Windows 8.1 on X301

Hi Everybody,
I installed Windows 8.1 RTM on my X301. I managed to have all perepherics to work, only one which is the qualcomm module and GPS.
Can anyone help me on this?
Thanks

1. You should meet some prerequisites
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/system-requirements
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/what-is-pae-nx-sse2
2. Look into hw compatibility list (consult vendor documentation for motherboard and graphics card).
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/compatcenter/home
3. Graphics card may work correctly

  • Installing Windows 7 on an X301 with no optical drive

As the title says - how do you do it?
I know the obvious solution is to buy an external optical drive, but I do not want to buy one specifically for the purpose and then have no use for it thereafter.
Are the following options feasible (or possible!):
    - piggyback off the CDROM drive from your main PC, like a Macbook Air
    - install the OS from a USB stick
    Thank you for all suggestions.

Install from a USB-stick! It's fast, reliant and quiet!
If you are unsure how to create a Windows 7 Installation USB-stick, here's a short guide:
The following how-to assumes that you're working on a computer running Windows Vista or Windows 7 with the Windows 7 ISO or Windows 7 DVD available.
Step 1. Format the USB flash memory drive to FAT32 file system
Run CMD.EXE and type the following commands. Note: This set of commands assumes that the USB flash drive is addressed as “disk 1″. Double check that by doing a list of the disks (type “list disk”) before cleaning it.
       1. diskpart
       2. select disk 1
       3. clean
       4. create partition primary
       5. select partition 1
       6. active
       7. format fs=fat32
       8. assign
       9. exit
Step 2. Copy Windows 7’s DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive
Type in command to start copying all the content from the Windows 7 DVD (or mounted ISO) to your newly formatted high speed flash drive. Note: In this example "d:\" is your Windows 7 DVD, and "e:\" is your USB-stick.
        xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\
Step 3. Setup your computer BIOS to boot from USB Drive
Step 4. Install Windows 7 from your flash memory drive!

  • X301 and Windows 7

    Hello,
I installed Windows 7 on my X301 and have problems with three hardware devices.
One is the fingerprint reader. It is shown in the device manager but I cannot find a vaild driver.
The other two hardware devices I am not able to identify.
Is there a solution for these problems? When will drivers be available for windows 7? (I read the driver announcement post)

Dell's fingerprint suit can be set-up on X301 instead of lenovo's package - works perfect!
now fo Wimedia device (that is wireless LAN) use the one from System Update (it show 2 Wireless LAN packages) that has "64 bit" in the name and ignore the second...
Install Auto features from Sysem Update - that wil properly enable microphone
Don't install registry patches and Vista Component updates...
    Good luck....
P.S. I assume that You running 64bit version of OS... there is no reason to use 32bit on any hardware that allows to run 64bit....

  • X301 wireless broken in Windows 7 (worked in Ubuntu)

I recently did a clean install of windows 7 on my x301. However, I cannot get my WiFi to function properly. I first tried installing the ThinkVantage update software and then I tried installing the drivers manually (after another clean windows 7 install), all to no avail. When I go to Device Manager --> Network Adapters it only lists Bluetooth and Intel(R) 82567 Gigabit Network Connection. Under Other Devices it lists the Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband and the Intel(R) WiMAX Link 5350, but I don't see anything about WiFi. Also, when I press Fn + F5 for my wireless radio power settings, WiFi is similarly missing. I've also tried resetting my bios.
This is extremely frustrating, as I was previously running Ubuntu before the windows 7 install and my wireless was working fine. Any suggestions?

    hey martintwigg,
could you try installing this driver : http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS002396
once done, try again and if you have any errors do reply back and provide a screenshot if possible.

  • X301 New OS question

I bought my X301 before they sold them with the Windows 7 Upgrade coupon things and mine came with Vista. I upgraded to 7 when it came out and it never worked very well as the Thinkvantage button never worked and I lost out on some other features.
I have noticed my SSD is having terrible performance now and was curious if I sent it back to Lenovo under the EasyServ if they would install Windows 7 and do all of the BIOS updates?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I do not understand your question completely, I am guessing that you bought a OEM/Retail Window 7 and installed it? There is nothing wrong with it, and from the four X301 I have owned, it is much better than IMHO than the lenovo supplied recovery discs.I have both your setup (XP/vista) and have the upgrade discs during that period to upgrade to window 7.
The X301 is not under the enhance experience so there would be no difference between normal window 7 and lenovo supplied window 7 recovery discs (for X301).
What you may need to do is to download lenovo software update and install all the latest drivers and utility to bring it back to all the features you want. Obviously there is no blue button recovery function so you would need to use window 7 built in backup software to save your system image, burn a CDROM for recovery, and so on.
The SSD could be suffering from no garbage collection, have you tried running the TRIM/garbage collection software from the manufacturer? Eg Intel and samsung should have their own tools.

