Why does time machine show the backup failed

The time machine icon in the menu bar keeps showing up with a "!" in the middle of it, which is suppose to mean the back up failed.
Yet when I go to System Preference, it shows the backup succeeded.
The menu bar shows the last successful back up was on Sept 13.
System Preferences shows the last successful backup was an hour ago.  (15 Sept.)
How do I get these two to agree with each other?
Rebooting the computer doesn't seem to help.
I'm running 10.9.4 now.

LonerT:
Thanks for looking at the HomeSharing problem
I have three discussions open that are related.  The first one shows that the ATV appears to open the extra DAAP connections, which in turn appears to be related to Homesharing problem.
Airport opens multiple DAAP connections
Numerous ATV DAAP ports to MacBook Pro
Cannot turn off Homesharing to AppleTV: IPv6 connections remain
This one (not mine) points at the Bonjour Sleep Proxy Service as being involved in the DAAP problem.
DHCP conflicts between AppleTV and Airport Extreme repeater
And this is the "other side" of the problem, which I have also experienced
Apple TV homesharing keeps dropping out ...
I note that my AppleTV started out with a DHCP address of 10.0.1.16, it jumped to 10.0.1.20 and then migrated up, one address at a time, to 10.0.1.25.
Given the number of systems I have on my subnet, if they are handed out in order, and given that I just moved from 192.168.1.0/24 private space, the highest address should be around 12.
I have two Apple TVs.  One on Wireless remote from the ATX and connected to an Airport Express and one connected via ethernet directly to the AEX.  I don't use the remote one.  It should not have been turned on (activated) for at least two weeks, yet the AEX is still sending out ARP requests for the last IP address that it had and my laptop still associates the AEX MAC with the last address assigned to the remote ATV.

  • Since installing Lion why does Time Machine shows backup was delayed?

Ever since we stalled Lion after we backup with Time Machine the display quickly changes to the alert symbol that backup was delayed how can I change this. I have backed up four times.

Time Machine shows a backup this morning at 11:58 but I didn't have the external hard drive plugged in. How is this possible?

Because the drive was disconnected Time Machine made a local snapshot on your Mac.

I am trying to confirm the time at which a particular backup occurred using an external hard drive that I have since misplaced. Although time machine lists the backup times for some backups, it does not list them for all, including the one in question. Can someone help?

Okay, I've sussed it.  I saw a link to another discussion that hadn't turned up in any of my searches before I posted the question above.
My Tosh HDD was formatted to FAT 32 and therefore would not be backed up by Time Machine.  I removed all data from it - nightmare as I hadn't enough space to put it on the macbook HDD, but, after trawling through numerous photos and deleting rubbish for hours, I finally made enough space and copied all data across.  Then, after clearing the data from the Tosh HDD, I used disk utilitity to reformat it to Mackintosh OS Extended.  Chose the option without kournalling because I'm not baking up onto this disk and so don't need it - according to some other discussions I found.
When it was done I check on time machine in system prefs and once I selected options, I was able to remove it from the excluded from backups list.  Hey presto.  Now I'm moving my photo library and my music library onto the Tosh HDD and my macbook should start to breath again.  Hurray.

  • HT201250 Does time machine compress the data in backup?

I have got to replace my internal hard drive so have to back up just everything to an ext drive.
When I use 'time machine' to back up to an external disk, does that disk have to be larger than the file size on my iMac?
Does Time machine compress the data?( eg will 1TB fit on a 500 gig external drive?)
    Thanks

No, Time Machine doesn't compress the data. I recently started a new TIme Machine backup, and the first backup required the same amount of space as it was backing up (actually a little bit more during the backup process).

  • Why does Time Machine Hang OSX when a USB drive does not respond?

I use USB drives to store photo data. When I back up the drives using Time Machine to a Time Capsule, If I have added a large amount of data to the USB drive, the backup will consistently fail with the drive hung. I can see the drive in finder, but I cannot see the directory structure. Often OSX hangs too and I cannot even get to finder, just the whirling colored wheel. Sometimes the system has entered sleep mode and it will not wake up. I if I am using the monitor, I can open the MAC Book Pro cover and the screen there shows alternately, a blue screen and the screen wallpaper, flipping back and forth but otherwise unresponsive. If I turn the USB drive off the OS recovers and Time Machine completes, usually indicating a backup failure (but not always). The drive is always very hot under these circumstances, indicating that the system is issuing repetitive operations to the drive. I should emphasize that I am not writing to the USB drives during backup, Time Machine is just reading the drive. So several questions:
    1) How in the world can a non system drive hang the Operating System? This is a big no-no for a supposedly multi-tasking Operating System.
    2) I use Aperture 2.1 to store data on the USB drives with no problems (at least so far). Why would Time Machine drive the USB drive so hard that it fails? I had the same problem using a USB drive with iTunes. It completely fried the drive by writing to it too intensively during one of the frequent software updates. Is there no throttle mechanism in OSX that limits the disc activity so that the throttle mechanism is not the failure of the drive itself?
    3) Does Apple have a list of USB drives that it has validated to be able to work with it's system reliably?

