Why is HD video playback quality poor?

When I play YouTube high-definition (720 or 1080) videos in Firefox in full screen mode, the play back is blurry compared to Internet Explorer; the same video, the same resolution - just a different browser. Why is this happening and what do I need to change in Firefox to get the same crisp high-definition video playback that is available in IE?

  • IPad 2 Video playback Quality Issue (Low Contrast and grayish black)

Does anyone notice that the video playback quality is really bad on the iPad 2? If you try to play any video (youtube, apple trailer, your own converted video) on the iPad 2, any black images will turn grayish... Just put your iPhone, iPod touch, or even the older iPad next to it, then you will notice a BIG difference. The color is similar to what happened when you set the gamma incorrectly on a display.
Also, you will notice this more if you change the orientation of the device, the contrast will be corrected for a fraction of a second.
I've tried this on other iPad 2 and they all share the same problem. I tried to talk to the Apple Genius Bar and they refused to give me a proper answer on this, instead simply claiming that is just the way it is... I wanted to refund this but I've passed the 14 days rule and also I got it from a authorized retailer and so Apple just won't take it back.
I believe it can be fixed by software... Any idea? or I shall throw it away T_T

I'm on the phone with apple support right now. I work at a post production house, and we/our clients keep having this issue - everything looks great on screen and on the ipad 1, and theres a huge gamma shift on the ipad 2. they need to fix this ASAP. like Jls21 already said, a lot of us use ipads for work purposes - unacceptable!
this thread ( https://discussions.apple.com/message/15100980#15100980 ) seems to blame the h.264 codec/compression settings…? does anyone know of another codec that prevents this gamma shift on the ipad 2?
this is from the tech specs page:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
is there anything that jumps out to anyone regarding workarounds for this issue?
we've used both Compressor and MPEG Streamclip - there's no quality difference between them, in case anyone is trying that.
okay so, i was transferred to a senior technical rep and he looked it up - apparently apple is getting a bunch of complaints about this issue and they've submitted it to their developers. the more people that call and complain, the higher up on the priority list it goes to be fixed in a software update. there is no workaround known, and it's a standard issue across all ipad 2's.

  • ITunes video playback quality is not that smooth

    Hello:
    Two questions--
    1. Why do the music videos I purchase on iTunes (and then play on iTunes) freeze up for a few seconds after I push play, but then otherwise playback is OK?
    2. Why does the "spinning beachball" appear almost everytime I press play for a video?
    Comment--
Given that my Mac more than meets the minimum system requirements for video playback, I think the videos should play smoothly from start to finish, especially at $1.99 a piece. I suspect that the playback bugs listed above are the result of iTunes not being that good/powerful of a video player. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved upon future iTunes software updates. In the meantime, I will not purchase anymore videos.
    Thanks.

Just updated iTunes to most recent version. Now I'm getting jerky video playback in BOTH iTunes and QT Pro (latest version). CPU use is very high but random; ditto with video playback (i.e., doesn't hang up on the same scene/time).
I had this issue a little over a year ago after updating iTunes to the then latest version. Got nowhere with Apple's "Service" texts. I played around with configs for a while and also re-installed iTunes. It has worked fine until yesterday (same symptoms as last time). As for the past "fix": nothing I can hang a hat on. Methinks Apple updated the version I re-installed with (tho' the version # was unchanged).

  • Why is the video loosing quality when i import?

i just downloaded the final cut pro x trial after wanting something more than imovie, and to be honest i much prefer it to the old final cut.
but someting is going wrong somewhere.
i record gameplay from my xbox and edit to and so on in imovie 11.
so i got final cut pro x trial, imprted my game clips into final cut from imovie, but it isnt as smooth for some reason. rather than running 100% smooth, it jumps a little bit, as if it were a scratched cd.
all the settings seem to be as they should be but im getting nowhere.
    any help is much appreciated.

What year is your iMac ... how much memory ... which graphics?  Have you gone into the Preferences under the Final Cut Pro menu and selected the Playback tab and set to Use Original or Optimized Media ... then under that set the Playback Quality to High Quality?

  • Why is the video playback on the 160 g ipod not as clear as the 80 gig ipod?

