Why Verizon blocks acess to US channels outside of USA ?

Why I am unable to watch the US channels while out of USA eventhough I log into my Verizon account and pay my monthly bill ? This is completely unfair and ridiculous. Since I am still paying my bill I should be able to watch the channels anywhere in the world as long as I am logging into my account. They should be able to indentify and validate that the onwer is logging in.

One way around all this is to get a Slingbox.

• Verizon Blocking Access to Mail Servers outside the United States

I spent almost two hours with Verizon representatives yesterday after having spent 10 days in Canada without ever being able to access the pop.verizon.net email server. Although the information does not seem to be well known throughout Verizon, several officials confirmed that as of September 14, Verizon has made the decision to block all IP addresses outside the United States trying to communicate with Verizon's email servers.
Parenthetically, Verizon Wireless was also unaware of this change in policy but was most interested to learn about it given the impact it would have. It would also help explain why there were many customers who suddenly found their smartphones to be significantly less useful when traveling internationally.
I asked repeatedly whether the Verizon community had been made aware of this change in policy and several individuals within Verizon confirmed that no such corporate communication was ever made, despite the fact that this change has a dramatic impact on those who travel outside the United States. They conceded that this should have been done, but of course no one seems to know where the decision within the corporation was made about this policy and who might be "empowered" to actually consider the impact on the Verizon user community and communicate with it in a transparent manner.
I find this behavior on Verizon's part to be appalling. Even if security concerns drove this decision, I can't but help feel that it is Verizon's arrogance that led them to believe that this change in policy should not be communicated to the Verizon community.
I have made my view known to some individuals--would suggest that others do so as well--although I am skeptical that anyone within the Verizon heirarchy cares. Hopefully I'm wrong.

The response highlights the problems of dealing with Verizon. It's totally non-responsive to the issue.
In point of fact, I am not locked out of my individual account, nor do I have any difficulty in downloading emails from the pop.verizon.net email server when I am accessing it from a US-based IP address. The problem is that IP addresses outside the US are being rejected. Thus while traveling internationally and trying to access my account from a hotel, coffee shop, etc. the server is now programmed by Verizon not to respond.
Thank you.

We have asked them to clarify the message and they finally have, but not necessarily what you want to hear.
"Additionally, we have implemented measures to prevent future unauthorized access attempts which may affect your ability to access your Verizon.net email from locations outside the U.S. If you experience difficulty reaching your Verizon.net email account, you can always access it online at mail.verizon.com or through the Verizon My FiOS app for mobile devices. For further information see the Verizon Webmail FAQs. "
I think they are also still accepting whitelist requests for Foreign ISP's.

• Logging into home remotely - is Verizon blocking incoming connection requests?

I'm trying to set up my computer at home so that I can access it from my in-laws, who are also FIOS customers and from my Android device via Sprint's network. Both of these use SSH as the protocol, and on the theory that port 22 might be blocked, I set up the Actiontec to map an alternate port (1977) to port 22 on my server. My first attempt was to use the port forwarding capability in the router, but I have been unsuccessful in establishing a connection from outside my network.
I've tried configuring my server as the DMZ for the Actiontec, which makes me nervous, but I was running out of ideas. I even turned the firewall off on the PPoE connection but that didn't help either.
From outside my network, I can ping the WAN IP address assigned by Verizon to my router, so inbound ICMP packets are OK, at least as far as getting to the Actiontec
I can log onto my server while on my local network, but not from outside the network.
I'm running out of ideas. Does anyone know of a way to dump packets coming to the Actiontec so that I can tell if the inbound TCP packets make it to my router?
Does Verizon block inbound TCP requests for residential service? For all ports?
Thanks for any info,
Joe H.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I don't have it working yet, but I was able to run a test that forwarded the port to my laptop and I see (via wireshark) the inbound connection. So, while I can log into my server locally, I must have some sort of firewall rule on that server that's preventing connections from the outside.
Verizon, I apologize for implying you were blocking. This looks like a local issue on my end.

• Why can I get several HD channels in HD on my rooftop antenna, but the not on Fios?

Why can I get several HD channels in HD on my rooftop antenna, but not on Fios?
E.g. WABC, WNBC, WLIW and WNET come in at least 4 HD channels via my rooftop antenna but only one WLIW (non-HD) on Fios.
Bummer.
I can switch from the RF to HDMI sources but I thought with all of the channels I could at least get the ones I watch.
I'm located in Northern NJ USA, about 10 miles (line of sight) from NYC.

I assume you get the NJ versions of those channels?
Networks pay for exclusive programming rights within specific markets. Cable operators are only allowed to offer a specific set of local channels within their designated media market (DMA). If you aren't considered to be in the NYC market, then you aren't supposed to receive those channels.
Like many in the DC area, I can pickup the Baltimore locals with an antenna, but I as I live in the DC DMA, those are the only channels I receive from Verizon, Comcast, DirecTV, etc. Note there are circumstances where a customer might fall between two markets, living in an area with overlapping DMAs; in that case, the provider can choose to offer two different sets of locals. Verizon FiOS does do that in some areas.

• Why can I not use the channel name, which is obtained from the function of DAQmx Task, as the input of the channel name for the function of Get Channel Information of DAQ?

Why can I not use the channel name, which is obtained from the function of DAQmx Task, as the input of the channel name for the function of Get Channel Information of DAQ?

Not a lot of details here, but my guess is this isn't working for you because you are wiring in the task to the Active Channels Property and not the actual Channel Name. I have attatched a screenshot of what I believe you are trying to do. The Task has 2 channels in it, so I need to index off one of the channels and wire it into the active channels input of the Channel Property node. Then I can read information about that channel

• Why non-blocking write would block usually?

