"Widescreen" filter on Dip to Color Dissolve?

I've applied the widescreen filter to two clips -- then now, I want to put a dip to white color dissolve between the two clips. But when I do it, the actual white isn't widescreen like the two clips and it looks odd.
How can I apply the widescreen filter to the white out part as well?
Many thanks,
Michael

Michael,
Seems like there would be an easier way to do it, but here's one suggestion that ought to do the trick:
1 Superimpose a bright green, solid color matte into the timeline onto a track that is directly above the transition.
2 Apply the widescreen filter from the other clips to the new color matte
3 Apply a Color Key from the Key folder in the Video Filters folder
4 Set the color to be keyed using the eyedropper to the same green as the color matte
Now the transition should appear within the bounds of the widescreen.

  • Dip to Color Dissolve + Widescreen Matte

    Forum,
When my Dip to Color Dissolve comes in my black bars (wide screen matte) are trumped by the dissolve.
I'm looking for a way to keep the bars all the way through the end of the Dip to Color Dissolve.
    No such luck yet.
Thanks to anyone that can help,
    Trey

The good thing about nesting though is that you can adjust the clips in the original sequence and then they'll update in the nest.

    Hi,
I am using a dip to color dissolve between clips, dipping to white. My problem is that the pillarbox lines are also dipping. Is there any way to avoid this?
    Thanks.

  • Saving custom 'Dip to Color Dissolve'... how?

    Hello all,
I'm stumped here. It seems I can customize several dissolves and video transitions/filters, but can never get to save my 'Dip to Color Dissolve' to white (instead of the default black).
Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
    Matt

Once you've changed the default settings for the transition in the Viewer window, you should be able to drag it into your Favorites folder in the Browser. Once that's done, it may help to give the "favorite" version a new name (like 'Dip to White") so you can easily identify it from the original.

  • Bug in FCP 5's dip to color dissolve with text?

Dear all, I'd likle to know if this is a genuine bug or some problem with our setting/system that we haven't yet figured out.
The problem appears when a dip to color dissolve is applied a text clip.
The symptom is what looks like compression artifacts appearing around the text as it dissolves. It is noticeable with normal text but looks really bad with drop shadow applied. It renders this transition unusable and it's a problem as it's part of our show's regular style. It can be worked around but this is not good enough for a pro broadcast application...
We are running FCP 5.0.1 on a dual 2.7ghz G5 with OS X 10.3.9 and working in DV PAL.
    Any help appreciated

Welcome to the discussions, Robert. Do you have your rendering set to Fast (linear)? There was/is a bug that causes problems if it is set to medium or high.

  • Problems with using the 'Dip to Color' dissolve

On a short project we decided to use the dip to color dissolve. We wanted the scene to desolve to white and selected the color without problems, however, on applying the dissolve it goes to white as intended but then dissoleves to black halfway through the transition. We should like this to stay white and then fade to the the next scene from white.
    Any suggestion would be welcome.
    Regards,
    Tom

Well too me it looked ok, but I have now adopted a work around - by using opoacity over a white background on a lower track which produced the desired result.
Thanks for getting back to me - I shall explore this transition/dissolve further some other time.

    Tom

  • Dip to Color Dissolve

I am dissolving two of my video clips out to white, but my video clips are 16:9 widescreen and when it dips out to white the whole frame goes to white, even the black bars on the top and bottom. Is there a way to fad it to white just in the picture frame, excluding the black bars?

What camera is this exactly? Some cameras shoot correct anamorphic widescreen, others just shoot in letterboxed versions, basically masking the top and bottom of the image. If your material really is shot letterboxed and you're working in a standard 4:3 sequence, probably the easiest thing to do is to create a black mask for the top and bottom. You can either do this with a graphics application like Photoshop. You can also do it with either two color mattes from the generators that are cropped to the right shape for the letterbox areas, or you could use a four-point garbage matte on the color matte, making a matte of the picture area and then inverting it.