  • DVD drive not visible in Windows

I installed Windows 7 on my X301 machine.
I am not seeing the DVD drive in Windows Explorer.
I used the DVD drive to install the Windows 7.  And I can see the DVD Drive in the BIOS.
I tried all those options from on-line such as:
The upperfilter - did not have this setting in regedit
The lower filter - did not have this setting in regedit
Using the F8 key to turn off the security checking etc

Maybe assign a drive letter to it might be the issue the upper and lower filter issue had a tool I used once but that was a while ago

  • X301 battery reset question

I've been trying to reset the battery gauge on my Thinkpad X301 (Windows 7).
The reset function does run the battery down and then recharge it, but the test is never officially ended, even when left running for days. The Battery Maintenance windows remains on the the screen, with the "stop battery gauge reset" button waiting to be pressed.
Perhaps related is that my laptop keeps entering the sleep function during this test. Is that normal, or acceptable? It does this even when I instruct Power Manager to keep the laptop alive at all times.
I haven't been able to find any documentation that would explain these questions. In fact I can't tell whether this is a Thinkpad function or a Windows 7 function!
Can you anyone provide some advice?

  • Reinstall Windows 7 on a new HD - on a G570

    This is nerve racking...
I have a G570, where the hard drive went bad. I have purchased a new hard drive, and would like to install it and reinstall Windows 7 that came pre-installed on the system. Without physical media, can someone tell me how to go about doing this?
    Thanks.

    Hi Charles,
If your hard drive isn't totally gone, you might be able to burn a set of restore discs using OKR.  Here's an article.
As far as the clean MS install, the key on the laptop will work.  You still have to enter the key,  it's just that just entering the key won't activate Windows.
You have to use the phone option.  It takes about 10 minutes.  I had to do it a couple of times.
Or, you can use a program to back up the Windows activation so it automagically activates.  There's a thread around here, I'll try to find the link.
    Here it is:  Windows 7

  • Flash crashes Windows 7 Pro 64 bit IE11. Lenovo X301 laptop with Intel Graphics. Confirmed it happen

My company has several Lenovo X301 laptops with Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) running IE11. I load clean versions of Flash onto these laptops (latest version 12.0.0.77) and every single one of these laptops crashes when opening IE11.
One thing I noticed when I used the help.adobe.com site. Using IE11, the box which "dynamically displays the following information" shows the correct version of Flash player and OS but the browser says "None". If I run Chrome, it says the correct Flash version but the OS says "Windows 7 (32 bit) and the browser correctly says "Google Chrome".
The crash report for IE11, module name is Flash32_12_0_0_77.ocx.
    1. Why is the program unable to determine the correct browser?
    2. Why does it appear that a 64 bit program is trying to use a 32 bit plug-in?
    Any ideas?

    1. "User-Agent Strings"
Microsoft "rewrote" the User-Agent Strings for the abomination they call their latest and greatest browser. User-Agent Strings are what websites use to identify the browser you're using and provide the proper content for it's browser engine, like ActiveX stuff, and Flash or HTML5 video. Thanks to the geniuses in Redmond, WA, the User-Agent Strings for IE11 (which has a Trident engine), ID it as either "Gecko" (Firefox) or "Webkit" (Chrome). Problem is: when the site the directs to the content for one of these two engines, the Trident engine in IE can't intepret it and the site then sees IE as an "unidentified" browser.Microsoft has no immediate plans to "fix" the mess they've created.
    2. Chrome is a 32 bit browser, and will identify as such, including the plug-ins in it.
IE uses the plug-in from the SyWOW64 folder (WOW=Windows On WIndows - which runs 32 bit apps in the 64 bit environment)

  • X301 (Type 2774) - optical drive not recongized under windows 7

    Dear Lenovo Community,
I have a specific problem regarding my optical drive - hope someone can help! I installed windows 7 on my lenovo X301 2774-AH5 - since then the optical drive is not recognized any more by the operation system (everything worked out fine beforehand under XP). In a first attempt I ordered a new drive - but the problem persisted - sent the new drive back and re-inserted the original drive. The device manager lists the drive (Mathsita DVD-RAM UJ-844) and reports the following regarding the device status:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
The following driver is currently installed:
Microsoft, installed: 21/06/2006; driver version: 6.1.7601.17514
I tried to install the latest driver via the lenovo web-page:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?
However, no drivers seem to be available for the combination: X301 / windows 7 / optical drives.
    Any suggestions?
    With many thanks and greetings,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I’m sorry to hear that Optical drive of your Lenovo ThinkPad X301 is not recognized in Windows 7.
Is the optical drive powered on?
Ensure that optical drive is enabled in BIOS. Go to control panel -> Device manager and uninstall the driver listed under DVD/CD-ROM drives. Reboot the system, scan for hardware changes and check if the optical drive is working fine.
If the above said didn’t help to resolve your concern, try doing a registry edit. Refer this Microsoft KB article and follow the instructions.
    Hope this helps!
    Best regards,
    Mithun.

