Will my 4-pin Firewire cable work?

I've jsut bought a new iMac and want to transfer data from my old one.
The old Mac is 24" Late 2006 model and has two different Firewire ports - I think one is 9 pin and the other 6 pin.
The new iMac has the the smaller 6 pin port.
I've just been to buy a suitable FW cable and have got a 4-pin one. (I'm at work and was unable to double-check the ports on the machine.
I understand that on a 6-pin cable, 2 of the pins are for power, not data, which suggests I don't need them for this data transfer.
Will this cable work? Will it even physically fit?
Thanks

You need a cable like:

You can find these at your local computer store, Radio Shack, Best Buy, or of course Amazon.

While holding the option key, click the  in the menu bar and select System Information. Select Firewire in the Hardware section and see if your camera shows up as a connected Firewire device. If not, then you have one of three basic problems:
         1. Defective Firewire cable
         2. Defective Firewire port on computer
         3. Defective Firewire port on camcorder
Rule out any of the above by trying a different cable, Firewire device (like a hard drive) or try your camcorder/cable on a different/friend's computer.
If you suspect a Firewire port problem on your computer, you can try resetting it by shutting down and disconnecting the power cable to the computer. Wait for 30 minutes and plug back in and startup. You can also try resetting Parameter RAM (PRAM) on the iMac. (Apple's Instructions for reseting PRAM)

  • 3 pin firewire cable converter

    Hello
I am looking for a way to convert my 3 pin firewire isight cable. I bought the camera in 08 and want to use it now but i need
a way to convert it to use it with my dell. Can anyone help please?

Firewire adapters come in all shapes and sizes.  Amazon is a good place to look at possibilities based on the two ends you have to connect - I suspect you need something like this example (standard disclaimer applies: I'm not advocating you purchase from Amazon specifically):
    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71xB21cPMxL._SL1500_.jpg
But once you have it electrically connected to your Dell, you may or may not have the software (and OS) capability to drive it... that will depend on the app you want to use it with.

  • To capture with Intensity HDMI, will I also need firewire cable?

I've got an Intensity card on the way and want to capture live video from a Canon HV20 to ProRes over a 10 meter HDMI cable.
    I noticed on the BlackMagic site that it says;
Device Control: None. Use FireWire if capturing from HDMI cameras.
Do I also need a 10 meter FireWire cable - or can I just tell FCP6 to capture what is heading its way from the HDMI cable?

You only need a Firewire connection if you want to control your camera/deck from within FCP. If you do not have a FireWire connection then you will have to start and stop the camera/deck manually. Just make sure that you select the appropriate input and output modes for the Intensity card in the Utilities panel.

  • Will a 4 pin to 6 pin FW cable work?

My new MBP is showing up today, but all I have to transfer files from my older MBP is firewire 400 cables. My local radio shack has a 4 pin to 6 pin adaptor. Will that work?
    Thanks

Just to build on what Niel indicated... There were two standard FW400 connectors. One was the larger elongated "D" shaped connector and one was the much smaller connector. The difference being that the larger connector had six pins and was able to provide power to devices connected to it. The smaller plug, with 4 pins, lacked the ability to provide power. It could only move data. Devices using the smaller firewire connector would need an alternative power source.
Then along came FW800. If you're not familiar with FW800, I can see how you may confuse that with the older FW400 4 pin connector, but they are not the same. FW800 actually uses 9 pins and is fully backwards compatible with FW400. As Niel indicated, you would need the 6pin to 9pin cable which will allow you to connect the 6pin FW400 to the 9pin FW800 on your MacBook Pro.

  • Will a firewire cable work with a mini display port?

I recently upgraded to a new Macbook Pro and I need to transfer my files from the older macbook pro.
Can I use a thunderbolt cable to transfer files from my 2008 Macbook Pro (using a mini display port) to my new Macbook Pro thunderbolt port? It would be great if this could work. Otherwise, I will have to return this (still unopened) cable for another option.
The older notebook is running SnowLeopard (10.6.8), and the new one is running the most recent version of Mountain Lion (10.8.2).
Any feedback or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thunderbolt was introduced in 2011.  So, while the ports looks the same, they are not functionally the same.  You'll need to use another interface (firewire, USB) to transfer files between the two computers.
Personally, I'd hold on to that cable though.  I never know when a cable's going to come in handy.  But that's just my personal preference, not shopping advice :-)

  • Will an old iPod "firewire" charger work for my iPad

I have an old Firewire wall charger that came with my first iPod (wht 20gb). It is a 12 watt .64Amp output.
Will this work with my iPad. The iPad comes with a 10 watt charger.
Will the extra wattage harm the iPad?

When the current goes through the wire to the dock connection on the edge of the ipad, the devices does not "know" the shape or configuration of the connection to power at the other end. Clearly, the ipad does not interface with a firewire DATA port. However, there is an adapter cable for ipad devices with three ends: dock (to device); USB (to computer for data); FireWire (to AC wall adapter for power).
It seems to me that the 12V 1.0A output of the old wall adapter should be able to charge the ipad. I do not have the three legged cable, but do have a ipod power adapter with FireWire only connection. Has anybody tried this alternative to the 10V output wall adapter intended for the ipad?

I'm trying to add the Pin It widget that Pinterest has.  After using their page (http://business.pinterest.com/widget-builder/#do_pin_it_button) to configure and build, here's the code that was generated for me to copy/paste:

Nothing appears right away in the iWeb tool, which I expected; but after publishing and trying to review it locally on my computer, still nothing appears.  Is this something I have to go ahead and upload live to be able to see if it worked?  Or will this code even work at all in iWeb?
    Thanks

  • External HD Firewire Cable Doesn't Fit?

Just got a new (well, refurbished) 24" iMac this week to replace my Powerbook G4. I had a Lacie 250GB external HD connected to my powerbook by 6-pin firewire cable, and planned to use this HD with my iMac as well. However, the cable won't fit in my iMac... it's the right shape, but won't go all the way into the port. If I reverse the cable (i.e. try the end usually in the HD), it will fit in the iMac, but not the hard drive. What's the difference between my Powerbook's port and that on the iMac? Has something changed? Do I need a new cable? Please help!

Ok, get this... in order to figure out what was different about the two ends of the 6-pin cable (which is supposed to be symmetrical), I looked directly into each end and saw that one looked "deeper". It appeared the gap between the pins went back farther in the end that easily connected with the HD and the iMac, while the other end had a plastic part between the pins... curious as I am at 12:30AM, I got a pushpin and was able to pry this plastic piece out (it fit perfectly around the contours of the pins, so I'm assuming it was supposed to be there or was a manufacturing element that should have been removed in assembly). Anyway, with this removed it works fine. Doubt anyone else will ever run into this same thing, but if so, hope this post helps.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV33 camcorder and it hooked to my iMac with the firewire cable but the iMac doesn't seem to recognize the camera.  The camera is set to VCR.  This particular model is not included in the supported camera list for ilife but seems to be compatible from everything else I have read.  Anyone have any ideas as to what to do??

To import from this camera, you need a Firewire cable.
Sony's name for FireWire is i.Link, so that is where you need to plug in.
If you have a relatively new Mac, it will have Firewire 800. You will need a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable. You can find them inexpensively at www.monoprice.com.  If you have an older iMac, it may have Firewire 400 (or it may have both). In this case, you need the  6 pin to 4 pin Firewire cable. Some companies sell adapters that will convert a 6 pin to 4 pin cable to 9 pins. Avoid these. They do not work.
