Windows 8.1 Broken Windows/Metro apps when WIM deployed via MDT

Windows 8.1 u1 Broken Windows/Metro apps when WIM deployed via MDT
Windows 8.1 Enterprise - update 1, x64bit with latest updates installed.
I am having a similar problem to thread (Sysprep
and Windows 8.1 -- missing Metro apps after reboot?).  Although slightly different so starting a new one.  Not missing however a set of them do not install completely and display "error - this app cant install".  Certain windows
apps fail install, mail, video,  We use vmware ESX 5.5 to capture our image.   When I deploy the image to VMware environment, all apps install successfully, when we deploy to any laptop, certain apps
fail to install.  They display X beside them.  The workaround is to sign into windows live account and install them.
I do have a custom start layout installed via a deploy task sequence (using command POWERSHELL -NonInteractive -Command Import-StartLayout -LayoutPath .\CustomStartLayout.bin -MountPath %SystemDrive%\)
Disabling the custom layout import does not solve the issue.
Any ideas?

  • Windows Metro Apps lead to Start screen when opened.

    I am currently using Windows 8.1. Recently, when I logged out of my microsoft account of my computer and signed in again, the Metro Apps like Reader, Music and Video cannot be opened. Running them leads back to the Start screen. I've searched for many
    solutions but they cannot fix it. Does anyone know the solution that really works?

    Hello Moe Ye Htet,
    Do you mean that when you open Windows Store apps, it goes back to start screen automatically?
    What do you mean about the sentence ‘when I logged out of my microsoft account of my computer and signed in again, the Windows Store Apps like Reader, Music and Video cannot be opened. ’?   When can you open the Windows Store app as normal?
    Have you made any changes before this issue?
    Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Run app troubleshooter.

  • Windows Metro App Terminated by OS

    I'm developing a Windows 8.1 App with Html/JavaScript. The app is for my company and I can't say what it does, but the app is bussiness
    critical. In some scenario our machines can reach 90% of RAM usage and the App is terminated by the OS. I've watched that other Apps are terminated as well, except Microsoft Apps like Skype, Lync etc, they don't get terminated. My question is how can I make
    my app so that the OS can't terminate it?

    @kaloyanlom,
    So the problem is that if other applications use 90% RAM then your Store APP application will be terminated?
    In that way I would recommend you consult your Store App question on the following forum:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsapps/en-us/home?category=windowsapps
    Visual Studio Setup forum is talking about "Install/Uninstall Visual Studio", it is not the right place for talking about this Store App related question, in my point of view you may need to optimize your code in this kind of scenario.
    Best regards,
    Barry

  • Crystal Reports 13 for VS2013 Hangs when report deployed via Clickonce

    Hi,
    We have upgraded from vs2008 to vs2013 one of our .net C# projects. Project consist of a Server and a windows client. Reports are run in the client, and data transported with disconnected Datasets ( No direct connection to the database ). We use Microsoft clickonce to deploy this application to our users.
    The problem we have is that after the migration clients deployed with clickonce experience a delay of about 1 minute while the report is shown with a message "please wait while the document is processing". However if we run the application directly from the filesystem the report is shown immediately.
    running the clickonce deployed shows the following message using process monitor, however after ~1 minute the report displays correctly.

    1. the report from the code above is empty and has no connections to database.
    2. Using Vs2013
    3. Using SAP Crystal Reports, developer version for Microsoft Visual Studio - Service Pack 9 - Fixed Issues and updates - Busines…

    Hi,
    Finally found the issue:
    Our windows application every 20 minutes ( 1 minute in debug ) check for clickonce updates in an independent thread using CheckForDetailedUpdate method and then it sleeps.
    public void ApplicationUpdateTimerThread()
      int updateInterval = applicationUpdateTimer.Interval = 1200000; // 20 mins
      if (ApplicationDataAccess.IsDebug) { updateInterval = 60000; }
      while (true)
         UpdateCheckInfo updateInfo = appDeployment.CheckForDetailedUpdate();
         Thread.Sleep(updateInterval);
    Doing this was locking the filesystem where now Crystal is putting their temporary report files and therefore preventing file access until the thread was active again ( The reason for the 60 seconds delay )
    So Creating a new thread to only check for update and let it die inmediately fixed the issue.
    public void ApplicationUpdateTimerThread()
      int updateInterval = applicationUpdateTimer.Interval = 1200000; // 20 mins
      if (ApplicationDataAccess.IsDebug) { updateInterval = 60000; }
      while (true)
      System.Threading.Thread t1 = new System.Threading.Thread (delegate()
      { UpdateCheckInfo updateInfo = appDeployment.CheckForDetailedUpdate(); });
      t1.Start();
      Thread.Sleep(updateInterval);

