Will iPhoto and iDVD work on Yosemite from Snow Leopard

Having something from browsers (Firefox) trying to open a program I did not authorize (shut the computer down and saw the "open box" icon and asking if I want to abort or keep going, computer shut it down) or Gmail does not support my version of Safari anymore, worried about security if I use it.  So thinking of updating the operating system. I have a Mac Mini and fall into the parameters to upgrade.  Finding sketchy information on issues with iDVD or iPhoto when upgrading.  Am I causing issues with those programs if up go to Yosemite?  I know my Microsoft office won't work, but it is over 12 years old so I should probably  upgrade it anyway.  Also wondering if Garage Band will keep working.  Thanks.

In my opinion I would recommend purchasing an external hard drive that is the same capacity as your computer's hard drive. Then clone you computer's drive to the external drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
  5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
If you need to restore your old system, then boot the computer from the clone, erase the internal drive, and restore the clone:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
  1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
  2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
  3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
  4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
  5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
  6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external backup drive. Destination means the internal startup drive. Note that the Source and Destination are reversed.
To boot from the clone:
Boot Using OPTION key:
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
      "OPTION" key.
  3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
  4. Select the disk icon for the disk with the clone.
  5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • Will I lose iDVD if I upgrade from Snow Leopard to Mavericks?

I am getting ready to upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks, and I have a few questions on my MacBookPro.
    1) Is there a way to keep iDVD when I upgrade?
    2) How does Microsoft Office 2008 play with Mavericks, specifically Word and Entourage?
    3)  Is there any reason NOT to upgrade?  I have already done a complete backup using Time Machine.
    Lisa

    Carolyn,
Thank you for the answer.  Um, I am not sure what it said  . . . However, I did do more checking on exactly which model I have.  On the chart, the Model Identifier MacBookPro5,3 was listed, but not 5,4.
This is what hardware I have:
    Hardware Overview:
      Model Name: MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 1
      Total Number Of Cores: 2
      L2 Cache: 3 MB
      Memory: 4 GB
      Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
      Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
      SMC Version (system): 1.49f2
How do I tell what will and won't work well with Mavericks?  I don't know if 1) I should upgrade, and 2) what should I upgrade to, based on the information you listed in your tips.
Thanks for any help you can give!

  • Will Lion install correctly handle multiple accounts from Snow Leopard?

Will Lion install correctly handle multiple accounts from Snow Leopard? Will current settings, DOCS etc be carried over?

I found the solution to my problem after I upgraded and it lies with the X509 Anchors.
SOLUTION:  Go to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security-common.plist (it may be a hidden file) and change it to /Library/Preferences/com.apple.security-common.plist.bak.  This should remove the system calling to old outdated anchors and allow it to use the new security protocols under Lion's sandboxing feature.
It worked for me and mail runs fine.

  • Will I be able to upgrade Directly from Snow Leopard ro Mountain Lion

    Hello All!
Will I be able to upgrade Directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion without going through Lion?
    Thanks in advance

You have to upgrade Mac OS X Snow Leopard to Mac OS X Lion, Then Mac OS X Mountain Lion.
If You have Snow Leopard, then upgrading to Mac OS X Lion is only $29.99 via the Mac App's Store, a one time fee for all your Macs. I recommend that you download it to all your devices first before you actually run the installation process. Once you've upgraded to Mac OS X Lion, then upgrade to Mac OS X Mountain Lion for a one time fee of $19.99.
Mac OS X Mountain Lion will be available as a single software upgrade via the Mac App Store beginning in July 2012. The BEST PART is you only have to purchase it one time to upgrade all of your Macs. So its only like $50 bucks total for ALL your Macs to get both Lion and Mt Lion. Approximately, the same price it was when Snow Leopard's family pack came out for only up to 5 Macs. Except this time you get 2 upgrades for about the same cost for unlimited Macs compared to only 1 upgrade for up to 5 macs like before.

  • Importing Mail files and config to Yosemite from Snow Leopard

    Hello,
Can someone explain to me where i must copy my SNOW LEOPARD Mail files to on Yosemtie. I can't find the Mail file path on my new Yosemite Macbook pro
I really need my 40gb+ of mails from snow Leopard before i cant begin using this computer.
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library/Mail/V2.

