Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 has 0 Settings available

I've updated SCM with the 8.1/2012 R2 automatic updates. However, when trying to add an 8.1 or 2012 R2 setting, SCM says there are 0 settings available:
The particular setting I'm looking to add to my custom pack is User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Edge UI - Disable help tips. If I select Windows 8 as the product, I at least have
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Edge UI, but the specific setting is not there. Is this setting missing completely from SCM, or would it be available to me if I had a list of settings when selecting Windows 8.1?
I did notice that User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Edge UI - Disable help tips is in the Win8.1 User Security Compliance 1.0 baseline. That makes me wonder if it should be available when selecting 8.1 as
the product. I'd appreciate any help with this. Thanks.

Digital Filing broken with windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2?

Recently upgraded my machines so now I have Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2 running. The scanning from my Officejet L7680 to a network share on one of these machines is no longer working.
Looking into it with network monitors I can see that the login of the user and password is working but then the save of the file on the share gives and error.
In windows 8.1 it starts creating the file but cannot add content to it (so the file is 0 Bytes in size) on Server 2012 R2 the creation of the file already gives and error.
Searching around the web seems to indicate that changes in the SMB protocol on the latest windows versions are the cause of this and other MFP suppliers are providing firmware updates to fix this. There seems no way to fix this at the Windows side.
Can HP confirm this issue and indicate which all in ones will be able to connect to network shares on these latest windows version ? With or without a firmware update.

I can confirm that I'm experiencing the same issue on my Windows 8.1 x64 machine and Windows 2012 R2 Essentials. Will there ever be a firmware update for the L7680 printer so we can get this functionality working again?

Can't change printer port on Windows 8.1 and Server 2012 R2

1. Install "Lexmark X646e Class Driver" using a in-box print driver (i.e. one comes with the Windows installation base) .
2. Go to "Printer properties" -> "Port"
3. Select a custom monitor port, and the following error occurs in Event Viewer.
An error occurred while configuring print queue 'Lexmark X646e Class Driver'. Printer driver 'Lexmark X646e Class Driver' may not be used in conjunction with a non-inbox port monitor.
Same steps applied on Windows 8 and Server 2012, and not issues found. The restriction/limitation is newly added in Window 8.1 and Server 2012 R2.
Changing to a custom monitor port after printer driver installation is very important for us.
How can we solve or workaround the above issue, so it can behave like Windows 8 and Server 2012?

What Port Monitor just so I can bubble this information to some others?

We developed a custom printing system, which involved the following configurations:
1. Create a custom port monitor on server 2012 r2.
2. Change an existing print queue to use this custom port monitor, and share this print queue.
3. All workstations will print to this shared print queue on the server.
The goal is to manage/monitor the print information in StartDocPort for all printing for instance. This is what we've been doing for a long time.
Now we upgraded our system from server 2012 to server 2012 R2, but we can't change the port monitor to our ones anymore.
I've tried the Type3 printer driver, such as Brother Color Type3 Class Driver, unfortunately it didn't work if the installation is using "Add a printer", and select the driver from the list.
The only way to make it work is to install the printer driver using the one downloaded from the vendor's website, this will bypass Windows "Add a printer".
Is there any chance we can make this to behave like server 2012 or earlier? Modify registry keys?

OOBE will only hide pages that contain the answers in the XML. So if you want OOBE to prompt for a computer name, make sure your XML does not contain the ComputerName object.

Windows Deployment Services PXE Installation of Windows 10 Preview and Server vNext Technical Preview Failed

The automated answer file associated with Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview x64 (9481) and the Windows Server Technical Preview x64 (9841) seem to be incompatible. No problem adding both wim files to WDS, this completes without issue.
When trying to install both the Server vNext Technical Preview and Windows 10 Enterprise Technical Preview Via Network Installation (PXE) both encounter errors. The Server PXE Installation wont even commence after choosing the vNext Operating system installation,
and choosing the Windows 10 operating system encounters a "answer configuration error" towards the end (maybe the generalization pass?).
Anyone have a work around for configuring the answer file? or maybe a more positive experience?

