Use the recovery media that you should have created to reinstall the original operating system. It should self activate when you connect to the internet.

Here's my problem. Windows 8 came preinstalled on my computer; however, I accidently deleted the Windows 8 key from the bios and now Windows keeps asking me to enter the correct key. Since there is no longer a sticker with the key included with the computer I have no way of finding the key. Does HP keep a record of the keys tagged to the serial number? Or am I just out of luck?
I called HP Support about this and they told me to get the key off the CDs which were included with the computer. When I told him there were no CDs, he said I had bought a used computer mascarading as new because all of their computers ship with Windows CDs. When I disputed this he said that Microsoft could solve the issue for me. Microsoft said that HP could solve it. Can anyone help me? I'd rather not spend money on buying Windows 8
Thanks in advance,
Mike
This question was solved.
View Solution.HP does not retain records of the keys issued . HP also does not ship Windows CD's with the computers unless they were specifically ordered. If you have somehow deleted the key then you are out of luck, sorry.

Windows 8.1 Serial Key Issue
Hello
I recently made a Windows Refresh to restore mi PC without destroying my files, everything went fine, except that now it asks me to Activate Windows and I don't have the Serial Key because Windows 8 was installed from fabric.
I got the notebook 2 years ago as a gift and it was purchased in the US, but I live in México, I tried calling the HP support number in México but they told me that I needed to contact the US support.
I hope you can help me find a solution because I really need my Notebook working for my School Projects.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Note: Here are some screenshots of what I see in the Windows 8 setting menu.Try finding your Product Key using Produkey
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/produkey-x64.zip
Then hold down your Windows key and hit 'R'
Type SLUI 3 then Enter
Type your Product Key in the space provided and hope that it activates Windows, if not it may invite you to use the telephone and you should find a number for Mexico. Be prepared to enter lots of digits, it helps if you have speaker facility on your phone... -
Tecra M10 - Stuck CTRL key issue -- perhaps to do with BIOS?
Hello and thanks for reading.
I recently switched my Tecra M10 to Windows 7 (from XP) and it soon developed the dreaded "stuck CTRL key" issue. This causes the keyboard to behave as if the CTRL key is permanently depressed. Sometimes hitting a combination of keys, or bringing up the onscreen keyboard, temporarily solves the issue, but then it returns.
It seems to be an issue many people have, with no simple solution. I've looked at every thread about it I can find, and tried many things to do with drivers etc. without any success.
So firstly, if anyone knows a remedy that works for this particular machine, I would be very grateful to learn it!
Then, there are two things I've not yet done: update BIOS and disable pinch zoom.
I was looking at the following BIOS update:
http://www.toshiba-asia.com/sg/support/drivers/details/25244
... which is version 3.00 and seems to be most recent. My own version is 1.90.
However version 3.00 is labelled "For PTMB0* ONLY". I don't know what this means or whether it applies to me. Can anyone help? Should I install this BIOS?
For the pinch zoom, I've been told that disabling it does sometimes cure the CTRL problem -- but I can't find any pinch zoom facility on the M10. I suspect it simply doesn't have one. Is that right?
Many thanks for any help you can give.Hi
> I was looking at the following BIOS update. which is version 3.00 and seems to be most recent. My own version is 1.90.
There are different Tecra M10 models on the market.
Check the labels at the bottom of the unit. There you should find some numbers like for example PTMB0E-01K00LGR
The first 6 characters are important: for example PTMB0E
I assume your notebook belongs to European series.
In such case you should check the Toshiba EU driver page for possible BIOS update.
http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp
However, on Toshiba EU driver page you will find also the BIOS v3.0 for all European Tecra M10 units.
Anyway, back to the CTRL button issue: guess what, you should connect an external USB keyboard and should check how the CTRL button acts.
In case the USB keyboard would work properly, the CTRL button of internal keyboard is affected and you will need to replace the internal keyboard.
PS: it could be possible that the option "sticky keys" has been enabled. To disable this function, you have to press SHIFT button 5 times in the row. -
Had a technical issue with a crashed application, so tried a rollback to a stable point in time. Went OK and solved the problem I had, but absolutely screwed up Windows 10.
Pressing the windows key does nothing. Pressing the start icon does nothing. I can't type in anything in "Search web and windows". If I run something like calculator, it appears and then vanishes before I see anything other than a blank window.
All the new apps are completely stuffed, but all the normal Windows 10 functions are otherwise fine. I can run control panel ( Can't run update - that's an App ) - I can run command prompt OK. Programs work fine ( just not apps ). I think a critical
update is missing and severely screwed things up, but I can't update because that's busted. Anything that's not Windows 7-ish doesn't work anymore - like it doesn't exist.
Yeah, I know some people will say that's an improvement but too much stuff needs the new system and I want it all back - :( How do I fix it without a complete system rebuild?
Thanks
David.......... I think a critical update is missing and severely screwed things up, but I can't update because that's busted. ..............
To do Windows Updates without Start Menu, try this method given by Insider Hub:
To check for updates without the Start menu, do the following:
Select the Internet Explorer icon.
Type http://update.microsoft.com into the address bar and select
Enter.
If you are prompted to run a control, click
Yes.
This should bring up the Check for updates window. Install updates.
If no update is available, or the available updates don’t fix the issue, restart the device–this should make the Start menu appear. To reboot without using the Start menu:
Hold down the Windows key and select L to lock the device. Swipe up or select
Enter to open the sign in screen. Select the
Power icon on the log in screen to restart the computer.
OR
Hold down the Windows key and select R to bring up a command prompt. In the prompt, type
shutdown –r to restart
If that does not work, perhaps a reinstall is in order. -
I bought my T400 2764-CTO in last December, and started using it on mini dock without any problem. Until recently, it starts to show stuck key issue randomly (not always failure) both at boot up or under Windows Vista.
ERROR
0210 Stuck Key FF
Press <F1> to SetUp
Note: the stuck key keeps changing, sometimes 13, sometimes 1F, sometimes other key.
I opened the laptop, and checked the connection of the keyboard but couldn't locate any problem there. Can this be a keyboard issue? Or even a motherboard issue?
Can Lenovo swap a new keyboard for me? If so, what do I need to do then?
Thanks!
Best RegardsYou can call Lenovo service, and log a service call, they will make the necessary arrangements. If you are not confident with bios update then please don't do it youself, and let the warranty department do it for you, as any mistakes can make your laptop useless and you will be paying couple hundreds of euros to get the motherboard replaced.

