Will a SATA Drive work in my PM G5?

I want to add a second HD to my G5 Power Mac Dual 2.3..
The User's Guide says to install a Serial ATA drive. I see a 400 gig Seagate SATA Hard drive on sale at Best Buy.. Is SATA the same as an ATA?
Will it work?
Thanks

Yes, they are a problem, but if you have access to a PC with a floppy drive and SATA you can fix the SSC problem. I have two older 500GB Seagate drives in my G5 and they are fine. It worried me when I first put them in and they didn't work, but once I fixed them it was cool. I had 400GB Seagates in the before that and they never had a problem.

Well, there are different versions of Sata.  See:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA#Revisions
I think this is the info someone would need:
You may want to post machine info.
blue apple > about this mac > more info button. Click on the hardware line. It has a little triangle in front of the word hardware.
    Leave out the serial number.
    Example:
    Machine Name: iMac
    Machine Model: PowerMac4,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (33.11)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 600 MHz

  • Will a 2tb drive work in my macpro?

I have a 2008 8 core macpro. Will a 2tb internal sata drive work ok? Thanks.

Short answer is "yes." You have the long answer, which is, it's not as fast, won't take advantage of the new SATA controllers, etc.
But if you are looking to cram a 2T drive in your system, it will work and it will format to 1.89T or so, giving the room you need. I have a Mac Pro 4,1 (Dual Quad-Core Nehalem) box with three 1T drives and one 1.5T drive and they all work great. I'm using the larger drive as a Time Machine drive. In that I'm looking for security and capacity, speed isn't that big a deal.
And if you're looking for raw speed, you need to go to external arrays on your Mac Pro. If you're editing HD video, you must be on an array and you should be on a system that will feed you as many streams as your CPU can handle.

  • Will this hard drive work in my 2009 MBP 13 inch?

Hello, I've decided to upgrade the hard drive in my Mid 2009 MBP 13 inch to roughly a 500gb from 250gb. My friend has a 2011 MBP 13" and he just upgraded it to 1TB and has his 500gb 5400rpm SATA 2 and said I can have it. Will that hard drive work in my 2009 MBP without any headaches? I just want to be sure before I put it in...Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!

I think 750GB is the Max you can install in your 09 MB.  ( not a 100% sure )
I've seen some people trying to install 1TB on their 09 MB and had issues.
Give it a shot, if it doesn't work, you can always exchange it for the smaller 750GB.
    Good luck..

You can put two 2gb RAM sticks in your model 2,1 but it can only use 3,3gb. This is a hardware limitation and cannot be changed.

  • Will a Maxtor DiamondMax 11 SATA drive work in a G4?

I'm torn between a couple of Maxtor internal drives to add to my G4 (Mirrored Doors) and for the sake of futureproofing I thought I'd better go for the DiamondMax 11 Drive (500GB) which looks to be very good.
However I'm having a lot of problems trying to find if there will be any compatability issues with my G4.
    Can anyone help?

    Hi, Mark -
Both of the internal hard drive buses on a G4 (MDD) model are ATA. An SATA drive will not work on them.
However, you can add an SATA PCI controller card, and connect the SATA drive to it.

  • Will this hard drive work on my T61? Toshiba MK5065GSX

This is the link to the one I want
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/194726
I could get this instead, Ive seen on a thread here someone fitted it to a T61
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/136790
There are quiet a few to choose from on that site, the link is below, however I do not know what I need besides it being a SATA. I would ideally like to spend less than £50 but its not a huge deal if its more and I prefer 500gb but 320 is ok.
    http://www.ebuyer.com/search?limit=50&store=2&cat=4&subcat=2274&sort=pricelow&page=1

Yes your first choice will work in your T61. Any 2.5" with 9.5mm height SATA drive should work without problems in your system, you will however only get SATA 1 performance.
    Hope this helps

  • Does XA52P Sata drive work with Nforce3 250 boards??

i have Msi's K8N Neo Platinum Nforce3 250gb board.  It has a native Sata controller on the chipset.  Does anybody know if Msi's new Sata drive will work on this baby??

I just bought the XA52P and it works fine with my K8N Neo Plat.
Here's another review of it, just incase anyone is interested.
    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=29&id=1207
Just sharing some info... the XA52P doesn't read CDs at full speed unless you hold down the power button for 5 seconds and the LED stays on.
The active panels are pretty thick and looks kinda out of place next to normal optical drives.