I recently got a new ipod 160 g classic. The video playback is not near as clear as it was on my 80 g classic. Is there some setting i have wrong. The video is washed out and has a yellow tint. I even replaced the unit, but it still looks the same.

Hi there, BDAqua, and thanks for the reply.  I just tried watching one of the non-DRM-protected videos in VLC, and I found that it glitched, too - but not in the same manner.  The glitch lasted for about two seconds and then self-corrected.
Checking my SMART status, it's verified, and I take that to mean that there were no issues.
I managed to catch an episode mid-stutter in windowed mode, and Activity Monitor had iTunes at 20.6%, considerably higher than anything else (all the other processes were in the single digits), but I had seen iTunes's CPU usage higher earlier - up to 27%, yet it didn't stutter at that point.
I have 4.55GB of free RAM and 510.42GB free HD space.  0 bytes of page-outs.  Actually, I've never seen it that low before, but I definitely suspect that's not the problem.
    Thanks,
    -Greg
    Edited: Corrected VLC test results.

  • Why is the video playback on safari so slow?, why is the video playback on safari so slow?

Recently my Safari is not keeping up with youtube video playback anymore. Firefox on the other hand works just fine. Has anybody else had this problem, or maybe a solution even?

  • Terrible video playback quality

    Hi all,
I am tearing my hair out wondering why all my video footage looks awful when played back in QT. I have tried playing .dv .mpg .avi files etc. and they are all jerky and disappointing. Footage has been captured by both SD camcorder and DV camcorder; even uncompressed PAL DV looks bad. However, when this footage is burned to DVD and watched on my TV DVD player the motion is silky smooth. I have even tried deinterlacing the footage with MPEG Streamclip but even that looks awful! In addition, self authored DVDs that look fine on a TV look rubbish when played on the Mac. Ideas?

Does it look bad AND jerky, or just stuttering?
Make a 6 second long snippet of one of the DV files. Save it as a self-contained movie. Try playing that. Any difference?
Now download VLC from videolan.org, play the same file and compare results.
Now repeat the process with the Activity Monitor CPU graph running. My wild guess is the video is crushing your CPU.

  • Qosmio G40-108 - dvd/video playback quality

Just bought the Qosmio G40-108 loaded with Vista Ultimate. Ead all the reports and went for the stunning display report. I am sorely disappointed with the quality of playback on DVD and avi (divX Xvid h264). The colors are wishy washy and not all that sharp.
Compared to my 3 year old Toshiba mid range machine running WXP it is pretty poor. I have not messed about with anything.
Am I missing something or is this the fault of Vista. I tried loading WXP but couldn't as it came up with the message "blocked" since WXP is a downgrade. Can anyone help?!! Please.

    I presume you are speaking about this other thread;
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums//thread.jspa?threadID=29745&messageID=107523#107523
Well, according to the second thread which you have posted the same video quality appears on another computer. So I dont think that your notebooks would malfunction.
    Regarding your XP installation;
The XP installation cannot be finished because you need to install firstly the Intel Matrix Storage Manger which can be downloaded from the Intel page or from the Toshiba page.
    bye

  • Playback quality poor when burning files to DVD

I am burning quicktime files to a DVD. (I want to keep them as quicktime files so the recipients of the DVD's can manipulate the files if needed.)
After burning the file (2.81 GB) to a DVD-R (4.7 GB capacity) The playback of the burned DVD file is odd. It seems to have all the information (video and audio) But it will freeze on the first video frame while the audio keeps going. Not sure why this is happening.
Does anyone have any ideas of how to prevent this? OR, possibly a different file format to use? I don't want the files in a an iDVD menu because then you can't extract the files and manipulate them with ease.
If anyone can help... THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE

I'm thinking you burned the dvd as a data dvd.
Your mac can't keep up with a video that is burned as a data dvd. You need to copy the DVD content to your hard drive to be able to play the video with no problems.

