Windows 8.1 Computer taken over.

My daughter used my computer last night to download a movie turned off my virus protection and used a program to down load. By the time I realized it was too late. She down loaded something called Optimization tool and uTorrent. I uninstalled
both but now I have to go into programs and run Chrome from there, all desk top icons to connect to internet will not work. My links in my emails won't work and says my settings don't allow be to open links. I have run a deep scan using Vipre antivirus
(this is a paid antivirus), The other problem is that my computer is new and running windows 8.1 and I have no idea where to find files or how to empty my temp files. And before anyone say it, yes I know I should not have let her on but much can
happen in a blink of an eye. I am assuming my computer is infected with something that has taken control of it.

Hello,
The Windows Desktop Perfmon and Diagnostic tools forum is to discuss performance monitor (perfmon), resource monitor (resmon), and task manager, focusing on HOW-TO, Errors/Problems, and usage scenarios.
As the question is off topic here, I am moving it to the
Where is the Forum... forum.

• How to tell if computer taken over?,

Help. Net work activity monitor show super large amount of activity even if no programs running. So much so that can't use Safari or E=mail. Does this mean computer taken over and how can I check?

Not likely. You'd have to manually accept an incoming screen sharing request. Go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Security and Sharing to ensure all your ports are unchecked and the Firewall is turned on.
Don't use Peer2peer software.
Check that Time Machine isn't presently backing up.
Check that Spotlight menu doesn't say it is indexing.
Don't use any "system maintenance" tools except backup tools on your Mac.
Make sure your hard disk is never more than 85% full (this number is arbitrary, but has been found to make swap files work real hard at working at all).

I used to be able to access the BIOS settings on my 9040n Pavillion until I instale Windows 8.1. Supposedly, there is an advanced start menu to allow me to make changes, but I never get that option. Any ideas?

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

• Cloud Protection??? Taken over my computer.

I downloaded from the internet and now Cloud Protection has taken over my screen and will not go away unless I purchase it.I have uninstalled everything and it's still there. I would like to do system recovery to take it back to factory setting and I did copy the recovery discs at purchase in November 2010. Satellite C655. But it says I don't have Windows on the discs. I don't understand what's wrong or what I am doing wrong. Can someone please help me? I installed and ran VIPER and it cleaned over 276 infected files but there are still many .exe files saying infected so I figured I'd just reset the computer. Every 30 seconds Cloud takes over. This is so angering. Mercy. I thank you in advance.

You can remove Cloud Protection using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

• HT1338 installation has taken over 2 days. wont let my computer restart

my installation of the new iphoto has taken over two days with out completion. computer wont let me restart. is it a virous or a glitch. please help

Hi franontheedge, when you revert to a restore point, you may roll back your Firefox further than desired, for example, losing recently added bookmarks or saved passwords. It might be preferable to clean out the unwanted software by hand. If you have 10 minutes...
I suggest:
(1) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program (or for XP Add/Remove Programs). After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
(2) open the '''Add-ons page''' using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
(3) With the above removed, you can update your home page if it's not already back to normal. These articles have more details on how:

My computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse. It has taken over my Mac email account and began sending out malicious emails to everyone in my address book. I cleared out my MAC address book and began using my AOL email account. It took a few days and then my AOL email account was infected and has now been send out malicious email to all my contacts for over a month. It has also infected my iPhone--I am no longer able to send or receive emails on my iPhone. Also, once the Trojan Horse began using my AOL email it completely blocked me from using my MAC account by sending never ending popups asking for my email password to access my MAC email account, but it never accepts my pass word. The TH has also slowed down everything on my computer. It's like I am working on an old PC with dial up connection instead of the high speed digital connection that I have. The little color wheel spins constantly as I wait for sometimes over a minute for a page to pull up. If it pulls up at all. I have tried to use the 2 disks that came with my computer to completely remove everything on my computer and then reinstall all the programs, but I am not allowed to sweep my computer clean. I thought maybe my disks that came with my computer were defective so I called Apple and they sent me 2 new disks. I am not able able to clear my computer with the 2 new disks either. I have done this before successfully so it's not something new to me. I do remember when I believe my computer became infected: I had googled an unusual sewing term, and I was opening what appeared to be legitimate sites, when all of a sudden a pop up appeared that said that my computer had been infected. I immediately shut my computer off, but it was too late. I downloaded a virus program for Mac, and it has never found a virus or problem at all. I think it is part of this Trojan Horse, but I am unable to delete it from my computer. It refuses to uninstall. The Mac Trojan Horse is real and it is terrible. If anyone has any suggestions for me I would be very appreciative,
Beth

I have another computer that a virus may have taken over and I cannot log into it anymore. I just downloaded Itunes on a new computer but most of my songs are not on there. Is there a way to still access or find those songs? Remotely or another way? Or do I need to take it to a tech to get my files off of my hard drive?

Edit > Preferences > Store check Music under Automatic Downloads.
Open the iTunes Store from left hand column, then select Purchasedfrom the column on the right, click the Not In My Library button and select the tunes you want to download again.
That said, you seem to be under a misapprehension as to how iTunes works, or at least how it has worked in the past. It has, until recently, been up to you take care of your purchases once they have been downloaded. You had a one-time download which you were reminded to back up. With the recent change to this policy you can at least download your store purchases again, but having a personal backup of your iTunes store purchases, stuff purchased elsewhere and files ripped from your CDs will still be preferable to gathering all the stuff together again in the event of a disaster.
For a backup strategy see this User Tip.

• Adobe has taken over my scanner. Used to scan and it would come to my computer as a

Adobe has taken over my scanner. I used to scan and it would go to a file. It asked me to update and it came up with a bunch of choices, I asked someone which to chose and they suggested whatever I have. On the side it comes up with = Export, Create, Convert, and I cannot just save it as I used to. How can I convert it back to a simple scan?

Hello you can also try resetting firefox ,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Something called Firefox Safe mode has taken over my computer, how do I turn it off?

• I recently updated Firefox and something called Fantistic Games has taken over my homepage and I can't get rid of it.

I used to get a field of 9 options to open when I opened a new page by clicking on the + button on the right side of the Search tab. After I updated Firefox a couple of days ago, my homepage had been taken over by something called "Fantasti Games". I can't find it anywhere to uninstall "Fantisti Games". I now have Google come up as my homepage when I open Mozilla Firefox, but each tab that I open comes up with the "FantastiGames" search engine. I need to get rid of that from my computer and revert back to what I had before, which was when I opened a new tab, I got nine large icons on the screen that gave me the choice of common sites to go to (such as AOL, YouTube, Weather.com, Google, etc.). Please tell me how to uninstall "FantastiGames".

This is embarrassing. It sounds like you have a third party program that has taken over your search engine, home page, and/or the default new tab page. Fortunately, this can be remedied easily:
# At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
# In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
# Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
# Click the remove button.
# Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.
After Firefox restarts, install the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/searchreset/ Search Reset Tool]. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.
For further information, please read [[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]].

• A search engine called DynaSearch has taken over fire fox without my permission

I think My brother has attacked my computer, he found my note book and i now have 160 spam when I had only about ten before, and even an xxx dating service used my daughters name to make me click to their site, saying," Sheila has a message for you". Since then fire fox started crashing every ten minutes, and now it's not crashing because a site called DynaSearch has taking over the usual Google trademark that used to apesr on my page, this is a search engine that has taken over Fire Fox without my permission correct. How do I get Fire Fox back, and get them off.

Do a malware check with some malware scan programs.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.
