Windows 8 Fresh Install on Yoga 13

I have spent several hours now reading on how to do a fresh Windows 8 install on the Yoga  13.  I have the newer Yoga 13 with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.
I have a 32GB USB thumb drive and access to my TechNet media.  I ensured the thumb drive was formatted in FAT32, I copied the contents from the Windows 8 ISO to the thumb drive, and ensured UEFI boot was ENABLED on my Yoga.  I put the thumb drive in the 2.0 port, turn the laptop on, and it just sits at the "Lenovo" splash screen.  Sometimes that screen will refresh itself.  You can hit F12 to go to boot menu but the screen will then go black, and refresh back to the Lenovo splash screen.
I've tried many other options:
Setting BIOS to Legacy
Disabling Secure Boot
Ensuring Legacy is priority boot
Nothing is working.
I'm not sure what I'm missing here.  Could I simply have a faulty thumb drive?  It works on my other computers as regular storage just fine.
I'm ready to use this awesome hybrid device but I want it without the bloat ware.  Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I'm completely stumped with this.  Throughout my 15 year IT career I've done plenty of installs.  I've had no problems in the past with creating bootable USB drives for Windows 7.  I've scoured these forums and found the other topics where people have installed Windows 8 from USB on their Yoga's.  I've followed those steps to the "T" and still not having success.  I'm starting to suspect my USB drive but it works perfectly fine as typical storage.
I've used the WIndows 7 USB\DVD utility, WinToFlash, and the Diskpart methods.  No success.
I have valid TechNet media and licenses.
I've disabled secure boot and set to legacy mode and every combination in between.
Here is where I am at:
Ive successfully created a bootable USB drive with Windows 8 Pro (using the tools listed above)
Secure boot is disabled - UEFI is enabled
Insert the USB Drive in the 2.0 port
Power on
The Lenovo splash screen with the F2 / F12 prompt will display for about 3 seconds then go completely black for about 3 seconds then display the Lenovo splash screen again.  It will repeat this for as long as I let it.
I can hit F2 or F12 and it will say "entering..." but the screen will go black and display the splash screen again but never go into setup or the boot menu.  If I remove the USB drive during this time, the laptop will successfully boot.
I'm going out and buying a new USB 3.0 thumb drive just to eliminate the drive as a potential source of problem.
I also have a call out to Lenovo software support.  They were busy so Im expecting a call back at this point.
I'm just reaching out to the community for help on this.  Experience tells me its something small or minor I'm over looking.  This is my first time dealing with UEFI \ Windows 8\ Secure Boot.
Thanks in advance for any help provided.

  • SSD showing in bios but not during windows fresh install.

    Hello all,
    Currently I built a new computer.
    I-5 4760k
    8gigs Cosiar Vengance
    750 watt power supply
    MSI g45 gaming mobo
    GTX 770
    I'm trying to use the computer off a new Samsung evo 120. I want to do a fresh install of windows 7 on it. The bios picks it up, but it's not an option to install when I try to do a fresh install of windows 7.. Kind of at a loss here of what to  do, is there an option on the mobo I need to set in order for it to be detected?

    Sounds one of the following problems:
    1.) The drive is formatted MBR w/ win 8 features enabled / legacy disabled.
    2.) A "dynamic" drive is present.

  • Lost Beats Audio Control Panel, Windows Experience Index and HP Power Manager on fresh install...

    HP Pavilion m6-1035dx, product B5S06UA#ABA
    Please help! I installed a 240gb SanDisk Extreme SSD and a fresh install of Win 7 home premium 64-bit OEM. I did not reinstall the factory OS and all that goes along with it. I have managed to reinstall all drivers (it seems) but am having the following problems: 1) I have installed IDT HD Audio Driver sp56953 but it does not provide the Beats Audio control panel, any idea how to get it? 2) The Windows Experience Index will not provide a performance evaluation, something in the system is providing it with an error message when it attempts to rate the system and it stops. 3) I have installed HP Power Manager sp57398 and can bring up the control panel but the changes I indicate will not stay applied, when I bring up Power Manager again it show that no selections are made. I knew this fresh install was going to provide headaches, please help if you can. Thanks.

    I suspect this may all be related to a common cause.
    When updating the windows experience index, what is the error message you receive?
    Has the video card driver been installed? It is necessary for the windows experience index to complete.
    Also, ensure the HP Software Framework is installed.  It is under the Software Solutions category.
    You did a clean install of Windows 7. Has all the software and drivers for Windows 7 from HP been installed? Here is a link should you need it.