We're playing around with Windows 10 TP and Server vNext also. For Windows 10 TP i got PXE based deployment running with unattend.xml from Windows 8.1. But i still did not get Server vNext deployment working.
I would also be happy if there's somebody out who has an idea on that topic.

Hello, I am writing as I am experiencing some issues with my favorite web browser after updating to Windows 8.1. Here are some details. I updated from Windows 8.0 to Windows 8.1 and ever since Firefox has run somewhat strangely. In particular when on sites with a lot of images like Facebook. It is like there is some kind of Flikr effect between the desktop and the images and between the images and the browser (almost like old 16 bit video games flikering). It is not too bad but it is an issue. I have tried resetting firefox and restarting the computer. I haven't tried a repair, and I haven't done an uninstall yet.

If you use extensions like Adblock Plus or NoScript or Flashblock that can block content then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content. 
You can see the installed Firefox extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions".
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Windows 8 and Server 2012. Not detecting network is a domain.

I hope I have posted this to the correct forum.
I have 2 x Windows 8 PCs that do not detect that they are connected to a domain (network location awareness not working). I can join them to the domain but they still don't recognise the network as a domain. Instead they identify it as "private".
Other PCs on the network (Win XP and Win 7) work prefectly, just the windows 8 machines don't work.
Also, when I do join them to domain I also receive this message.
"changing the Primary Domain DNS name of this computer to "" failed. The name will remain xxxx.local. The error was: the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. "
I have tried the following
- DHCP and DNS has being tried both as static and dynamic (can ping DNS server which is the domain controller Windows Server 2012) .
- Updated PC NIC drivers.
- No AV is installed on either server or PC.
- Updated PC to windows 8.1.
- Disabled both server and PC firewalls.
- Check NLA service and all dependent services are running.
- Disabled all adapters on server except for one.
I am really hoping someone can help with this as I would really appreciate it.

Hi Guys,
I managed to find a solution to the problem. I noticed that the DNS server zones did not look quite right. The _msdcs zone was missing the subfolders (dc, domains, gc, pdc).
To fix this issue: on the NIC adapter I had to tick the box "register this connection's addresses in DNS" (found under TCP/IP v4 > advanced > DNS tab).
I then had to remove the DNS role, reboot then re-add the role. Problem solved. Hopefully this saves someone else pulling their hair out for an entire day.

Remote Desktop Connection between Windows Mobile 6.5 and server 2012

We have problem with remote desktop connection. The server that I want to connect is 2012 R2.
We have no trouble with server 2008. I searched from internet, there are solutions on server side(I am not sure if these suggestions solve the problem), but our customers don’t want to solve this problem
on server side because it is diffucult and risky.
Is there a solution on handheld terminal side to do?
Operating system: WM 6.5 classic(Professional o.s. has no effect, same error continues)

What is the precise error message you are seeing? What are the exact symptoms?
I don't remember what version of RDP/featureset is supported by Windows Mobile 6.5. Perhaps the client does not support Network Level Authentication, which is required by default on Server 2012 R2. You can enable non-NLA connections by
unchecking Allow connections only from computers with Network Level Authentication in Server Manager -- RDS -- Collections -- Properties of collection -- Security tab.
Lack of NLA may not be the cause of the issue you are experiencing, however, if it is the only way to solve it would be to change the server setting or to potentially install a new client on the device that supports NLA.

Windows XP and Server 2012 R2

I have a new 2012 R2 Domain Controller and Exchange 2013 server running on Server 2012 R2. I have a few Windows XP clients that for some reason as of Monday cannot browse or access the file shares on the Domain Controller. However they can still access the
shares on the Exchange server. SMBv1 appears to be enabled on the Domain Controller and the Windows Firewall is off so I do not know what the issue is. DNS is working and I can ping the server from the client without any issues. The Windows Vista/7 workstations
can access the server without any issues.

