Snow Leopard. Starting up with any of these three disks results in the problems described above. This suggests to me that it's a hardware problem, rather than a problem with a specific startup disk.
• I tried starting up from my Snow Leopard Install disk. It was able to start up successfully. All the data on my hard drives seemed to be intact, including Lion Install, so I tried re-installing Lion on my SSD. It showed the blue progress bar for a minute. Then it said it would restart my computer in 30 seconds-- at which point, I once again got the multi-language "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button ETC" crash. If even the install disk is crashing, this again suggests a hardware problem.
• I set the Mac Pro to target mode, and used it as a startup disk for my wife's Macbook. It functioned just fine and there were no crashes. Again, confirmation that it is a hardware problem with my Mac Pro.
• I have zapped the PRAM. I have also run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, and verified the disk. This did not fix the issue. (Not surprising if it is a hardware problem.)
• HOWEVER:  I put in the install disk that came with the computer originally and was able to complete the Hardware Test. I chose the most thorough option. It did not find any problems.
• This started happening three days ago. I'm not aware of any recent changes to the system that could have caused this. The most recent change I made was installing a Radeon HD 5770  graphics card and an SSD drive, more than a month ago. There was no sign of trouble after I installed either of them (except for some problems putting the Mac Pro to sleep, which is apparently a known issue with the Radeon 5770 in this model Mac Pro).
• Weirdly, after I fiddle with the Mac Pro for an hour or so (run diagnostics, reboot it repeatedly, etc) it seems to start working. If there is indeed a hardware problem, then perhaps something works better when it's warmed up.
Is there anything you'd suggest I try? Or am I stuck lugging it to the Genius Bar? I don't have a car, so this is a bit of a pain…
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Thanks, The Hatter. I'm working through all the links you've provided and see if I can narrow down the problem.
And, Grant, thanks as well-- I really appreciate the specific information. You've enabled me to track down the panic log -- but they are indeed baffling. I'm pasting one below, in case somebody wiser than I can interpret it for me.

  • Why does my intel Mac Pro boot with multiple 'good' boot tones?

My 8-core Xeon Mac Pro, running Snow Leopard, has an 'odd' behavior.  Every time it boots, I hear the initial successful boot tone, followed by a delayed series of 4 quieter, abbreviated but similar boot tones.  The machine boots normally and operates normally that I can tell.

The following apple doc refers to multiple boot beeps
Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2
But what is confusing is your description about when the beeps occur, i.e, after the normal boot chime.  So that doc may be unrelated.
Try disconnecting all your periphials and see if the problem continues.
    Try smc reset too.
See if it occurs if you boot in safe mode.

  • Why does my Dreamweaver 8 on Windows 7 crash on startup?

I have deleted the .dat file and renamed the Configuration folder, but to no avail.

Jon, Thank you for responding. I don't know what CS4, CS5, CS5.5 or CS6 are, however, I have managed to solve the problem by stopping the program from searching when it creates a new Configuration folder. This one extra step fixed the issue. There was no need to restore preferences.

  • 2006 mac pro 2.66 in need of an airport card!

Hi Does anyone know which airport card or cards, as well as bluetooth, will work in an 2006 mac pro? I have read that MA688Z/B is the proper card. I have tracked down a MA688Z/A: http://www.macproonline.com/Mac-Pro-Tower/Mac-Pro-Tower-Parts/Mac-Pro-Tower-667M hz/Apple-AirPort-Extreme-p5636018.html

Can anyone verify which airport card to use for a 2006 mac pro model?

    Hi cmotta12,

One important thing to note is that the official Apple Airport Card Wireless Upgrade Kits come complete with the two micro screws which are needed to install the card.
These screws are not readily available, so ensure that they are included when you buy your Upgrade Kit.

  • Is there a way to install boot camp on a 2006 Mac Pro running Lion?

Lion comes with Boot Camp 4, which supports Windows 7+. The 2006 Mac Pro however only supports Windows Vista, which requires Boot Camp 3.
    I can't find a download link for Boot Camp 3, only 4 and 5.
    Does anyone have an idea?

It is on your original dvd that came with your computer. See the Boot Camp System Requirements located here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
Look for your computer to determine what support software version is supported and where it is located.