  • Dip to Color transition with graphic

I'm using a Dip to Color Dissolve transition between a black screen and a graphic that has colored text with a black background. When using the transition, I get the flash of white color, as intended, but the outline of the graphic is visibile. Dragging along the timeline, I found that this was because the graphic, centered in the screen, changes color more slowly than the rest of the empty space around, making it so that you can see the square outline of the image during the transition.
Is there a way to fix it so that the graphic and the background change color throughout the transition at the same time, making it clean and unable to see the outline of the graphic?
My apologies if the explanation is somewhat confusing, I'd be happy to clarify if necessary! Thanks!

One way is to insert a Slug.
Click the little A button in the Viewer and select.
Transitions in FCE require Media Handles to be associated with clips to work like Dip to Colour. Search this forum for more info on Media Handles.

  • Cross Dissolve, Dip to Color not working

Hello. I am having trouble applying Cross Dissolve and Dip to Color to the transition between to separate clips. It works fine when I am transitioning between two clips originating from the same raw captured file (e.g. between two pieces I cut out of Raw 1), but I am unable to apply the transition to two clips from separate raw files (e.g. between a piece of Raw 1 and a piece of Raw 2).
The timeline only allows me to place the transition just AFTER the cut between the two clips, rather than straddling the two for a smooth fade. Any idea why this might be? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Enough handles?
    #1 Transitions "Insufficient Content"
    Shane's Stock Answer #1:
You need to make sure that your clips have enough media (called 'handles') at the beginning of the incoming clip and at the end of the outgoing clip for the transition. For example, if you have a 1 second (30 frame) dissolve, your in and out point need to be at least 15 frames from the edge of the clip.
What you are running into is that you are marking an out point at the end of a clip then adding a cross dissolve, say 20 frames in duration. Since the dissolve is centered on the cut, it will start 10 frames before the cut, and try to go 10 frames AFTER the cut...which it can't do.
What you need to do is plan how long your dissolve will be and back-time your cut so that it works.
a full 1 second crossfade reaches 15 frames into each clip. So, if you want to change a cut to a crossfade, there has to be at least 15 additional frames of each clip.
Say you're trying to crossfade from one clip into the very first frame of a second clip. FCP cannot 'create' 15 more frames of the second clip to do a crossfade. If they're not there, you're out of luck.
FCP has to extend the end of your first clip by 1/2 of your transition length, and the beginning of your second clip by 1/2 of your transition length, so those frames need to be in your system. The nature of a crossfade is mixing two clips together.

  • Dip to color effect in 16:9

Can anyone help? I am editing in widescreen, but when I add the dip to color (I'm using white as the color), the black areas above and below the video dip to white also. (Perhaps the problem is that I need to change the "canvas size" to 16:9??? I don't know much about this). Is there a way to have the effects apply only to the actual video portion, and not to the black areas above and below the video?
Note: When I'm editing, I generally see the video as widescreen, with black bars at top and bottom. Maybe I need to change something in the settings???
    Thanks!

Okay, Tom. I'm learning as I go here. I've never even thought about any "properties" of either items or sequences before. I just manage to get it into the computer and edit. Thanks for enlightening me! I just checked:
    The sequence properties are:
    Vid rate: 29.97 fps
    Frame size: 720 x 480
    Compressor: DV/DVCPRO-NTSC
Pixel Aspect: NTSC - CCIR 601
    Field Dominance: lower (even)
    Audio Rate: 48.0 KHz
    Audio Format: 32-bit Floating Point
    The item properties are:
    HDD:AVCHD
    Vid Rate: 29.97 fps
    Frame size: 1920 x 1080
    Compressor: Apple Intermediate Codec
    Data Rate: 15.5 MB/sec
    Pixel Aspect: square
    Field Dominance: upper (odd)
    Audio Rate: 48.0 KHz
    Audio Format: 16-bit integer
My options for "Preset Sequence Settings" (as you likely already know) are:
    Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
    Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
    Apple Intermediate Codec 720p30
    DV NTSC 32 kHz
    DV NTSC 32 kHz Anamorphic
    DV NTSC 48 kHz
    DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic
(the rest are PAL, which I know aren't what I want/need)
Is there a best setting for me (from the list above)? Or, do I need to make several changes to my system settings? Any advice you can offer will be reeeeeally appreciated!
    Thanks Tom!

