  • Lock up, fans go into high speed on dual g5

I am new on this forum so bear with me. I have a question for anyone here who can answer it.
I recently purchased a new powermac g5 dualcore 2.3mhz running 10.4.6. A few nights past I was on the internet and for some reason the machine locked up, this happened when I was answering a question someone on e-bay has sent me regarding an auction. I hit the command and escape keys and the machine's fans went into a high mode. I was concerned thinking it might be due to overheating so I had to cut power to the machine. I rebooted after a while and ran the disc utility. The disc checked out and everything appears to be normal.
Does anyone here have any idea what occured? Is it a cause for concern? I use a Apple USB dial up modem by the way. I realize it is positively neolithic but I intend to eventually go with DSL just haven't gotten it done yet. Thanks

    Hi Studio,
    Welcome to discussions.
Alfredo's experience aside, one anomalous event wouldn't cause me to worry about my logic board. In this case, where what you were doing was simple enough to be unlikely to have directly caused a problem, I don't think I'd worry at all. If the event happens a second or third time, I would go looking for it.
Fans: Normal behavior in any case where the temperature sensors' software isn't running. The only safe thing to do if the temp can't be monitored is to run the fans at full speed. The fan noise was a byproduct of the crash, not a sign that the powermac was too hot.
Good luck; let us know if you have a repeat problem...

  • Mac Pro Fans Kick into high

I have a Mac Pro with 2 extra HD'S in it. I leave the machine running all the time. After leaving the machine on (without restarting) for like 2 months, I have the fans Kick into high even though CPU load is low. They are very loud and they wont turn off. The only way I have gotten them to turn off is by turning off the computer. Has anyone else had a similar issue?
    Ian

Turn off? hard or soft? ie, does it do a normal shutdown? if not the directory could be damaged.
Apple Hardware Test would be step #1.
Dust build-up or high ambient temperatures or not getting enough ventilation. You could use smcFanControl shareware app to force fans to higher rpm than 500-600 minimum rpm.
    SMC Reset would be another.

  • Fan running at high speed (iMac 2011)

I'm using an iMac mid-2011 model, 21.5". For the past few weeks, I'm facing an issue where the fan runs at high speed (>3900 rpm). This generally happens when I use the mac for more than an hour with simple tasks like browsing, checking mails, working on word / powerpoint, etc. If I play a game or watch a video, it happens faster in 15 - 30 mins.
I've tried SMS reset several times but it did not help.
I also ran the apple hardware test (extended testing) and got the following error:
    4SNS / 1 / 40000000 : TS2p - 121.250
Could anyone help me understand what this error means?
    Thanks.

There is a sensor error. That is most likely why you are experiencing the problem. Take it in for service.

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • Resolution changed on remote display.  Fan runs at HIGH speed.

Today, for no reason, resolution changed on remote display.  Option needed no longer shown.  Tried SMC and PRAM resets.  Now resolution on the MAC AIR is messed up (not full screen) and the fan runs at HIGH speed.  This is a sudden change.  Have been using the MAC Air in this exact configuration for 2 years.  Tried restart/reset of monitor.  Nothing.  Did resets on MAC and screen changed there.  Also the fan runs at high speed.

    Hi donaldfromsaint charles,
It seems you are experiencing an issue with displays and their resolutions. The following article provides troubleshooting guidance which may help you find a solution:

First uninstall your antivirus. Use only a vendor-provided uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. Never remove files by hand. Never use an "app zapper".
If that doesn't fix it, take it back to Apple for service.

