Will Thunderbolt allow multiple external displays?

The news about Thunderbolt mentions the ability to "daisy chain" up to 6 devices to the port.
Have there been any details released about the potential of driving multiple external monitors with Thunderbolt?
I have two 24" monitors that I'd like to use instead of the laptop display, but the Mini-Displayport only allows for a single external monitor (and yes, I've tried using both Dell's Multi Monitor Hub and Matrox's DualHead2Go devices with no luck).

What about this on the thunderbolt/mbp page?
http://www.apple.com/au/macbookpro/performance.html
"Thunderbolt technology has arrived — and MacBook Pro is the first notebook to have it. Now one connection carries both DisplayPort and PCI Express. With two 10-Gbps data channels, you can transfer data more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800. And don’t worry about a single drive or peripheral tying up the Thunderbolt port: You can daisy-chain up to six devices, +*including up to two high-resolution displays.3*+ So with one tiny, streamlined port, you get lightning-fast transfer speeds and huge expansion capabilities."
The little *3 at the bottom of the page in fine print says:
"+The 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro support two displays; the 13-inch MacBook Pro supports one display.+"
How do we connect two displays, though?

  • T530i multiple external displays without dock

    Hello all,
I'm having an issue trying to set up a T530i with Intel HD Graphics 400 with multiple external displays.  I have searched the forum and not found anything similar, it looks like most people are using docking stations with their configurations which I don't have.  Here is what I'm trying to set up.
    External + External + Laptop
Currently, I am running a VGA splitter to the External displays.  This works as expected, replicating the display on both externals, as Windows only sees the connection as one external display.
My goal and endstate is to have the system recognize and operate as 3 seperate displays (extended desktop).
In my attempt to achieve this, I obtained a Mini Display Port to VGA converter, plugging one external display into each port (VGA and Mini Display port converted to VGA) the system now recognizes the a 3rd monitor, but it will not allow me to extend (or even activate it). I am only able to run 2 screens simultaneously.  Whenever I try to activate the 3rd display ("extend desktop to this display") when I hit apply, I get an error message stating "unable to save display settings".
Is there a solution to this where I will be able to run all 3 displays? The only thing I have not tried is using a splitter on the Mini Display port as I do not currently have access to one.

    Hi Bret,
This is a user-to-user discussion forum so your frustration needs to be directed at Apple. Unfortunately, there's no word from Apple directly as to why they do not offer multiple monitor support (on their website that I could find).
Regrettably, the next best thing is to reach out via the appropriate feedback section:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
I'm with you, though, the option would be nice.

  • ITunes movie purchases will not play on external display - HDCP auth error

    Hello,
Well, I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a storm over this one already but I expect there will be.
Just got a new MacBook last week and finally found a mini Display Port -> VGA adapter so i could use my 19" external display. I rented a movie from the iTunes store yesterday and when I tried to play it on my external display, it gave me a warning/error that the display was 'not an authorized HDCP display' and it would not play. Plays fine on the small MacBook screen, just nothing external. To make it even worse, i tried all the movies that I have purchased from the iTunes store with the same result... NONE of them will play on anything but the MacBook's small 13" screen. This is crazy unacceptable.
Has anyone else run into this yet or have any ideas of something I may be overlooking in order to get purchased movies to play on an external display?
    Thanks!

Hm, how many Apple users did I see scorning Vista and its content protection madness; agreeing with Peter Gutmann's searing critique of Vista[1].
And here we are now with Apple users who have spent thousands of dollars on Apple hardware (30" Cinema displays are not cheap!), buying films legitimately through Apple's store only to find themselves screwed when they just want to watch the film!!!
The deeper questions we should be asking is if Apple have done anything to enable end-to-end encryption. Vista made significant sacrifices to efficiency and stability to get there, what has Apple done to our OS? We have no technical details on this yet, but wouldn't Apple be improperly implementing HDCP (in spirit if not letter) if it didn't force end-to-end encryption from source to final destination, most of which has to go through your system?

  • Lightroom 2.0 will not allow multiple image keywording

Lightroom 2.0 intermittently will not allow me to add keywords to multiple image selections (two or more images selected). The first image selected gets keyworded and the rest do not. Is anyone else having this problem, and if so, have you been able to find a fix.
    Thanks.
    Steve

Thanks, that took care of the problem.
I missed that in the Lightroom "manual".

  • T440 will not operate 3 external displays

I'm using a T440 model 20B7000XUK and I'm connected to a Thinkpad Pro Dock I have 3 external displays connected as follows:
Lenovo Display LEN L193pC connected by DVI
Lenovo Display LEN L192p connected by VGA
Lenovo Display LEN LT2252pwA connected by DP
the DVI display will not work when the DP display is connected. is there any way to get all three displays working?

I have tried to connect it to my TV with my mini display port to DVI and a DVI to S-video and nothing...
I don't know what your DVI to S-Video adapter looks like, but unless it's a boxy converter device, it won't work. You need a converter box to create an analog S-Video signal from a Mini-Displayport's digital-only output. The converter boxes I'm familiar with require VGA input rather than DVI input, but there may be others I don't know about. If you are using a simple DVI -> S-Video adapter such as the one offered on the Apple Store, it won't work with your MBP to deliver S-Video to a TV set.
...and I have tried to connect to a projector at my work with the mini dislay to DVI cable to VGA and nothing.
A MDP > VGA adapter and a standard VGA cable are what you need for that. Converting first to DVI and then from DVI to VGA makes the setup unnecessarily complicated and may be the reason why it doesn't work for you.

