Why does my TM/TC back up so much?

Before I refer this to AppleCare, I wonder if anyone on this forum can help?
I am waiting for AppleCare to call me back on another matter, but my excellent Level 2 geek is on hoiday so it may be a while before he comes back to me.
The reasons I am dealing with AppleCare, in case they are relevent to this current problem, are:  replaced optical drive, replaced video card, replaced LCD - all at 30 months old and all in the past 6 weeks!  Also, duplicated iCal/Calendar events and non-sync'd events between my iPad and iMac (now resolved, a corrupt version of iTunes) and more latterly a suspected corrupt partition map on the iMac as I cannot create a new partition.
But, on the assumption that those do not affect my Time Machine to Time Capsule transfers, here is my current problem ...
I run a 27" i7 1TB iMac with 16GB of RAM under MacOSX.6.8 and I have recently acquired at 2TB Time Capsule, to which I backed up my 669.45GB full HD via Ethernet.  I am now backing up the iMac wirlessly.
I have a G4 Tower and a G4 eMac, both running under MacOSX.4.11, on my network and they appear on my iMac's Desktop as networked devices.  I have an Alias to my HP DeskJet 840C printer which is connected to the eMac by wire and I have Chicken of the VNC as an Alias so that I can lazily control the two G4s from the comfort of my lounge should the rare need arise!
I run Stanford University's Folding@Home v7.1.52 24/7 and that is the only User process which, to the best of my knowledge, runs when the iMac is unattended.
I back up a 64GB iPad [3] via iTunes to the iMac from time to time, but there shouldn't be massive changes in that.
So why are my backups seemingly so large?
So large, in fact, that several take over an hour so that the default hourly backups are "late" and the iMac seems to be backing uop non-stop!
I have, in an attempt to stop cache files, etc, excluded from backing up (in case they changed so often that they might account for the number of files allegedly copied, if not the size) the following ...
/Library/Caches
~/Library/Caches
~/Documents/Parallels
~/Library/Appliction Support/TechTool Protection
I have seen posts on this forum that advise excluding the Time Machine file and network disks from backing up, but when I go to TC Preferences, I cannot find them shown so I cannot exclude them.
Each back-up appears to be in two parts, as demonstrated by the following most recent log ...
Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Data
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Data

... first it asked for 12.91GB and then 3.48GB - massively larger than i would expect for a machine left unattended all day.  It backed up less, but that's what it asked for.
And 44,382 and 34,176 files respectively?  Where on earth did they come from.  I'm aware, or think I am aware, that many seemingly single files are in fact a number os smaller files - but even so!
Recent sizes backed up, for which logs are still available, are (in GBs) ...
96.55 + 4.62
12.76 + 12.76
2.79 + 4.03
3.50 + 2.76
3.34 + 2.79

3.44 + 2.87
2.88 + 12.85
3.44 + 2.87
3.44 + 2.84
Note the two of them at over 90GB!  What on earth are those?
I'm pretty sure that TC is an incremental back-up so I would have expected much much smaller files!
Anyone help whilst my excellent AppleCare contact is away will be very much appreciated!
Thanks.

Thanks, Pondini, much food for thought on there and I will read it all in more detail later.
And what a veritable gem BackupLoupe is, Bob, and I am grateful for you pointing me toward it.  It has already given me some pointers and looks to be £3.29 very well spent.  I mention those pointers below.
I had, before seeing Pondini's post, looked at the BackupLoupe indeces on the very large 90+GB back-up and identified a Sparse Disk Image file of around 75GB as being the major component.  Quite why that changed I do not know as I cannot recall modifying the contents (I may have done, it is an archive file to which I add data from time to time, I just can't recall so doing in the last couple of days), but I have nevertheless now excluded it (and a few other unimportant dmg archive files) from future back-ups and I shall see if that helps.
I also have another sparse image file which contains approximately 35,000 jpg files amounting to 8.45GB.  This is currently "open" and mounted on the Desktop and is being accessed by the application Change Desktop (http://www.bergstrand.org/brian/software/ChangeDesktop/) which changes the desktop picture every "n" minutes using pictures from the mounted disk image.
I have not added or deleted any jpgs to or from that dmg for at least ten days, but it seems to be registering as changed from time to time and this, after reading Pondini's link, seems to account for the periodic "larger than usual" backups.  I wonder whether Change Desktop works in such a way that the content appears to be changing to TM?  I can't see how, as it merely reads files into RAM (I am assuming, I have no real idea of how it works) but it is an academic question, really, as that dmg is also now excluded.
All this is unproven theory so far, but there seems to be enough circumstantial evidence to at least point the finger of suspicion at these dmgs.  There are seven of them in total, amounting to 147.93GB, all in one archive folder in Documents and I have now excluded them all.
It seems to be working as the only TM/TC back-up to have executed since that exclusion runs as follows ...

The reason I cancelled the deletion, see the log, was because it seemd to be taking an absolute age to "finish up" and I was worried it might be hanging and I wanted to get this post done before calling it a day and retiring to bed.
Thanks for excellent advice, Bob and Pondini.  I shall investigate Pondini's link, etc. in due course as thre seems some excellent information there and I shall also look around BackupLoupe to see what other facilities it provides.
I shall report back when I have sufficient evidence to be sure my overly large back-ups are a thing of the past -but it's looking good right now!
Very many thanks for the most excellent advice, Guys.

When i re-open a folder like 'Documents', why does it resize itself back to a small 6x4" window.  Can someone educate me how to get it to memorise the window to open the size it was closed?

