  • Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation error on windows 8.1 while installing SQL server 2008

    Hi,
I am getting the error "Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation" on windows 8.1 while installing
    SQL server 2008.
The specific error is The error is Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation."
    at stepSqlBrowserConfigAction_install_ConfigNonRC_Cpu32 .
I have tried everything from copying to the C drive. I am the admin on the machine. I also checked access in registry. It already has acesss to HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WMI\security
Can someone comment on how to resolve this issue. I also tried NT
AUTHORITY\SYSTEM but getting the same error.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello,
Please note that SQL Server 2008 requires Service Pack 3 (SP3) to make it compatible with
Windows 8.1. Please perform an slipstream installation of SQL Server 2008 + SP3:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955392
If it fails again, please share with us the Summary.txt log file and the details.txt log file. The following article
may help you locate those files on disk::
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(v=sql.100).aspx
    Hope this helps.

  • Apply monthly Windows 2008 r2 updates within SQL Server 2008 cluster

Hello is applying Windows updates within 2 node SQL Server 2008 cluster (active-passive) as simple as download/install the windows update on the passive node, then failover, then apply on other node, and then fail back over ?...or are there other needed/recommended
    steps ?  Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply Shanky_621 much appreciated.
In your link provided http://support.microsoft.com/kb/174799 it looks like the steps order is slightly different from this link of
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731291.aspx which mentions...
"...where the recommended sequence is to move all services and applications off of the node, pause the node, then apply software updates to the node."
...does it matter which is done first ('Pause' or 'move Services/Application') or can I simply go to the Passive node (say 'B' where there are no Services or Applications currently on it), 'Pause' it, apply the Windows updates, then 'Resume' it, &
    reboot ?

  • Are there any differences between Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2 that might impact TFS or SQL server required for TFS?

    Hi,
In the interest of just getting started and learning the basics of setting up TFS, I previously setup an IDE using a large workstation running Windows 8.  I set up the required servers for TFS using VM's through Hyper-V.  I am now transferring
everything to a new and separate physical server.
My question stems from a problem I had when I originally setup the TFS system the 1st time.  I couldn't get SQL server to work using the Server 2012 R2 download from the subscription center.  When I used Server 2012, it worked, so I proceeded that
    way just to get going.
So now I'm setting things up anew on a new physical box, I want to ask up front, is there some difference in the R2 version that causes problems with either TFS or SQL server, or was there likely some oversight on my part when I did things the 1st time?
As an addendum to my question, I always assumed R2 merely means the Server software has progressed to a refined state and is ready for wide distribution and easy setup.  I assumed that there are no differences between the Standard version and the R2
    version.  Is that understanding correct?
    Thanks.

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for your response.  That's a great link.  I don't recall seeing a page that is so clear and easy to read back when I was doing this the 1st time, but I probably just missed it.  That helps.
I am/was using TFS2013 and VS2013.  As I recall, my problem was getting SQL Server to work, but I thought asking this question on this forum was wiser because I figured everyone using TFS would be well familiar with these issues.
At any rate, it seems as though TFS2013 is fine with Server 2012 standard or R2.
I was using SQL Server 2012, and it also seems as though it works on R2:
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506(v=sql.110).aspx
Anyway, thanks for your support.  I'll be trying this again and we'll see.

  • Windows Server 2012 Essentials and Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Standard Core Edition

Our company is planning to buy Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials edition (Volume license) and install it on Citrix Xenserver based virtual machine with 4 virtual processor cores. Can we install Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Standard Core Edition (2 licenses

you can install SQL Server Standard 2014/2012 on the Essentials Windows Server but without Server core Installation while installing SQL Server 2014 is supported on the Server Core mode of the following editions of Windows Server:

  • DSC, SQL Server 2012 Enterprise sp2 x64, SQL Server Failover Cluster Install not succeeding

