Will upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) affect the running of the installed 3rd party softwares/programs?

I have just received an email encouraging me to upgrading on to OS X Mavericks (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8). Currently I do have in my computer several 3rd party software and programs (from Adobestuff, finalcut Pro, MS Office, ILife etc.
Will upgrading to OS X Mavericks affect the running of these software /programs? Will I need to also upgrade these softwares?

There may be issues with compatibilty, as with any OS upgrade. Snow leopard (10.6.N) includes a piece of software from Apple called Rosetta. This software allows older PowerPC applications to run on Intel based Macs. This software does not run on any OS X higher than the latest Snow Leopard, 10.6.8. You can see if you have any of programs that require Rosetta installed by bringing up the "System Information" application through spotlight (click on the magnifying glass icon on the upper right, type System Information in the search field and select the application thta is found).
Once in System Information select "Applications" under "Software" near the bottom of the list. Scroll through the list of applications and if any indicate that they are PowerPC based then they will not run under Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks.

Only if you have Office 2008 or 2011. Older Office versions are PowerPC apps, so they no longer work with Mavericks.
If you are running Office 2008 or 2011, open any Office app, go to Help menu (in the menu bar) > Check for Updates, and install the latest version.
If you are using an older Office version, uninstall it and install another application:
Upgrade to Office 2008 or 2011 by buying it from the Microsoft website.
Install Apple iWork applications after upgrading to OS X Mavericks.
Install LibreOffice > http://www.libreoffice.org.
Remember to make a backup of your files with Time Machine before upgrading.

You would reinstall 10.6 using your installation DVD.

The only reason I upgraded to Mavericks was because my Snow Leopard OS was 32 bit, which I was told would support only 4GB of RAM.
That wasn't quite right. You can put in as much RAM as your Mac's hardware supports. The division is in the apps themselves. A 32 bit app can't use more than 4 GB or RAM. A 64 bit app can use much more.
For example, as a 32 bit only version, Photoshop CS3 can't use more 4GB of RAM, no matter how much you actually have installed. CS4 or later can use all the RAM you want to throw at it.

Hi, I am upgrading to Mavericks from Snow Leopard and after I downloaded the OS X from App Store, my MacBook Pro restarted automatically but unfortunately I am stuck in a grey screen with the apple icon in the middle and with the loading wheel turning underneath the apple. if Mavericks installed successfully, then it should have created a recovery partition on your internal drive. Are you able to hold down a Command key and the R key while booting, to see if it starts into the recovery partition? If that doesn’t work, then you’ll need to use the original model-specific grey installation DVDs that came in the box with your MacBook Pro. Put the disc marked “Mac OS X Install DVD” into your internal SuperDrive, and reboot while holding down the C key. You’ll then be able to run the DVD’s Disk Utility command to “verify” your internal drive.

The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They also have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the minimum. I now have 6GB installed on a machine supposedly limited to 4 GB.

Unable to update to OS X Maverick from Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have 648GB available on my MAC HD but when I go to install I get error that I need 2 GB free and 8 GB available. Does the AppStore install some where other than the MAC Hard Drive on my imac?

The reference is to RAM. You need at least 2 GBs of memory installed.

Prevent shockwave player from trying to install 3rd party software?

I am a sysadmin for a relatively small-ish enterprise (around 50-ish PCs). We have scripts which push out shockwave player to all our systems but when a user loads a page which requires shockwave, they get a UAC prompt because the player is trying to install 3rd party software (usually Google Chrome browser). How do I stop this from happening? Is there a command line argument I can set (preferable method) or some other centrally-managed method for turning this off? Thanks in advance.

I guess I am not explaining myself very well.
I am currently using the EXE full installer from the distribution page. The installation works very well and I can get it to run in "silent" mode to avoid interaction with the user. Once the installation finishes, and I load a web page which requires Shockwave player, I get prompted at that point to download/install Chrome. That is the part I would like to know if it's possible to stop, because all our users are getting UAC prompts and it's always because Shockwave wants to run some installer after loading. I had hoped that going to the distribution version (as opposed to the straight download from the Adobe.com home page) would resolve this but they seem to be the same version, which makes me wonder why I bothered to sign up for it in the first place.

I am so sorry for not including my computer information, I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mavericks. I have an I-Mac   3.2 GHZ Intel Core 13 processor, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3---Now I am constantly getting the spinning disk when I try and do the things I used to do without problems. Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
     Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
     COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
     computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
     screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
     Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
     Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).

I own a black Macbook Pro and am currently running Snow Leopard. I've maxed my RAM to 4 GB and processing to 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, but when I went to install Mavericks from this website, it said that it can't be installed on this computer. Does anyone know why? Is my computer too old?

I think mine is called the early 2009 Mini, a similar generation, and I'm running latest and greatest Mavericks:

The first thing that came to my mind was that I also might have seen that message but proceeded anyway because I could. Today blocks are set up to warn consumers off because they'll think features like ThunderBolt and LIghtfoot are available on their machines just because they saw it on TV. I'd be disappointed too if it turns out I could upgrade everything I needed but there was some system gestalt thingy that wouldn't let the installer proceed.
So what was a black MacBook Pro originally? Wiki says they started as Core Duo and moved up to Core 2 Duo and 8GB RAM OEM, only addressing 4GB, so I imagine there's trouble with Mavericks trying more addresses on machines that don't have them available?
I would expect to move from Snow Leopard, to Lion (to Mountain Lion), and to Mavericks out of hand, because they shipped that way new before the air style took over. Do you have 160GB boot drive, at least room enough to copy the whole thing down? Also, something in the middle was a paid upgrade, so is the Mavericks blocked by the fact nobody is allowed to jump that far ahead past a paid jump?

Normally what happens is that each of the software vendors are testing their products on Lion already. If they find some problem running under Lion they have the time make the fixes before Lion goes to the public.
You can check the vendor sites to see if they have updates for Lion when the public release is closer. You'll probably find that most software is ok as is.
Upgrades will leave your software and data intact.

Upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard Problems

I am upgrading my MacBook Pro, 13" late 2011, currently running Snow Leopard OS X v10.6.8. I have tried to download Mavericks multiple times with no success. What should I do to upgrade properly?
I have tried cancelling the download and rebooting my computer with no luck. I also tried hooking my computer up to an ethernet cable in case it was the speed of the internet, with no luck. The icon on my dashboard shows a bar with about half of the progress bar filled then goes no further. I left my computer plugged in OVER NIGHT and the prgoess bar did not move at all, so clearly it isn't downloading. In the Apps Store, Mavericks does not show up in purchases, but yet when I look at Mavericks in the Apps Store it says that Mavericks is downloading.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I just want the new running system with no problems. I saw something about rebooting my computer in safe-mode, but that makes me nervous because I just had a problem with my hard drive, and had to have my hard drive cable replaced about a month ago..

The following may or may not help (it won't do any harm), but I recall similar problems back with Lion when this worked in some cases.
If you have any incomplete downloads of Mavericks lurking about, move them to the trash.
Open Terminal, paste this line in
defaults write com.apple.appstore ShowDebugMenu -bool true
and hit 'return'. Restart the App Store. You'll now see a new menu item in the menu bar called 'Debug'. Click it and choose 'Reset Application' (no, you will not lose any purchases or anything else, this is just a local reset on your machine. You might as well do 'Clear cookies' for good measure, though the reset should do that as well).
Restart the mac for good measure, and try to download again.
(nb: if your upgrade to 10.9 is successful, the 'debug' menu will disappear on its own. If it's not, and you want to make it go away, just use the same command as above but change 'true' to 'false'.)