  • Office 2013 windows 'pop-under' when run as remote apps on Server 2008R2 from Windows 7 clients

    We have an environment with Windows 7 clients running Office 2013 via RDS on Windows Server 2008R2.
    When users double click emails from Outlook, they 'pop-under', forcing the user to relocate the window which has fallen behind the application's primary window, leaving behind a slight redraw of what is supposed to be the pop-up window. Users also experience
    difficulty opening application menu/help items and any other dialogue boxes in any/all of the other Office 2013 apps we've deployed via RDS.
    This issue persists only on Win7 PCs (WinXP does not exhibit this behaviour). The RDP clients range from 6.2.92 to 6.1.7601

  • Export Grid to PDF file In windows Store app using Xaml and C#

    I am working on windows store and have multiple data field  which I have to export to PDF  file
    In wpf  project i easily export gridview data to pdf file but need help to do same thing in windows metro app.

    There is no in-box PDF writing API. You will need to find a third party component. If you search the forum there are several threads (as recent as yesterday) with discussing this with component suggestions.

  • Updating Windows modern apps during image servicing

    Hi,
    We use MDT to deploy our Windows images and also for monthly updating our corp images to keep them up-to-date with the latest patches.
    I have the impression that this doesn't update the built-in Windows Mordern apps (such as the mail app, people app etc) if they get updates. Is there a way to automate updates to these apps in the image?
    /Bart.

    Hello Bart,
    Based on my research, we can’t update the Windows store app in the Windows image.
    The Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) allows you to sideload apps during operating system deployment.
    For more information, please take a look at the following article.
    Sideload Apps with the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit

  • Talking to C# based WinRT components that contain UI features like XAML based user controls from a JavaScript based Windows Store app

    Can you create a WinRT component written in C# that consists of a library of XAML based controls and then used those controls within a Windows Store app using WinJS or via a JS Cordova plugin for Windows 8.1 & WP8.1?
    Is this possible or can you only use a C# based WinRT component that contains a library of XAML controls in XAML/C# based Windows Store apps?
    My understanding is that a C# based WinRT component containing non-UI code (i.e. no XAML controls) can be used in a Windows Store app written C#, VB.NET, JavaScript or VC++, but not sure if that principle would work with XAML controls
    wrapped via WinRT types. In theory a XAML control is a C# class, so could work, but not sure how would JS code read that and then launch for example a page or user control from/into its HTML based UI?
    Sandip Ahluwalia

    Right. The code in your app is C# code, but the actual Xaml controls (like the rest of the Windows Runtime) are native code. They are projected into each language (C#, VB, C++ in the case of Windows.UI.Xaml) in a way that appears natural for that
    language and the interop layer is hidden.
    You could expose a Xaml control in a Windows Runtime Component written in any of C#, VB, and C++ to an app written in any of C#, VB, and C++, and the control would appear as a normal C#, VB, or C++ runtime class. This won't
    work for Xaml controls in JavaScript, since the HTML window doesn't have the Xaml hosting infrastructure, but for non-UI code you can write a WRC in C#, VB, or C++ and it will appear as a normal JavaScript class to a JavaScript app.

  • Saving files for metro apps in Windows 8/8.1 when printing

    Hi,
    I have a query regarding saving files for metro apps Windows 8/8.1.
    Metro apps saves the file automatically  to the Document folder when we print.
    But I would like to save the files into a recommened folder like C:\users\tmp\
    Please suggest me, is there a way to save the files to a particular folder for metro apps in Windows 8/8.1.
    Thanks in Advance
    Regards
    Toshik12

    As far as I know (and I may be wrong), there's no built-in file saving when printing documents.  How are you confirming that?
    You can save the file anywhere you want, as long as the user chooses the folder location using the FolderPicker.
    Matt Small - Microsoft Escalation Engineer - Forum Moderator
    If my reply answers your question, please mark this post as answered.
    NOTE: If I ask for code, please provide something that I can drop directly into a project and run (including XAML), or an actual application project. I'm trying to help a lot of people, so I don't have time to figure out weird snippets with undefined
    objects and unknown namespaces.