  • Satellite L655 - Sound not working on fresh install of Windows 7 Pro x64

    Howdy all,
    I purchased an L655-S5111 from Newegg that was on sale, put an SSD into it, and then installed a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Professional 64-bit I received from my current employer (I'm an IT guy). I've updated to the latest BIOS revision (1.70), and I've got all Windows updates installed, all drivers installed, including the correct Conexant HD Audio and ATI HDMI Audio drivers. Unfortunately, sound does not work. Sound worked briefly when I first installed Windows 7, then I muted it until I could get it set up with headphones. When I unmuted it, it had ceased to work.
    This laptop is less than 3 weeks old at this point, and I get no audio over headphones or speakers, although Windows clearly shows no issues with the drivers, they're the latest version, on a fresh install, and I can see the audio in the mixer playing. The microphone built-in to the laptop does pick up sound as well. I believe that this is most likely not an issue of physical interconnection, but more likely a software level issue, I'm just having trouble identifying where it is at.
    I also have no related error messages anywhere in the event logs.

    I have two problems with installing the recovery image:
    1) I didn't get a copy of the recovery media with the system
    2) The recovery media would install Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit which is what came with the laptop.
    Since I have legitimately licensed copies of Windows 7 Pro/Enterprise 64-bit, I would much rather install that. Since I used the drivers and software from the Toshiba website for this particular model, it should be working. There should be no functional difference between the recovery media and a fresh Windows install from the Microsoft-provided Windows media and Toshiba provided drivers from their website.
    As you can see in the sysinfo (I'm assuming Keany the respondent is the admin that approved my post and edited it, thus had access to the data which was removed) I have all the Toshiba software and drivers installed, identically to if this was the recovery image, I just have it on a different edition of Windows 7.
    I'm open to any other suggestions, but unfortunately it is not possible to do the above.

Thinking this would not happen on Win7 and wanting to upgrade anyway I went to Win7 and I still have the same issue, except I dont: now Itunes doesn't stall it just doesn't see the iphone and try to synch. It would stall at synching. I read somewhere to delete podcasts which I did which I think worked itunes doesn't see the phone. Windows does and I can see and transfer photos and movies but no itunes syncing.

  • Install optional driver updates from Windows Update for IdeaPad Yoga 13?

    Windows Update on IdeaPad Yoga 13 - Windows 8.1 (64-bit) suggests two optional updates:
    Conexant - Audio Device - Conexant SmartAudio HD
    10.01.2014
    Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000
    Intel Corporation Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.3 software update released in May, 2014
    04.06.2014
    Should I install those updates or should I keep the original drivers?
    The original drivers from Lenovo "Drivers and software" section (http://support.lenovo.com/de_DE/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS032590) seem to be older/outdated:
    Conexant Audio Driver for 64-bit Windows
    8.65.3.53 10/22/2013
    Integrated Graphics Driver for 64-bit Windows
    Windows 8.1 (64-bit)
    9.17.10.2843 10/23/2012
    Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows
    10.18.10.3282 10/22/2013

    Windows Update has now another update for "Intel Corporation Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1" and still no updates on the Lenovo site.
    So I tried the the drivers from Windows Update and it seems that every thing is still working fine.

  • Fresh Install Windows 7 x64 IE 9 Flash Player Crash

    Greetings All,
    I am working on a major imaging prject for my organization.  I'm getting ready to create a new image for some of our machines so I was getting the reference computers ready.  I have noticed that when flash player is enabled in IE 9 it crashes the browser.  I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped working" error.  I can click the close program button, IE will try to launch the same page again and i get the error again with a bar on the bottome of the IE window stating "A problem with this webpage caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab".  After a few rounds of this I get the "Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website."  This is occuring on two different machines that I have been preping.
    Here are the details of what I have done to these machines:  (Dell E6420 and Dell E6320)
    1.  Installed Windows 7 x64 from install media (blanked the drive so fresh install)
    2.  Installed SEP 11.0.6200.754
    3.  Installed all drivers fresh off of Dell's website.
    4.  Installed Office 2010.
    5.  Ran and updated EVERYTHING from MICROSOFT update, SP1 and IE 9 included.
    6.  Went to Adobe.com and installed the latest Acrobat, Flash, and Shockwave Player from the links on the main page.
    7.  Rebooted and now anytime I go to any page with Flash objects I get the above error.
    Here are version:
    Windows 7 x64 SP1
    IE 9.0.8112.16421
    Shockwave Flash Object (Enabled in Manage Add-ons) 10.2.159.1
    As said these are two brand new machines, two fresh loads, two batches of software fresh from the web, and two machines having unacceptable problems when Flash is installed.  What's up here?
    Many Thanks for your time!

