WiFi connected but not in use

In settings -> WiFi, iPhone claims it is connected to my home WiFi network. However, "3G" still appears in the top left. Sometimes the WiFi symbol will come on for a few seconds at first, but it always reverts back to 3G.
I have an iPhone 3G which connected to the WiFi with no problems both before and after 3.0 update. It still connects to WiFi and uses all net apps with no problems, even without phone service. I turned it off to make sure it wasn't interfering in any way, but the new 3GS still won't stay on WiFi.
Throughout all of this, it ALWAYS says in WiFi settings that it is connected. It seems like it just isn't using the connection for some reason.
I have tried power-cycling the router and iPhone. I have tried selecting Forget Network and rejoining it.
I saw one similar topic here that required all sorts of router adjustments, but I can't go messing with my router. Please help me find a solution that involves only the iPhone itself!

Setting the router preamble to long does not work for me. I have tried everything.
I am connected to WiFi, according to the icon in the corner, but it just stops working at random times for all applications. The only way I can get the WiFi working again (temp fix) is to flick airplane mode on and off. Then it will work for a while, and then mysteriously stop working again, even though it says I am connected etc.
I have n 1st gen ipod touch, and two 3G phones here that can connect and stay connected with absolutely no problems, so it is definitely something with the 3GS.
I think I am going to have to try returning this iphone to Apple and getting a replacement, as I have tried everything to get it to work properly.
Not to mention the compass is VERY badly off with this iphone. But that is not as big a deal as WiFi refusing to work.
It is too bad because I get great battery life with this iphone... better than my 3G... and I am worried about returning this one and getting a replacement with poor battery life that I read so many other people seem to have.

On 3G we cannot send  Business emails from either our iPhones or Ipad and this also happens with some WiFi connections but not all.  Yet we can always send emails from our Hotmail Account using both 3G and WiFi.
We bought the iPhones and Ipad so that we could send emails while we are out of the Office, but we are not able to do this unless we can find a WiFi connection. Incoming emails are fine.  We use IMAP, for Business emails just incase this is relevant and I know that Hotmail is POP3.
Our technical IT knowledge is not great, so we look forward to your suggestions as to how to resolve this.

Oh no! I'm sorry to hear you had problems in the are you're in AkJohnDye. I checked your coverage and I do see we have an extended 4G coverage. This means you're able to use your phone but it needs to be activated in a 4G LTE Verizon Wireless coverage zone. I apologize.

  • Photosmart C310: WiFi connected, but not showing up in network via Mac or iPhone

I am using a HP Photosmart Premium C310. It is connected to WiFi, but does not show up on Mac or iPhone via Wifi:
    - iPhone Airprint does not find the printer (select printer)
    - Mac "add printer" does not find the printer
    - newest HP Setup Application (HP_Lion_Ink_SW_v12.13.14, Dec 2011) finds printer only as long as connected via USB, reconfigures WiFi settings, but  can not re-find the printer when USB cable is taken off
    - I can send "ping" to the printer using the IP address shown in touchscreen info panel so it is online in WiFi
    - I tried to reset factory settings for settings + network settings, no change...
Is that a defect or any idea how to fix the problem?
    Best regards, any help appreciated...

    Hi,
Per your description, i believe the issue may being caused by your router compatibility with Apple Bonjour, which require multicasting support in order to operate propertly.
In order to verify, try to temporary create an ad hoc connection between your iPhone and the printer and check for any change:
Step One : Restore the network defaults on the HP All-in-One
On the product control panel, touch the Setup icon ( ). The Setup menu displays.
    Touch Wireless .
Touch and then slide your finger down on the display to select Restore Network Defaults .
When asked 'Are you sure? ' touch Yes .
After the network defaults restore, touch Wireless Connection , and then touch On .
The message 'Wireless Radio is now on ' should briefly display on the control panel and the Wireless light ( ) on the HP product should start to blink. The HP product is now openly broadcasting the ad hoc wireless network.
Step Two: Create an ad hoc wireless network connection between the HP All-in-One and the Apple device
On your Apple device, tap the Settings icon ( ).
    Tap Wi-Fi .
Under Choose a network , find the name that starts with HPC310 , and then tap it. A checkmark should display to the left of the name.
Wait three minutes to make sure that the ad hoc connection is established and try printing from the iPhone by taping the Action icon ( ) and then tapping Print.
If you were able to print through the direct printer, it means the router more likely cause the problems..
Please clarify your router brand, model and the router firmware version if available.
    Regards,
    Shlomi

  • Iphone 4 (4.2.1. - 4.3) Wifi connected, but not connected to the internet.