  • Sysprep and Windows 8.1 -- missing Metro apps after reboot?

    So, I'm trying to figure out an issue with Sysprep and a clean-install Windows 8.1 64 Enterprise system:
    When I sysprep the computer from my admin account with my unattend.xml file, when it reboots, I'm only getting 7 Metro apps at the start screen and
    14 Metro Apps at the "all apps" screen -- things like Weather, Maps, Calendar, Mail, etc are missing -- and actually look like they aren't installed
    as searching for something like "People" -- gives no results.
    From what I've been able to gather, the behavior of the start screen should controlled by an appsFolderLayout.bin file, but when I first set up the initial
    account (not "administrator", but the initial local admin account), that file does not exist anywhere.
    I've tried creating the file manually by running:
    Export-StartLayout -As Bin -Path C:\Temp\appsFolderLayout.bin
    and either putting it in \Users\<myadminaccount>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
    or \Users\Default\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
    and sysprepping again (after restoring a snapshot to the pre-sysprep/post-clean install state), but this isn’t making any difference.
    When I run sysprep /generalize — the .bin file is deleted and replaced by some other default one — that I’m not sure where it is generated from.
    Does anybody have any suggestions here?    Windows 8.0 just worked with my unattend.xml file without having to mess with appsFolderLayout.bin, so I’m not sure what I’m missing.
    Thanks!

    If you are still having trouble, this is an outline of the full process I use that seems to be consistently producing good results:
    - Install Windows 8.1 Enterprise with autounattend.xml, in particular, blank administrator password, add user account test, auto-logon as Administrator, run "net user test /delete" immediately after logon to get back to just having the administrator account.
    There should be no reason why all that has to be done in autounattend.xml, but it is the way I do it. There are a few other mandatory settings if you want a fully-automated setup.
    - At this point in time the Administrator account only shows a few tiles on the start screen, all actions are performed using the Administrator account.
    - Run Schtasks.exe /change /disable /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\AppxDeploymentClient\Pre-staged app cleanup" before the task has had a chance to run.
    - Install all applications, updates and settings as you want.
    - Run Sysprep, in particular blank administrator password, add user account test, auto-logon as Administrator, run "net user test /delete" immediately after logon to get back to just having the administrator account. Also importantly we set CopyProfile to
    false under Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup specialize pass. I don't know because I haven't tried it, but I imagine that if you run this and copy the Administrator profile to the default user profile then the default user profile may be missing some apps. We
    do all customization of the default user profile explicitly by loading the registry hive and editing it directly.
    After the image is deployed the Admistrator account has all the standard tiles present, but two of them report errors (I think it is Music and Videos). Any other profiles have all tiles present and all apps work.
    The full sysprep XML is included below in case it is useful to anybody. The company-specific settings and passwords have been blanked out, but otherwise it is the full one we use and fairly generic apart from the Australian settings. Note that this one is
    for a 64-bit image.

  • How to Solve Windows 8 Metro App Crash on Macbook Pro 2010 13"

    There is a known problem
    (See http://www.onebitzero.com/how-to-fix-metro-apps-from-crashing-under-nvidia-beta- driver-296-17-in-windows-8/ )
    that many notebooks equipped with nVIDIA GPU and running Windows 8 will crash some Modern UI (Metro) apps,
    including Game, Camera, Remote Desktop, ... apps.
    My MacBook Pro 2010 13" has an nVIDIA GeForce 320M.
    I installed Windows 8 Pro RTM gotten from DreamSpark Premium and Boot Camp Software 3.2 on my MacBook Pro.
    Unfortunately, I met the Modern UI app crash problem.
    I fought against this problem two days and almostly surrended.
    Unbelievablely, I could solve it.
    Yes. We can simply solve the crash problem by installing the latest 301.42 driver download from nvidia.com.
    But it is not perfect: we will find we can't adjust the brightness anymore.
    I also tried many methods, including modifies .inf files and change permissions but all are failed.
    Except one for which I got an idea from Windows Event Viewer.
    I found I got an error event when I launched the problematic Modern UI app. For example,
    "Faulting application name: wwahost.exe, version: 6.2.9200.16384, time stamp: 0x50107c6e
    Faulting module name: nvd3dumx.dll, version: 8.17.11.9682, time stamp: 0x4b884f8a"
    (Attention! The following steps are at your risks.
    Or you may not try it.)
    The steps to solve the crash problem and simultanously preserve the brightness adjustment function are:
    1. Download the latest 301.42 driver from nvidia.com. Then, click it to extract files to C:\
    and we don't install it.
    2. Copy the Boot Camp nVIDIA driver files from "13-inch MacBook Pro Mac OS X Install DVD,"
    ie. this folder:
    (DVD drive):\Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64
    3. Replace the older nvd3dumx.dl_ with the newer one.
    I.e. overwrite

