Why won't Safari load up and textedit work properly?

Last night I turned on the computer and broadband modem to take a look on the internet. Initially I thought there may be a problem with the broadband connection -safari wouldn't load up, internet explorer wouldn't connect (but did load up) and itunes couldn't connect to the net either.
So I turned the computer off and decided to leave it until the morning and hope the problems had gone. However this morning I can connect to the net using internet explorer but safari still doesn't work. I click on the icon and nothing happens so I have to force quit it.
I also noticed that I can open up text edit and type using text edit but when I click on file to save something I just get the swirly loading icon, could this be connected?
I'm concerned that these problems are signs of more problems yet to come.
(I have a Powerbook G4, running 10.3.7 -I don't want to update my computer at the moment because last time i did I had massive problems)

I just wanted to add this incase anyone else had this problem. I found out it was because of some new fonts I had bought. When I disabled the new fonts Safari and textedit worked fine.

We've had this problem intermittently for several months. When visiting SOME websites (though never the same ones twice) instead of loading images, it comes up with a blue question mark in a box. if we try to reload the page, it will do one of two things: it will either reload exactly the same, or, it will reload in a format that shows vertical written links - no images. it almost looks like programming language, but it's readable.
also, when we go between links, we often get the message that "safari can't find the server". this is, again, erratic. If i try to go directly to the same website by typing in the address in the bar, i will get the connection. (so, if i go from youtube for example to try to connect to another website it won't work. but if i try to go directly to that website by just typing in the address myself, i can get it.) as i said, it doesn't always happen, but when it does it's a real pain!
lately, i've had a new problem too, which seems to relate: when using hulu.com, it will not load the show saying it is unavailable and to clear my cache. I've done that... and it still won't reload. yet, when i go to google, and search hulu.com, and go to the website that way, i can get to the show page no problem. Or, i have to quit safari and then go back to hulu and, again, no problem.
sometimes we can go for days without the problem, sometimes not.
any ideas on how to help this problem would be MOST appreciated! thanks

Go to Safari > Preferences then select the Appearance tab. Make sure Display images when the page opens is selected.
For server issues, try turning off the router for a few minutes, then restart it.
Hulu requires the Flash plugin. Uninstall your current copy of Flash, then reinstall > Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
Try emptying the Safari cache more often.
And reset Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes, click Reset.
And how much free space on the startup disk? Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Try Safari in another user account. Same problems there, then log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility. /Applications/Utilities
Select the startup disk in the panel on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions). If the startup disk needs repairing, follow the instructions for Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks

there might be something different on the mac you can try appleid.apple.com and reset your password i would also check the mac to see which appleid is signed you may have multiple apple ids and not know

Why won't safari load ebay?

Safari will load everything else all right but it won't load ebay. does anyone know why and have some suggestions I'm running lion.

Why won't safari load facebook

I was using facebook today and tried to use the video chat feature. The other user did not have it set up so it did not complete the call. I went to another site but when I tried to return to facebook I got the safari error that in can not open because the server is not responding. I reset safari, made sure extensions are off, deleted all history and caches, tried it in firefox, and tried it in safe mode. Nothing seems to work. All my other websites open fine.

If the server is not responding you cannot do anything. That's is like getting an error message that the person won't answer your phone call. What can you do? Try again later.

I have recently experienced this problem,and what I did was to switch the computer off ,switch off at the socket, unplug and wait for four or five minutes for the computer to reset itself and then plug in again and switch the computer on and you wil find that mac has reset itself.

Why won't character tracking (aka, chr spacing) work properly?

I'm not sure if this started happening with an update, or if it just randomly started happening, but for the past couple of weeks the character tracking drop-down in the paragraphs palette is buggy.
If I select -100 in the drop-down, I get -68.
If I select -50, I get -34.
If I try typing the number manually, it switches to those new values just like the drop-down does.
I can't for the life of me tell Photoshop to set character tracking to -100, -50, or ANYTHING anywhere near specific. It's like it does a little math when we choose a number, and modifies that number according to this math.
The math appears to be "change it to 68% of whatever the designer set it to", but it might actually be more complex than that.
Is there a fix for this? Did I accidentally toggle something on?

What exact version of Photoshop. What platform, Mac or Win? What exact version of the OS?

Thank you for your Reply. I found out the problem was with the USB cable supplied. I swopped it for a different one and the Colorfly C3 icon appeared on the desktop.

Why won't itunes load on travelmate 290

I have an Acer Travelmate 290 and although I can download iTunes on it, it refuses to work properly.
I cannot sync to it and all the features are not present.
Can anyone help?

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
and check the box marked
Allow Plug-ins
Then click
Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

What exactly is your problem? Is it, (a) your Mac doesn't read your external disk, or, (b) you can't retrieve your videos, or, (c) you can't play them, or, (d) you were able to play them at one point, but not any more.
What version of Mac OS X are you using, what app are you trying to play your videos with, what happens when you do, and what error messages, if any, do you get?

You can force quit from the Apple menu, Option + Command + Esc or the Activty Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities
