Why does plugin-container.exe so often crash when closing PDF files?

When I load multiple PDFs in Firefox to check their content for errors one by one, closing one PDF tab to reveal another PDF tab very often causes plugin-container.exe to crash, which means I have to reload each remaining PDF tab to view the remaining files. This of course defeats the purpose of opening more than one at a time, and actually adds about 5 times as many clicks to the whole process because I have to clear the error and reload each page, then it might happen again or might not. It doesn't happen every time I close a PDF, but about 1 in 4 times.
I realize I have two versions of Acrobat installed (Acrobat 9.5.5 and Reader 11.0.10), and thus two Firefox plugins, but for the record this same thing happens on other computers that just have Reader or just have Acrobat, so it's not an issue of conflicting plugins. Though I did notice you aren't allowed to disable just one or the other -- deactivating one deactivates both. At first it seems not to, but if you reload the plugins page, you'll see both are actually off.
Windows coughs up the following error report when plugin-container.exe crashes, but Firefox says nothing, I guess because the plugin-container is a standalone app:

Appreciate any help available in resolving this crash.

Somehow this bug came up on my radar yesterday later in the day: the first two comments indicate different plugins, and the third refers to the Acrobat plugin:
<blockquote>This seems to happen if Adobe Reader is used for displaying PDF documents (pdfjs.disabled set to true and Preferences > Applications > PDF to "Adobe Reader (in Firefox)").<br><br>Opening two tabs displaying PDFs and closing one crashes the other one.<br><br>Was able to reproduce with Firefox 36.0.1 and Adobe Reader plugin "Adobe Acrobat 11.0.10.32". When I tried to reproduce it later again in the same profile (or on Nightly and Beta), the tab didn't crash.</blockquote>

Sounds like your issue, but it's puzzling that they got a tab to crash and in your case only plugin-container.exe crashed.

  • Why does plugin-container.exe start 15 times (and then stop) during shutdown (taking MINUTES to shut down)?

FF takes forever to close (minutes). When using process explorer I see that as many as 15 instances of plugin-container.exe will be opened during the shut down process. I think this means that a plugin is crashing. I disabled all of the plugins and it still happened (but maybe not so many times). An obvious answer is to leave FF open but that seems kinda dumb. I haven't seemed to be able to find this addressed anywhere. I am using updated Xp, on a many year old machine. Please help.

  • Why does plugin-container.exe hog so much cpu usage?

When FF is running with some application (ie flash or maybe shockwave) or some type of embedded function, the cpu usage for plugin-container is generally between 60 and 80 percent. This causes extreme lag and reduced functionallity. Quite frankly it is extremely annoying to have things run so slowly.

  • Why does plugin-container.exe not start up with Firefox 3.6.15 anymore?

I have Firefox 3.6.15, Firefox 4.0 RC1 and Pale Moon 3.6.15 on my PC. Even though each .exe file is in a separate folder, if I start up say, Firefox 4.0 RC1 for awhile and then close it and start up Firefox 3.6.15 my settings are messed up and I have to fix some of them. I just noticed in Task Manager that plugin-container.exe does not start up with FF 3.6.15 and FF 4.0 RC1 and Pale Moon 3.6.15 anymore. I'm not sure what I did to cause this. I even went into Mozilla's folder and tried to start up plugin-container manually, but it does not start up. I'm at a loss, do I have to do a clean install of three browsers to fix this?

  • Why is plugin-container.exe involved in receiving email?

Why is plugin-container.exe involved in receiving email? The plugin-container.exe is activated and uses abut 20% of CPU while receiving email into my Outlook Express. I use Windows XP Pro on a desktop PC.

Plugin-container.exe is part of Firefox, not Outlook Express. If you are trying to fetch an embedded video in a message, that might use the plugin container if Firefox is your default browser, but for links and images I would not expect that to be used.

  • Why FF plugin-container.exe trying to capture my screen?