Why does Calendar not go back to all entries in list mode after upgrading to iOS6?

I have an iPhone 5 running at iOS7.1.1. The Calendar list mode previous to iOS 6 showed all past entries, which I found very useful. After the upgrade, it only showed the previous 12 months (as I recall). All past entries are still present, you just have to exit list mode to see them. I'm asking this now after finding the forum for the answer to rediscover the list function in iOS 7.

In Firefox 3.6 and later on Windows you can hide the "Menu Bar" via "View > Toolbars" or via the right-click context menu on a toolbar.
Press F10 or press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the "Menu Bar" temporarily.
Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the "Menu Bar" or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide (click on an entry to toggle the state).

  • Why does SL automattically turn back on when I shut down?

Why does my mac mini automatically restart when I shut down? I shut down via the normal methods (apple menu, Shut down...) and as the shut down process finishes the computer automatically restarts and goes to the log in screen, If I shut down via the log in screen it turn's off. What gives?
Shouldn't it just shut down when I ask it to and not return me to the log in interface ?
    Help please.Thanks all.

Seems that some process is calling it back.

Probably a process in your account and not systemwide.
Go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items, and remove them. BShutdown and test. If not go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Test.

  • Why does Firefox send me back a few pages when I attempt to type into a text box???

I am sick and tired of this insane bug. It affects me on a daily basis. 20% of the time I attempt to type anything into any text box, for every keypress, Firefox will treat them as requests to 'go back' and it launches me several pages backwards through my browsing history in the tab. I then I have to skip forward and attempt filling it in again. It usually works after 1-2 attempts but like i said this is happening 20% of the time on text input forms, especially FARK.com.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Why does time machine go back less than a month?

    clearly, i'm doing something wrong...
i'm in the process of cleaning up stuff from my external drives.  sometime in the fall, i switched my time machine backup to a larger drive.  i did my best to follow the instructions for transferring over a time machine backup, and it didn't work.  i still have the old TM database, but time machine wouldn't recognize it.  so i lived with it and got on with my life, starting a new TM backup.
today, i just realized that it goes back less than a month.  what is THAT about?  before you ask, it's NOT a disk space issue.  on a 2 TB drive, i currently have 1.23 TB of available space.  there's plenty of ROOM for further backups, but it's just not keeping them.  please help... i love time machine, and it's saved my bacon on a number of different occasions.  but on many of those occasions, i had to go back quite a bit further than 3 weeks to restore what i needed.  if that's all i'm going to get from time machine, it's usefulness to me is slashed by about 80%.

Time Machine automatically deletes older snapshots to make room for new ones. If your backup history is shorter than you expect, it may be because you're backing up one or more large files frequently.
Virtualization software such as VMware, Parallels, or VirtualBox creates a large virtual-disk container that is constantly changing, so it has to be backed up every time Time Machine runs. That will quickly fill up any backup destination.
You should exclude the virtual-disk file(s) from your Time Machine backups. To do that, click the Options button in the  Time Machine preference pane. You may also be able to do it in the virtualization app's settings. Back up the files on the virtual disk from within the guest system, using a native backup application.
A compromise solution is to create a "snapshot" of the virtual machine in the virtualization software (not a Time Machine snapshot.) That will give you a single large file that never changes and only has to be backed up once. All the subsequent changes will be stored in a new file that's initially much smaller, but will grow over time. You should still exclude that file from TM backup. If you ever need to restore the VM from Time Machine, you'll have a working setup, which will make it easy for you to restore the rest of the data from within the guest system.
Another common cause of large TM snapshots is native OS X disk images. If you store a lot of data on one or more writable disk images, they should be in "sparsebundle" format, which will be backed up much more efficiently than any other format. A sparsebundle will not be backed up at all while the image is mounted. Make sure you unmount the image often so it can be backed up. Consider eliminating large read/write disk images from your workflow, if possible.

Sorry, but if you have forgotten the password for your encrypted backup, you'll have to start all over again:
Make sure that the password you use is one that you'll remember. If you encrypt an iPhone backup in iTunes and forget your password, you won't be able to restore from backup, and your data will be unrecoverable.
If you can't remember the password and want to start again, you must perform a full software restore and choose set up as a new device when iTunes prompts you to select the backup from which to restore.

    thanks Pat. its fully updated.
Did you go to the mfgr's. Web site, and look at the driver downloads, and then verifying that you have the latest one installed? The reason that I ask is that the OS, and most driver update utilities, will be about 6 mos. out of date, if not more.
Also, new computers are loaded with a "master" disc, that was probably created at least 6 mos. before it was used to setup your computer, if not a year. The drivers are very old. With a new computer, the first two things that I do are: clean off any "bloatware," that the mfgr. installed, and then update the OS, and ALL drivers. I have seen drivers that are 3 - 4 years old on a new factory build. All good custom builders, will not install bloatware, and will update the OS and all drivers, before delivery. On an assembly line, that will never happen.
    Good luck,

  • Why does firefox keep going back my a previous page after i want to go elsewhere?

when I am in google looking for images and i go to change my search criteria, firefox goes back to the previous page i was on right after i hit my arrow to go. then i have to do this time and time again. and it's getting frustrating!

    Hello Mandy.
I can't think of a scenario where Firefox would make itself the default browser against the user's consent. Still, go into Tools > Options > Advanced > General > System defaults and untick that small box at the bottom of the window that talks about Firefox asking you each time it starts.
Hopefully that will fix the issue.
