Windows 7 or 8.1 for new laptop?

I'm close to buying a new laptop based on a 4th gen i7 and an Nvidia GTX, primarily for general personal use and some home music production. I also need it as a capable emergency/portable CS6 editing backup to my Xeon Win 7 desktop system.  I can choose the new OS.  Is there still any reason for me to avoid 8.1? Are there instead actual benefits to getting it or 8.1 Pro now?  I'm wondering especially in terms of drivers, Premiere's performance and any new Windows features regarding things like system management and security.
Thanks in advance.
David

I agree with Jim.
I have the new Dell Precision M6800 with Windows 8.1 and Creative Cloud.
It's a "killer combination".

    Hello,
Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.
Your computer comes with Win 8 pre-installed but one of the steps to install/run Windows 8.1 is having updated drivers for Windows 8.1
Please, go to Control Panel -> System (or Start -> type winver and open) and verify what is your current version - if it is Windows 8 or 8.1
    Windows 8 is version  6.2.x
    Windows 8.1 is version  6.3.x
If Windows 8 in place, then , please read this article and enroll in the steps:

Update to the latest drivers prior and post installation respectively for win 8/8.1 :

  • Looking for new laptop what are the differences between pro and air? Besides size. Does the air preform like the pro?

Looking for new laptop what are the differences between pro and air? Besides size. Does the air preform like the pro?

The NEW macbook Pro and Air are EXTREMELY close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics.
....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air VS Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse.
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.

A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are MUCH FASTER due to SSD density

  • Suggestions for new laptop

Hi. I need a little help picking out a new laptop and have no idea where to start.   I would use it for internet, photos, games and video. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for? I have a budget and would like to stay with a Windows based OS, preferably Windows 7 with the possibility of upgrading to Windows 8. Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Thank you.
Please forgive me if this post is in the incorrect part of the forum.

This is a pretty nice laptop that will everything you want it to and meets your budget: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/probook-15-6-laptop-4gb-memory-500gb-hard-drive/9177226.p?id=12189926620...
It not only has a better i5 processor (most of the other ones I seen in this price range had the lower end i3's) and while providing a better CPU it also has a faster hard drive at 7200rpm vs 5400rpm. Faster hard drives means the faster they access your stored data so the system feels more responsive. And it includes Windows 7.
The only slight draw back is it is Windows 7 32-Bit not 64 Bit. But that can be solved easily. The windows product key that ships with your computer is both 32 and 64 bit. So all you need is the 64 bit installation media (which MS offers as a free download, if you use google search you can come up with links to the direct downloads). So if you wanted the 64 bit OS you could do it if you know how.

  • Migrating desktop from old Windows XP Pro system to new laptop with Windows 7

I have been happily running Palm desktop software 4.2.0 w/ HotSync 6.0.1 for a long time on an old system with XP Pro. Now I need to move everything over to a new laptop that has Windows 7.
Bluetooth is available if I want it but don't know how to decide. I've been happy with the cradle that has the USB connection and charge power.
So my question is how to set up on the new machine while retaining all my data and information (contacts, appointments, bookmarks, etc.) that I have now.
Should I download new versions of software etc?
Any advice will be much appreciated!
    Post relates to: Palm TX

Please look at this link: http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=windows_hotsync&thread.id=53678
During the setup of Palm Desktop enter a username of 'test'. This way when you hotsync it will pull your data down to the PC.

  • Cisco Wireless card software for new laptops

Since new laptops no longer have PCMCIA slots, and Cisco doesnt sell a compatible card, at least none I can find, will their site survey tool work with the built in cards?  I need to do a site survey for implementing a MESH, and dont have the software anymore, mine died a horrible death.

tahequivoice wrote:Do they also have a magic pill that convinces he who spends money to buy one?   I do about 3 surveys a year, so hard to justify it. What other purpose can it serve?
Try Ekahau Site Survey or, better yet, TamoGraph Site Survey. A far more attractive price tag and excellent quality. TamoGraph should support virtually any built-in adapter, unless it's Ralink-based.

  • Photoshop CS3 Download Link for new laptop using serial number

    Hi all,
I need a download link for Adobe Photoshop CS3 for installing onto my new laptop as I bought a new laptop to run my photography work on mostly, as I use it for work. I have my serial number but not the cd package to install it as I have lost that. I am having trouble finding a link for cs3 though, can anyone help me find one?
    Thanks,
    Melissa.