  • 2006 Mac Pro (OSX 10.7.5) and USB 3 speeds

I'm considering the purchase of a HighPoint RocketU 1144CM USB 3.0 PCIe card and would like to know if there's anything in the architecture of my 2006 Mac Pro [Build 1,1] which might limit throughput speeds to USB2 standards. The manufacturer's [HighPoint] website claims compatibility with OSX 10.7.5 (my current operating system) but does not make any mention of the year in which the computer was built. Will I be able to obtain USB 3.0 speeds or would I just be wasting my money? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There have been more limitations and choices in support for even the 2008 and earlier.
Chipsets change, some use drivers and drivers that support 32-bit kernel and a smaller number of users, have hampered choice.
I was using two Sonnet SATA II controllers, the E2P and the E4P. Those worked and of course speed was fine, as was ejecting, sleep and other features and behavior.  The Allegro has probably changed over the years and there are cheaper alternatives.
www.xlr8yourmac.com does have readers reports in a database and write-ups.
It has also been discussed here many many times, and on MacRumors forum for the Mac Pro.
    What is the state of USB 3.0 on Mac Pro?  (  1 2 3 4 5 6 ... Last Page)
Highpoint can be iffy in support. As to USB2 speeds, only if the device(s) are a factor, and Allegro does not support hubs or non-storage devices (phone, tablet, card readers etc)

  • 2006 Mac Pro corrupting the disk - possible logic board problem?

    Hi there.
I bought a faulty MP (2006) that wouldn't install an OSX. It would install to a point and then fail or install fully then not boot. Apparently this happened shortly after a 10.5.8 update failed mid way. The seller told me how it seemed to corrupt hard disks placed into it. How he diagnosed this I don't know.
I bought it and did a fresh 10.6 install on a formatted disk in my other 2006 mac pro. Then swapped the disk into the faulty mac pro. Everything seemed fine. Booted up and seemed to work fine.
Upon trying to install itunes 9 I had all sorts of issues (which I've read about). Upon doing a disk check in disk utility it seems the disk has loads of errors, imcomplete nodes/trees etc. Repairing the disk isn't working (in the OS as well as booting from the DVD).
Has anyone encountered anything like this? It seems the disk is getting corrupted by something or other. Hardware tests check out fine.
Could this be a problem on the Logic board?
    Thanks

One thing I did notice that I thought was odd was on the grey boot screen a small empty progress bar appears for a second or two and then vanishes. Sure this is the same progress bar that appears on an efi update etc.... not sure it's connected

  • Windows 7 using bootcamp on mid 2006 Mac Pro.

I just got the a copy of Duke Nukem: Forever, and my heart sank when I saw that it would only run on a windows machine. So using bootcamp, I created a partition of 100GB, and I went to install a genuine copy of Windows 7 on my mid 2006 Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.7 with everything fully updated. However when I went to install windows, it continally gives me an error. I followed the install guidelines on the bootcamp instillation guide, clicked "format" in the windows installer, and nothing happens. It just kicks out an error code and tells me that it cannot install to this location. I can't be the only one out there with this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Here are the specs of my machine:
    Mac Pro mid 2006
Two Dual Core 2.66 Intel Xenon processors
    8GB RAM
over 1 TB of free space
    Mac OSX 10.6.7
Windows 7 Home Premium (Genuine Copy)
error message displayed during windows instillation:  "0x80300024"
    Thanks for anyones assistance!

There are more than enough helpful links from Bing on the error message.
Issue with your Mac Pro is you need 64-bit to address more than 1.9GB / Windows 7 Pro to support dual processor.
The lack of EFI64 does make it impossible to install as is. Most common, people can't get beyond an error on startup "Select 1 or 2"
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2372797?threadID=2372797&tstart=0
Also, you need to remove all drives other than the one you will install Windows to.

  • Questions about ati radeon 2600 on an 2006 mac pro

I know the debate has been going around for awhile about these cards, Apple claims that they are not supported but my card runs as long as you have leopard installed. So far the card has performed great, all my games and graphics programs run beautiful with it but I do have two problems. One is I can only have my display set at 1400 x 1050 any lower setting results in severe blurring on the screen. The other problem is that the text on my screen is some what pixelated and blurry.
I was wondering if there is a fix for this problem or is it just the price I have to pay for running it on a 2006 mac pro.

If it is a problem, and you can afford another upgrade, the Radeon 3870 might be your best choice.

The video card currently in my early 2006 Mac Pro (2.6 GHz, dual-core) isn't fast enough for many of the recent games and I'd like to upgrade. I play games both on OSX Snow Leopard and Windows XP via Boot Camp. Is there a list of currently compatible cards available somewhere?