I bought my iPhone 2 weeks ago, never bothered trying to use my wifi. Now that I need it, it won't work.
I was on 4.2.1. 03.10.01, Wifi did not work so I upgraded it to 4.3 thinking it's a "version problem". Now Im on 4.3, nothing is repaired.
When I connect to my wifi connection, it says that I am connected, but whenever I try accessing the internet via Safari, The App store, youtube, weather, maps... it's says that no network was found.
My computer and my siblings ipod/computers/iphones wifi work properly.
Could I please get a solution, and if I go to the apple store will this be solved? I still have a warranty till May I believe.
    Thank you

Believe it or not but your problem starts at the router level. When you think you are connected to your WiFi, tap Settings > WiFi > and the blue ">" next to your network name. Your device IP most likely starts with 169.x. This is an internal device IP generated by your iPhone that occurs when your router doesn't complete the DHCP assignment of IP addresses properly.
Try the following (anyone of which may fix the problem):
    1. Reboot your router (unplug the power cord for 30 seconds)
    2. Reset the network settings on your phone - tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    3. When the phone restarts, tap Settings > WiFi > Other and re-enter your network name, security, and network password.
If you continue to have problems, then it's time to stop using WEP encryption (if you are still using it) and check to see if router firmware updates for your router. If you have to use WEP, set it to 128 bit and use the WEP hex key in place of a password.

  • Playbook WIFI connected but not able to access network

    Hi,
Have a 32GB Playbook and from new has had wifi issues. Running 2.1.0.1314.
Symptoms are that works fine on a variety of open and secure networks until a point where wifi is showing as connected, it tells me I have an internet connection but no apps or browsers able to access the internet, just unable to resolve host name.
Having trawled the internet I have tried the following fixes -
All methods of rebooting and changing date/time etc.
Deleting the saved network - in fact all networks
    Changing various settings etc.
The only fix that works is a complete security wipe at which point it works again until the next time, which has now occurred 5 times.
The onset of each episode of being frozen off of networks seems to be login on open connections. I have it set to ask for connection to a saved network and when accepted the login page opens. However on occasion the login "handshake" seems to get confused and I am left with the device supposedly loggedin but no network access.
No matter what I then do the same issue exists on all networks I try until I do a full wipe.
All settings are standard, websites allowed to access location etc.
Can't register the device for support, get the message that support not available.
    Any help appreciated.

    UPDATE
After deleting all saved networks and rebooting the PB it failed to connect again to the secure network I had last tried.
However, it did connect to an open wifi hotspot. I am wondering whether I need to ensure that the next network I try after experiencing the issue and doing the above is different to the one I was trying to connect to last.
Is there some kind of residual network memory hang up !
Will update again next time it occurs, which historically has been every 2 - 7 days.

  • Wifi connected but not able to access the internet

I was able to connect to the wifi, but can not access the internet. It shows the blue bars, but for example, I can't log into facebook. My laptop, my blackberry are all connected but I can't get the ipod to work. I have removed and reinstalled the network connections, and even adjusted the ip address, to no avail.

I am not having problems at home, works fine with my home network. In Starbucks or the Airport I can't exactly go change their router settings. I think Apple has a problem here that they need to fix. There is no reason why the Ipod Itouch WiFi settings have to be so difficult, cranky. It shoul dbe able to work more easily.

  • Wifi Connected but not allowing connection to internet....

