Windows 2012 answer file and DVD drive letter

Hi
my question is about applying unattend XML file into a Wim file. I have read other thread here but still I  can't get it to work. so here is the situation:
I have installed windows 2012  then I have SYSPREPed it and then I created a WIM file with DISM tool and then I have a very simple answer file. I use DISM to mount the image and then use DISM /apply-unattend to push my answerfile into my WIM file. now
the issue is, when I load this image into a VM using DISM tool, everything goes fine and when the server comes up for the first time I see the language setting page asking for "Country or region" and "App Language" and "keyboard layout"
when I hit next , it asks for license agreement and after confirming that one, I can login to windows. How I can hide those 2 windows. my small answer files is :
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

can somebody please let me know what am I doing wrong? I was assuming after applying unattanded xml file, when I do DISM /apply-image it gonna use my answer file....
I have one more question as well:
in 2012, I change DVD drive letter from D to Z and then I sysprep it. in target VM when I load my image, DVD drive is D again.
I guess when sysprep generalize everything, DVD drive get detected again and windows assign first available letter to it. my second question is : is there any way to make drive letter setting stays the same in target computer?
Your help is much appreciated!

Hi,
Where did you put the answer file? Windows has several places to check the files, you can refer to the following article, notice Implicit Answer File Search Order.
Windows Setup Automation Overview
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/hh824950.aspx
For DVD drive letter, I think you can assign it via a script with diskpart command:
Assign, change, or remove a drive letter
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-in/library/cc757491(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_CMD
Include a Custom Script in a Windows PE Image

Hope this helps.

  • Installing Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 using ISOs, Answer Files and Driver files over PXE boot

    I have a validation lab that uses Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 on several completely different systems. I am looking for an easy way for the techs to PXE boot from a 2012 Server, select the OS to install and have the OS installed with drivers so when they come back
    to the system it has the OS installed with no Bangs in Device Manager.
    I have done this in the past (7-8 years ago) and it was fairly easy. Now from what I read it appears I have to create "Image" files for each system type? I hope I am misreading this because that method is counter-productive to create 10 different
    images for 10 different systems.
    I thought I used WDS and AIK on a 2K3 Server but I don't remember.
    Is there a method/tool to install the operating systems as I described above using original OS ISOs, unattended answer files and driver files? WDS or SCCM? AM I misreading how it works?

    EDIT: RESOLVED
    For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
    Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
    Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

Same with the dvd drive. Other then no able to write to the dvd/cd drive, everything else is perfect. But that is not good enough...

  • Need help booting from DMG file without DVD drive

    okay so i have 6 computers with me right now. i need to use one that has a dvd drive to install it on a comp that doesnt via firewire.
    1- macbook with superdrive and os 10.5 (cant even open tiger install because its a new macbook
    2-iBook g4 with DVD drive BUT the firewire port is broken
    3-iBook g3 (one that needs tiger but only has a cd drive)
    4-ibook g3 (without dvd drive)
    5-powerbook g4 with dvd drive and firewire (for some reason will not read the tiger discs i just burned, even though ive already used them on the ibook g4
    6-mac pro with firewire and dvd drive, but the dvd drive is broken.
    so seems to me, every computer i have has a weakness for exactly what i need. what i need to know now is if i can boot the powerbook g4 from a DMG file of tiger install disc 1 and install is to the target ibook through firewire. if you have any suggestions on what i should try with the supplies mentioned above, please inform me. thanks!

    what i need to know now is if i can boot the powerbook g4 from a DMG file of tiger install disc 1 and install is to the target ibook through firewire.
    You can't unless the PowerBook is running Mac OS X Server, in which case the NetInstall feature can be used.

    My Father-In-Law is running into the same issue. He can use his nano fine, but he can't see his CD drive. He has discovered that if iTunes is open, then he can access the drive, but if iTunes isn't launched, the drive is not recognized.
    He already had an existing version of iTunes on his laptop (it's an HP btw), and his problems started after he used the install CD that came with the iPod.
    We are going to try and uninstall iTunes and then just download it off Apple's website to see if that corrects the problem.