What's the error message when failing to access the shared folders on DC?
Please test to:
1. logon same account in Windows XP and Windows 7 to see if the issue related to account.
2. Logon different accounts (one of them should able to access the shares on another computer) in Windows XP to see if it related to device.
Meanwhile have a try to disable SMBv2 on your DC to see if it is SMB related issue.
To disable SMB2 Server functionality set the follwing registry key:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
REG_DWORD Smb2
Value: 0 = disabled
Value: 1= enabled
Check if issue still exists after diable SMB2. You can enable it after testing.

Windows Update fails on Server 2012 R2 Virtual Machine

I have set up a virtual network with two virtual machines. The first VM is Server 2008 R2 and is set up as a domain controller. The second VM is Server 2012 R2, and has been joined to the domain. The DC (TestVM1) is also set up as a DNS server.
From TestVM2 (Server 2012 R2), I am able to log in using a domain login, and I am able to browse to a public website.
I was able to run Windows Updates from TestVM1, but when I attempt to run Windows Updates from TestVM2, it fails.
The Windows Update client shows "Error(s) found:" and "Code 8024402F".

I am having the exact same issue. Fresh build of Server 2012 R2 from the Microsoft Volume Licensing ISO. I tried before and after joining to the domain. Same error every time. Firewall is turned off. No AV. We do have a cloud proxy service, but I bypassed
that as a test and got the same error message. I also tried to stop wuauserv and cleaning out the folder and starting it back up. No joy as well. This is a VM server running on ESXi 5.1. Server 2008 servers dont seem to have
an issue. Server 2012 server don't seem to have an issue. Only this new Server 2012 R2 server. My logs are below:

SBS 2011 VM and Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V host. After rebuilding the host image, no email is received, EMC states "You don't have sufficient permissions to view this data" when looking at organization config. Server config not shown on EMC.

Hyper-V Host Server 2012 R2 x64 drive c:
All VMs, including SBS 2011 Standard x64 are on drive d:
I replaced my motherboard and defined a Marvell RAID 1 Mirror for my boot drive C:. My drive D: containing all of my Hyper V machines remained untouched since the new MB had Intel Matrix Controller with RAID 5, as did the old MB.
Since the C: drives are a few bytes smaller after configured as a RAID 1, I was unable to restore drive C from the image copy, so I rebuilt a new Hyper-V Host identical as possible using Server 2012 R2 x64. I had to redefine the Hyper-V machines on
the host, and the 1st time I brought it all (host and VMs) I had to reconfigure the NICs due to new MAC addresses, and verifying SBS 2011 DNS and DHCP for all physical and Hyper-V machines. Otherwise my Hyper-V SBS 2011 x(64) wasn't touched.
Now the SBS Exchange 2010 is not receiving mail. In the Exchange Management Console clicking on the Organization config gives me a highlighted error "You don't have sufficient permissions to view this data". The Server
Config is no longer on the EMC. The Recipient Config looks fine.
Outlook 2013 x64 connects to the Exchange Server, but no new mail appeared. There were just a few older messages that came in since the last time I opened Outlook. My public DNS on GoDaddy was not changed. I did not change sending mail
through my ISP Sonic.net. The SBS internal DNS doesn't have an MX record, but I'm not sure it ever did since my GoDaddy public DNS has an MX record.
I tried restoring to an earlier Image Copy, but that made no difference. I'm using the Windows Backup from SBS 2011 for my daily image copy backups.

After more research and running the Best Practices report from the EMC, I am missing a slew of ManagementRolesAndRoleGroups from the RBAC container.
Based on your description, it seems that you have find the cause of this issue. On current situation, I still
suggest that you should run
SBS 2011 BPA and then check if can find some relevant errors. Just for a confirmation.