  • Video import quality poor on iMovie 4.0.1

    Hi-
I've not imported video from my miniDV camera for awhile and I seem to have a serious reduction in quality from previous projects. The images on the LCD of the camera are nice and bright and crisp but the images in iMovie are dark and grainy. I've played with all camera settings that I think might be at fault but there really isn't much to adjust in that regard. I'm wondering if it might be a QT compatibility issue. Here are the details:
    MDD G4 1.25ghz MP
    OS 10.4.8
    QT 7.1.5
    iMovie 4.0.1
    Sony DCR-TRV11
    Thanks - JAY

    Lennart Thelander wrote:
The LCD in the camera is designed to be used outdoors, so it's naturally much brighter than any computer.
Yes, but that wouldn't explain the difference between this and material imported into previous projects.
    Calibrate your monitor:
    http://www.danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6008.shtml
Actually, that made it worse, unfortunately.
Any specific reason you are using an old QT version?
I use a professional audio recording software and the QT upgrades are continuously giving it fits. I wait until I get the "all clear" signal from others on my list.

  • Poor quality HD video playback when in full screen?

I've recently purchased a late 2013 iMac 21.5" mid-range model and finding the video playback quality poor when opening it up to full screen. Does anyone else have this issue?? I was expecting similar quality to my HD tv when using the iPlayer app, but i@m even finding it poor when watching the HBO trailer on the Apple website for Game of Thrones. I have also been into my local Stormfront and found the same issue on both their 21.5 and 27" models on the shop floor.
Am I being too picky? The quality when it is in the small window is amazing.

The quality when it is in the small window is amazing.
One thing that pops into my mind is: what is the resolution/size/quality of the video you are watching? If it was created in a smaller size, then forcing it into showing on a bigger screen will always impact the quality significantly. You cannot enlarge a picture or video without significant quality loss (fuzzy/pixelation).

  • Poor CD playback quality with iTunes 7.2.0.35.

When I play CDs using iTunes the playback is very poor. There are popping sounds that are really annoying. There may also be a slight distortion.
The playback on Windows Media player is fine and the playback with Ubuntu (dual boot) sounds good as well.
Importing from CD works fine. The playback quality is good.
Why is iTunes CD playback quality so poor?

  • Why is the video inside FCP 6 slightly darker than the OS

Why is the video playback inside FCP 6.0.5 slightly darker than wehn I play the same Quick Time file just inside the normal OSX10.5?
I'm using a Cinema HD 23" monitor running at 1920x1200 and display profile is Cinema HD Calibrated
    Thx
    Kevin

It is darker because that is a more closely representational GAMMA as to what you will see on your external broadcast monitor. QT lightens the gamma to ensure that most computer monitors can see the footage. As stated, if you want the gamma to appear darker, enable FCP COLOR COMPATIBILITY in the QT preferences.
WHY does it look more like what you see in FCP when you view this on a PC? Well, that is the monitor that PC is using. Take this file, put it on 10 PC all with different monitors and you will see 10 different gammas. The monitors themselves can be set to certain DISPLAY PROFILES (look in your DISPLAYS section under COLOR)...so you can have a HUGE variety of looks.
The reason is because of the monitors and the computers driving them.

  • Video quality poor after placing into timeline, don't know why?

I've done some screen capture with Camtasia on a Windows machine. When I import it into FCP X the quality is fine when viewing prior to placing into the timeline. After I put it in the timeline I find that while editing that the video playback is now blurry, as is the exported media. I'm not sure what's causing this, can someone help?
    Thanks in advance.
    B

I set the Playback to High Quality and that didn't help. Thanks for the tip! I'll continue to dig into this problem. What's odd is that my first few projects with learning how to use FCP I used GoPro output and I never saw this issue, but that is HD output.
    Thanks,

  • Choppy Videos and poor playback quality

I have a problem with the TV shows im trying to play in itunes. The audio runs at the correct speed and sounds fine, but the video is choppy and wont sync with the audio that is playing at the correct. I thought the problem was with my computer but i recently restored my computer to the original factory settings with Vista. I Tunes is the only program that is giving me trouble with my video playback. Any Advise?

DFW, does your computer meet the minimum specifications for playing videos in iTunes (as given on the iTunes download page)?
2.0 GHz Pentium class processor or better
    512MB RAM
    32MB video RAM
If it does, take a look here and see if any of the tips help:
Troubleshooting iTunes for Windows Vista video playback performance issues
    Good luck.