Summary: DSC fails to fully install the SQL Server 2012 Failover Cluster, but the identical code snippet below run in powershell ise with administrator credentials works perfectly as does running the SQL server install interface.
In order to develop DSC configurations, I have set up a Windows Server 2012 R2 failover cluster in VMware Workstation v10 consisting of 3 nodes.  All have the same Windows Server 2012 version and have been fully patched via Microsoft Updates.
The cluster properly fails over on command and the cluster validates.  Powershell 4.0 is being used as installed in windows.
    PDC
    Node1
    Node2
The DSC script builds up the parameters to setup.exe for SQL Server.  Here is the cmd that gets built...
    $cmd2 = "C:\SOFTWARE\SQL\Setup.exe /Q /ACTION=InstallFailoverCluster /INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER /INSTANCEID=MSSQLSERVER /IACCEPTSQLSERVERLICENSETERMS /UpdateEnabled=false /IndicateProgress=false /FEATURES=SQLEngine,FullText,SSMS,ADV_SSMS,BIDS,IS,BC,CONN,BOL /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=password#1 /SQLSVCACCOUNT=SAASLAB1\sql_services /SQLSVCPASSWORD=password#1 /SQLSYSADMINACCOUNTS=`"SAASLAB1\sql_admin`" `"SAASLAB1\sql_services`" `"SAASLAB1\cubara01`" /AGTSVCACCOUNT=SAASLAB1\sql_services /AGTSVCPASSWORD=password#1 /ISSVCACCOUNT=SAASLAB1\sql_services /ISSVCPASSWORD=password#1 /ISSVCSTARTUPTYPE=Automatic /FAILOVERCLUSTERDISKS=MountRoot /FAILOVERCLUSTERGROUP='SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER)' /FAILOVERCLUSTERNETWORKNAME=SQLClusterLab1 /FAILOVERCLUSTERIPADDRESSES=`"IPv4;192.168.100.15;LAN;255.255.255.0`" /INSTALLSQLDATADIR=M:\SAN\SQLData\MSSQLSERVER /SQLUSERDBDIR=M:\SAN\SQLData\MSSQLSERVER /SQLUSERDBLOGDIR=M:\SAN\SQLLogs\MSSQLSERVER /SQLTEMPDBDIR=M:\SAN\SQLTempDB\MSSQLSERVER /SQLTEMPDBLOGDIR=M:\SAN\SQLTempDB\MSSQLSERVER /SQLBACKUPDIR=M:\SAN\Backups\MSSQLSERVER > C:\Logs\sqlInstall-log.txt "
    Invoke-Expression $cmd2
When I run this specific command in Powershell ISE running as administrator, logged in as domain account that is in the Node1's administrators group and has domain administrative authority, it works perfectly fine and sets up the initial node properly.
When I use the EXACT SAME code above pasted into my custom DSC resource, as a test with a known successful install, run with the same user as above, it does NOT completely install the cluster properly.  It still installs 17 applications
related to SQL Server and seems to properly configure everything except the cluster.  The Failover Cluster Manager shows that the SQL Server Role will not come on line and the SQL Server Agent Role is not created.
The code is run on Node1 so the setup folder is local to Node1.
The ConfigurationFile.ini files for the two types of installs are identical.
    Summary.txt does have issues..
    Feature:                       Database Engine Services
Status:                        Failed: see logs for details
Reason for failure:            An error occurred during the setup process of the feature.
Next Step:                     Use the following information to resolve the error, uninstall this feature, and then run the setup process again.
Component name:                SQL Server Database Engine Services Instance Features
      Component error code:          0x86D8003A
Error description:             The cluster resource 'SQL Server' could not be brought online.  Error: There was a failure to call cluster code from a provider. Exception message: Generic
failure . Status code: 5023. Description: The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.  .
It feels like this is a security issue with DSC or an issue with the setup in SQL Server, but please note I have granted administrators group and domain administrators authority.  The nodes were built with the same login.  Windows firewall
    is completely disabled.
Please let me know if any more detail is required.

    Hi Lydia,
Thanks for your interest and help.
I tried "Option 3 (recommended)" and that did not help.
The issue I encounter with the fail-over cluster only occurs when trying to install with DSC!
Using the SQL Server Install wizard, Command Prompt and even in Powershell by invoking the setup.exe all work perfectly.
So, to reiterate, this issue only occurs while running in the context of DSC.
I am using the same domain login with Domain Admin Security and locally the account has Administrators group credentials.  The SQL Server Service account also has Administrators Group Credentials.

  • Reporting Services 2012 for SharePoint and SQL Server Agent "Subscriptions and Alerts"

After installing Reporting Services for SharePoint (Denali) in my test farm, I'm trying to configure the "SQL Server Agent" access for Reporting Services.  From Central Admin I'm going to the Reporting Service applicaiton configuration screen and selecting
"Provision Subscriptions and Alerts".  I've tried both options on this screen.  I've manually executed the "download sql script" in SQL Server, as well as entering a user with SQL sys admin rights on the SQL server into the login fields on the screen.
The role and permissions have been created for the application pool service account, but Reporting Services is still trying to connect with the annonymous login because I'm getting the following alert each time I open the "Provision Subscriptions and Alerts"
    screen:
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'
The "status" on the screen still shows "SQL Server Agent State cannot be determined".  Has anyone else seen this?
    Thanks!!

