Why is my available SSD space so low on a new install?

I am building a new system for premiere 5.5.  For my OS drive I chose the new Intel 520 120GB SSD.  After doing a fresh install I noticed my available space on this drive was around 50GB (I can't remember exactly how many GB. I'm away and unable to check right now). This is before anything at all was installed on the drive.  Not even drivers.  I was perplexed at first, but the light bulb went off today. Is this because I have a huge pagefile?  I installed 32GB of RAM.  I just looked it up. The default is to create a pagefile that is 1.5 times the RAM. Wowsers! So I've got 45GB of space dedicated to the pagefile?1? I suppose if I installed the full 64GB of RAM on the board I wouldn't have room to install any applications. So did I figure this out?  If so, how do you guys deal with this?  Do you move the pagefile to another drive? Or, install a second drive for applications. Or, RAID 0 the OS drive?
FYI, I haven't purchased my other drives yet.  I'm going to get this system up and running stable before I move on to that step. However, I would like to know your thoughts about using multiple Intel 520 SSDs in RAID O vs using HDDs.  In the past I think the advise has been that the current SSD do not have the "sustained write" performance that HDDs have. Perhaps I don't know how to properly read the benchmarks in the reviews, but this Intel 520 appears to have superior sustained write performance over HDDs. I'm probably looking at the wrong benchmarks. What benchmark utility or reviews demonstrates that HDDs (in RAID 0/5) offer superior video editing performance over a Intel SSDs (in RAID 5/0)?
Thanks guys!

Thanks Bill. Your response was very helpful. I got 20gb of space back with your tip. I was previously aware that hibernate took lots of disk space, but I only had it turned off under the windows power management settings (which did not give me my SSD space back). Thanks again!
Also, I checked my pagefile size when I got home. It's 32GB. Looks like I need to finish my build and get that moved to a larger drive.
I'd still like to hear more thoughts on my Intel 520 vs HDD comment/question in my first post. Here is what I am currently thinking for my disk setup:
C: single Intel 520 SSD 120GB for OS/Programs
D: x2 Intel 520 SSDs in RAID 0 for Pagefile, Scratch, Temp
E: x4 WD Caviar Black 1gb in RAID 0 for Media/Project/Export
Do you guys think this would give me a balanced system?

  • "Available disk space running low.  Shuttting down session."

I've been running into problems on a few machines that I have installed e-Load on. When I start the stress test, I get into a few iterations and then suddenly, the test will stop running and I get the following message:
"Available disk space running low. Shutting down session."
    Questions:
1.) What space is it referring to? The local machine or where the scripts are stored?
I can't seem to figure it out. The machines have more than enough space where e-Load is installed, over 10 Gigs free.
The scripts (repository) is on a shared network drive and that has 17 GB where the results are written to. Is there something I am missing?

  • Available HDD space is 40MB only - brand new Air

    Hi
I just got my Air today (80G HDD model) and I found that finder says that space available is only 40M. (not G, but M) When I try software update, the Finder says I need to delete some files...
With activity monitor, they say the used portion is only for 15G but only 40M is available.
With Disk Utility it says 58.2G is available out of 74.2GB.
Is there any one who encountered this similar issue?

    Dear tele_player,
Thanks for your suggestion. The result is the same - WhatSize also thinks whole disk space is only 15G and space is 8M (decreased from 40M as I donwloaded WhatSize) so consistent with what Finder says.
No new finding, no new solution unfortunately.
And what happened was after downloading WhatSize, I tried to reboot, then it keeps on trying to boot up but never reach to Finder, but do self-restart over and over and over again. I needed to force sht down after all. Safeboot does not work either.
So I would not recommend anyone to download anything into this small 40M available space...
I guess I need to run to Apple Store...

  • Why does time machine make a second/different backup after new installing a hard drive?

    Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster...
after having to install a new hard drive on my MacBook Pro, the new Time Machine backups are not recognising the original/older backups on the external hard drive connected via network router and has created a new/second backup caller 'xxx Mac Book Pro 1' instead of updating/reading the orginal 'xxx Mac Book Pro backup'?
Does anyone know why it did this? and more importantly how do i make it recgonise the original and stop making the secondary copy?
    Thanks!

