On my MacBook Pro, why sometime it sees my "azerty" keyboard as a "qwerty" keyboard?
I am french, and i have a trouble with my keyboard.
My MacBook Pro has an"AZERTY" Keyboard. For some apps or online games my keyboard is recognized as an "QWERTY" keyboard.
But the games or apps want me to play on an "AZERTY" keyboard.
I think i checked everything :
- Préférence système > Clavier > Méthodes de saisie
- Préférence système > Langues et régions
It is so annoying.
So please, help me out Thanks a lot.tomfromFL wrote:

Lemme hear you during the game tonight. -
My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)? It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hHA4DDEvZA
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Lower+Case+Replacement/537
If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem. -
Macbook Pro just started running insanely slow
Hello there,
From my research I can't figure out why my mac all of a sudden started running so slow. I've looked at the CPU, memory, startup and a lot of other suggestions I read here and am at a lost.
I bought a external back up drive and it was going very slow too, I forgot to keep my machine plugged in overnight and it turned off so the backup didn't complete.
Do I just restart the external backup turning the Time Machine on?
I did a test on EtreCheck and I only saw one thing that I think could be a problem but I really have no clue here.
That was this:

If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
Start with visits to: OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
See these Apple articles:
Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the View menu. Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file. -
I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro which has been running slow for a while. After looking at responses to similar problems I have downloaded and run EtreCheck. Please can someone help me with what it all means.

I am new to the forum, I hope this is the good topic to post my problem.
I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, and it is getting slower and slower. The performance was bad with Mavericks as well, but now, with Yosemite installed, it is much more worse. I have never reinstalled my system (only upgraded the osx), so it is an almost 3 years old setup. In that time I have installed a lot of applications, and also deleted a lot. About a year ago I upgraded the RAM, but didn't help too much. Now with Yosemite my startup time is more than 5 minutes, and sometimes the startup freezes (and I have to push the power button long to retry). Safari with 5-10 tabs is extreme slow, and lagging when I switch tabs or open new ones. To launch a new app, for example skype, i have to wait 1-2 minutes. Everything is slow. Sometimes my finder crashes, and works only if I restart the macbook. Another example: if I open the downloads folder in Finder, I have the spinning loading icon for about 20-30 seconds, and just after this time can I see the content of the folder.
My console is full of errors, I get new records in every single seconds. I repaired the disk permissions, deleted safari cache, history, etc. but nothing helped.
Many people here attached an "etrecheck" record for their threads, I downloaded the app, and made one scan, you can see my results here, I hope someone with more technical skills can help me!
Thank you in advance!
(and sorry for my english - it is not my mother language)

Dec 11, 2014, 12:04:08 PM Self test - passed1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

Macbook Pro (mid 2012) Running progressively slower
I am having issues with the upgrade. I installed Yosemite when it first came out. I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2012) with 8 GB of memory and 219 GB free of my 750 GB hard drive. Since the install some processes have started to become slower and slower. Startup time can take up to a few minutes to complete, Safari runs into the spinning ball numerous times through out the day, some programs will randomly freeze completely, and I have had to do a full reset a few times when trying to wake the laptop from sleep when I walk away from my desk. I posted this on another's thread but felt it would be better to start my own. Please help.
I ran EtreCheck and go the following results.
Problem description:
Macbook Pro (mid 2012) running very slow. Start up takes minutes, safari getting rainbow ball, and sometimes freezes when waking from sleep.

Macbook Core 2 Duo keyboard connector
I have a bad macbook Core 2 Duo keyboard cable ribbon. Does anyone have some extras for sale or know where I can buy some? I don't want to buy the whole keyboard.
*"Anyone that works at a certified apple repair or non-certified center can get this cable ribbon. "*
Well then it seems like you already know where to get one, so why are you asking here when you already know you can call a service center? -
Why my mac is os x 10.8.3 booting and login very slow
i'm useing MBP15 mid 2012 (core-i7, 8gb ram, os x10.8.3) i bought this pc about a month ago. when i first boot it, it was like lighting first but now after 1 month it takes 1min+ to bootup and login why my mac is getting slower plz help me to solve this problem
Once in a while my Macbook Pro and Macbook Air sometimes experience a slow boot time and slow in performance.
I've done the following and it seems to work for me - give it a shot.
First I would open disk utility and verify disk permissions - if errors are found - i would repair it then restart my Macbook.
If no errors are found - then I go to system preferences - start up disk and select my drive as the start up drive and restart it - this would speed up your boot up process.
Also performing a SMC RESET does restore the performance of your Macbook Pro - you can read about what SMC RESET does for your Macbook when you do perform one.
Good luck - hope you get it sorted out. -
Macbook Air (OS Lion) with very slow start up
Hi all,
I do not know why but my Macbook Air with OS Lion is taking to long to start up and this problem started without any reason.
The Software if updated.
I surfed on internet trying to find a solution, I experimented several potencial solutions but till now I could not solve the problem.
It is very quick shutingdown but it takes arround 30 min. to start up.
Thank you very much for your helpHi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
thanks for your responce -
My MacBook Pro is running ohh so slow. Can anyone help me please?