Network QoS and Server 2012 R2

We are designing our new cluster environment on HP Blades with 6 Ethernet and 2 HBA connections:
Ethernet = 2 x on board and
4 x quad port
HBA = 1 x Dual port
I have been advised that we will be configuring Live Migration on the Management network along with the Cluster Heartbeat. The Cluster Heart beat and management will
be protected by using QoS.
QoS will be set using GPO on the OU that contains the Hyper V Hosts.
The GPO will be provide a route for live migrations between nodes and will ensure that the Cluster Heartbeat and MGMT services are not compromised
I have no experience of using GPO for QoS in Server 2012. Can any one provide any incite or if there is a better way to deliver the QoS on the management network that will have the Heart beat and live migration services.

Based on my research, we can configure the Quality of Service in the Group Policy Management which applies to computers or users, you can find this group policy under:
Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Policy-based QoS or
User Configuration\Windows Settings\Policy-based QoS.
During the configuration process, you can specify an application by typing its executable name in the
Application Name page, or you can also select All Applications.

Can't Dual Boot 8.1 and Server 2012

Hello folks; I hope someone has a solution to this issue. Right now, I'm stumped; and, I can't seem to find an answer on the net.
I have a crash-and-burn system, an HP Envy 700-400z, with an 256m SSD that came partitioned into Windows & Recovery at the factory; and, a 1T HDD drive. I want to load this machine with a couple of OSs; but I can't.
My first try was with Win2012; and, one of two things happens. If I try to install Win2012 to the HDD, the installation hangs; and, I have to back out the installation.
I then shrunk the partition on which Windows 8.1 sits; and created another partition for Win2012 to see what would happen. I mounted the new partition from an Empty folder in the now shrunk partition. I did get a message when I installed 2012
that the partitions are not in the correct order; but, I went ahead anyway with the installation just to see what would happen. This seems to work for awhile; and I can boot to either 8.1 or 2012; but at some point, I lose network access. I get
a message that the controller has an invalid IP configuration; and, nothing works but restoring the disk image to factory setting.
If it did work, it, obviously, won't work long term; because, I can't keep shrinking the one partition on the SSD to load SUSE Linux and other OSs that I want to use for my studies. I know I can use Hyper-V as a resolution for multiple OSs; but at
the moment, I want to understand what the deal is with GPT and the installation problems I'm having.
I suspected GPT has something to do with my problem; but am not sure. I read up on UEFI; but, both the SSD and the HDD are GPT drives. I've looked elsewhere on-line; but I come up with nothing that addresses the issue except for general discussions
on GPT. Ideally; I'd like to restore the original boot partition on the SSD to its factory setting, and carve up the 1T HDD for all the other OSs before I tackle doing the same thing with Hyper-V.
At this point, there's nothing on the machine but two OSs and SQL Server 2012; and I have the recovery disks if I happen to shoot myself in the foot; so, it doesn't matter what I do to the disk configuration. GPT is new territory for me; so, any help
with this problem is greatly appreciated.

Are there any differences between Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2 that might impact TFS or SQL server required for TFS?

In the interest of just getting started and learning the basics of setting up TFS, I previously setup an IDE using a large workstation running Windows 8. I set up the required servers for TFS using VM's through Hyper-V. I am now transferring
everything to a new and separate physical server.
My question stems from a problem I had when I originally setup the TFS system the 1st time. I couldn't get SQL server to work using the Server 2012 R2 download from the subscription center. When I used Server 2012, it worked, so I proceeded that
way just to get going.
So now I'm setting things up anew on a new physical box, I want to ask up front, is there some difference in the R2 version that causes problems with either TFS or SQL server, or was there likely some oversight on my part when I did things the 1st time?
As an addendum to my question, I always assumed R2 merely means the Server software has progressed to a refined state and is ready for wide distribution and easy setup. I assumed that there are no differences between the Standard version and the R2
version. Is that understanding correct?

I am/was using TFS2013 and VS2013. As I recall, my problem was getting SQL Server to work, but I thought asking this question on this forum was wiser because I figured everyone using TFS would be well familiar with these issues.
At any rate, it seems as though TFS2013 is fine with Server 2012 standard or R2.