  • Configuring Multiple External Displays EliteBook 8470P

I have an EliteBook 8470P with the AMD Radeon 7570M display adapter.  I am looking to use to external displays as well as the laptop display.  Can I use both the VGA and Display port outputs to accomplish this without purchasing a docking station?  And are there any settings that I need to change to do this?

    Max,
Simply plug in two monitors out of the dock's DP and DVI port.
The third display connects to the laptop's DP port.
    Best of luck, and enjoy!

  • Crystal reports 2008  will not allow multiple exports in a row

I recently had service pack 3 and fix pack 3.3 updated to my system ( crystal 2008) to help correct a issue with mapi not populating addresses from outlook when trying to export a report.  I have a new issue. - sort of???
Now when I try to export multiple reports in a row I still have the same issue. I can send 1 report out. But if i try to send another report out i have the same issue that I had with  mapi not populating the addresses field from outlook.
To get past this I shut down crystal and then bring it back up and I can send (ONE) report again before the same thing happens. Does anyone know if there is  fix for this issue?

Im not sure I agree with you designation that this report should be in the report DESIGN forum.  I
My problem has nothing to do with report design in my OP.  The MAPI function (in crystal reports itself) will not populate addresses once I export 1 report.  When I try to export a second report that is when it quits works.  This is basically the same problem that a hot fix or fix pack corrected but now instead of now working at all. I can only export 1 report before the same mapi issue happens????

  • Microsoft Update KB2670838 will not allow PDFs to display in Internet Explorer 11 and 10

    HI all,
When upgrading to Internet Explorer 11/10 in Windows 7 Enterprise, there is an update KB2670838. It halts the operations of PDF's into the browser, instead it throws up a blank page with a small box thats crossed and it wont let them show up in Adobe Acrobat/Reader.This update is a requirement for Internet Explorer 11 to install and while wed love to get on the latest version, we just cant with this problem. Internet Explorer 9 displays PDFs in broswer just fine.
We have tried in Adobe to make it so it will not display in broswer by unchecking that option, but it still does not display. reading up on it there is a registry hack that helps alivate this but it is only for Windows 8/8.1.
Any tips/solutions/Help for this would be appreciated for this.
    Thanks!

The solution is http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2716529 but as you write, the "fixit" is only for Windows 8.
To apply it on Windows 7, download, unzip, then run the attached registry script.

  • Thunderbolt to HDMI external display: no signal

I have a mac air 11" late 2011 and can't mirror display with a thunderbolt to hdmi cable. I tried on my sony bravia KDL46EX705. The display is detected, it shows SONY TV, but no image on the tv  I've tried resolutions, Hz, and a couple of other stuff at the tv that did no work out. all softs and firms are uptaded. Tried also on a Phillips 42" and the same. I've bought both mac and cable at the 5th av apple store.

    Hi,
I have found a related issue - after sleep it appears to go back to its "default" of the (speaker-less) Dell display connected via DP.
OS X Seems to understand there is no sound output (controls are greyed out), but still keeps using this as default. Never had this issue under Mavericks.
    Any thoughts?

  • Multiple external displays for X220 + ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Station

I have ThinkPad X220 [PN#4290HT6] and will plan to use 02 external monitors.
My plan is to buy ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Station and 02 external monitors.
Is ThinkPad Series 3 Docking Station working with 02 external monitors by my X220?
Which ports of Docking to be used [VGA or DVI]?
    Thank you!!

I would be verry happy if you could post the results of your check (the "amperage" especially).
Yes, I am aware that there are 2 versions (with and without eSATA). The one I have ordered is unfortunately the newer one, with USB 3.0 (no eSATA). But from reading other threads I know that the eSATA port on the docking station is limited - it is not powered (eSATA-p, but plain eSATA), in contrast to the laptop port, so I will not be missing this feature so much as I thought I would. I will still connect directly to the laptop port instead. Why?
I'm using one-cable connection (powered eSATA cable eSATA-p connector to normal SATA drive connector) to connect external 2.5" drive to easily boot the alternative system. Great solution, by the way, and very cheap, cost of ca. 10EUR incl shipment (Delock is the only brand I've found that produces such cables). I never liked the need to have additional power adapter or USB power connection for SATA connection - too many cables for me. So initially I was looking for the older version of docking station. But after reading about the above limitations of eSATA port on docking station, I gave up, because I would still need additional USB cable to power it up when connecting to the docking station.
Unfortunaltely, all W-series compatible docking stations are very rare on the used market here in Poland, so I didn't have too many possibilities to choose from.

Hopefully, you'll find the content on this website to be of quality and reflection. This website may be found to be more personal since I will offer my experiences. As someone with dyslexia (commonly associated with other disorders) and ADD I'm able to offer insight and thoughts. Please note that I recognize with ADD not ADHD. There is a huge difference! A person affliced with ADD is likely a more difficult diagnosis than ADHD, since the hyperactivity, while possiblity mild or subtle, is not difficult to miss! </p>

Many people have gone through many years of their life before &quot;that large break through&quot; experience, in which, a condition, unidentified becomes highlighted. The defining moment came from years of experiences and hard work. Through reflection and regarding a mention of ADHD/ADD during highschool years by authority, a change was made for the better. The defining moments of ADD during my lifetime  regarded  an inablity to sit beyond one hour, restless leg syndrome, a lower GPA despite quick wits and daily activities constantly in line with minimal attention requirements. Also, to mention, were assessment scores!</p>

  • Will Thunderbolt support 2 external monitors?

I would like to connect the 2 external 24" monitors via the HDMI output from the Thunderbold port? Can this be done?

    Hi Terry!
It depends what MacBook Pro you have. 13" models support only one monitor while the 15" amd the 17" support two.
    Hope this helps!
