  • Why is T-Mobile contract-free iPhone 6  not unlocked , showing * SIM not Valid* erorr outside of US?

Just before Christmas I purchased my iPhone 6 64 at full-price from the Stonebriar Apple Store, TX. At the time of purchase, I indicated several times that I want to use my phone outside of US and Apple Store representative assured  me that my only option was  T-Mobile contract-free iPhone which came   totally unlocked and I would be able to use it internationally with no problem. I used my phone about 3 weeks in US with my prepaid AT&T SIM card without any problems and I was the happiest with my purchase but since I came back to my country my biggest nightmare has started : Just arrived at airport trying to use my local SIM, I faced the *SIM not valid* message due to a *Activation Policy*. My awful experience just started with both my family and I had the most frustrating time trying to find each other at airport. The next day when I called Apple care and explained the situation the adviser told me that although I bought the phone contract-free, my phone is now locked to AT&T and I had to contact them. I contacted AT&T several times spending countless hours to explain the situation and I spoke to near 9 different people including a manager ; at first they did not even believe me and they told me that it is impossible for AT&T to just block ppl's phones just because they activated their phone with their SIM -and it is totally making sense- but I insisted that Apple Care told me that my phone is locked by them and this is evident from their system. Anyway, one of them suggested me to request unlock my device via ATT website and I waited 4 days for their response till I received the denial because according to their record I used my prepaid service less than 6 months and I am not eligible for unlock request!!! Angry me called them again and after being on the line more that one hour, the adviser told me that my phone is not locked by them and it is actually Mercury who did this and they are the one that I had to call - at that moment I remembered that the night before I just tried my T-mobile SIM in my phone for few seconds to see what would happen and that's it - no service no activation ! When I called Apple this time and after speaking with at least 3 different pple, they told me that their system is  actually unable to show which carrier has locked the device and they could only see which SIM card is the last one used in the phone  and the problem is merely because of a latent Activation Policy  that some iPhones can be used only in US and nowhere else and in US you may use it with different carriers but it does not mean that the phone is unlocked, and my only option is to contact the Apple Store I made my purchase to see whether they can(!! it is up to them to do it, they can easily say they can not) exchange the phone or not ! I told them that it is impossible for me to go there because I will not come back to US in next 9 months and I do not have access to any apple stores in my country, but this is the only thing that they could do , to say that they were sorry for the inconvenience.
The sad part of story is that after waiting 2 weeks without phone and  spending more than 100$ to make international phone calls, this is the only answer they had for me. It is very hard for me to believe that Apple does not have any control over their own Activation Policy  and for some one with my situation they are completely clueless.   Apart from being  frustrated, I am very disappointed with Apple and their costumer care because the advisers seemed very confusing or maybe they themselves were confused even more ! It is very abusive and it is like that I am robbed almost 1000$. Please help if you have the same experience or if you suggest that it is a good idea to file a complaint !

I managed to chat with an Apple Online Store representative, and he assured me that if purchased online it's completely unlocked from day 1...
So i guess that counts as official confirmation.
I'm still worried though, something is not right with all this contradicting information, or it's probably just marketing!
I know they are in the business of making profit and I myself work in an Apple related business, but i have to stress that there are moral and freedom-of-market issues with locked phones, they really are illegal in many countries (correct if you ask me).
Locked phones paid full price is troll, really makes no sense at all!

  • Will the contract-free iphone 5 work in europe?

I'm currently in the US, but only as an exchange student and I was wondering if the iphone 5 without a contract would work both in the US and Europe.
    Thanks

  • I have a local carrier number, if i by a contract-free iPhone 6 can i swap the T-mobile sim that will be in the phone with my local carrier sim? in other words, IS the contract-free iphone also unlocked so it can be used with any carrier?

The T-mobile phone is advertised to be SIM-free.  This does NOT mean unlocked.  Unlocked iPhone 6's are not yet for sale in the US.

  • Will factory unlocked/contract free iphone 4s work in trinidad and tobago?

Bought a factory unlocked/ contract free iphone 4s from the apple store online directly, shipped to a family member and they're bringing it for me tomorrow. I've seen people complaining abt activation issues and stuff. I'm curious as to whether i'll encounter any problems. I shouldn't because my service provider is a registered apple partner (bmobile - they're still selling the iphone 4, haven't upgraded to 4s down here). Anything special i need to do to activate my iphone when i get it?