    Thanks for your reply!
    1) Looks like the new Reporting Services does not run as a Windows Service so it's not listed in the "Configure Service Accounts" pulldown.  As a result, I don't see how to set the service account.  It's only assigned to an application pool.
I installed it into an existing application pool and that application pool "is" in the list and has a domain service account already assigned.
    2) Which users need to be in here in order to configure the "Provision Subscriptions and Alerts" screen?  I already have the farm admin account which is the account I use when running Central Admin.
    3) As mentioned in #1, I've installed Reporting Services into an existing application pool with other service apps.
    4) This link is for Reporting Services 2008 R2 which is very different install process.  But I did follow the SQL Server Reporting Services 2012 RC0 installation instructions and the Reporting Services is functioning correctly with no errors.
I'm just not able to configure the sceduling the alerting with interfaces with the SQL Server Agent.
    Thanks!

  • Error on setup failover cluster with Windows 2008 R2 enterprise and SQL Server 2008 R2 (also with SP1)

    Hi!
The setup process fails with this error:
      Configuration error code:
    0x1C2074D8@1216@1
Configuration error description: There was an error setting private property 'VirtualServerName' to value 'CLUSTER02' for resource 'SQL Server'.  Error: Value does not fall within the expected range.
I have found some hints by google, but nothing really helpfull.
Has anyone had a simular problem when installing SQL server 2008 R2?
All posts I found are about sql server 2008 (no R2!).
The cluster itself is working (storage, network, msdtc, quorum...).
    Any hints?

    Hi Andreas Plachy,
Please make sure that the Virtual Server Name ‘CLUSTER02’ is unique on the network. In addition, are there any resources named ‘SQL Server’ on the Windows cluster? If that is the case, you may need to rename the related resources to avoid conflicting with
    SQL Server, and try again.

  • How to resolve a windows authenticated orphaned user in Sql Server 2008 R2?

    Hi,
We have some orphaned windows authenticated  users(domain) in the database while it had been
migrated from Sql Server 2005 to Sql Server 2008 R2, because there are no corresponding
logins for the users. Will just adding the logins would be sufficient or after adding the
logins should we also run sp_change_users_login @Action='update_one' to resolve any sid
    conflict. Thanking you in advance,
    With regards
    Binny Mathew

    Binny
You have issue with orphaned users if you use Mixed Authentication.  If you use Windows and move the db to the new server the Windows Login should be exist on the new server already.

  • SSIS 2012 package scheduling with SQL Server 2008 R2

Hi, We have a ssis 2012 package with parameters & would like to schedule this package in SQL Server 2008 R2 agent. Is there a way to pass parameters to the ssis package from SQL Server 2008 R2 agent?
    Thanks in advance..........
    Ione

You cant use SQL 2008 R2 to schedule it as dtexec 2008 cant execute package created using SSIS 2012. The inverse can be done though

  • How do I load an SSIS package created in Visual Studio 2012 Shell (Integrated) onto SQL Server 2012 using SQL Management Studio 2012

I am fairly new to this whole process of working with the Microsoft development environment.  Here is what I have to work with:
an NT server running Microsoft SQL 2012  - Microsoft SQL Server Standard (64-bit)  11.0.2100.60
and on my laptop (all freebie downloads):
SQL Server Management Studio 2012            ver 11.0.2100.60
Visual Studio 2012 Express  for Desktop Development and
    Visual Studio 2012 Shell (Integrated)
I was able to create an SSIS package in
2012 Shell (Integrated).  It takes a flat file and imports it into an SQL database table.  It runs successfully from within the
    2012 Shell (Integrated) envrionment.
But I am having trouble figuring out how to set this up on the 2012 SQL Server.  I see that one of my colleagues created an Integration Services Catalog,
and using SQL Management Studio I was able to create a folder under that called DigLic.  But when I go to the Projects subfolder of DigLic and attempt to import my SSIS package, I get an error message:
"To launch the Integration Services Deployment wizard, one of the components: Integration Services, Management Tools - Basic or Business Intelligence Development Studio has to be installed by the SQL Server
2012 Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation Edition.  To install a component, run SQL Server Setup and Select the component name"
I realize that Express Versions of Visual Studio lack the full feature set of a professional version.  But am I wrong in assuming that owning a server version of SQL Server 2012 gives us license to a professional
version of SQL Management Studio 2012?  If so, how would I go about getting this software component installed?  And I am not clear if this is something that needs to be installed on our SQL Server or if I simply need a professional version of SSMS
    loaded on my laptop.
I work for a company that is fairly fractured in its repsonsibilities, so I would need to know exactly what to ask for if I need to track down any licenses that I might need and if I need to have any specific software installed on our SQL server or on my
    laptop.
All helpt would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Arthur,
Thank you for your reply.  But at this point, one of my points of confusion is what software I have available to me.  I wish I had a useful central help desk to call up and just say, "Hey, load me up with all of the professional version(s) of Visual
Studio.  But I do not know what we have license to.  And I kind of need to know what the options are, so that I can ask a specific question of our vast buracracy.
For now, I have downloaded only free versions of Visual Studio client software.  Since my company does have servers running Microsoft SQL Server, I am going to assume that we have proper licensing for those servers.  But does that server license
allow me to get any professional versions of the PC client software for the various Visual Studio(s) 2012?
And if I get a professional version of Visual Studio 2012, does that do away with the three different flavors that I have right now?  I have 2012 versions of SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio Express, and Visual Studio Shell (Integrated).
    Your feedback is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi NickDeNora,
According to your description, we need to verify if you install
    Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) and
correct the manifest file. The manifest file is readable (although empty), but we cannot edit it (even if you are an administrator). Only SYSTEM has access to the file. So to be able to edit it, you must first take ownership of
it and grant ACLs. After saving the file, then run the setup again.