  • Windows 7, Thinkvantage issues on X301

Where to post a note tike this! No doubt it will be moved if in the wrong place!
X301 with clean install of W 7 professional 64 bit, then updated using System Update 4 as supplied by lenovo as part of the upgrade program.  All devices working fine under Windows 7 control (eg, WWAN, power, wireless connections). Issues with ThinkVantage Technologies as follows:
After about a week, Access connections reverted to a single Wireless Connection service profile and would never allow wireless connections to be made.  Windows 7 was happily making them anyway!.
Access Connections, Think Vantage toolbox toolbars take no notice of the "small icons" settings for the task bar.  Power manager icon behaves fine.
If I change screen brightness using FnHome when on battery power and shut the machine down in this changed state, the screen remains at this brightness regardless of power source when subsequently booted. Have to reset to defaults in Power manager to regain normality.  Whether this is a "feature" or not, it is a pain.
I've decided to ditch Access Connections for now, and the toolbars can be turned off. I have to say that  I'm struggling to see the advantage of some of the Thickvantage technologies in W7. Your views may differ!

  • Upgrading my X301 to Windows 7

I have decided to upgrade my Lenovo ThinkPad X301 to Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.
I want a new/clean installation and have saved all my files & folders to a USB HDD. The question is, shall I now run the ThinkVantage rescue & recovery console and then run the Windows 7 upgrade from there of shall I just format the HDD and install Windows 7 on a new partition?
Many thanks for your anticipated help!
    Iain

Struggled with this for many, many hours.  A combination of people's tips got me to my solution:
    1)  Go to CONTROL PANELS -> DEVICES AND PRINTERS and remove the printer.
    2)  Download the new Windows 7 driver from the HP site (version 13 released on January 15).
    3)  Install the driver (I installed the HP OFFICEJET PRO BASIC DRIVER).
    4)  After the driver is installed, go to CONTROL PANELS -> DEVICES AND PRINTERS and double-click on the K8600 printer.
    5)  Double-click on the "Customize your printer" option.
    6)  Choose the "Advanced tab".
    7)  Click on the "Print Processor" button.
    8)  Choose the "winprint" print processor option (I left the Default data type as "RAW").
That fixed the problem for me!
Thanks for everyone's help on this forum!

  • Hibernate drains battery 20% per day - X301 Windows 7

I have an X301  2777 CTO with the factory larger battery.  SSD   Running Windows 7.  All Windows patches up to date.  All BIOS and drivers up to date.  Reinstalled Power Management.  When I put the laptop into hibernate it drains the battery at a rate of about 20% per day.  The machine behavior is that of Hibernate and not Sleep.
I have an open support case but w/o a resolution as yet.
    Any ideas?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Lenovo ask me to download several new drivers and install them which I did.  No Help.  Then I took the battery completely out to see if it held a charge for a few days to rule out the battery as the problem.  The Battery held the charge when it was out of the machine.   Called back Lenovo and was now told 25% a day loss was norm for hibernate mode.  I said not true with all the ThinkPad’s in the past and perhaps he is thinking of sleep mode.
Unbelievably,  and I had been very polite, I was told “well if you don’t believe me” and he hung up!
I called back later that day and was told by a nice lady that I was correct and hibernate should not drain the battery anywhere near the extent I was experiencing.   I was promised a Level 2 Tech would call back.  Still waiting.
I’m a fair size ThinkPad buying company but they are alienating me.
I am also going to try shutting the machine down as opposed to hibernate to see if the battery drains when the machine has shut down but the battery is still in place.
Would like any input from other x301 users on this.   I will post if resolved -or if- not.

  • Windows 7 X301 Music Device Drivers Issue

I am having issues with 3 Devices. they are all Akai items (LPD8, LPK25, MPK25).
The items work perfectly on 6 other win7 machines - install with no issues. The X301 is the only problem child. These devices use generic drivers - there are no specific drivers for them. on the machines that work the following drivers are used:
    dmk.sys
    ksthunk.sys
    portcls.sys
    usbaudio.sys
    sysfxui.dll
    wmalfxgfxdsp.dll
somhow this won;t work on the OS on the lenovo. 'driving' me nuts.
    ideas?

one more detail on the dirvers themselves.
This items are all using the generic 'USB Audio Device' Driver - so please don't say - go to the manufacturer's site :-)
this driver seems completely unavailable on this one machine - even though all the supporting files are there. In addtion, it can't seem to get it from Windows update.