US iPhone will not work with LTE/4G elsewhere. This is due to hardware
in the US iPhone, and cannot be updated.

  • Is the Tmobile contract free iphone 5s unlocked? Will I be able to use it with a local network in Ireland?

I'm thinking about buying an iphone 5s from an Apple store in the US in a few weeks time when I am there. If i buy it from a store is it factory unlocked or do they all come with contracts? If I bring it home to Ireland will I be able to bring it to my network provider (Vodafone) and get a new sim card put in so I can use it everyday in Ireland?
If I buy it in America, can it only be used in America or does it even make a difference, once it's unlocked? Will I be able to use it and all features fully?
On the apple website it says you can buy a Tmobile contract free iphone 5s. Is this the same as unlocked?
Thanks in advance for any answers and help.

"If you buy iPhone for T-Mobile, it will arrive with a nano-SIM card already installed that you can activate by visiting an Apple Retail Store or a T-Mobile store or by calling T-Mobile. When you travel internationally, you can use a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5s from a local GSM carrier. For details on LTE support, see www.apple.com/iphone/LTE."
If you buy it from the Apple Store you can activate it when you buy it.

If you want an unlocked iPhone then you have to wait until unlocked iPhones are sold, yes.

Yes!! the contract free mean that it's GSM+CDMA so you can use it all over the world

  • If i buy a T-mobile's unlocked, contract-free iPhone 6 in US at Apple's website, can i use it in China with a local carrier?

if i buy a T-mobile's unlocked, contract-free iPhone 6 in US at Apple's website, can i use it in China with a local carrier?

The Model 1586 / 1524 happens to be the one most compatible with China
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/
If the phone is primarily for use in China - I would look to getting an unlocked version of that
There are contradicting theories about Sprint for international use - so I would stay away from the Sprint model in the US

Beyond what had been said about unlocked phones and limitations of iPhones on the T-Mobile network, T-Mobile appears to sell microSIMs:

  • A contract-free iPhone 6 Plus from Verizon could be used in Mexico?

Hi, I live in Mexico an I will go to WA an NY next month, I would like to buy the Contract-Free iPhone 6 Plus from Verizon, I have heard that if I buy the iPhone of Verizon it will be unlocked and it could be used in Mexico.
Is this true? What should I ask them to be sure it will work?
      Thanks!!

No. Verizon does not sell a contract-free iPhone nor one that is unlocked. T-Mobile sells the iPhone contract-free, but it will be locked to T-Mobile's service for 40 days after purchase. Then they can be asked to unlock it.

  • Will there be a iPhone 5s Factory unlocked?

    Hi,
Will there be a iphone 5s factory unlocked phone?
I go over to the iphone 5s page and scroll down to find that it says Contract free T-Mobile,
Does that mean it will work with att? I dont want to get the phone from att becuase i dont want a contract at the moemet, and i will be traveling out of the U.S this december for a month and i would like to use my iphone 5s there with service,
I talked to a apple rep right before this and he said it will only work with T - Mobile because it says the sim is already installed,
And i asked him if i can use it for att, and he said no because the iphone 5s doesnt have a simcard slot that you can take out like with the iphone 5
which doesnt make sense because tmobile and att both run on sims.
Thank you very much in an advance!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (hopefully with some factual information via a weblink), but there is currently NO Factory Unlocked iPhone 5S for sale in the United States. Factory Unlocked (aka. "Sim-Free") is only offered for the 4S and 5C.
All customers can purchase an iPhone 5S from Apple or respective carrier for the full retail price ($650+) and those devices will be internationally unlocked but locked to the carrier you pick.
In my case, I purchased an AT&T iPhone 5C at full retail price. I did not sign a new contract, pay an upgrade fee, etc. My phone, when plugged into iTunes tells me it's Unlocked. Again, I don't have a T-Mobile Nano-Sim to test if it's fully unlocked (domestic & international) but it's safe to assume I will only be able to use my 5C in the USA with AT&T.
Does this mean that the phone can never be fully unlocked? Probably not - I imagine all carriers and 3rd parties will be able to unlock the device (per-carrier terms, etc.).
Hope this clears up any confusion.
*Contract-Free T-Mobile is not fully unlocked either. T-Mobile no longer has contracts so Apple cannot present the T-Mobile version in the same space as the other carriers on their website. T-Mobile, like the other carriers, likely have the ability/option to fully unlock your device upon request (per-their carrier terms).