  • Dip to color in and EDL

Has anyone found a solution for the dip to color error when an edl is created? Instead of creating two edits, a dissolve to color (i.e AX or GEN) and then a second edit going from color back to footage, it creates one edit dissolving between the two footage sources. The dissolve rate is usually correct, but you still have to rebuild the edit from scratch. Any help here would be greatly appreciated

Unfortunately talking the FCP editor into doing this is not an option. Avid used to have the same problem, and they fixed it. I'm hping FCP will do the same.

  • Problem with widescreen filter

    Hi everybody
I'm working with Final Cut Pro 5. When attaching the widescreen filter to the footage and I'm ajusting the 4:3 picture in the mask, the picture no longer is as sharp as it was without the filter.
I think this had something to do with the realtime in Final Cut Pro 5, since in FCP HD, when I had to render the widescreen filter, this problem didn't occur. (Kind of the same problem seems to be when I create "Text" and attach a normal dissolve which causes a shuttered image during the fade; I solved this problem by attaching the motion blur filter, so FCP5 was obliged to render - and it worked). However this didn't resolve the widescreen problem...
Has anybody an idea on this topic or experienced the same problem? Could this may be a problem with the software?
    Thanks for your help
    greetz

Thanks for your answer. I wasn't aware of the percentage based issue. If this is the problem, that means that the offset adjusting with keyframes is quite useless since I always have then offsets that reach for instance from -33 to -44, with offstet numbers like -33, -34, - 35...
Is there any solution to this problem to avoid the softness at all? Like recompressing the whole footage after the filter adjusting? Is there actually no problem with the RT; on FCP HD there was no such problem.
I'monitoring externally and I see the softness also on the canvas and also when the clip was exported etc.
    thanks

  • Looking for a "color pass filter"..Remove all colors but 1

Looking for a "color pass filter"..Remove all colors but 1 or 2.
FCP6 doesn't seem to have one.
Anyone heard of one that works really well & that is fast to use?

    Jim,
You are totally missing the point. I am an Adobe Premiere Pro instructor. I have been for 5 years. I added my 1st FCP system 2 weeks ago & am experiencing typical transitional curiosities as all who switch to other platforms & editing apps do.
PP has a color pass filter. I was curious to see if FCP did. That sounds logical to me:) If posting the question about the possibility of there being a color pass plugin bothers you, well , that has to do with you.
If you take a moment to read the prior correspondence, you might see my point.
I think we can bury the hatchet now:)

  • Final Cut Pro 6 dip to colour dissolve

i recently saw a documentary shot on HD which used colour flashes as transitions (similar to dip to colour in FCP). The colours used resembled the rainbow and created the same look as 35mm (the end of film stock)
Can anybody advise me on how to create and authentic white film flash transition.
i have tried using dip to colour dissolve, but could not achive the desired effect.
As as reference: a similar thing can be seen in Coldplay's Viva La Vida (look out for whit flashes)
    I would appreciate your help.

my bad, i meant "Violet Hill"

this should give a better demostration.
the effect i wish to achieve is the kind you very often see on 35mm footage (as seen in "violet hill".
i wish to create this kind of effect in a music video i'm editing.
the style of the music video is desaturated colours with high contrast.
by gradients, what do you mean? i'm not that experienced with FCP.
do you perhaps know where one can download FCP effect/transition plug-ins?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Can You Add The Widescreen Filter Without Stretching Video In iDVD ?

I'm sure I have asked this in the past but cannot find the answer and my memory is lousy!
I have added the Widescreen Filter to all the clips in a normal 4:3 DV sequence and everything looks OK.
I export the QT Movie and when viewed in QT Player it still looks OK as a letterboxed 4:3.
However, when I import it into iDVD or DVDSP I cannot stop it from being ridiculously stretched.
I have tried setting projects as 4:3 and 16:9 in iDVD but the video always appears in the preview window badly stretched.
Is it possible to make it appear as 16:9 without distorting the image?

Would you Adam and Eve it !
It was less than 8 weeks ago I was saying how it worked perfectly!!!!!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8207730&#8207730
However, now when I preview a movie (with the WS filter) in iDVD (or Simulate it in DVDSP) the image receives extra stretching.
Is it just that it normally appears like that in the preview but will play OK when burned to a DVD ?