Macbook Pro 2011 loud fans and slow computer functioning?
Today my Macbook has suddenly begun to act slow and the fans are running quite loud. I read online that I should try checking the activity moniter, and I did this, and a program is currently taking a large portion of my CPU. However, I am unable to quit it and I'm sure it is the problem. In one of the description fields it is lableled "root" and says "kernel_task". Someone please help me out!
Actually I'm still running snow leopard. But this problem is confusing me so badly. I have tried several times to totally restart the computer by holding down the power button for a few seconds. The MacBook restarts fine but upon startup the fans start running loud again and the Performance of the computer is clearly slower than normal. For example, when I maneuver with the trackpad down to the dock the icons are very slow to respond. Also, normally upon startup my keyboard illuminates upon viewing the log in screen, however for some reason this is not happening either.
I hope someone on here has the solution to this it would be greatly appreciated. -

I did notice that Firefox was taking up a lot of RAM. Is it possible it has a lot of tabs open?
Firefox is also showing 10% CPU. Often when people post EtreCheck output, their systems are idle, so having Firefox report 10% might be an indication one of the tabs or extensions is running a little wild. Remember, may web pages have Javascript in them, and if on of those Javascripts is in a loop doing nothing, or accessing the net, it can affect your performance.
You do have a lot of internet plug-ins, is it possible that some of them are going wild and consuming lots of RAM and maybe CPU time?
Besides myself, my husband also has his own account, and he's not tech savvy. He knows not to download anything without asking me first, and won't do anything else that he doesn't understand. So I suppose that's another question...do I need to do something on his separate account to make things better?
Does he logoff when you login, and do you logoff when he's logged in? Or do you use "Fast User Switching" which allows both your accounts to be active at the same time, even if only one of your desktops is displayed on the screen? Something in one of his Firefox tabs could be affecting your performance if you are using Fast User Switching.
I'm not saying you should not use Fast User Switching, however, since you only have 4GB (yes, I know, that is a heck of a lot more than the first 16K computer I owned, nor the first 4K PDP-8 I worked with in School; but today, 4GB is a low end system, and if you are going to use Fast User Switching, more RAM, like 16GB or better of RAM, would be helpful in a Mavericks system).
This is a refurb that I purchased from Apple, and if I remember correctly it came with Maverick, or was updated shortly after I purchased it. When I purchased the computer, after backing up the old one, I just did a transfer of everything from the old one to the new one. There were two cleaners that I've since deleted, but I'm sorry I can't remember what they were.
Reburbs are good equipment. We have owned several, and I have a refurbed Mac mini running as a home server right now.
I have backed up the computer, because I know not to make any changes without doing that.
Your early years of tech support are keeping you smart
The only other thing I can think of is that we live in BFE and sometimes it's hard to get a connection, it goes through the phone line. If there's a weather change, I have to restart the router, etc.
That would affect network access. If you know any network related activity is related to your network connection, and what you are reporting in this post is not network related, then I think you can discount that (even if I do not know where BFE is located, although what little of your profile is shared, says Ohio; then again Google says it is a term used in Ohio to say you are out in the middle of no where )
It seems to me there is an awful lot of bad information out there about how to fix problems or increase speed. Is this the best place to come for information? Are there any books I could buy to help me solve these problems?
It think these forums are useful, but they have fellow Mac users answering questions. No one from Apple. Although there are some people with lots of years of computer experience. Then again, there is a lot of guessing about what is going on, since no one here is in a position to actually touch your system and look at everything they might like (and you would not want them to either ).
(Not pertinent to the problem just some info on my background...feel free to ignore) Eons ago when we were excited to go from a 10 MB to 20 MB hard drive, I was rebuilding and programming 8088s, then I'd say a couple years after that, I became tech support for a large company. Buying a Mac has made me feel stupid. This my third one (it was originally suggested to me by two people who worked for IBM). I love them now, but I just can't get past wishing there was a dot prompt where I could solve problems on my own.
No, there is a $ prompt, but it will not solve all your problems (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal has the $ prompt). And many of the people here go back to the days of 10MB disks, or even before that to punched paper tape and 80 column punched cards.
You have the basic skills from your youth, you just have to spend the time refreshing them if you want to do more. And your tech support experience will help you with general problem solving, which has not changed a lot. It is just the problems to be solved that have changed.
If you have the time, and the desire, lurking in these forums can teach you a lot. Listening to some Mac related podcasts can be useful as well (just do not buy everything you hear about, or you will go broke - Mac Geek Gab is a good Mac trouble shooting podcast. -
Macbook Pro 2010 running mavericks = impossibly slow
Ever since I downloaded Mavericks on my Macbook Pro 2010, everything is impossibly slow if I have a few applications opened at once, which never used to be a problem. Any advice would be much appreciated. I ran an Etrecheck, here are the results below.