    4. Follow this tutorial to turn off driver integrity check:
    http://www.killertechtips.com/2009/05/05/disable-driver-signing-windows-7/
    and reboot.
    5. Install the modified driver by clicking
    Boot Camp\Drivers\NVidia\Vista-Win7_64\setup.exe
    6. Reboot your computer and good luck.

    The method described above is too complex.
    I found a more easy way to solve the Modern app crash problem.
    That is to download the legacy driver 296.10 here
    http://www.geforce.com/drivers/beta-legacy
    Unfortunately, 296.10 and 19x don't solve all problems on Windows 8:

  • Windows 8.1 MUI Deployment vs default metro app language

    Hi,
    I try to deploy a Windows 8.1 Enterprise image with 2 languages, but when the Windows is deployed, the language of the metro apps (Bing news, ....) are not in the correct language.
    I have start my GOLD IMAGE with a Windows 8.1 x64 Enterprise French.  After that, I have added the English Language Pack.  I have make a sysprep to the windows 8.1 with the two language (original language is french).  I have import the .WIM
    in SCCM to deploy it.
    When I deploy the WIM image to a new computer with the default language french (set in unattend.xml), the first time a user open a session on the computer, the metro apps are in english (Windows Store, Bings News....).  I'm unable to have the metro
    app deployed with the corresponding language.
    When I deploy by default in english, no problem!  I don't know what is wrong, normally, the initial OS is french and i'm unable to have metro app in french!
    Thank you,
    Steve

    Hi,
    Considering that it's related to local or language settings.
    By the way, I would like to know which part in your Windows store or Bing app display as English, the settings and UI or only the content in these apps.
    I recommend you change all local or language settings in the unattended file as French to see what's going on.

  • TS3276 An email sent from my iMac has a button linked to a clip hosted on Vimeo. When received, the link functions on iMac and iPad, but opens a window of app icons on iPhone and iPod touch. Any ideas what's wrong?

    For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
    If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
    And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

  • [Discussion] Will you use Metro apps more in Windows 10?

    With Windows 10 we will be able to run Metro apps in windowed mode on the desktop.
    Now for those who tried the Windows 10 Technical Preview, I had a few questions to start a discussion.
    Will this change the way you think about  Metro apps?
    Will you use Metro apps more? If yes, which ones would you use?
    Do you think they can replace desktop apps in Windows 10?
    To start, I never used Metro apps really besides running them in splitscreen mode with my desktop apps in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I use mostly PDF Reader, Facebook and the Mail app. The Mail app is really my favorite app. Because you can sync all your accounts in one mail program. Plus it's tablet-friendly. I have currently 3 mail accounts synced with Mail (Metro app).
    Now with Windows 10 I will finally be able to open Metro apps at any given time without them getting in the way of all other apps that are running.
    Something else why I prefer Metro apps is that we finally have a design which we have to follow or aim for. Something I hate is that every app tries to look unique. Some look very stylish, others look very primitive. But with Metro apps there is a standard where every app looks roughly the same but may differ in functionality. Metro apps work on both tablets and desktops. While desktop apps are not guaranteed to be tablet-friendly with their tiny controls.

    Hello,
    I mainly exist in a "classic" Desktop (Win32) Windows world, so my use of Modern Windows apps is fairly limited.
    That said, with the ability to run Modern Windows apps in a windowed (e.g., non-full-screen) mode and, of course, the continued release of additional apps, I expect to be running more of them over time.
