Why will .avi file no longer play?

I had an .avi file saved on my computer, captured from a DV camcorder. I played it fine in Quicktime Pro 7 and used it in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5 to edit. Once I was finished with it, I compressed it to a .zip file using the "compress" option in Finder. That was about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday, I uncompressed the zip file and when I try to play the .avi file in Quicktime, I get a message that says that Quicktime requires additional software. To my knowledge, I have every codec I would need installed in my computer, and if Quicktime needs additional software now, why did it not need it 2 weeks ago? Could the .zip file somehow have damaged the file? I would appreciate any suggestions!

Oh, additional information: other .avi files captured in the same way play fine in Quicktime.

Alternatively, you can download the free iConvert App from the App Store, it can convert into .mp4 which you could then add to your iTunes library and sync to iPhone/iPad/iPod :)

what kind of connection do you have? do you use the ipod 30 pin cable that connects directly to the head unit? it so, maybe you could get help on the alpine site, or a similar site?it could just be a bad connection. you may just have to go oldschool and use rca cables and plug those in...

Why are my files no longer downloading?

After converting a PDF into a word document; when I try to download the file nothing happens. So I click on the files tab and select the document I want to download and I get a messsage saying files not found. Why are my files no longer downloading?

What do you have your options set as in a Finder window?
Mine are set as "none" and show up alphabetically.

I am half way through an imovie project and recently added audio commentry, however some files no longer play also a few now have a yellow warning triangle?
Im assuming the files are now corrupt or something?

Yellow triangle - indicates that the pointer in iMovie to the Audio file used, no longer is valid.
iMovie - DO NOT Copy the audio You put into Your movie project's at all - only points to where You found it.
E.g. - You insert an Audio-CD and use a tune from this in Your movie - then you need a tune from another CD and Ejects the first one =====> RESULTING IN A YELLOW Triangle - pointer to the tune on Your Audio-CD is broken up on You ejected the CD.
I copy all needed Audio to a dedicated folder first (as I store in a proper place e.g. movie folder in User account) - then I use them into my movie.
The deeper thing is - That there is NO movie in Your Movie Project at all - only a small text document pointing to the material used (video, photos, texts and audio) AND how You want it to be presented AS a Movie.
Only when Shared / Finalized - there is an actual movie created.

MOV files no longer play on my iPad after the IOS7 upgrades

Prior to the recent IOS upgrade to 7, then 7.0.2, I was able to use my camera connection kit to import videos taken on my camera. They played without issue and I was able to share with friends from my iPad.
Since the upgrades, the files will import then when launched, show an error 'Cannot open' and then play with no audio. The videos will often then play at a faster speed than recorded. They files are useless without the audio. Suffice to say that they play on a PC without issue.
I desperately need to get this resolved as to why this has occurred. The only thing that has changed is the OS. Video files imported before the upgrade no longer play as before either.
Please help me if you can.

No unfortunately not. I don't know how to escalate this to Apple tech but I think that is the next step as I believe it is IOS based problem, not user related.

.AVI File won't play in CS4, Gspot says all Codecs are properly installed

I'm trying to edit a video in adobe premier pro from an Olympus XZ-1 (.avi file/mpjeg) but it doesn't play at all.
I tried to find if there where any codecs missing with Gspot, but it says all codecs are in place.
What else can be the problem and how can I solve it?

Welcome to the forum.
Yes, there is a clearcut answer, with three possible variations.
First, the Nikon should have their version of the MJPEG CODEC on a utility disc. That CODEC might install via the camera's driver, might be a separate install from the disc, or might install as part of a utility (say an editing program) on that disc. Not sure exactly where it will be located, but I feel confident that Nikon will have provided it. That will be the best, as different camera mfgrs. tweak common CODEC's. Even if you do not plan on using an included utility, you might need to install it, just to get the Nikon MJPEG CODEC. I did that for a Canon, and a Panasonic, and got their specific CODEC's, for their AV files.
The two variations would be either the Morgan, or MainConcept MJPEG CODEC, which will be a download and install. The weakness of these CODEC's is that they are more general, and might not reflect a Nikon tweak. That is why I mentioned Nikon's version first. It WILL be as good as it gets.
Good luck, and wish that I knew exactly where the Nikon MJPEG CODEC was located, or what process installed it, but if you find it added, after an installation, I would appreciate if you would update the thread, so that others will then know what to install, to get that CODEC.

Quictime Player WRAW avi files won't play

I have some video .avi files that I created in Matlab using the movie2avi command. On my old dual G4 running Tiger, these videos play fine in Quicktime player 7. These videos won't play on my machine running snow leopard. When I look at the movie inspector, it says that the videos are WRAW videos. In snow leopard, I try to open them in QT 7.6.6, and they won't play. The screen is black. Next to format in the movie inspector it says ", (it doesn't say WRAW like it does in Tiger.
I have downloaded perian, divx, xvid, flip4mac, and none of these have helped. VLC player can play them, but I want to edit several of these avi movies together in imovie. This was no problem in Tiger, but now it is major.
Is there some trick to getting these videos to play properly. Someone please help.