No, not really.... but a couple of tips...
    1) when you're pulling the old card out, remember there is a black plastic retainer clip at the inner (front of computer) end. I didn't notice that, and now it's broken.
    2) Get the 5770 from Apple, not a big box store.... those don't come with the power cable you need and may not work.
    3) Plug the power cable into the mother board (?) first. It's fiddly, especially if you have big hands.... then plug it into the card, then slot it into the computer.
There are demos on youtube, but they all seem to miss out the fiddly bits.....!

  • Optical Audio not working on 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 after 10.6.7 update

    Hi all,
I have no digital audio output on my 2006 Mac Pro after I updated to 10.6.7. System Preferences recognizes the output but their is nothing coming out. The digital audio port goes from steady red at startup to dark, indicating that it is not receiving anything. I have switched to another digital audio cable with no effect whatsoever.
I reset the SMC with no effect. I have read online that other users are having this issue as well. I appreciate any input or insight into the issue.
    Thanks!

Thanks for the reply a brody.
It has been 3 months and the issue still persists and has not gone away.  I agree with pantufl that my Mac has become buggier since 10.6.7.  The doc I read and reread didn't do anything except change the frequency rate.  There is still no sound.
The update to 10.6.8 didn't resolve anything except prepping it for 10.7
This is extremely frustrating especially since I recently upgraded to a 55" Samsung LED LCD monitor and Onkyo HT S7300 system.  I also recently upgraded to EyeTV HD and use my Mac as my HTPC.
I will try the feedback post to see what Apple has planned, if anything.

  • 2006 Mac Pro Cold Boot Failure

    Hi all,
I have problems with 2006 Mac Pro. It fails cold boot at 100%, first thing in the morning only. So I'm seeking expert advice.
    The spec is,
    Xeon 5355 2.66GHz x2 (Octo cores)
    ATI Radeon 5770(Apple Genuine)
    8GB Memory(4x1GB kingston, 4x1GB OWC)
    500GBx2 1TBx2 HDDs
I disassembled and cleaned PSU and Fans, reapplying thermal pastes on CPUs and North Bridge a month ago.
Then I booted, system froze at desktop, so I shut it down, reset PRAM & SMC. it booted normally but the upper riser card wasn't detected at all. I cleaned the slot contact and reseated DIMM modules. It was detected after that.
Everything worked fine for a few days but then I got random kernel panics, reseated RAM, reinstalled Snow Leopard but still got random kernel panics. Then ran AHT for a couple of hours and got an error code 4MEM/6....
I contacted OWC and they sent me a new set of memory modules. While waiting for the replacement, no kernel panics at all but DVD drive died as well as IDE cable, so I replaced both.
I got the replacement RAM but past a week, MP fails cold boot every morning. Below is what's happening...
    (1) With Kingston Memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM A1). Or sometimes, Power-LED is blinking.
    (2) With OWC memory, boots normally, then kernel panic within a few minutes.
    (3) With OWC memory, CPU B error LED is lit, I press SYS_RST, one of DIMM LED is then lit (always DIMM B1)
*(1) with new and old riser cards
*(3) after replaced 2 riser cards
Replacing riser cards didn't help. After these happen, I shut down by pressing power button for seconds and it boots normally without a hitch. Never get kernel panics nor system freeze. It means when it warms up, MP just works just like it should.
    Replaced so far,
    -- IDE cable (Apple Genuine)
    -- DVD drive (Optiarc AD-7200A)
    -- 4GB (1GBx4) OWC memory
    -- RTC battery CR2032
    -- 2 riser cards
Is the logic board dead or PSU or memory modules are still bad?
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have a Mac Pro dual 2.8 ghz quad core, circa 2008. Recently, I have been required to depress the power button to end a failed cold boot, then press again to boot, usually with success.
Every hard restart freeze, and can guarantee you end up with
corrupt caches, corrupt file system, corrupt directory.
Safe Boot is not effective in such cases, fsck from single user mode has a better chance.
Booting from another hard drive, install your bought copy of Alsoft Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory (it has deep scavenge files also).
The longer you continue to do just Safe Boot and continue using it, the more trouble and less likelihood of being able to repair the drive.
SMART is not smart enough, it tells you about the past, not what could likely happen, or if you have had bad sectors and I/O errors.
Have bootable backup clones and a drive that is a clean Apple OS and drivers that isn't used except for repairs and maintenance. Don't rely on just Apple Disk Repair.