  • K8MM-V - how to get sata drive working in bios

    Hi,
I've attached a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 160GB sata drive to the pc now. On chip SATA is enabled. I get a message at staet up that I should press tab to enter setup. I do that.. Then I get a message that I only have one sata drive and therefore cannot create RAID. There are other options but I cannot enter anyof them (the create / delete array stuff on the left is dark blue). I can't even view status, or confirm any choice (or select any choice). It does show my sata drive below on Serial_CH0. But there is no array name (as I haven't been able to create one). Do I have to set the drive jumper settings or something? I don't know what's going on.. Also.. I ran the maxtor tools cd.. it didn't pick up the drive. Someone please help.
    Thanks,

    Specs:
    AMD Sempron 2800+
    Board: K8MM-V
512MB DDR 333mhz Ram (less 64 MB for VGA)
    OS: Winxp home sp2 , Win NT 4 sp6a
HD: Maxtor Diamondmax 80GB 7200rpm, Maxtor Diamondmax plus 9 160 GB SATA
    Lieton DVD Rom

You don't need to define an array, just install windows on it (use the driver disk too)
With 1 drive connected, it's working like a normal SATA controller.
I have the same here, you don't need to configure anything.
Except for maybe the boot-order in the BIOS, mine has two types of orders.
For the Harddisk you should have something like:
    1st Floppy -> 2nd CDrom -> 3th HD-0 or IDE-0 (whatever try call it in there)
Then you look at the Harddisk Boot priority, where is should say something like Sata-disk and second addin-card.
Not sure if your BIOS is the same, but that's how it works here.
Basicaly, if you have no PATA IDE drive's connected it should work by just connecting the drive.
And yes, the BIOS will continiu to mention there is no raid, don't bother about that as a single drive can't be a raid.

  • Will this external drive work??? HELP

    Hi all,
I wanted to know if there is any way that this hard drive works with OS X? I've read reviews that it doesnt work with Macs, but some websites state that its Mac-compatible.
    http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5239637
Anyone have this drive? Is there any way that i can reformat the drive or do something to it, so i can use on my mac?
    Thanks very much everyone.

I use a small USB drive from Maxtor, and it certainly
works as a bootable drive. You can boot from a USB
hard drive if you have an Intel Mac. I have done
    it.
    Daniel
Correct. It will boot from an Intel Mac.

  • Will this hard drive work with my macbook?

I have a late 2006 Core Duo Macbook. I was wondering if I could use this hard drive with my macbook, it's a 7200 rpm 200 gig hard drive. Btw I mean internal not external. Does the macbook have a limit on how big of a hard drive you can use? Would this hard drive work at 7200 rpm in the macbook?
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145160

    Hi.
The drive will work perfectly in your macbook. Two weeks ago i was also thinking about buying the Hitachi Travelstar 7k200.
But afterwards i bought this one:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136123
The WD Scorpio 250GB. Off course it´s not as fast as the Travelstar. But for me three things we´re quiet nice about this harddrive: the noise (it doesn´t make anyone) and the price (got it for 150 euro) and it consumes way less power (means better battery life).
    http://www.storagereview.com/WD2500BEVS.sr?page=0%2C7
BTW: It really doesn´t make any noise.
So just in case you´re still unsure whether to buy the Hitachi or anything else. But if you want the fastest notebook HD you can get today, buy the Hitachi.
Have a nice day and fun with your new HD!

  • Will new hard drive work?

One of my drives is starting to act up and I need to replace it. My Dual G4 manual says I can use 2 Ultra ATA 100 drives and 2 Ultra ATA 66 drives. It's apparent that drives have moved beyond these specs, I'm considering a Maxtor Diamond Max 10 300GB ATA-133 drive thats only $90 at Tigerdirect. Will this drive work, and will it suffer a performance hit being in only an ATA100 slot or ATA66 slot.
    Thanks
    Mac Twin G4 1GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Hi Kennet
the vast majority if not all ATA-133 drives are backwards compatible with ATA-100 and ATA-66 so it should work fine. There may be a small performance hit but not as much as the figures would suggest. 133MBps is the maximum theoretical transfer rate but most drives don't achieve anywhere near that in burst yet alone substained data transfer.
Depending on how you intend to use the new drive it may be quicker in practice on the ATA-66 bus (assuming you only have two drives) rather than sharing the ATA-100 bus with another drive.
    I hope this helps.

  • XA52P SATA drive works with RS480M2-IL

[I have been using XA52P Sata drive with Rs480M2-IL & it works great. Though it goes in PIO mode at times if I attach my Hitachi 160 GB SATA to Port 1 & XA52P to Port 2. So I've interchanged their port connection.
    My PC configurations:-
    winXpPro Sp2 on
    RS480 M2-IL
    Athlon 3200+
    512MB DDR 400 Single DIMM
    Hitachi 160 GB SATA
    XA52P Combo.
    Any suggestions are welcome
    [email protected]

    Thanx for replying,
I'm using Bios version 3.8, and although my drivers are not very latest but they surely are later than those supplied with the mobo. The Combo goes in PIO mode often when it tries to access some data CD when it has been attached to SATA 2 port.
I'm running 32 bit XP Pro and the controller mode is set to IDE controller.