You may have Quicktime X on the Snow Leopard rig. Completely different set of legacy codecs than what are avilable in QT7+. Yoiur Snow DVD should include a QT7 installer, or so I've heard.
Speaking of legacy codecs, there is a setting someplace in QT that enables legacy codecs. Might help.
In the end, though, might be easier to locate an old G4 or G5 Mac and transcode to a more conventional format although you will still experience tremendous loss of pixel data if you try to compress too much.
MPEG4 is highly compressed and you have not stated the resolution of your starting files and your output movie. Science and math simulation applications can display huge files using magic. MPEG4 is really messy.

AVI file, streamclip,nothing plays. Would love some input

Things are never simple anymore. Just had a client give me an AVI file to use in a project. Of course it will not play. So I used streamclip to play it and all I get is a white screen. At this point I have no idea if it is a bad file or I am not using the proper tools to play it. I am lost. It is a 6.6 mb file so it must have some content. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, it can since it installs the ffmpeg and mencoder components.
in all honesty though if you are on an intel mac or a ppc one for that matter and can run windows via boot camp or Virtual PC respectively . . . or have access to a real PC you may just find that the easiest way to convert the file . . . . this is assuming that the client has the file in no other format since its as old as the hills to start with !

One last thought playing it back in mplayer and using screen recording software to capture it to a quicktime file is a bit of a rough and ready solution but since I doubt the quality of the original file is going to be stunning its another alternative worth considering
Ha ! . . one other wild stab in the dark solution . . upload it to YouTube as an HD file and see if YouTube can convert it for you . . simple enough to download YT videos these days . . easy enough to convert that to quicktime . . rubbish quality I am betting tho

.avi files no longer importing (86 :: 1)

Recently, After Effects CS5.5 has simply stopped importing .avi files. It's very frustrating sense I was in the middle of a project and it's just stopped reading my main video file.
I've tried everything from completly uninstalling and reinstalling CS5, to updating my codecs, but I always get:
After Effects Error: File "X.avi" cannot be opened, it may be in an unsupported format. (86 :: 1)
I've searched everywhere, but I can't seem to find a solution. I'm running it on a PC and it's not having any trouble with .mp4 files. I also use Divx if that's any help.
Any assistance would greatly be apreciated.

You can confirm by doing TWO searches in this forum: one using the term Klite or K-Lite and one for AVI. The first search will reveal others' experiences with K-Lite, and the second should reveal Todd Kopriva's recent post on AVI woes like yours. Looking over your specs, I'd also double check AE 10's (or 10.5's) System Requirements. I'm not certain if Vista 64-bit is up to snuff. You might need Win 7 for best results.
Now here's something I AM certain about: you're way low on memory for AE work. 4 gigs is almost nothing. There's no way you can use multiprocessing. I would say that 8 gigs is the minimum to run AE effectively. 16 gigs lets you use a couple of cores for multiprocessing. 24 gigs is good for multiprocessing. More memory than that lets you leave other applications open with no worries.

My imported AVI file doesn't play audio in Premiere Pro CS5 nor Encore CS5

I've been trying to find a solution for my "audio" problem for a few days now, but no luck...
First of all I'd like to mention that I work on a Mac.
I have an AVI file that plays perfectly fine in Quicktime (audio and video).
However, when I import it in Encore or Premiere, it shows the video but there's no audio.
I understand this probably has something to do with codecs? But I really have no clue what I can do about it.
I was working in Encore at first, cause I don't really need any editing, just a dvd I'd like to burn. Since the audio didn't work there I've tried importing in Premiere. Same problem of course. Then I tried to seperate the audio and video and transfered it into Soundbooth. Didn't change anything.
Another problem that occurred in Encore was some errors with gaps. I have about 10 AVI files that I put on the same timeline. Any advice on what I can do about that?
I'm kinda new in all of these things, so any help would be much appreciated.

And in Premiere I've tried the 4 different standard settings for DV PAL. All the same result with the red line.
I've read the articles about the codecs, but I really could use some help what I can do next. Should I convert it to an MPEG2 for dvd file for example? Which converter (free?) is good for Mac?
Or is there something else I need to do?
I understand how the programs work but I really don't know so much technical stuff about sound and video.
Oh, and just for your information: I imported an MP3 file also in the project, to play at the main menu, and that one is playing just fine, no problems there.

I am wanting to add an avi file to my families web page and every time that i upload it, it tells me that an additional plugin is needed to play the file. Then it tells me that there are no plugins available. How can I remedy this problem?

Help!- MP3 and WMA files no longer playing on my Micro Pl

I have a 52mb micro plus that I got in September 2005. All of a sudden, I can longer play my mp3 and wma files... just the radio. I have updated my creative zen file organizer, I have a full powered battery inside, I have done no significant damage to the player (I dropped the player once on the sidewalk but not from a big distance or very hard), and I really can't think of anything else that is causing the problem.