  • Connecting from oracle on windows 2008 64 bit to sql server.

    Hi,
    Oracle Server name: oraxyz
Database: 11.2.0.4 on windows 64 Bit.
    Database home: d:\app\product\11.2.0\db_1
    SQL server: sqlabc
I have a oracle database 11.2.0.4 on widows 2008 64 Bit on host oraxyz. I have to connect to SQL server sqlabc from this oracle database.
So I installed gateway for windows on oraxyz server in location d:\app\product\11.2.0\gateway.
My initdg4msql in Gaeway oracle home dg4msql\admin looks like this.
    # This is a customized agent init file that contains the HS parameters
    # that are needed for the Database Gateway for Microsoft SQL Server
    # HS init parameters
    HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO=[sqlabc]:1433//prodsql
    HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL=OFF
    HS_FDS_RECOVERY_ACCOUNT=RECOVER
    HS_FDS_RECOVERY_PWD=RECOVER
Then I created a listener in gateway oracle home as follows.
    DG4MSQL =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = oraxyz)(PORT = 1524))
    SID_LIST_DG4MSQL =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = dg4msql)
          (ORACLE_HOME = D:\app\product\11.2.0\Gateway)
          (PROGRAM = dg4msql)
Then in Oracle db home I created a tns alias as follows.
    dg4msql =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = oraxyz)(PORT = 1524))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SID = dg4msql)
          (HS = OK)
Then created a database link as follows
    SQL>CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK tosql connect to abc identified by 123 using 'DG4MSQL';
SQL> DESC sqlservertable@tosql gives me error
    ERROR:
ORA-28546: connection initialization failed, probable Net8 admin error
    ORA-02063: preceding line from tosql
    Could any one please help.
Do I have to create any ODBC connection for that?
    BR

Not part of your problem (yet) but I always get heartburn when I see someone naming their listener as if it has a relationship to something when it doesn't.  There really is no point to naming a listener as anything but its default name of LISTENER.
So, in your listener.ora, instead of
    DG4MSQL =
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = oraxyz)(PORT = 1524))
    SID_LIST_DG4MSQL =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = dg4msql)
          (ORACLE_HOME = D:\app\product\11.2.0\Gateway)
          (PROGRAM = dg4msql)
    Just use
    LISTENER=
      (DESCRIPTION_LIST =
        (DESCRIPTION =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = oraxyz)(PORT = 1524))
    SID_LIST_LISTENER =
      (SID_LIST =
        (SID_DESC =
          (SID_NAME = dg4msql)
          (ORACLE_HOME = D:\app\product\11.2.0\Gateway)
          (PROGRAM = dg4msql)

  • SQL server requirement in UCCE

    I met one problem:
we need to use CUIC 8.5 to query an external data source. According to the BoM from CISCO, only SQL 2005 is supported.
i would like to share the SQl 2005 of HDS or other UCCE SQl 2005. Is it possible?

    You are right, David.
because the reporting requires some customized data, we have to connct to an external database.
if we can share the database engine of HDS server, we can get more benefits.
COuld we put another database to the HDS server SQL server? I will not change any setting on HDS database.

  • SQL server requirement for sharepoint 2013

    Hello All,
currently i have installed SharePoint2013 in server farm mode, and i have used SQL Server 2008 R2 for DB. Can i use SQL Server 2012 for SharePoint 2013?
    Thanks

SharePoint 2013 is compatible with SQL 2008 R2 and SQL 2012 so yes.
What you can do is "move" the SharePoint DBs from SQL 2008 R2 to SQL 2012 without restore or backup.
    Link to msdn: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725(v=office.15).aspx