  • Macbook Pro Fans Running At High Speed

My MBP 17" CoreDuo 2.16ghz came back from having the Logic Board replaced at the weekend. All is well except that now the fans run at high speed all the time.
I have installed SMCFanControl, and the current readings are 45 / 113 degrees and the fans are running at 5500 rpm. I took the machine back to the Apple store but when I was there the fans didn't go above 3000rpm (typical huh?). It's nice that the case is now a lot cooler than it used to be but the fans seem very loud to me.
The question is, is this normal? I am not running anything very heavy duty at the moment. Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Matt

I tend to agree with Ned on SMC fan control (that it arguably causes more problems than it solves).
I had a similar problem with mine recently having the fans run constantly and at full speed. My temperatures never approached yours, but it would fail to go to sleep etc.
I would start with the advice Ned gave you. This is the same path Apple Care led me down in trying to resolve the issue.
Ultimately though I had to do an archival install of the operating system. It is non-destructive so it wasn't a big deal. I just had to slowly re-install patches and observe behavior. Oddly I was able to patch back up to 10.4.9 without the issue re-occuring so the root cause is still a mystery to me.
    edit
Patch gone bad maybe? I tried re-applying the 10.4.9 combo before attempting the archival install route with no success. I know that has been suggested many times. Apparenty it solves many issues, but it failed to solve mine.

  • Why would the fan on my macbook be constantly runs, even when no applications are running.  Why?

Why would the fan on my MacBook constantly run?  Even when I have no applications running?  Is there a way to determine what is causing this to happen?

JAWade, try resetting the SMC and pram. Not always, but often those resets help problems like yours. Follow these instructions exactly.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Why does my mac pro fan run at high speed?

My Mac Pro cooling fan started running at high speed.  Tried all the shutdown and restart options but didn't help.  Suggestions?

The fan runs if something is overheating or if a sensor has failed or there is a problem with the SMC. So, reset the SMC - Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). If that does not stop the fan from running then check for a runaway application:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
If the problem still persists then create a new admin user account, logout of your account and log into the new account. See if this fixes the problem.
If none of the above help, then you may have a hardware issue such as a defective sensor.

  • Why does error 200279 occur at high speeds only?

I am using a VI very much like the one attached here, and as my motor speeds up and the period value decreases, the vi fails, and error 200279 shows up as displayed in the attached 2 jpg images. This VI is reading the period value of an encoder by rising edges.  The error does not show up at low speeds, only high speeds.  Hardware is wired through USB ports on PC.  Using Labview 2012 and Windows 7.
Do I need to specify the samples per channel for the READ in the case structure to eliminate this error?  The error only occurs when the period gets quite short, e.g. 9ms or so.  At higher period values (slower motor speeds) the error does not appear.  I am using the counters built into the cDAQ9174 chassis  and the NI 9401 module to read the period values of my encoder.  What is happening at high speeds to cause this error?  I thought that the setting on the DAQ Timing VI required that 16 periods are read every iteration, so, why is it saying that it is trying to read samples that are no longer available?
Also, is the "Append Array" building up a large array that is being carried in the SHIFT REGISTER and causing things to slow down?  There are a huge number of periods occuring with an encoder at 120 ticks/revolution.  should I try to keep this array truncated or something to reduce the size of the data being handled for each iteration?  Can this large array be causing the 200279 error?
    Thanks,
    Dave

I think there's a combination of things that could be contributing.  I don't have time for a full explanation right now, here's some quick mods I did to the code you posted.  Essential changes are:
    - made separate loop for collecting data into a big array.  (Maybe you can consider dumping to file instead of growing an array in memory?)
    - used a queue to transfer data between loops
    - increased the buffer size dramatically while still calculating average of only the most recent periods
    - reduced the acquisition loop rate -- expect to retrieve more data points per iteration
There are a couple other things I'd probably add or change with more time, but this minimal set of mods should help some.

    Hello,
I' ve upgraded BIOS from 1.20 to 1.40, and my computer started to restart automaticly after few minutes. the fan keeps running at high speed all the time
    Anyone know why?

Question: does the notebook work properly besides the fast running fan?
Generally speaking after the BIOS upgrade you should always load the BIOS default settings.
In BIOS press F9 (load default) and then press F10 to save changes.
    Try it out
