Why is the Instrument Library invalid?

Hi-
Had problems with my hard drive and I managed to loose GarageBand. I was able to get the GarageBand 3 program (102.7 MB) and the Instrument file (1.52 GB) from a friend. Placed the GarageBand program into the Applications folder, and the Instrument Library in the Library/Application Support/ GarageBand file. When I try to launch the program, it still says I need to place a valid Instrument Library in the Library/Applicaion Support/ GarageBand file or load another GarageBand program. I thought that is exactly what I did??!!?? What do I have to do to get this thing to work?

The problem is I have the install discs for the original OS that came with the computer. Then, I have the Tiger OS and I've updated to 10.4.10 since that. When I run the old OS discs, it doesn't give me a choice to custom install GarageBand, and I don't want to put my new software into another file and install an old OS completely just to find GarageBand. What are my choices?

Thanks very much. Yes, I am using the installer files and serial number from the URL you referenced above. I have spent many hours trying to get it to work. I would love some help!!
The problem is that the instructions that come in the pdf with the downloaded files do not work, because the files that download from that page do not have the names referred to in the pdf, and most of the things that are referred to in the instructions do not happen. Here is what actually happened.
When I downloaded the files from the website, these are the files that downloaded:
I double-clicked each one and they extracted into two different folders.
Then I read a message on the forum that said to move all the extractred files into the same folder, so I moved all files into one file at C:\Creative Suite CS2\Adobe Creative Suite 2.0 as was pictured in the forum message. Here are screen shots showing all of the files in that folder I have now:
So then I double clicked the "Setup" file and I got this error message:
So then I tried to install the programs separately from the installer inside the folders Photoshop and Illustrator. I got this far and entered the serial number from the website:
But then I got this error message, even though I was using the files and serial number exactly from the website:
I tried both photoshop and illustrator and the same thing happened.
(I also looked at Solution 2 that you mentioned above but I don't have anything called VCOM on the computer. Also the error message that I got is not that one.)
I think I really need a set of instructions that lists the steps in order to do, but based on the files that actually download from the website and what happens when you extract the files. I feel as if I have all of the proper files but it still doesn't work.

I cancelled the option in settings that it copies the files to the Library but the LIbrary file grows and grows when I import new photos?

You have disabled "Copy items to the iPhoto Library"?
Then the original image files should not be imported; you can check this by selecting one of the recently imported photos and using the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original File". Does it show you a file outside the library?
Your library will grow in size, when you import and edit photos, even if the originals are not included. iPhoto will store thumbnails of your photos, previews of the edited versions, of the faces, and if you sync your library with iTunes, there will also be an iPod Photo cache, that can be quite large:

You know, that disabling "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" is quite risky, don't you? Just in case you are not aware of the risks - iPhoto does provide no tools at all, if the connection between your referenced original files and your thumbnails in iPhoto gets broken. Or if you need to move your photos to a different drive, when the drive fails, as will happen one day. You will not be able to migrate the library to a new computer or restoring from your backup will be difficult. You will need third party apps like iPhoto Library Manager to recover from such a situation.
If you need to free space on your mac it is much safer to move the whole library to an external drive, or to split it and relocate the partial library with the older photos to an external drive.

Does anyone have issues with the instrument library?

I've installed iLife 08 and then added all the jam packs. Now when I open GB the default track is an accordion (not a piano) and when adding loops to the timeline they take on a different instrument sound (e.g. drum loop sounds like raindrops, etc.)
I've searched high and low for similar problems and have found nothing that resembles this, I've cleared my preferences and repaired permissions and still nothing helps, I've contemplated reinstalling but I have no guarentee that that will help and I'm reluctant to invent the 3 hours it will take to do all that if it is all for nothing...
Bottom line is...is this really an issue with the instrument library and is there any way for me to fix this without reinstalling?

Just loaded the 6.0.2 update a few days ago. I was hoping it would fix the dropping of wifi where the 4g and 3g always kept. I have restored the router and I have even switched towers through AT&T's help, but to no avail. I still am dropped and sometimes it spins and spins looking to connect and then says, Cannot connect at this time. Sometimes it connects, and when the phone goes to sleep, it disconnects and then it is heck connecting again. I am very upset for I do not have unlimited data and my data has soared over 270 mg which I usually always kept way below 200 as being in my home most of the time. I am planning to take into AT& T store for a new one, just not happy with the wifi situation. It is sad that this cannot be fixed with an update. I saw earlier that some Iphone 5 made in China were the cuprits, and maybe I got one of those. I hope At&T and Apple are reading these dialogs. Please let me know if fixes are on the way!

GB 2 Instrument Library Invalid

Hi! After reading the post and answer re:Paul Bonomo 12-23-06. I was able to get my GB 2 open. However, I had to take the Instrument Library out of my application folder and place it on the desk top. For reasons unknown when in the application folder the Instrument Library is not being recognized. Can anyone provide me with insight into this problem?

