Why i can't erase the hd in disk utility

i'm using os x lion and can't erase my hd using disk utility, what i need to do is create a bootcamp partition but the system won't let me unless i first erase my hd, recover using time machine and then try again the bootcamp partition, any help?
thx!

Your  hard disk is probably fragmented. You have several options:
1. Use a 3rd party disk defragmenter like idfrag and defragment your drive (may or may not work)
2. Go to disk utility and repair the volume (works for some)
3. Do a complete reinstall (like you said)
I'm sorry, but I don't really know how to wipe it. Try some Google searches or take it to an apple store to get some proffesional help. You could always try the other two options though.
Good luck, sorry I can't help much,

  • Can't erase (rewriteable) DVD using Disk Utility

I'm trying to erase a Maxell DVD +RW in my Mac Pro's SuperDrive, but when I click on Erase in Disk Utility (I've tried both Quickly and Completely, and both the drive and the disc itself) it just spins for 30 seconds, and then stops (with all the data still there).
I also downloaded PermanentEraser and dropped the disc icon into the app icon, but it also spun for a while but did nothing. I tried selecting all the files on the disc and manually dragging them to the Trash, but when I try to empty it I receive an error code of -61.
What's going on? Does DiskWarrior somehow create startup disks which can't be erased?

Hey, if you do that ... you can throw disk directly to the trash. if you used fast
erase option, you can only use disk utility !!! trying to that with others software make disk unusable.
when I started to use rewritable disks I did this mistake over more of 10 disks, before I understanded it. Toast warn you, when you use fast erase.

  • Can one use the 10.3 Disk Utility on a machine running 10.4?

    Greetings, everyone:
About a month ago, right before departing upon an international voyage, I purchased a used iBook G4 for a really good price off of eBay as I was apprehensive about dragging my much more expensive MacBook Pro along with me (and the iBook handled Finale, the music notation software I use, and its internet terminal responsibilities more than adequately). While the iBook arrived as advertised in superb condition with 10.4.11 freshly installed on the system, the installation discs that came with it are 10.3 installation discs, leading me to believe that the seller uses 10.4 on his primary computer and had simply installed it on the iBook as a courtesy.
As nothing has gone awry with the computer so far, my question is more of a precautionary one than anything else: if I were to ever need to check my iBook's HDD for errors, could I boot the machine off the 10.3 installation disc and run Disk Utility from there, or would that version's DU no longer be compatible with the computer as it is now running 10.4? I suppose I should acquire a 10.4 installer at some point, but seeing as it's really only a computer I'd use on extended trips/as a backup in case something happens to my MBP, I would rather not if I absolutely didn't have to.
    Thank you in advance,
    Benjamin

Hi Benjamin, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Supposedly, if the Discs are 10.3.9 you can use them to repair 10.4.x, but I doubt ant 10.3 Install discs are 10.3.9, less than that is a no-no.

  • Can't erase Macintosh HD with disk utility in recovery mode

    Hello Apple users,
Two days ago, my MacBook pro was suddenly forced to turn off and after restarting my MacBook it did not turn on anymore. Every time after the *boing* an apple sign with a status bar appears and if this bar is at 1/4 the macbook turns off again and the whole process starts again.
Luckily i was able to acces recovery mode and surprisingly my hard drive seems to be OK, so i was able make a backup of my most important files. I thought te best option for now would be erasing my macintosh hd and install osx yosemite as a new macbook.
But here is the problem: when I try to erase my Mac hd, i get this message (not sure if this is te correct translation from the dutch message) "not able to erase, disk can not be unmounted". I searched google for solutions and I found some topics saying that this isnt possible, because it is also the startup drive.
Are hou guys familiar with this problem and are there any solutions? The recovery drive wasn't available, so the recovery runs via the 'internet recovery'.
    Thanks in advance

If you were using Apple's BootCamp and received this message, quit it and open Disk Uility in your Applicaitons/Utilities folder.
Select the Macintosh HD partition on the left and select Erase and Erase Free Space > Zero option and let it complete (important) this will check the spare space for bad sectors that can cause issues formatting partitions.
Once it's completed, try creating a partiton again in BootCamp.
If that doesn't work, then hold command option r keys down while connected to a fast internet connection, Internet Recovery should load (spinning globe) and then in that Disk Utility, select your entire internal drive and click > First Aid > Repair Disk and Permissions.
    reboot and attempt Bootcamp again.
If you still get a error, it might be that you have OS X data on the bottom area where BootCamp partition needs to go. This would occur if you had the drive or computer for a long time or wrote a large amount of files to the drive and nearly filling it up and then reduced some, but it left traces in the area BootCamp needs to go.