  • Plugin-container.exe causes windows crash that causes Firefox to crash

Any help that can be given with this problem would be appreciated.
I'm running an older machine (Windows XP SP2). I was having a problem with Firefox 9.0 redirecting my search results to other sites. Scans with Norton and Malwarebytes showed no malware on the system. I upgraded afew months ago to Firefox 12.0 hoping that would fix the problem - thinking it was Malware and not bothering to check the support website here. That didn't fix the problem. So over the weekend I uninstalled Firefox 12.0 completely from the system - including my profile information. I did a clean install of Firefox 17.0. I think the redirect problem is fixed, but now I have a new problem - nearly every website I go to I get a windows error "Runtime Error. Virtual C++ Runtime library plugin-container.exe R6030 - CRT not initialized." This locks up Firefox and causes it to become unresponsive (so I can't get a Firefox crash report).

First try to update XP to Service Pack 3 and all other most recent updates. Then try again.

  • Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (admplugin.apl) crash when opening PDF files

    Hi,
I did spend some time today trying to get Adobe Reader 8.1.2 to run on a Citrix Access Essential 2.0 server.
    Setup
    Server OS:
    Windows Server 2003 SP2 - fully patched.
    Other software:
    Office 2003 Standard, Danish, SP3
    Symantec Antivirus 10.1
    Adobe Reader 8.1.2, Danish
The installation is clean (1 week old).
    Problem description:
When opening PDF files, Adobe Reader crashes before showing any content from the PDF file. The module crashing is admplugin.apl.
    Work-arounds tried:
Uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (DK).
    Disabling Antivirus (service stopped)
Replacing admplugin.apl with admplugin.apl from Adobe Reader 8.0
Uninstalling DK version and installing US version.
Adding user to local Administrators to exclude any permission related problems.
Deleting Adobe folders from users profile Application Data\Adobe\... and Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\...
    Turn DEP off
    Solution:
Finally I gave up and installed 7.0.9 (Danish). It works as expected.
It seems that the problem is known and a few user has reported this. One Adobe KB article mentions the problem, and the solution is to disable some 3. party diagnostic/support tools provided by DSL providers. This is definitively not the issue in this installation.
Anybody from Adobe having any input to this problem?
    Best regards from Denmark!

    Hi,
I am having a similar issue with Ver 8.1.2 running over cirtix with a similar setup to Jans-Peter.
The difference is that Reader opens fine but when you try to edit preferences it crashes.
This only happens on an citrix session. If I run reader on the server directly it works OK.
However after reading above I can replicate the problem on the server by moving or deleting the ADMPlugin.apl file.
    Any further ideas at all?
    Mark

  • Safari crashes when opening PDF file- why?

Every time I click on a link which does not open an HTML file but instead tries to open a PDF file within the Safari browswer window, the spinner spins for a very long time and eventually Safari crashes.
I can download pdf files but sometimes the website doesn't tell you what the button is going to do.
    Safari version 1.3 (v312)
No use running anything beyond Panther on this G3 due to memory & speed issues.

Unlike Safari RSS, Safari 1.3 does not have native PDF support. It looks like there might be a plugin issue at work here, perhaps a faulty adobe installation or plugin incompatibility. Make sure your plugins, e.g. Schubert-It PDF Browser and Adobe Reader, are up to date and if they are, you might want to consider reinstalling them.
Alternatively, and I don't know if this applies to Panther or not, ensure that 'PDF Image' is unchecked in QT's MINE settings. (System Preferences > QuickTime > Advanced > MIME Settings... > under 'Images - Still image files')

  • Firefox often crashes when closing tabs

I've noticed that, when I have multiple tabs open in the same window, FireFox has a tendency to crash when I close one of the tabs. This seems to be more likely when the next tab is still loading. This doesn't seem to happen with closing separate FF windows, or if I move a tab to a new window and then close it.
Also, there is usually no option to send a crash report. I just get a Windows pop up that says firefox has stopped working.