  • Hyper-V: Why difference between "Free Disk Space" and "Inspect Disk" for a VM (Guest OS is Windows 2008, 2008 R2, 2010, 2010 R2)

I am trying to figure out the "Free Disk Space" on a VM on Hyper-V host.
When I see the available space inside the VM, shown by Microsoft OS, it is less than, what is reported by the ‘Inspect Disk’ utility of Hyper-V Manager.
    Why this difference?

    Hi,
Is it the exactly 10% free space when the issue occurs? Please run a chkdsk in CMD on that partition and see the size of available space matches the 10% - I'm thinking if it is actually full when a part of disk space is not calculated.
In my test I created a 9.87GB partition and keep copy a 1GB file on it. Now it only has about 130MB free space but I can still add txt file with small size onto it. So what's the exact message you got?
If it is a warning (but users can still add files onto it), please see if this will help:

  • [Solved] Pacman mounts partition on checking available disc space

Hi, hope this is the right subforum.
First, pacman doesn't directly mount any partition. My partition, located at /dev/sdb1, is automounted if somenone request access to /media/datengrab. Fstab-entry looks like this:
    /dev/sdb1 /media/datengrab ext4 noauto,noexec,x-systemd.automount 0 2
The funny thing is, every time pacman checks the available disc space, this partition is mounted. The question is: why? Software is never installed under /media, so accessing /media is not needed. Maybe this is a bug? (Or, better question: How can pacman avoid to access /media?)
Hope someone can help or explain why pacman is accessing /media.
    Thanks in advance

Because the diskspace checking behavior in 4.0.x is quite naive. I fixed this a while ago so that only the mount points being written to will be actually checked. Stay tuned for pacman 4.1.

  • Available disk space.

    Hello Guys,
I would like to ask that do any of you know a way to find the available disk space left to be used by the data files in the database. Scenario is that what would happen if the available disk space on the server is very less or let's say its 1% free and this time the datafile needs some space to expand (automatically). It will give an error and the process is screwed up. Solution 1. Monitoring on the OS level, but what if the OS level solution fails to warn the administrator? Can we detect this via the database?
We are using Oracle 9i RAC on HP-UX, i can do this on HP-UX but i would like to know if there is a way to find this in Oracle Database?
    Thanks in advance,
    Cheers!!

OEM can be one option which can generate alerts if the disk is about to full other than that I there is no database view which can tell you the details of disk space, from database you can query OS like using host in sqlplus and then parse the result but I dont know why any1 want to do that because you can do this better with some shell or perl script.
    Thanks

  • RMBP doesn't show correct 'available HDD space'

    Hi,
I'm using rMBP 15" early 2013 with OSX 10.9.5. My problem is (for a while) OSX doesn't show correctly my available HDD space. It is internal 256 GB SSD. How can i know that it doesn't show correctly? Because my Disk Utility says 69.64 GB free space but my Finder says 92.14 GB (Huge difference) ! Also my PC partition tells about different story but i don't care it (Who cares silly billy Windows? ) My guess is Disk Utility says correct.
This problem started with Diablo III. I installed it (13 GB download for a patch !!! c'mon Blizzard) and after that my Finder starts to lie to me (Before installation, both Disk utility and Finder says 101 GB approx.
    Any idea?
p.s : İ did several times Repair disk permissions and repair disk. Please don't advise it..
    Thanks

  • Available disc space is incorrect

I think something is wrong with my MBP (2011, Mac OSX 10.7.5).
It seems to be working ok but I think the available disc space is incorrect.
In the Finder it says '233,65 gb available', in Disk Utility and About This Mac it says '77,47 GB available'. There's no way that I have 233 GB available space because my harddisk (320 GB) is filled with pictures and audio. Why is the Finder saying this? Does this have something to do with the local backups (77+156=233)?
I did not erase any large files, nor did I disable the local backups in the terminal. Can anyone tell me if something is wrong with my harddisk? I rebooted but the number is still the same.