Windows Key Arrow Keys Shortcut?
Hello!
Installed Windows 10 a few days ago and the Win+Arrow shortcut was working but has stopped working. Both the Windows key and the arrow keys function independently and my Ease of Access Mouse settings are proper in terms of Aero Snapping windows and checkboxes
and stuff. Also I insured that Turn off Windows+x HotKeys in the Local Policy Editor wasn't enabled. I'm not sure if I'm just reporting this or asking for a solution or what, but I mean it'd be cool if I could arrange windows again. If anyone needs any
other information just ask.
Thank you.Hi,
Snapping Windows with Win + Arrow keys worked on my test machines. Some folks have shared that it won’t work in the Windows 10 Technical Preview 9860 version. Even after a restart, it would came back and won’t work again after a while.
Another thing is please make sure we have installed the additional updates after we update to Windows 10 Technical Preview 9860.
KB3010668 and KB3008956. Go to PC settings ->Update and Recovery -> Windows update, click check for updates and then install if available.
For the Windows keyboard shortcut not working properly, we have another thread here:
snap assist doesnt work on build 9860
By now there seems no workaround to resolve this issue. Please wait for the future builds.
Best regards

Multi Monitor - Windows Key + Left/Right not working?
Hi everyone,
Just checking whether it's just me or other people having this issue (I can't find a similar thread for the Windows 10 Technical Preview).
Windows Key + Left/Right does not seem to snap to another monitor. On my setup it continually cycles on the monitor it's already on (Left/Mid/Right), but does not jump across to the next monitor when it hits the end.
Is this an intended change in the Technical Preview? Is anyone else having the same behaviour? If not, any suggestions on troubleshooting it?
Thanks!Apparently this is an intended part of the new virtual desktop system. It also affects the Shift-Win-Up maximizing the window, and Shift-Win-Down minimizing it... they now function with a double-tap of the Up or Down. But unfortunately Shift-Win-Left
or Right will just move around on whichever single screen the application is now on, regardless of how many monitors you actually have.
Just to clarify, do you mean the feature to snap/cycle to other monitors was intentionally removed? Or due to other changes to snap it's had this adverse affect?
The ability to Windows Key + move to other monitors is highly useful, and often much quicker than dragging/dropping to move to another monitor. I hope this is just an oversight and will be reverted!
Thanks to others for your feedback and info too, glad to know I'm not the only one encountering this issue. -
Mapping the "Windows" key in Gnome
Hi,
I want to use the Windows key for several keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Win+E to open Nautilus). By default it's not working. I found a solution described on the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/GN … ows.22_key
I applied it, and it works ... but not quite. It's quite a strange behaviour.
The following works:
1. Press the "Windows" key and keep it pressed
2. Press the E key
3. Release the E key
4. Release the "Windows" key
The following does not work:
1. Press the "Windows" key and keep it pressed
2. Press the E key
3. Release the "Windows" key
4. Release the E key
Has anybody experienced something like this? Any idea what's wrong here?

Last edited by roti (2013-06-06 20:58:13)What happens if you just press and release the 'Windows' key on its own? I seem to recall a similar issue a long time ago, and I think it turned out that the 'Windows' key alone was activating the hotkey function.