Ok for starters I am by no means computer illiterate. I have several industry certifications and have worked in IT in one form or another for over 10 years. That being said I have tried all the obvious solutions to fix this issue. So please save your effort in telling me to flush dns servers, check connection settings on clients, run ipconfig with various switches, etc... all this has been done and failed. That is not to say I know everything, because I don’t, I’m just saying that I have tried all the obvious troubleshooting routes.
Now… on to my issue. I have a WRT54GS ver. 5 and it has worked flawlessly for several years now. My machine is hard wired to the access point and I have no troubles connecting to the internet via said PC. The wireless I use for my wife’s laptop and my iPhone. I use mac filtering and WPA Personal with TKIP, dhcp is disabled and IP's are assigned manually via TCP/IP settings in windows. Two days ago my wife complained that she was unable to connect to the internet despite the fact that she had a solid connection to the AP. After checking her machine and finding everything in order in terms of the connection settings I also discovered that my iPhone was also unable to connect to the internet via Wi-Fi, again despite a strong connection to the AP. This led me to believe that the issue lied with the AP since nothing had changed on the client machines and all the connection settings were correct. I am able to ping the AP from the client but it is not routing traffic to the internet.
That brings me to troubleshooting the AP. I logged in and verified that all settings were as they had always been in the router, not one thing had changed. So to make absolutely sure it was not some setting in the AP that had been changed somehow I reset the router to defaults and re-configured it EXACTLY as it had always been. Still no love. I also tried the following to further troubleshoot the issue with no luck:
Clearing WINS and TCP/IP stack in windows on the laptop.
Disabling WPA and connecting with no security save MAC filtering
(yes I made sure that MAC filtering was set to permit and that all MAC addresses were correct)
    Upgraded to the latest firmware.
Unplugged wireless phones throughout the house and cycled through all 11 channels to rule out interference.
I guess what I am now trying to figure out is whether or not the routers Wi-Fi is bricked. Is it possible for the Wi-Fi to be bricked but still be able to connect to the Wi-Fi network with a strong signal and for wired to work just fine? I would think that if the Wi-Fi was kaput that one would not be able even connect to the AP via wireless. I am to the point now where I’m about to say screw it and just go buy a Wireless N router and be done with it. But to be honest I am a little leery of Linksys now if a two or three year old router is bricked without warning or any apparent cause. Even though I have used Linksys products for the entirety of my IT career, I am now having second thoughts about going with cisco products if indeed it is bricked and I have to go out and buy another AP. Any help the community here can offer would be much appreciated, I don’t mind getting a new AP as the N speeds would be a plus but I want to make sure that all hope is lost for the WRT54GS before I do.

    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, as stated in the OP all clients wired or otherwise have IP's and DNS info manually entered in windows TCP/IP configuration. All of the IP info has been the same for years and it works fine on my machine (hard wired) with the only difference being the last octet of the IP, subnets and DNS settings are the same on all clients.
All 4 clients (My PC, Laptop, Iphone, and wireless printer) can all ping both ways without issue. As I mentioned before the wireless clients connect to the AP just fine and all settings are verified correct. My WLAN is still working flawlessly and I can connect to and  view all clients and shares. The issue seems to lie with the WiFI routing to the internet: I can connect to the internet from the wired PC and all the clients on the local network have connectivity, the only issue I have is that the wireless clients (in spite of a working connection to the AP) cannot seem to get thorugh the internet. However I did change the RTS and Fragmentation to 2304 and the beacon to 50 as you advised and set the DNS servers to what you listed on the wireless machine and was still able to ping back and forth but had no connectivity to the internet.

  • Ios 7 wifi connected but not working

my iphone 5s running ios 7 is connected to my home wifi but its not working, but my pc is doing fine on that wifi. and when i try connecting my iphone to other wifi it seems to work without any problem. i've reseted network settings many times and reseted all settings once but it wouldnt work for me. so whats the problem and how can i fix this?

Try power cycling your router. Remove the router from power for about 30 seconds and then start it back up again. After it is finished configuring, try connecting your device again.

  • I can make a WiFi connection but pages will not load. WiFi works for a laptop using windows

I can make a WiFi connection but pages will not load.  WiFi works ok on a laptop using Windows.  I have reset the WiFi settings but this makes no difference.