    I’m going to take a moment and do two things, bump the thread, and provide a short synopsis on where we stand on this issue.
    After much trial and error and the help of Chris I can say with relative certainty that this is an issue with compatibility between nVidia’s Optimus systems and Flash player’s hardware acceleration feature.  I don’t know if the issue is just IE9 or IE8.  I haven’t taken the time to try this on an Optimus system with IE 8 yet.  If someone out there is running one of the Optimus enabled laptops with IE8 and the latest flash installed I would love to hear some feed back.
    Ultimately IE8 vs. IE9 is an inconsequential issue.  Soon Microsoft will start pushing IE 9 as an important update meaning that the problem will need to be fixed or we’ll be faced with more users having the problem.
    I have posted about the issue in the nVidia forums, Dell forums, and Adobe forums.  Please find the links to the threads below.  I don’t believe the issue to be unique to just the two Dell models that I am dealing with.  I have run across numerous complaints along this line from several different OEMs.

  • Fresh Install of Windows 8.1 on HP Pavilion a4313w freezes randomly

    I've done four fresh installs of Windows 8.1 on the HP Pavilion a4313 Desktop PC in our home and it always freezes randomly. Even in safe mode, it freezes. I've done hardware tests with BurnIn Test 8.0 and everything including the hardware memory is fine. Antivirus is installed and it's completely updated with Windows Updates. Once I installed the 32-bit version of Windows 8.1 and it still froze. I performed a fresh install, because it would hang sometimes with Windows 7.
    Anyways, I am more then ready and willing to post more information or test results upon request. Anyone have suggestions?

    Hello @buddhapunk36,
    I understand that your computer running Windows 8.1 keeps freezing and you have run the hardware tests and it comes back okay. I would suggest that you try installing the original Windows 7 that came with your computer and see if the freezing continues. If it does continue the the issue appears to be a physical issue. Please call our technical support at 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region, please click the link below to get the support number for your region. http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-phone-assist.html.
    If the issue does not continue then your system may not be compatible with Windows 8.1.

  • Fresh Install of Windows 8.1 on rMBP mid 2012

    Seeing how there are issues about bootcamp and windows 8.1, anyone know if a fresh install of Windows 8.1 (non-pro) will work on a rMBP mid 2012 model using the usual bootcamp instructions? Or will I have to do a workaround to get it installed?

    That is what I fear. I've heard issues about installing windows 8.1 directly (though most seem to be about the 2013 MBPs, unsure of my model), and considering it's impossible for me to get a copy of windows 8 and upgrade through the store (the optimal solution) now, I'm left with installing 8.1 right from the get-go. Anyone else have success/experience going through the 8.1 route on 2012 MBPs?

  • HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC Cannot Install Cyberlink PowerDirector on Fresh Install Windows 8.1

    HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC
    Product number: F5D54EA#ABU
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
    I replaced the original system drive with a SSD, fresh install of wndows 8.1 (not recovery disk), now I canot install Cyberlink PowerDirector downloaded from HP sp69386. During installation it fails with "This is not a valid HP drive, Setup will now abort" It obviously requires something to be available on the drive but I don't know what.
    PowerDVD will install just fine.
    Please don't mention a Recovery Install it's taken too long to arrive at this stage.
    The question is what is the software looking for during installation to satisfy itself that this is a genuine HP laptop and can I replicate that on the SSD.

    Hi @Darren104
    Welcome to the HP Support Community. I saw your post regarding the problem installing the Cyberlink PowerDirector software. As the PowerDirector software is DVD software I can't see how a new SSD would cause the “not a valid HP driver” if you had changed out your optical drive then maybe. • Windows 7 Ultimate (64-Bit) fresh install, only WLAN and video driver installed but EXTREMELY slow internet connection...

