Why is the Finder so BAD in copying files....

Hi,
I regularly manage a fairly large network... With 5 users and a total of 25 hard drives... This is proving to be a real pain in the neck.
OS X - the self proclaimed "Most Advanced Operative System On The Planet" cant handle the load... Or better yet - it's Finder (The main files manager in OS X) cant cope with the situation...
This is what I am experiencing EVERY time when copying large sessions of files back and forth...
1) Finder could NOT complete operation as some files could NOT be read/written....
Then I locate the file which the finder supposedly had a problem with and copy only THAT particular file... And guess what - Perfectly OK...
The problem with this scenario is that if it happens when copying a chunk of 100GB and the problem occur at GB 40 - then the finder cancels the WHOLE process. And one can start ALL OVER - or manually go and check where the finder BLEW IT.... This is - 100% AMATEUR NIGHT.
2) OS X and it's permission confusion.
It seems that OS X gets confused - A WHOLE LOT - about it's permissions.... I repair those EVERY DAY.
Anyway - One example: copying a 4 folder separately from a network user to the back up drive. (All four folders have SAME permissions and so does it's contents.) This happens - folder two forces the Finder to render an alert that it could not copy as the I did not have the right file permissions... And for those scanning thru' this post vastly - They ALL had SAME permission SET.
This is hilarious....
Anyway - I also manage a larger PC network at my girlfriends Advertising Agency - here we're talking 'bout a network 10 times bigger than the one I am having trouble with... Guess what - NO PROBLEMS
What is with Mac and networking that JUST DONT WORK?
They have set up networking under OS X to LOOK very easy - but it is 95% NOT RELIABLE. OS X or the Finder doesn't correctly update the active network servers in the "browse network" in the finder window... And accidentally clicking on one that is no longer there makes the finder freeze for at least ten minutes before finally getting it's act together and reports: The server could not be found. This is ridiculous.
If anyone has any tips to what I could do to make the finder do what it's supposed to - please dont hesitate to write...
I dont need :
1) Standard Q's to whether I have set the permissions right or repaired those - I know how to set permissions
2) I know how to initialize a Hard drive - so I dont need those standard copy and paste guys pasting this post full of what I already know---
I dont mean to sound harsh but very HARD to get qualified answers here that are about NOVICE.... So please be so nice and gentle to NOT reply to this post with novice answers....
Thanks -

I understand the problem. Here are some ideas:
1) Permission repair only affects files in the system, userfiles are ignored.
2) For large file transfer, you must be hardwired. Wi-Fi is insufficient for transferring large files.
3) When copying Mac files to a Windows filesystem, illegal characters in a filename will cause the operation to stop without any informational error message. In any case, copying large files to a Windows machine is not very reliable. I recommend Mac-formatted network storage.
4) When attempting to mount a nonexistent network disk, Finder stalls with a 5 minute timeout. The solution is to add a "Quit Finder" menu item to the Finder icon in the Dock.
5) If the machine uses a dynamic localnet address, Finder is unable to locate an aliased network disk that has changed. You need to mount the disk with the "Connect to Server" dialog first to fix the aliase(s). A DNS setup may help to locate machines by hostname rather than IP address.
6) Switches are problematic. If you are using switches rather than routers you may be seeing congestion on machines connected to the switch.
7) I highly recommend rsync triggered by a cronjob running in the wee hours of the morning. rsync is robust and persistent in file copying.

  • Why is the  finder copying before burning?