  • CD-ROM and DVD drives recognised but not working after iTunes uninstall

    I recently uninstalled iTunes. The CD-ROM and DVD drives are present on "My Computer" but will not recognise when a CD or DVD is inserted into the drive.

  • Windows 7 answer file deployment and iscsi boot

    Hi, I am trying to prepare an image with windows7 Ent that has been installed, went through "audit" and then shutdown with:
    OOBE+Generalize+Shutdown
    So that I can clone this image and the next time it boots, it will use answer file to customize, join domain etc.
    The complication to this - is that I am using iscsi boot for my image, and working within Vmware ESX.
    I can install Windows without any issues, get the drivers properly working, reboot and OOBE on the same machine - no issues.
    The problems come when I clone the VM and the only part that changes (that I think really matters) is the mac address of the network card. The new clone when it comes up after the OOBE reboot hangs for about 10min and then proceeds without joining to domain.
    Using Panter logs and network traces - I saw that the domain join command was timing out and in fact no traffic was being sent to the DC. So the network was not up. The rest of the answer file customization works fine.
    As a test I brought up this new clone (with new mac) in Audit mode - and Windows reported that it found and installed drivers for new device - VMXNET3 Driver 2. So in fact it does consider this a new device.
    Even though it iscsi boots from this new network card - later in process its unable to use it until driver is reinstalled.
    In my answer file I tried with and without below portion but it didnt help:
    <settings pass="generalize">
            <component>
                <DoNotCleanUpNonPresentDevices>true</DoNotCleanUpNonPresentDevices>
                <PersistAllDeviceInstalls>true</PersistAllDeviceInstalls>
            </component>
        </settings>
    I also tried with E1000 NIC, but couldnt get windows to boot properly after the cdrom installation part.
    So my question - is my only option to use workarounds like post OOBE scripts for join etc?
    Is it possible to let Windows boot and then initiate an extra reboot once the driver was installed and then allow it to go to Customize phase?
    thank you!

    Hi,
    This might be caused by the iscsi boot.
    iSCSI Boot is supported only on Windows Server. Client versions of Windows, such as Windows Vista® or Windows 7, are not supported.

  • Ipod and dvd drive on windows pc

    help !!!!!! my daughter has an i pod. i am running windows vista home premium, when i first got it and down loaded i had nothing but problems kept wiping out my dvd drive. does anyone know how to get tunes on to her ipod without problems. or has this problem been resolved in vista. any help please leave a message.
    thanx alot.

    You want to copy files from your iMac to the PC's DVD drive? If so I don't think that woudl work. The purpose of Remote Disc in OS X is to provide a method for Macs without DVD drives to install software that is only available on CD or DVD from a machine with a DVD drive. If you want to write files from your iMac to DVD then you will need to purchase a USB DVD drive and connect it to your iMac.

  • Bootcamp woes, unable to boot from USB and DVD drive reads all DVDs blank

    My partner and I are completely unable to install Windows using Bootcamp.  We have tried dozens of solutions on the internet.
    2011 iMac (purchased in by me and my partner 2012) reads all DVDs as blank.  We have (hilariously) another Mac, an MBP, that has the same exact problem.  You'd almost think "Superdrives" eventually just stop working or something.  So obviously we can't install Bootcamp on the iMac using a DVD.
    But what about a USB stick?  Well after modifying the plist file and writing a bootable Windows USB and trying to boot from that, we were greeted with the mysterious and apparently yet-unsolved "no bootable device" error.
    So our iMac can't boot from USB drives or read DVDs.  We've only owned it for two years.  And this is the second Mac we've owned where the Superdrive has died.  And we don't even use DVDs more than like once a year.
    But anyway, can someone tell me what we're supposed to do if we want to install Windows aside from throwing money away to buy another Superdrive that is probably going to die again in a year?  Maybe a way to make our mac boot from our USB stick?  Something?
    Thanks.

     Should you have another drive with a MBR, use it to rule that issue out. Alternatively create a GPT on the flash drive and try to boot from it.
     What options are there for the usb controller/boot priorities/order/options? Does the laptop recognize the usb flash when already in bios setup? Should there be any form of choosing the device to boot, use that with the flash drive in the socket, then switch it with the external drive.