  • What will change when I upgrade my Mac from Snow Leopard to Yosemite?

I have a 2008 IMAC that I upgraded to Snow Leopard. What changes can I expect if I upgrade to Yosemite?
My current browser is 5.1.10. I get messages that my browser is not current.

OS X Yosemite has got big changes respecting to any older OS X version, starting from the interface (it includes a flatter interface, getting rid of 3D). Then, as you are upgrading from Snow Leopard, note that PowerPC-based applications are not compatible, so remove or upgrade them before upgrading to Yosemite. You can check whether your applications are compatible in this website -> http://www.roaringapps.com
It is very important to make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading. Some users have reported performance problems after upgrading, so a backup would allow you to go back to Snow Leopard in case you do not like Yosemite.
Safari 8.0.2 is the most recent Safari version, included with OS X Yosemite, so you are using a very old Safari version. It will be updated automatically with the upgrade to Yosemite, so do not worry about that.

  • Will upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) affect the running of the installed 3rd party softwares/programs?

I have just received an email encouraging me to upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Currently I do have in my computer several 3rd party software and programs (from Adobestuff, finalcut Pro, MS Office, ILife etc.
Will upgrading to OS X Mavericks affect the running of these software /programs?  Will I need to also upgrade these softwares?

There may be issues with compatibilty, as with any OS upgrade. Snow leopard (10.6.N) includes a piece of software from Apple called Rosetta. This software allows older PowerPC applications to run on Intel based Macs. This software does not run on any OS X higher than the latest Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. You can see if you have any of programs that require Rosetta installed by bringing up the "System Information" application through spotlight (click on the magnifying glass icon on the upper right, type System Information in the search field and select the application thta is found).
Once in System Information select "Applications" under "Software" near the bottom of the list. Scroll through the list of applications and if any indicate that they are PowerPC based then they will not run under Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Will iMovies and iDVDs work on PC Computers?

I am planning to make some short instructional movies on iMovies and put them on a DVD with iDVD for use in my classroom [make that classrooms]. I was just wondering what format to export my movies in, given that I will be using them on a variety of PC computers at school i.e. which format is most likely to be compatible with the widest range of PC machines?
    thanks

    Hi
As unlecho writes - iDVD makes standard video-DVDs.
    To get best result possibly
    • Do not use "Share to iDVD" - in any iMovie version
    • Best result will be by using - iMovie HD6 and iDVD - Close iMovie and Import from within iDVD (alt. is FinalCut)
    • If You only have iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - Then "Share to Media Browser" and as Large (not HD or other res.)

  • Missing iPhoto files after time machine restore from Snow Leopard

My Snow Leopard machine HD failed the day after my new MacBook Air (Lion) arrived.  Migration assistant allowed me to use Time Machine to restore my iPhoto files from my external HD.  However, many of the photos are apparently gone, although the thumbnails remain (selecting the thumbnail results in a big exclamation point in a triangle).  I've tried repairing the iPhoto Library and updating the thumbnails, but still many photos can't be found.  I think I may have to fix the old machine, then try to restore that way, but would like to access the photos now.  Any suggestions?

Back up no matter what,  then
either  way with time machine and restore or
Target disc mode. You should be able to move the entire iPhoto Library

  • IPhoto and iDVD working together

I've just finished organizing about 500 photos in iPhoto 6. I wanted to export them directly to iDVD, but was unable to, so I exported them to a Quicktime movie and then into iDVD.
However, I want to add "titles" so we remember where we were, etc., and I don't know how to do it. Obviously, I could do it if I exported to iMovie, but I didn't see that option, and actually, the Quicktime to iDVD gives a nice slideshow effect that I like.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!
    susan

    Hello Susan,
you cannot directly export your photos/slideshow to iMovie. you can however
    1. export as QT movie, then import that into a new iMovie project
    2. create a new iMovie project and import your pictures from the "Photos" tab. by doing so you can apply all the same effects and transitions as in iMovie.
if you choose option 2, be aware that there seems to be a bug described in this thread by Karl Petersen:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2105598&#2105598
if you mainly work with photos you might want to have a look at a software that seems to be doing a very good job:
    Pictures to Movie

    hope this helps