I was just preparing my first dvd backup using the finder to burn the dvd and I was surprised that as I dragged items to the dvd disc to prepare for burning, it seemed to be actually copying these items to some location before I could burn the dvd. I could hear my hard disk copying the files and the process took about 8 minutes to copy over the 3.88 GB of files.
Shouldn't the files simply be burned to the dvd from their current hard disk locations onto the dvd?
For example, when I burn a cd from iTunes it doesn't need to copy the files to some other location first.
So my question is why is the finder doing all of this copying before it burns the disc?
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Panther creates a hidden disk image file, copies all the files to it, burns, verifies, then deletes the hidden disk image file. This is a reliable way to do it. There is no danger of the burn files changing during the burn, or verify, and since it is just burning one big file, there is less disk head movement, so less chance of not keeping up with the optical drive. With larger and faster, optical drives, though, it added an unacceptable amount of time to the burning process, and required a lot of free space on the system disk. Tiger uses burn folders that just contain aliases of the files to burn, and burns the data directly from the original files. It is a lot faster but you do have to be careful not to burn file that may change, such as log or preference files. Newer optical drives have underrun protection, so burning scattered files does not cause a problem. The drive will just slow down if the computer can't feed the data fat enough.

  • WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization?

WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files and/or documents in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization? Even after I numbered the documents/folders to keep them in my preferred order, it will still displace them occasionally. This is becoming increasingly frustrating!
Is this a "Pages" issue or "FInder"? The vast majority of documents I use are in Pages, but there are also Numbers, PDFs, jpegs and a few other applications involved. This never happened before I upgraded to Mountain Lion; in Tiger, the documents (mostly Appleworks) and files stayed where I wanted them to be.
I am visually oriented, and prefer to arrange items in a folder in an order that makes them easier for me to access, which is often NOT alphabetical.
Can anyone suggest a solution? Please??
    Thank you.

    nbar,
    Thank you for your reply.
However, I do not understand what you mean by "user account." I am the only user, and can find no options for "user" or "guest." The parental controls have always been off, as there are no other people who have access to my computer.
    Frank,
    Thank you for your reply.
All my documents, files and folders are in icon view, Arranged By: none in both view and view options. This arbitrary rearranging does not happen all the time, only when I make a substantial change to one of the documents in the file or folder. I'm not sure what you mean by "column heading."
    MichaelLAX,
    Thank you for your reply.
I know, to my sorrow, that Appleworks does not work with Mountain Lion. I spent at least three months converting approximately 2,000 Appleworks documents to Pages, Numbers, Bento (for databases) and Touchdraw (for drawings). So this is not the problem; but as I said, I did not have this rearranging problem with Appleworks - the icons stayed where I wanted them to be. I still miss the ease and reliability of Appleworks, darn it!
    Frank,
Thank you for your second reply.
I do have the Sort By: in view options as well as in view set to "none."   The finder still insists on rearranging, but only when I have made a substantial change to a document in that file or folder.
    Any futher thoughts?
    xdab,
    Thank you for your reply.
"Are you are using icon view, but for some reason the finder moves files around? is that the problem?"
YES!! This is exactly the problem.
"If this operation is successful then erase the original and rename the new one to the name originally chosen by the user."
This seems like a lot of trouble, especially as I often work on several documents at the same time.
"By the way, the finder has a "clean up by" menu that rearranges icons in one of the standard orders, there are shortcuts that produce the same effect, for example <option><cmd>1 sorts them by name. Is it possible that this shortcut was typed by mistake without you noticing?"
I do know about this "clean up by" option, and avoid it like the plague! So I doubt this is the issue, and I infrequently use keyboard shortcuts like this anyway.
Thanks all who replied. None of the suggestions seem to work, however. Any others out there?
    Regards,
    Sara

  • Why is the iPhone so BAD at connecting back to mobile networks?

Reading various threads it would seem that Apple gave up sometime ago making a device that actually works well at mobile connectivity. Their antennae technology must be as out of date as their map data or as poorly tested.
Quite often I come out of the tube or a lift and have "no service". This I accept but it seems to take a lifetime for the phone to realise a signal is available. It could be down to mobile mast registration so is really a network issue but a 4 year old bog standard Nokia phone seems to cope ok getting a signal at places an iPhone can only dream of and shows the fact that it has a signal in a heart beat.
A fix I have found is to make a call. If no signal is available then rightly this will not work but if the iPhone is just being as intelligent as a household brick this seems to do the trick triggering mobile mast registration or the phone to wake up and hey presto i have 3 bars of connectivity increasing to 5 as i get more into the open. However, this does not seem to work just by triggering a data request, you just get the "no Internet" available warning.
So either calls register the device quicker which would make some sense as they can use GSM or the device always tries to make a call triggering a search but if no service is recorded never tries to search so it can send data.
Regardless of which, why is the phone so BAD at detecting and registering with networks after all this is the raison d'être of a mobile device.
Do we ever think the Apple will stop for a moment adding meaningly upgrades and examine this boring but fundamental requirement?