  • OS 10.5.8 server managing services for new laptops

We are running a xserve running 10.5.8 but we have newer laptops running 10.8.1, problem is the mobile accounts won't allow the things like Icloud to show up under the system prefs of the new macbooks, even though I have put some of the log ins as not managed.  Any solutions to this where the teachers can possibly run the applications that are with the new laptops?

I will probably try installing it on a back-up drive firts. That is one of the recommended steps to get freehand to work with snow anyways. The goods news is we have Macbook pro we purchased in march and a imac G5 that I sent the logic board out to get repaired. I really need to get the G5 running because that is where a lot of the data is we need. Mailboxes, address books etc.
Have you tried using the G5 as a target disk via firewire?
Why do upgrades always have to be so painful and exciting at the same time.
I dunno, it is part of the fun though. It is especially painful right now where the OS is evolving and older software and peripherals are being transitioned out.

  • Windows 8.1 activation error 0xC004F074 for new laptop

i just bought a new Lenovo ideapad with windows 8.1 pre installed and i m unable to activate windows.
I don`t have the product key so i installed the magical jelly bean keyfinder, got the 25 product key installed and tried the three methods on the most of the blogs (slmgr.vbs
    –ipk xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx, and Slui
    3, and sfc /scannow) with
    no success. Any Clue.
i was told to ask in Windows 8.1 forum
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
As the pre installed system activation belongs to OEM manufacture, in my opinion, it would be better to contact Lenovo to check why their system doesn't activated. If this is your laptop itself problem, you could ask lenovo to help you rebuild your system
    and activate it.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Need driver officejet v40 for new laptop, hp with windows 7 64 bit os.

new hp laptop...windows 7 64 bit os. need driver for old hp officejet v40 printer.

T2, you don't mention how much system memory that you have installed.  Windows 7 will run best with 3GB of memory.  Also, integrated memory is always lacking in any games.  The 128MB is not allocated at one time.  It is only used as needed.  If you want to play games, you should upgrade your memory and upgrade to a standalone video card.  I don't believe that a driver update will make any difference.

  • Windows 7 does not recognize new laptop HDD?

I got a new hard drive for my comuter, I went to install windows on it but the installer said is no drive there, and tells me to get the proper drivers. I don't know where to get the drivers, and it's a Western Digital so it uses the built in drivers from windows. My desktop recognizes the drive fine, but the laptop does not. Any help?

Nevermind.  I removed the device, turned the power off and back on to let Windows reinstall the device.  That made the problem go away.  I should have tried that first.

  • Need suggestion for new laptop

Hi, everyone I'm needing suggestions. I had a touchsmart tx2z however after nearly 4 years it has bit the dust couldn't be saved after its last crash computer would turn on but screen would stay black and ome of the keys like the caps lock would flash. Computer guys say my motherboard has gone bad.  I'm looking for another computer now but would like one that is similar to the hp touchsmart but does not cost a lot of money.

Here is the current line-up of HP Touchscreen Laptops. Prices start at about $650 and go up from there. $650 sounds OK to my for a touchscreen laptop, but price is a subjective item. If these are too rich for you, you could always look at regular laptops.

  • Suggestions for new laptop - Maybe Satellite Pro L550-17U

Wasn't sure where to ask this so it's here in the General category.
I'm looking for a replacement laptop with a few specific requirements. I can get most of them but the last one is proving difficult. So the requirements are:
17" screen with at least 1600 horizontal resolution.
Minimum of 4Gb RAM (8 would be nice)
    Run 64-bit Windows 7
    Bluetooth
    and finally, the cruncher:
    Supports Intel VT (Virtualization Technology)
I thought the Satellite Pro L550-17U would be OK, but looking at the Intel site, it doesn't seem that the T6570 processor supports VT. And it would have to be supported in the BIOS anyway, and nothing in the spec says it will.
Anybody able to provide any help please? I'd like to stick with Toshiba, as I've had such great reliability from them, but would consider other makes (sorry Toshiba) if that's the only option.
    Roger

    Thanks for your reply.
In answer to your first question, as little as I can get away with:). I'm expecting to pay over 600GBP, but certainly won't go over 1000.
As to your 2nd question, general office plus development work, and occasionally connecting to external screens for presentations. My aim is to run Windows 7 Ultimate with the current versions of MS Office, Visual Studio and Expression Studio and then upgrade those versions when the repacements are out, I also need to run older versions of Windows (XP, Vista) and Office (XP, 2003), hence the VT requirement.
Going back to your other comment, what isn't 'best' about the L model? I was looking at specs and not really considering the model.
