Why does my CPU speed read "O" in System Profiler?

My System Profiler reads "O" for CPU speed, even though I have a 1.8GHz Giga Designs upgrade.
The computer runs fine, it just really bothers me...
Though I have heard of people having trouble running certain software when this problem occurs. By the way, I have reset the PRAM, and inserted a new battery as well, problem persists.

Thanks! I love this discussion group... 8-)
Err...what is MDD? Guess I don't really need to know, just need to upgrade my Mac. Please don't feel a need to explain if it's complicated.
Japaman, notice you are in Japan. So am I, Nagano-ken (now 8 years). Also noticed you registered here on my birthday, April 16th. Coincidence? I think not...
Just kidding. Anyway, always good to know another English-speaking Mac user in Japan. Please feel free to email me at [email protected]
Cheers!

• Why does RAM improve speed of mac?

Why does improving the RAM increase the speed of opening skype, about this mac, system preferences and activity monitor? It seems it only opens these sort of Applications quicker, not other applications which involve alot of data-reading. I know what RAM is and what it does, but dont see why it makes these quicker? Im suprised how much of a difference 8GB is from 2GB.
Thanks, Tom

Basically because it is a lot faster than the alternative: using vacant hard drive space as temporary 'virtual memory'.

• Why does my animation speed up?

Why does my Edge animation, placed in a Muse built website, speed up as I scroll down the page when previewed in my browser (Safari)?

Hi Raven,
I just noticed that it's putting the wrong file up. I've deleted and re-embedded it into the page to no avail. For instance, the words "About" and the main text are aligned together on the left, the name comes in much slower, etc. I tried Safari and Chrome on my Mac over here and it's doing the same thing. Also, the woman fades in from black and white to color. Does any of that show on your end?
Thanks!!!

• Why does Mail not support read receipts?

I find it hard to believe that there is a single email application that doesn't support read receipts. For me it is a fairly basic feature I would expect any decent Mail application to have.
I am currently in the process of writing an email to a company and I want to make sure they get it - a read receipt is how I want to verify that they've had it. Why does Mail not support this?
If I am going to have to accept that Mail is not the first class application Apple keeps parading around - is there an alternative that offers this and other features I would expect to find in Microsoft Outlook (minus the calendar etc...)?

Outlook uses a Microsoft-proprietary system for "read receipts", so there may be no way Apple could implement it, or there may be licensing fees involved, or Apple may just not feel that it's worth spending the money to implement. Outlook which is designed to work primarily with an Exchange server, so it's in Microsoft's interest to support Exchange features (note that even Microsoft in their own Mac app do not support all the features theydo on Windows).
You can express your interest in this feature to Apple via their feedback pages, if you wish:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
but support for return receipts in any system other than Exchange is very unlikely, since as Matt said it is not part of the Internet email specification and hence not widely supported at all.

• Why does Windows 7 not show up in System Preference's "Startup Disk"

Why does Windows 7, installed via Boot Camp, show up when you hold down the option key when booting but the drive does not show up in System Preferences under the Startup Disk icon.
As an aside Windows 7 runs perfectly on my MacBook.
- Mike

Now I found I'm not alone. My situation is similar but not exactly the same.
I recently switched from the white MacBook to latest mac mini, tried installing XP Pro not successful for some reasons then tried Win7 (build 7000). On my old macbook this worked perfectly.
Got win7 updated and picked win7 as startup disk in windows, used that for few days without going back to leopard. On just one occasion I booted with 'alt' key pressed (using a PC keyboard) I have choices of drives so I thought everything was fine. As soon as I booted into leopard I found no win7 partition in system>preference>startup disk, OMG I couldn't boot back to win7 since then. From that point onwards the 'alt' key didn't work for me. Every time only leopard can be booted.
What can I do now?
Why it was OK in macbook but didn't work on mini? Is it worth investing on a mac external keyboard just to get the 'option' key?

• Why does my 2600xt GPU (256MB) only 128 in profiler?

I was reading threads on upgraded graphics and started wondering what VRAM my card has and went into system profiler, it is the 2600 card which is supposed to have 256, but it only shows 128 mb vram. Could this be due to running dual displays?