Thanks, Linc, but  that almost helped:
Because the retina 15 only has a wifi connection (no ethernet), that's the connection I'm stuck with for the notebook. But on the 27iMac, I did have both ethernet and wifi enabled. When I turned the wifi off on the 27, therer was a brief moment when both computers were showing their counterparts when I tried to make a network connection. BUT, after a few seconds of 'searching', the computer I was trying to connect to disappeared from the Network list.
So I tried the opposite; the retina can only connect thru wifi, so that's a given. I swithched my ethernet off and then enabed the wifi on the 27 and ....same thing: When I try a network connection, there are a few seconds of 'searching', then the ony option I'm left with is share screen, which doesn't work either.
I've read the 'dropped' network is a problem with the retina, but the odd thing is that I never lose my internet connection—that continues to work fine, as does Air Drop—but I can't seem to connect, network-wise.
Any ideas about the dropped network?

  • I have a wifi connection but "safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet" I have reset everything; I have used Itunes to update and reset. Still no good. It worked until 2 days ago

I have a wifi connection but "safari cannot open the page because it is not connected to the internet" I have reset everything; I have used Itunes to update and reset. Still no good. It worked until 2 days ago

Reset everything.. did you do this?
Tap Settings / General / Reset / Reset Network Settings
If you're already been there, done that, could be a third party app preventing Safari from accessing the web.
Re sync your apps 5 at a time, then test the iPad.

I do have wifi connection but no internet, how is this possible? I logged in to the internet at my friends place and when I got home my own internet was not working anymore

This is possible to be connected to WiFi but not internet.
You connect to your modem/router via WiFi and whether it is connected to the internet or configured properly to route the internet to WiFi devices is a different story.
Now if you've already reset your WiFi (try disabling and enabling) and perhaps even restarting your MBP
Then make sure that your modem/router is connected to the internet.
You can try any other device, lights on the modem/router or use Eth cable to test.
    Report back your findings.

  • 10.10.3 broke my ethernet connection but not my WiFi

I usually connect to the internet on my late 2008 MacBook via Wifi, and when I need the additional speed I just plug in the ethernet cable from the router to the laptop. But following the update to 10.10.3 (and following some changes that needed to be made to the router settings), I can still connect to the WiFi fine, but not with ethernet. Even when I completely remove the router from the equation, connecting to the internet with the ethernet cable directly to the modem does not work. Any help?

    1. If the computer is connected through a switch to a cable or DSL modem, and the modem is not acting as a router, then only the first device to connect will get an address. You need to change the configuration of the modem so that it shares its Internet connection with all devices on the local network, or else connect a router.
    2. If there are other devices on the same network, and none of them can get an address, then the problem is on the DHCP server (most likely, the router.)
    3. If other devices are working normally, or if there are no others, the problem may be caused by a faulty cable or port on the hub. Switch connections with one of the working devices.
    4. Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Ethernet service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane.
If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password.
From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Ethernet service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.

  • My usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

my usb that i have been using on my computer for a while suddenly stopped working, but is still glowing and letting me know that it is connected, but not showing up in disk utility

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

  • Intermittently iphone 6 and 6 plus is wifi connected but internet does not work.

    Hi,
I have an issue where intermittently iphone 6 and 6 plus is wifi connected but internet does not work. iMessage works though.  Toggling the wifi setting clears
the issue temporarily but it occurs again.  Running iOS 8.3 now.  This was the case on iOS 8.1 and 8.2 as well.
I have tried the typical troubleshooting steps (reboot/reset network settings/disabling location services for wifi/upgrade/etc)
My router is an EA9200 router with 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz.  It is configured with all bands with the same name.
All other devices in my house works perfectly fine and has no disconnects (ipad/macbook air/tv's/receivers)
My thought is that iphone 6 cannot handle well the moving around between bands.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

Have you tried to reboot your router by turning off the power (you may have to unplug it from the power source), then waiting about 30 seconds, then turning it back on?  This seems to solve a lot of problems.