  • Help with buying contract-free iPhone 5S with T-MOBILE $30.00 prepaid plan

Ok, I just want to clarfiy
    If I purchase a T-MOBILE contract-free iPhone 5S from Apple here http://store.apple.com/us/buy-iphone/iphone5s
will I be able to get the T-MOBILE plan listed here with the Nano sim I receive from my iPHONE 5S from Apple http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-plans
"$30 per month—Unlimited web and text with 100 minutes talk
100 minutes talk | Unlimited text | First 5 GB at up to 4G speeds
This plan is only available for devices purchased from
Wal-Mart or devices activated on T-Mobile.com"
or will I have to get a nano sim here http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/sim-card#close-cart
and then activate online on tmobile.com to get the prepaid plan for $30.00?

No, the SIM card included with the T-Mobile phone on the Apple site does not allow you to activate for the $30 prepaid, as there is no "activation code" provided with the phone and you need a code for prepaid activation on the T-Mobile site. As you know T-Mobile store will not help you with this plan.
I just did this. (1)  I went on Apple store site and purchased an iPhone 5c selecting the T-Mobile "unlocked and contract-free SIM-Free" option.
    (2) You also need to go on T-Mobile and buy the (so called) "activation kit"  http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/sim-card ; select the "Nano Sim Card"  "Phone" then "Add to cart". This is currently free, so I got 2, in case. It took about 3 business days to receive the package via UPS.
The package has instructions, but does not mention the $30 option (it is not widely advertised in T-Mobile as you know). However, no problem, it will become available during activation.
    (3) Now replace the SIM card that you received from Apple with the SIM card you received from T-Mobile.
    (4) Before you start the activation process, write down clearly (and double check)  the "activation code" found in the T-mobile activation kit, the "SIM card serial number" found in the kit as well and the "Phone serial number (IMEI)" found on the iPhone box you received from Apple.
    (5) Go to T-Mobile "Activate your new phone"  https://www.t-mobile.com/shop/plans/ActivateCodes.aspx  and enter those 3 numbers, very carefully. (I have heard any mistake may stop the process and you need a new SIM card to restart).
In the next screen, you will pick the plan (all prepaid plans are showing, including the $30 100 min / unlimited text / web, but beware as there is another $30 for 1500 min, no web) and then a phone number (or transfer your phone number) - when you click "next" you actually receive a text message on the phone right away! In the next screen you enter your payment information (debit, credit or purchased prepaid card), then you are done.
    (6) I actually went back to my-t-mobile.com to create a login - pw so I can change my payment method later and see the data and minutes used.
No need to adjust any APN settings. Got LTE in my area and internet speed clocks at an amazing 32.77 Mbps Download. ENJOY!

  • Does T-Mobile contract-free iphone 5s works in India

Does T-Mobile contract-free iphone 5s works in India, as i wish to carry one for my bro.

The clearest answer is - UNLOCKED iphone 5S is not sold yet in US. Same was with 5 or 4S when they came out. Usually Apple does not start selling unlocked models for few month. Will it work or it will not in Argentina or France - no one here knows until they actually try, but it is not unlocked I assure you.
You however can get unlocked 5c, cause it is not actually new model, just colored 5.

  • Is Tmobile contract free iPhone 6 locked to Tmobile network? Can it be used internationally with other carriers?

If I buy a Tmobile contract free iPhone 6 in apple store, does that mean it is locked and can only use Tmobile network? Can it be used internationally with other carriers? I travel a lot and do not want to find out my phone does not work the moment I insert a local carrier sim card.

"The iPhone 6 will come unlocked as long as customers pay full price," a T-Mobile representative said. "If customers choose to take advantage of T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan it will be locked until the device is fully paid off. This policy applies at both T-Mobile and Apple stores."