Many Users have already had these cards fail and have updated them to more modern solutions such as these:
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

• CPU not showing up in System Profiler

Hi,
I have a 4 year old Dual 2.5 GHz G5 which I think has had a CPU failure (B CPU). The system profiler states that I only have one, not two CPU's.
Is it a case of using a repair CD to reset the lost CPU or is it dead?
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards
Dean

Hi Dean,
Ouch... Well I've gathered up a few alternative solutions, though you might want to give an Apple Authorized Repairer a call for an estimate: http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Here are some links to wade through if you'd like to get a replacement. The first is way over priced, that store always is, but it does show the part is out there:
http://www.welovemacs.com/appomacg5du255.html
I had a good experience with this place once awhile back:
http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Power-Mac-G5-Processor-c-2532381434.html
And this link provides even more links:

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

• Why do multiple versions of programs show in System Profiler?

In System Profiler many programs show as having multiple versions. e.g., Preview has 5.0.2 and 4.1; ITunes shows 10.0.1, 8.0.2, 7.7.1; Mail shows 4.3, 3.5, and 3.3. It's that way for NUMEROUS programs and utilities - these are just a few examples.
Only one version of the program shows in Finder. However, when I do Right Click/"Open With" on a PDF both versions of Preview are listed as options to access the file. Likewise if I Right Click/"Open With" on an MP3 file it shows all 3 versions of ITunes as options.
Are these multiple versions actually on my machine? Why doesn't the OS/software update process have clean uninstalls? Windows has "Uninstall Program" in Control Panel. That sure would be helpful on a Mac. How can I safely get rid of the old versions of the software?

The Previous Systems folder can be deleted safely. It is just there in case you find there are some files you need to bring into your current system after an upgrade. I think the advice circa 10.2 is still viable. On the following page you can find similar advice:

Sure you can read and write at the same time. But normally you would be reading from one place and writing to another place.
I rather regret avoiding the OP's earlier post asking how to combine two classes. I looked at the two classes posted and realized the best thing to do was actually to break them into more classes. But I also realized it was going to be a big job explaining why and how, and I just don't have the patience for that sort of thing.
So now we have a Big Ball Of Tar™ and I feel partly responsible.

• Why does my CPU overheat playing online flash videos?

Last year my CPU would melt playing youtube videos in firefox browser. My research found that it was
a compatibility problem between firefox and adobe. So I switched to chrome and problem fixed.
Now the last couple months (this year) its doing it again but not on youtube but rather on facebook or
any other site that uses flash embedded videos. It screams to 100c in minutes.
I have updated drivers, cleaned my cpu etc etc. Now in searching the forums here it seems
Im not the only one experiencing this and all the questions are marked answered yet I have not
found an answer that works ie disable hardware acceleration.
I am running AMD dual core with GeForce 2gig vid card.
Any thoughts/solutions?

How much RAM do you have installed? What model Mac do you have?

• [SOLVED]Why does .bash_profile seem tobe read in non-login shells too?

~/.bash_profile:
. $HOME/.bashrc
~/.bashrc:
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/code/shell
(irrelevant lines left out)
(I have no ~/.profile, ~/.bash_login or * ~/.bash_logout. I have also never edited /etc/profile or /etc/bash.bashrc.)
I've read that in a login shell (e.g. TTY1) only the former is read, which in my case sources the latter. Running "export -p" in TTY1 gives a result consistent with this:
declare -x PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/bin/core_perl:/home/lazar/code/shell" (/home/lazar/code/shell is only listed once)
I've also read that in a non-login shell (e.g. xterm) only the latter is read. However, when I run "export -p" in xterm or urxvt I get an unexpected result:
declare -x PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/bin/core_perl:/home/lazar/code/shell:/home/lazar/code/shell" (/home/lazar/code/shell is listed twice!)
This implies that ~.bashrc is read twice, perhaps because .bash_profile is read in non-login shells too, even though it shouldn't be, should it? It doesn't seem to matter really, but I can't help but wonder why...
[EDIT]
I've found the answer. Exports from .bash_profile are done at boot time and *remain* active while X is active. Opening a non-login shell will cause .bashrc to export as well. Hence the duplication. My solution:
~/.bash_profile:
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/code/shell
. $HOME/.bashrc
~/.bashrc:
(lines other than export commands)

As I wondered, I think it's a problem with passwd. I don't have a dbus entry and must have missed it when I was copying things around between my version and the .pacnew. Downloading an install disc now since I can't seem to change it from the recovery console due to mounting root read-only.
I'd love to know of a way to boot that avoids starting dbus and other things that might break while still having read/write access to root. Will mark solved once I update /etc/passwd and reboot.