    I recently checked my internet connection on my Asus G53SW and found that it was extremely slow on both the LAN and WLAN connections. I checked with a different laptop (old HP Pavilion) and I get a steady 74mbps+ connection using the same LAN cable and
    also with the WLAN connection. My ISP has checked their side and everything is fine.
    To try and resolve the issue I tried uninstalling, disabling and tweaking various software and even tried safe mode with networking, all to no avail. I then decided to do a complete fresh install this afternoon. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit)
    successfully onto my SSD and everything went smoothly. I have now only installed Nvidia video drivers and the (only) WLAN driver from the Asus support site.
    My WLAN connection remains incredibly slow (amost half what it is on the HP and my MacBook Pro). Clearly this is an issue with either the Asus laptop or Windows but I don't know how to proceed in order to eliminate which it could be other than to try a different
    o/s to W7-Ult.
    Can anyone help who knows more about this than me? Perhaps someone who has had a similar or the same problem because this is giving me a severe headache!
    Thanks in advance to all and for any advice.
    <script id="ncoEventScript" type="text/javascript">function DOMContentLoaded(browserID, tabId, isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) { object.DOMContentLoaded(browserID,

    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

    Thank you for responding. As I stated in my original post the reason I went through this process was because of an extremely slow internet connection from both the WLAN and LAN connections on my G53SW. At that time I had all of the correct drivers on the
    machine. Whilst I would agree that with the machine only having a video and WLAN driver it may well not be working 'optimally', the rationale for doing this was to get the machine working with the minimum of processes to show that it was not anti-virsu software,
    Steam or the like causing interference.
    I have changed out both of the HDDs this evening (a primary SSD and a secondary 1Tb HDD) for a clean hybrid 1Tb Seagate drive. Once I have installed all of the Asus drivers (and nothing else) I will try the speed test again and report back.
    I can now report that with a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 and ONLY Asus drivers as supplied the issue remains. On a connection where I should see around 75mbps I am actually getting around 18mbps, sometimes considerably slower. This only affects
    my Asus machine.
    <script id="ncoEventScript" type="text/javascript">function DOMContentLoaded(browserID, tabId, isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) { object.DOMContentLoaded(browserID,

    isTop, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw"); if(null != object) object.NavigateComplete(BrowserID, TabID, isTop, url); } function Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url) { var object = document.getElementById("cosymantecnisbfw");
    if(null != object) object.Submit(browserID, tabID, target, url); }; </script>

  • [Serious BUG] Youtube crashes to death; fresh Windows 7 install; firefox and plugins updated; plugin-container.exe disabled; noway

    This happens to me and to two friends of mine. So it's hardly a coincidence.
    I have done a fresh Windows 7 install (for other reasons) so I thought this problem (which I had since about version 8.0) would disappear. I was wrong.
    Firefox and plugins are updated:
    Firefox 13.0
    Shockwave Flash 11.3 r300
    GPU video drivers are also updated.
    I came across the "plugin-container.exe solution" but it didn't solve the problem.
    How to reproduce the bug.
    Visit Youtube and click on some video. Minimize Firefox. Wait some seconds. Next time you restore the window Firefox crashes, you have to kill plugin-container.exe from the task manager OR you have to restart the entire browser in case you've disabled the plugin container.
    The same bug should occur when having various tabs open and one of them is Youtube with a video playing. But also when Firefox has no focus and you have other windows on top of it (and a Flash video running or even paused).
    Since this does happen:
    -with a fresh install;
    -with everything updated;
    -even disabling the plugin controller;
    it seems very very strange to me that this problem is STILL present since version 8.0 (or even before) and that there is so few reports of this bug around the internet.
    I'm not complaining here, I'm just showing my perplexity about almost noone having this bug which is ruining my (and my friends') Firefox experience since the past years.
    My purpose here is:
    * to let you know about this problem;
    * to know if other are experiencing it;
    * hopefully to keep giving support to this thread and answer to your questions about this bug so to help this thing being fixed;

    For problems that occurred with Flash 11.2 and earlier, you might want to consider disabling graphics hardware acceleration in both Flash and Firefox.
    '''Flash'''
    Right-click any video in Flash Player and choose Settings.
    Clear the checkbox for "Enable hardware acceleration"
    '''Firefox'''
    Save all work (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
    On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    Restart Firefox.

  • Windows 8.1 file history - Restore to fresh install

    Hi Everyone
    I'm trying to understand the benefits of file history. As Windows 8.1 doesn't allow me to create a system image on a schedule anymore, I now have to resort to file history.
    Hypothetical Scenario: OS hard disk catches fire, melts down and is not repairable. The good news! I enabled file history of everything I wanted to "save".
    How does one import that "history" back into a fresh install on a new disk? Normally on windows 7, an image could just be written back and presto! the job is done
    Does that make sense?
    Any help would be appreciated. If this isn't entirely possible, I'll end up tossing my OS disk(SSD into a raid 1)

    Hi,
    Since Windows 8.1 took away the scheduling feature in System image backup, so as Henrik_Dahl mentioned in the previous reply, we can manually create a scheduled task.