  • Why is the support so bad and expensive?

Putting in my serial number of a product that is now useless tells me I'm not covered by the support so I have to pay £25 to have someone call me.
When I put in all my details so I can phone Apple myself I then get given a premium rate number to phone and when I get through I start getting asked the same questiuons I answered online ( to get my case number ) so the call is going to end up costing more than it should. The case number is supposed to make the call quicker.
Why is help so expensive here?
Why can't I just email support?

John Galt, the poster already did that as he said in this discussion. He said:
I'm sure with the millions of dollars Apple make every day they can pay staff for support. Instead of that they create a forum where people can do their work for them for free.
I've posted details about my problem herehttps://discussions.apple.com/message/25581520#25581520

Thanks for sharing, but you are not addressing Apple here. This is a user-to-user forum.

I'm having problems uploading video taken with my iPhone 4 to Photobucket.  FB will not accept the file extension which is ex. IMG_423.  They will play on my computer and will upload to Facebook.  Why is the phone taking video with this file instead of something like .mov or mp4.  How can I change the extension after the fact and avoid it in the future?

You said, "the 4 also has signal and wifi whereas the 5 has only wifi". By "signal", I'm assuing that you mean cellular signal. If so, that means your iPhone 4 is still active on your cellular number and your iPhone 5 is not. Contact your carrier to sort out which phone is active on your account.

  • Why would the finder require my password when I trash a file?

Every time I attempt to drag a file or folder (or use the keyboard shortcut) to the trash I receive the notification 'the finder is trying to make changes' and asked for my password.
Once I enter the password the file or folder disappears and the empty trash sound is played.  The trash itself remains empty.
I've repaired disk permissions in the hope it would fix the problem but it doesn't.
Why is this happening and how can I make it stop?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Paul.

    1. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/.Trash
    2. Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Show Info
from the contextual menu.* An Info dialog should open.
    3. The dialog should show "You can read and write" in the Sharing & Permissions section. If that's not what it shows, click the padlock icon in the lower right corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Use the plus- and minus-sign buttons to give yourself Read & Write access and "everyone" No Access. Delete any other entries in the access list.
    4. In the General section, uncheck the box marked Locked if it's checked.
    5. From the action menu (gear icon) at the bottom of the dialog, select Apply to enclosed items and confirm.
    6. Close the Info window and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Why is the Find command in Notes always disabled?

I would like to be able to locate text inside of notes in the Mac OS X version of Notes. The Find, Find Next, Find Previous, and Find Selected Text commands all exist in the Edit>Find sub-menu but they're always disabled. Is there something wrong with my installation of Mountain Lion or are these commands always disabled? How can I enable these Find commands in Notes?

Entering text in the search sidebar filters the notes containing the text entered in the box, but it does not enable the Find commands nor highlight the text within the note. If you want to find the desired text within a very long note —and I'm sure we all have a few— you must copy the text into another application and use that application's Find command, make your changes, then paste the text back into the note.
My question still stands. How can I enable the Find command which exists in Notes but which is always disabled? Is this simply a feature that was planned but never implemented? If the command was never intended to work in Notes, why was it included in the menu? Finally, since the Find command is standard in every other text editor, why would it not be included in Notes?
As a Mac developer, I'm tempted to try and hack it into working, but I'd rather not have to.

  • Why is the finder so slow to update?