Thanks for your input, Ogelthorpe. I appreciate it!
I do believe though that it has something to do with the local backups. The local backups are 125 GB now, the available disc space according to 'about this mac' has gone up to 107 GB, and finder window says the available disc space is now 232 GB (and again: 125 + 107 = 232).
Today I did not move any files or delete any files, in fact, I did not use my Mac for about 8 hours. So how did the available disc space go up from 77 GB (last night) to 125 GB when I did not delete / change anything?
It might have something to do with the fact that a few days ago I downloaded about 50 GB's, I copied it to an external harddrive and deleted the files from my Mac then. Perhaps 'versions' of those files (about 1,2 GB each) still exist in the local backups.
Although I'm still intrigued by how everything works I decided to l let it go and stop worrying about it. Thanks again.

  • HELP! My MacBook Air sucked dry 142.5GB out of 256GB SSD space!!!

I use DaisyDisk and found out that I've lost 142.5GB out of 256GB SSD space being hidden as displayed in the attach captured image.
Can someone tell me how you resolve this issue and retrieve back the hidden disc space? Why are they hidden and used up so much of space? I do Time Machine backup every night I get back home. It never happen to my MacBook Pro... Pls help!...

Well, I went into the Disk Utility and veryfy the drive and the error messages appeared as per the attach captured image below:
I then restart the computer and hold down "Command+R" till the "Apple Logo" appears and releases the keys.
I selected the bottom most option (Disk Repair) and selected the volume and clicked "Repair Disk". Within 5 mins, the (green color) message reads "Your disk repaired successfully" and I gain back all my lost/hidden spaces to what I should be getting...

    Hi.
I am having a strange problem with my SCCM 2012 R2 installation running on Windows Server 2008 R2.
I am not able to add any new roles to the server.
Event log reports: "Product: Application Web Service -- There is not enough available disk space on  to complete this operation. Installation requires at least 10MB free disk space."

I have three disks in the server.
C: (OS) ~8.7 GB free space
D: (SCCM) ~7.69 GB free space
E: (data) ~52.4 GB free space
I have NO_SMS_ON_DRIVE.SMS files on C: and D:. I tried removing it from D: and restarting the server without any effect.
Does anyone have a solution to this?

  • How to monitor available disk space in archive directory

I need to monitor the available disk space of the archive directory during a long running PL/SQL program which does a lot of inserts and updates. This program is running in a background session and should regularly check for the available space. If there is less then a customizable number of MBs free the program must terminate itself. How can I access this information from the file system? (I'm using 8.1.6 and the application will run on both AIX and NT)

The directory itself is not taking space (It actually does but in most cases you can neglect its size). It is files that it has that take space. Also, the more files you create the more space gets allocates from the media that holds them. And the last, the media (Hard Drive, Floppy, or other) has free space, not directory. That is how all OS's that I know about work.

  • Why are my slideshow images showing as low res?

I'm creating a site that will show a housing development in the works, and with each lot number that's clicked on the home page, the link goes to a page with a slideshow (My Albums) and when that is clicked you're taken to a new page with separate slideshow.
    I've got two questions:
    1. Why do the images show up as low res on the My Albums page, but are the preferred higher res on the slideshow page?
    2. I'd like to just have a slideshow on the first page without having to click on the image to link to a whole other page for the slideshow. The confusing part is, while working in iWeb, the slideshow does exactly what I'd like it to do, but when published I get the ghastly low res images and I have to click on that to get to the "real" slideshow! Is there a setting I'm missing?

What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand? Do you have iWeb's preferences set to optimize images when imported?
To get rid of the album page and leave the photo pages just move the photo pages out of the album page.

  • Finder is not correctly reporting available disk space

finder is not correctly reporting available disk space
my drive is 50% full but finder shows there is only @ 35% left
the difference is more than anything needed by the system
any ideas on what is causing the problem?

    Try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