  • HT4859 my iphone is listed twice in manage storage under backups.  can i erase the old one?

my iphone is listed 2x in manage storage under backups.  i think it's because verizon replaced a broken phone, but they helped me set the new replacement one up so i would think the old one shouldn't appear at all.  can i erase the old one?
this is on my iphone under: settings-icloud-storage&backup-manage storage-
it shows the old phone latest back up date the day that i sent it back to verizon (6.7GB). they recommend a back up before you send it to them.  the current iphone is 7.2GB, so yes i have been having storage problems.  i just want to make sure it will be ok to erase the old one iphone.

    dhmarvin wrote:
why would someone need the old backup?  isn't everything from the old back up on the new iphone backup?
I just wanted to be clear that if you delete it, it's permanently gone.  So make sure you check your phone to be sure it has all your data before deleting it.  If it does, go ahead.
when verizon helped me set up the replacement phone, it transferred the 6.7GB to the new one right?
I don't know what Verizon did; judging from the size of your new backup it would seem that they did.  Check your phone.  If it has all your data, go ahead and delete the old backup.

  • Why i can not see the columns of "Tax Category" in transaction code FS00

    Dear Experts,
Why i can not see the columns of "Tax Category" and "Posting without tax allowed" in tab of "Control Data"  transaction code FS00?
How can i add the columns of "Tax Category" and "Posting without tax allowed"?
    Looking forward to your reply.
    Best Regards,

    Hi,
Go to transaction OBD4, and check whether the field "Tax category" is suppressed in group "Account control" for your GL account group.
If not, then go to OB26 and check the field status for the same field for create, change activity.

You put the internal drive in an enclosure. If you choose to keep the drive, you don't need to erase it.

  • How do I reformat hard drive when I can't erase the disk?

    Machine: imac, OS 10.6.8
Initial Problem: Finder kept crashing for all users immediately after start up. As a result I was unable to try trashing finder preferences as recommended in this forum and elsewhere.
    Attempted solutions:
    1. Initially seemed unable to boot from Snow Leopard Installation Disk
    2. Connected to another imac using firewire and booting problem computer into target mode
    3. Ran Techtool pro from master machine. Hard drive and hardware fine but reported need to format disk on target machine.
    4. Tried to install new os onto target drive using disk drive on master machine. Error message reported being unable to find target drive, even though it was showing on desktop of master machine
    5. Tried to erase disk using disk utility on master machine, but error message stating unable to unmount target drive
    6. Successfully rebooted using snow leopard installation disk, but unable to instal. Error message stated that the computer was not available. i.e. it had the yellow triangle with exclamation masrk
    7. Tried to erase hard drive using disk utility from installation disk, but was unable to do so. The process commenced to unmount the disk, started to erase but stopped before task completed. Tried a second time with same result.
Obviously the machine needs complete reformatting. I made a backup before starting this series of unsuccessful attempts. I suspect that I need to use terminal from the installation disk, but I am not sure which terminal command to use.
Can anyone tell me? Or have I overlooked some simpler solution?

Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • How can I erase the pictures in my iphone4s

How can I erase the photos in my phone.

It depends on where the photos are.  If they're in your camera roll (taken on your iPhone), you can delete them on your iPhone individually.  if they're in Photo Stream, you can also delete them on your iPhone (trash can in lower right).  Generally in other cases, you delete them on your computer and then sync.

  • Why  I can't find the overall status in billing document!?

    Hi,
Why I can't find the overall status in billing document? but I can find this status in table VBUK, some documents set 'B' in this field, some set 'C', all of them are Completed and the corresponding account documents are cleared. for this status is 'B',I can't archive these documents.
    Thanks.

    Dear Lance
Check the field Document object    i.e Document Status object .
    A     Order
    B     Purchase order
    F     Billing document
    K     Sales activities
    L     Delivery
    T     Shipment
    V     Shipping
    X     Others
Check if all your entries are F, if not find out which document and try to find out why it is not C.
    Do revert with your feedback
If it is still a problem , check some SAP notes
For e.g. Note 142368 - Segment VBUK missing in billing document
Header status segment VBUK is missing in the billing document. You can check this with the general table display (SE16).
It is not yet known why this segment is missing.