Are the USB drives powered from the computer or do they have their own power supplies.
There is a limit to how much power can be drawn from each USB port and also a total limit. If you exceed this, unexpected things can happen.

  • "Time Machine Error   The backup volume is read only"

Lately, every time I try to backup to my Time Capsule using Time Machine it fails and I get a message saying "Time Machine Error The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume, open system preferences and choose Time Machine" So I do that and I see the Time capsule listed. I don't want to select anything but the Time Capsule, cuz what else do I have, right? Am I wrong in assuming the "backup volume" is the Time Capsule? Anyway, I have tried changing the permissions on the time capsule, but when I get the "get info" box for the time capsule, there is not an option to change those settings, they are grayed out. Every thing worked well for about a week and then this started. My backup volume must have been "Read & Write" at first, because I can see what was backed up when I open Time Machine. Anybody have a clue what's going on? How can I make the back up volume "Read & Write" again and why did it change to "Read Only?"

Nope, I am using the same passwords as ever, both users have the same password, BTW. The password I gave to the Time Capsule is different, tho, but that password is for the wireless aspect of the Time Capsule, so that wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it?
I also get a message box that says "Disk Repair The disk "Backup of XXX's Computer" was not repairable by this computer, it is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible." This box appears in conjunction with the appearance of the Norton's virus scan box scanning the time capsule.

  • Does time machine do incrementals backups or full backups each time?

does time machine do incremental backups or full backups each time? in other words, is it only backing up changes or everything that itis told to backup?

+is it only backing up changes or everything that it is told to backup?+
Time Machine makes physical copies of new and changed files for each backup but it just establishes hard links to files previously backed up that still exist on the source rather than making new copies of them.
This Ars Technica article explains how the hard links work.

  • Why does Time Machine disappear?

Why does Time Machine disappear each restart?

Suggest that you power cycle the entire network, as things are likely out of sequence
Power every device off on the network, order is not important
Wait a few moments, then start the modem first and let it run by itself for 2-3 minutes
Start the Time Capsule the same way
Start each network device one at a time about a minute apart
    Check for proper operation

  • If i move itune to external drive does time machine still have backup?

if i move itune to external drive does time machine still have backup?
I just moved my itunes off my macbook pro because it was taking up too much space and put it on an external hard drive. i have a second external hard drive that i use for time machine. when i update time machine next will my itunes files be removed from the backup since they are no longer on my internal hard drive (what time machine backs up?) basically, i want to make sure i have a second copy of my itunes besides the one on my first external hard drive and i was wondering if time machine will still have all of that data (on the second external hard drive).
i cant find this answer anywhere!!! thanks so much!!!

Check to see whether or not it's excluded in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences.
Items deleted from the hard drive won't be deleted from the backup until the backup location runs out of space.

  • I keep getting this error when trying to backup time capsule with time machine. The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data-1/Dan's iMac.sparsebundle" is already in use.

I keep getting this error when trying to backup time capsule with time machine. The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Dan’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time.
Pull the power cable from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cable back into the back of the Tme Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • Time Machine Error:  "The backup disk image could not be created."  Help.

I have two Macbook Pro's. One is able to backup to the Time Capsule with no problems. The other connects just fine to Airport Utility, but I get the following error after I attempt to backup: Time Machine Error: "The backup disk image could not be created."
I have reset the Time Capsule several times, so that is not the fix.
The first thing I see when attempting to open Time Machine is the following message: :The storage location for Time Machine Backups can't be found." It gives me the option to setup the Time Capsule, which I select. The next thing I select is to Change Disk. The window that opens has the Icon with Three people on it. The name of that Icon is The Moreman Time Capsule. I select it, and enter the password I created. I then choose to Backup. Then I choose to backup now. That is when I get the error: Time Machine Error: "The backup disk image could not be created."
Any ideas? Has anyone encountered this problem?

You have to delete the .dmg file and start over. This happened to me 3 times already, I finally switched to Déjà Vu, works perfect and only once a day instead of 24 times a day.

  • HT3275 TIME MACHINE ERROR: The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Sean McGuire's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 1).

I can select a disk (Time Capsule) and initiate the backup.  It only "waits to back up" then "making backup disk available" and remains frozen there.  I tried to update the software a while back and was unsuccessful, I think that may be the issue.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  This is the error message I receive.