We took your advice and ran several keyword searches in the Garageband forums .. yet
were only able to discover your proposed (linked) solutions. Guess we need a few lessons in forum
searching too.
You could easily foresee our next question a mile off .. and that is .. what's next?
And now we are operating Tiger 10.4.3 .
Here's an interesting development .. at iMac start-up .. an icon flashes for
about a minute then resolves to a folder .. alternating between ? folder
and Mac face folder .. then eventually .. machine proceeds to display the
grey apple and spinning 'wheel' and then opens to business as usual ..
about a five minute procedure in total. Never seen before .. until
the attempted repair routine .. and no change since updating to Tiger 10.4.3 .
Curious about the unexpected delayed start-up routine. Investigating ...

How can I re-index the instrument library?

I've got a few instruments playing just fine in GarageBand, but only as tones in Logic. I suspect that if I re-indexed the library it might solve the problem. But for the life of me I can't remember how to index the libraries in Logic.
All instruments have been installed on the operating system hard drive. I haven't moved a single thing since installation. Only a few instruments are showing up as tones - but they DO play in GarageBand.

(It's improbable, but I think Pancenter may have misread you & thinks you are in GarageBand; but perhaps I am wrong & it is I who has misunderstood. Or, more likely, he does understand that you are in Logic, & is saying that if you were to use GarageBand then you would be using mini-EXS… although if so, you had of course said the same thing yourself, earlier on.)
Anyway: I take it you mean that you are in Logic, but are selecting sounds from the 'Garageband' sub-menu.
+"There is no obvious evidence that it is being played through the EXS."+ If you look at the Track icon in the Arrange window it will tell you that this is so, & the Channel Strip to the left will have a plug-in insert marked "EXS24". So that's how you can check. Double-clicking on that plug-in is also a quick way to open your Software Instrument of choice so that you can access all the available sounds directly (& edit them if required).

Why is The iTunes Library Extras.itdb file locked?

After my walk this morning I tried to connect up to iTunes to chargemy ipod and update my tunes and got an error message:
"The iTunes Library.itdb file is locked, on a locked disc, or you do not have write permission for this file."
WHY WHY WHY ???

I had the same problem after a "force quit".
1. Quit iTunes
2. Locate your iTunes folder in finder and open it
3. Locate the "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" file, right click it and select Copy "iTunes Library Extras.itdb"
5. Rename your original "iTunes Library Extras.itdb" to "iTunes Library ExtrasOld".itdb
6. Move the your copied "iTunes Library Extras.itdb file back into the same folder as i came from
Repeate 3>6 for the "iTunes Library Genius.itdb" file
Re-open iTunes, the error messages should now be gone.
This worked for me, anyway

Why does the iPhoto library file copy so slowly?

Every few months I back up all the important stuff on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2012, 13", 750GB) to my 3TB external hard drive.
This has worked well for as long as I can remember. I used to have a proper backup program but due to the nature of my work and files, recently I prefer to just manually copy over each individual folder in my parent home folder, so I can have control of what is replaced and what is merged, etc.
However this time backing up, I had to copy every folder and file in 'Pictures' separately. This is because after trying to copy the parent folder in one transfer it didn't seem to be working well. I noticed that around the 11.22GB mark, the transfer would always slow right down from ~35MB/s to ~0.5MB/s. As you can imagine, with a Pictures folder totalling almost 300GB, this isn't something I wanted to put up with.
In the end, I figured out what was causing the issue. I tried copying just the iPhoto library file and discovered the problem occurred again.
Why? Is this a Yosemite bug or is it to do with the way that the file is structured?
It works fine otherwise and does not seem damaged.

What version of iPhoto? Of the OS? Why do you think it is getting larger? what exactly are you doing?
Could it be downloading photos from Your PhotoStream?

Why has the total library size gone from my itunes

I downloaded the latest iTunes the other day and now the total library size is missing and the window size is actually too large for my monitor too, though I've not altered any settings.
I HATE not having the library size showing at the bottom of the page when my iTunes library is open. Anyone know what's happened?

Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library as iTunes Library (Corrupt) and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

Why does the history/library window auto-scroll away from the previous point in the library?

When in Firefox 23.0's history/library window when I am browsing it will auto-scroll to the top of "Today" page making it frustrating and difficult to browse. I do not seem to recall this being the case before. I disabled "auto-scroll" in options and this has not remedied the problem.

Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:

Bought ilife 05, invalid instrument library

Hello,
I just bought a copy of iLife '05 and used the install dvd to install it. The main reason I bought iLife 05 was for Garageband. However, when I open Garageband, it tells me the instrument library is invalid. So I click "choose", and select the folder "instrument library" in the Garageband folder, but it just keeps telling me the same thing. Can anyone help? Thank you,

Your instrument library is HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library. If the folder is there, it might be a permissions problem - try the general "oddball" fix:

Garage Band Error Message - Library Invalid

My Hard Drive burned out. I had a new one installed and all programs transfered over. Everything works but my GB. This is the message I get. Can anyone help? To the best of my knowledge GB came installed. I have OS X 10.4.10.

So, did you look in:
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/
for an "Instrument Library" folder?
Is it there?
Are there folders inside it that say:
Plug-In Settings
Sampler
Track Settings
In the Sampler folder, there should be two folders:
Sampler Files
(this one contains folders that hold the Audio samples for the Instruments)
Sampler Instruments
(this one holds the Instruments as .exs files).