Why is my finder so slow to update. For example, if I download a file (using Safari), I can't find it on the desktop. If I use Find at the Finder level, it says it's there, but I can't see it.
Same thing happens with Mail, trying to attach a PDF I just made. Mail can't see it.
I love all the wondrous glitz of OSX, but wouldn't it be nice if it could do the basic stuff as well as System 6? At the rate Apple's going, we'll probably get a breathless announcement about a spanking-new OS called Snail, which doesn't do anything but look pretty.

    Stu,
Did you ever get an answer to this? My finder is pathetically slow to update, a minor irritation a dozen times a day. System 9 never had this problem. Is there a way to get my expensive computer to do this simple task? Is there any news on this?

  • Why does the Finder "undo" my icon improvements?

    I have the following problem:
I use CocoThumbX or GraphicConverter to create large-size Finder icons for JPEG files. In the Finder, the icon changes for just a second or two to what I want. Right after that, the icon reverts to its formerly blurry appearance.
Clearly, something in the Finder settings is doing this, but I can't figure out what it is. Any ideas?

First of all, the shuffle will never show a steady green light as long as it's mounted by the finder. That's how you not only know it's charged, but safe to remove. Which is why I posted the question.
We're at cross-purposes here... EJECTing the shuffle will still allow it to
charge NORMALLY (eg to green). However, I didn't know abou the rest of your
    requirement
Secondly, my seven year old son only has access to the dock. My user is always locked, so he CAN'T just right click on things in the finder.
I want him to be able to put the shuffle on the dock, let it charge, and then take it off without ever interfacing with the computer. Ever.
This problem must be a 10.5.2 thing, BUT isolating your son from your computer can also be accomplished by buying an iPod USB Power Adaptor (see store.apple.com ) which allows charging without a computer.

  • Why is the finder so slow?

Ever since I upgraded to Mavericks, the Finder gets very slow to display folders and files, especially in a save window. Any idea why?

I have this problem too. The popup finder window when saving files, is really slow. Scrolling is behaving weird too.
I tried to delete the finder plist, and restarted finder with the terminal command:
    killall -KILL Finder

  • Where is a mailbox "on my mac" in the finder so I can copy

Running OS 10.6.8 with Mail program on a Mac Mini.  On that computer we have a mailbox "On My Mac" in the mail program with old emails going back to 2007, which we want to move and put on a newer laptop (also running 10.6.8).
    1. Where is this folder/mailbox in the finder?  I would want to copy it to a USB thumb drive to put in the appropriate location on the newer laptop.
Any other suggestions related to my question and plan of action is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Make a new folder with a different name (xxxname2.mbox) and put it all in the new folder, keeping the same structure as you have now. I would try to just move  within it all into the new folder. Then make a new mail box in mail and drag it in there. this will be a archive type of thing. Do a back up on this first. Then you should probably create a new mailbox (different name) moving forward.
As I mentioned before, I have always had multiple mail boxes for different customers, uses,... to help organize things, but this should work, as long as the names are different.
The file is larger because (if I understand you) it contains the attachments, with the messages)
Try putting it on a USB and see that you can open it all.
Now you know where to find where your mail is.

  • Why is the finder asking for my password now in Mavericks?

Every time I want to delete a file, the Finder asks for my password to do this.
Anyone know how to I can turn this off?

What steps did you perform to install Mavericks?
It sounds like there's a permissions mismatch between your account and those files.  If you ask the Finder to do a "get info" (File > Get Info), what do you see in the "Sharing & Permissions" section?  Compare that will a file you just created.
There's a way to reset the permissions of your files while in "recovery mode" (boot with command-R held down), but I can't give you details.

like, all fuzzed and blocky around the text big time
is this normal? what am i doing wrong?

hi, as far as i know i'm setting the codec to "dv"
I assume that dv is a codec :S i know what a codec is but i haven't dealt with dv very much so i don't quite understand what it really is, apart from being uncompressed video. i would normally assume that "uncompressed" means its the highest quality thats possible.
i've fiddled with MP4, sorenson and a few others and to no avail. i've been viewing the movies in iMovie and in QT7. do i have to set settings in QT player?
the movies look like severely compressed files when played.