Windows key inoperative dv7-4285 windows 7 - 64 bit. only key not working
Windows key inoperative dv7-4285 Windows 7 - 64 bit. The Windows key is the only key not working.
Thanks for the information,
I have a couple of suggestions that may help with this issue. My first suggestion would be to uninstall and reinstall the drivers for the keyboard.
Follow these steps to do that:
Click the "Start Menu"
Type "Device" in the search box under all programs
Select "Device Manager"
Click "Keyboards"
Remove all devices under keyboards by right clicking and selecting" uninstall" on each device
Restart the computer
How long has the button not been working?
Are there any other keys not working or producing the wrong character?

Windows key rubbed off on my sticker!
HP pavilion DV4-1543sb
Win 7 64-bit
Hello!
I am hoping to do a fresh reinstall of my computer to hopeflly solve some issues I've been having with it. As I was reading the steps to do a fresh windows install, it said that I would need the activation key which is located on the sticker on the bottom of my laptop. Unfortuantely, the text on the paper sticker has rubbed off! Not expecting this to happen, I had never written it down.
I have taken a picture of the sticker, but don't want to post it on a public forum as it includes my product key as well.
Any tips on figuring out my key another way, or providing me with a replacement? Some of the numbers are still legible.
Thanks!Hi There,
HP gives option for customers to create recovery media for OS re-installation, hope you have the disc created with you. if yes, Ideally disc does not prompt for any windows keys and installation should go smooth without any error.Alternatively, you can order a set of recovery media via phone/email support, using which makes notebook as good as factory installed OS setup.
Also, if you try to install OS using retail version of OS, key available in the bottom of notebook does not work as it’s a OEM key.
Hope it helps.
Thank you,
Waseem – HP 2LS

WW

X201 upgrade to ssd = pay $50 for new windows key!!! Shame
A bit of a rant but hope some of you can learn from my mistake.
x201 oem hd was going out so i replaced a new ssd, sounds simple right?
Downloaded windows 7 home premium and entered the key on the bottom of my notebook and windows says the key is invalid.
Chat with microsoft and they said it is an oem version of windows and therefor I needed to speak to lenovo
Spoke to Lenovo, had a nice person on the phone, and they said:
-"well the windows key you have is to a version that is like half of windows"
- I'm thinking to myself well there was no option to pay for only half of it when i brought it
- lenovo rep "you need the recovery disks etc"
- I explained x201 has no cd drive, and never did receive any disc
- lenovo rep says "well you will need to buy a cdrom drive to usb, and also buy a recovery disc from us. If you had asked for a disc while you were in waranty we would have sent it free. But unfortunately now its $50. Sorry I'm sure we knew we didn't send the discs on purpose but thats what they have been doing"
Really bad tactics from Lenevo here.
1. I now need to pay $50 for what I already paid for!
2. Customer didn't really know they only got half of windows
3. Customer paid for full windows?
And to think I just brought the company some more thinkpad notebooks.. maybe its time to take my business elsewhere. Shame for such pettiness as they do build solid machines, even though I have had a bit of trouble with mine.I am going to stick an oar in here because this is misunderstood by many, including myself until recently.
I know the tech support person told you that what you get is a half version of windows, that is not entirely true. And just so that you know, this is a Microsoft thing so it affects all OEM's not just Lenovo.
When you purchase a new computer with Windows installed on to it, you are buying a full copy of the software. What you are not buying is tech support from Microsoft. The OEM has to provide Windows Tech Support for you. Most people never really find out what this means because the computer runs fine, or when it stops running fine, they run out and purchase a new computer.
You have a copy of Windows licensed by Lenovo. So any media used to repair your computer has to come from Lenovo. The download program that Microsoft has now is only for versions of Windows purchased in a retail box, or from their online retailer DigitalRiver. Because your copy of Windows is Licensed by Lenovo to be installed on Lenovo computers, any tech support or repair downloads have to come thru Lenovo. You can download every version if Windows and it will not accept the key on the computer. For your key to work you need to get a copy of Windows from Lenovo.
I know this sucks but it is a licensing issue. As I said, it is the same way at Dell, IBM, Gateway, and any other company that builds systems for resale. Many small shops that buy builders licenses are also affected.
But there is a possible way out for you, bananaman mentioned it. Clone the drive. Or if you created recovery media, you can use it as well, but the drive you install it on will have to be the exact same size as the one that came with the computer.

Has the Windows Key been included in Ps6 keyboard mapping ? It would be helpful if I could assign keyboard short-cuts to the Windows Key ? I ask this question cause I'm using Ps 5.0.
Hi,
Snapping Windows with Win + Arrow keys worked on my test machines.

Lumia 2520 Windows key doesnt light up
HI,
just received my Lumia 2520 from At&t yesterday and having a "little" but annoying issue with this otherwise great device:
The Windows key on the bezel does not light up. It is "ok" when it is bright and etc. but when it is dark around me, it would be most helpful to see where the key is at.
Is there any way to turn it off and on?
Thank you for any help.
ps: my 920 buttons light up perfectly.
Solved!
Go to Solution. There isn't a light under that button so there is no way to make it light up. It doesn't light up on many other windows tablets either, guessing that's because of it being the only front button and being in an easy to remember location.