I want to know that why my non-blocking socket's write will consume such a long time. sometimes 400ms worst.
and this is my strace result:

• Verizon blocks ports?

I have DSL & Actiontec GT704-WG. I opened a port to host online game, but when I use a port scanner found here: http://www.canyouseeme.org/
It tells me my port is closed even though I forwarded everything correctly. Does verizon block any ports besides 80? I only use windows firewall so i know its not a firewall problem. Anyone with same router can help me?
Thanks
heres a snapshot of my router
http://i45.tinypic.com/105edd5.jpg

Verizon itself doesn't block ports at the head end besides port 25 for smtp outgoing email. they basically don't let spammers bounce messages off their smtp servers to send emails. Port 80 is questionably blocked by region - I have seen a lot of users in the forums that have port 80 unblocked. and then sporadically a user forum member will say its blocked but most people say its unblocked now. VZ made that decision middle of last year.
The router that verizon provides has a firewall and like all firewalls it blocks a BUNCH of stuff. that's what firewalls do. it's kinda their gig.
If you port forward, try to use portforward.com for a good guide.
Basically this is stuff you probably know, but I'll recap just in case.
Set your pc to have it's own IP address - you'll configure that on your PC nic settings under tcpip v4
then go into the router, and open the proper ports. I don't know what ports your game wants, but make sure the source port is set to any, and do not specify a number in that section.
make sure its pointed to the IP you gave your PC, and apply the changes and try again.
if that doesn't work there may be one or two users here that will pop up that may have additional info, but you can also reach out on the portforward.com forums and see if you can get some answers there, DSL Tech support won't help with any port forward configurations. they consider it advanced and out of their boundaries.

• Why does GoPro Cineform Support Alpha Channels?

Recently, Adobe Media Encoder started supporting GoPro Cineform for use as an intermediate format for video captured with a GoPro camera. One of the main points that GoPro gave as a benefit of this was that the codec supports Alpha channels. I'm wondering how and why a GoPro would record Alpha channels? It's my understanding that they are used as transparency information, and I don't see how the camera would record transparent video.
So, why does Cineform support alpha channels

• If I use Verizon Edge with Iphone 6, Can i just buy SIM when i travel outside the USA?

Hi,
I plan to switch to Verizon Egde with Iphone 6, but i just want to make sure if i can buy SIM to use with it when i travel outside the USA? Do i need to unlock the phone?
thanks.

i chatted with the rep, and i was told that unless iphone 6 paid off ( i was asking about Verizon Edge), the phone is Locked! And if i have to use it outside the USA, i have to call the the customer care..not sure what for.
I just want a phone and put new SIM in to use. No more, no less. I think Verizon makes thing more complicated for the customers (i've been with Verizon since 2005).
If thing is so complicated, i'd better look for another solution then.

• Does location based services (LBS) work for international locations (outside the USA)?

Does location based services (LBS) work for international locations (outside the USA)? For example does it work in Canada, European countries etc. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, but possibly limited to coverage of Skyhook database..
Applications that use location services also use the data from Skyhook...
Skyhook is a service that records the MAC addresses of Cell Base stations/towers and wireless access points.
Google Maps vehicles records the wireless AP data at the same time they get street view images.
There was some controversy over this - but they effectively record the location and the MAC address of any AP they find as they drive round. This gets sent to a massive database at Skyhook and is used to either locate without GPS or enhance/aid the GPS information. It's also why the location is always the road outside!
If your location/MAC relationship has not been mapped by Skyhook, Google or others - then the good news is that you can add it - although it can take a month or two at least - to work. The reason is that it depends which database is being used by Skyhook's clients..
Add your Wireless Access Point (or Wireless Router) here: http://www.skyhookwireless.com/howitworks/submit_ap.php
The main website for Skyhook is here: http://www.skyhookwireless.com
Hope that helps...!

• Why are there so many more choices on the USA iTunes Store? Surely having an iTunes account should let you access all itunes availability the world over? Also how do you request films/tv series to the UK itunes?

Why are there so many more choices on the USA iTunes Store? Surely having an iTunes account should let you access all itunes availability the world over?
Also how do you request films/tv series to the UK itunes? There's tv series I'd like but they're incomplete like The Batman & Xena Warrior Princess. And films theta aren't available for download but you can purchase in a store like HMV? Apple isn't doing itself any favours by secluding countries by their store. They'd make billions if you could just select the iTunes Store you want to search & purchase from just by signing in! If anything what they're doing is putting themselves into a corner, other companies like Samsung & HTC are already on too of them for innovation & ease of use. The people they're attracting are predominantly existing Apple users not new customers. What do you guys think?

It's not Apple's choice, they can only sell a particular item where the content provider/rights-holder has granted them a license to sell them. Content is licensed by the rights-holders to Apple on a country-by-country basis, each country therefore has to have its own store, and you have to be in a country to use its store - they want control over where their content is available.
You can try requesting that an item be added to the UK store via this page, but unless the rights-holder agrees to then Apple won't be able to sell it here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

I have an iPad and I would like to use a 3G connection outside of USA . Please help . Thanks.

Unless you have a US cell account with AT&T and wish to use their data roaming service (expensive), you need to sign up for data service with a cell service provider in the country in which you will be and get a micro-SIM from them. The carrier should provide appropriate instructions for setting up their service.
Regards.

Yes
Provide you can buy pre-payed GSM micr-sim cards in the domain to which you are travelling.
IF you can't then your either going to pay ATT huge amounts for international roaming or will have to find a free/low cost or public open WiFi hotspot.
