Windows CS3 Programs Freeze When Opening Files

Windows CS3, all programs freeze when trying to open files by going through the file menu.
Able to open files when navigating with windows explorer then right clicking on file and choosing "open with"
Windows XP Professional SP3, 4 Gb Ram Quad Core Processor.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled CS3 (Design Premium)
Have deleted photoshop settings file and tried using photoshop.
Any time I try to open a new file or existing file by going through the file menu the program freezes and must be terminated using the task manager.

I wish you had posted that last night. LOL I'm glad it worked for you and I will tell anyone who has this problem to try that before they try my fix. I was starting to have other problems like inDesign corrupting images.
Here's how I fixed it,
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS UNLESS YOU ARE WILLING TO RISK HAVING TO REFORMAT YOUR PC.
1. Backup entire pc
2. Deactivate Creative Suite 3 (or whatever application you are having a problem with)
3. Uninstall problem application or suite, then uninstall everything by adobe.
4. Search PC for all folders and files with "adobe", no quotes, in the name.
5. Delete all folders and files with "adobe", no quotes, in the name.
6. Restart PC
7. Run ccleaner and also run the registry fix.
8. Restart PC.
9. Backup registry.
10. Scan registry for "adobe", no quotes. Delete every instance of "adobe", no quotes making sure the reference is truly "adobe" and not something else.
11. Restart PC.
12. Install adobe suite or application.
13. Install any other adobe application you may need.
Worked for me, but

Fix found: Illustrator CS3 (PC) crashes when opening file or starting new file

Issue:
-Running Windows XP, tried installing CS3 Web premium on a new machine.
-All programs worked well except Illustrator; when opening a file or creating a new one, illustrator would crash and give a message of "Microsoft has experienced an error" blah blah "Send error report?"
-when trying to "open with.." by right clicking on a file, it would crash as well but give the message "The file xxxxxx.pdf is not a valid Win 32 application." Blah blah. Same thing with .ai files, etc.
Attempts to fix:
-re-installed CS3
-updated Illustrator to 13.0.1
-switched users
-cleaned up fonts
Fix that worked:
-uninstalled pre-loaded version of Acrobat that came with PC. I had a suspicion that the newer version of Acrobat on the new PC (9.5 or similar) might conflict with Illustrator, as the version of Acrobat to come with CS3 was 8 (I believe). This seemed to fix the problem.

Reproducable program locks when opening files using finders "Today" filter

Hi,
I am experiencing lockups (have to force quit the programs - which works) in different software products when I try to open files using the "Today" smartfilter from finder / the open dialogue. This wil happen when I attach files to websites using a file-input in Safari as well as with Photoshop just to name an example. It happens every time. Don't know why - and sure, I can avoid using a workflow like this - but I think this is not normal.
Anyone else experiencing these problems? Seems to be related to snow leopard since I do not remember having had these issues in the past.
The filetype does not seem to matter. It happened with PDF's, Jpg's, PSD's, etc.

RollingRocker, did you ever get a solution for this? I am having the same problem. I produce a pdf using a JSF third party api called flying saucer, which actually uses itext to produce the pdf. I can attempt to produce the same exact pdf over and over and about 85% of the time the error occurs and the rest of the time the pdf opens successfully with no error. Obviously 15% of the time the reader is completely happy with this pdf, so it is not a malicious document in any way.

CS5 programs freeze when opening documents (OSX Mavericks)

Hi all,
Just curious if anyone else is having this issue. After installing Mavericks, now any document I attempt to open in an adobe program freezes for a very long time before it opens. It could even be a tiny 72 dpi image that I try to open in Photoshop. It is also having some plugin issues when trying to open documents on a network. Is anyone else having this issue?

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately by the time I saw this I had already reformatted the computers having the issue and reinstalled an earlier OS. I will definitely try this out if it happens again though!

Reader 9 freezes when opening file

I've saved a Word 2007 file as pdf using the Word, Save As... option. The file opens in Adobe Reader 9, then freezes. I have to End Task on the program. However, if I open Reader, then File/Open the file it is OK and I can scroll through the document. I found if I opened Reader, Help menu and did a Repair Adobe Reader Installation that it solved the problem. I had the same freezing problem if I created the pdf file using Adobe Acrobat 8, then opened it with Reader 9.
Same problem occurs at work which makes me think it must be a bug. I can't find a patch for this particular issue and I note when I did a web search that there are other users who have the same problem.
PC 1 (work): Windows XP Pro, Office 2007 both with latest service packs etc. 4gb RAM
PC 2 (home): Windows Vista Business, Office 2007 both with latest service packs. 2gb RAM
Work laptop: Windows XP Pro, Office 2007 with latest service packs. 2gb RAM

LabView Freezing when opening files

After upgrading to Labview 8.2. It will open but when I go to file and open, or simply press open on the LV screen the program instantly freezes, can anybody help?

I suggest you try a full repair of LabVIEW, i have seen something like this before and that seemed to do the trick. If you go to Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel and select National Instruments Software, select LabVIEW 8.20 and click repair. It may take anything upto 20mins but give it a try.

Photoshop freezes when opening files?

Everytime I try to open a file, Photoshop freezes. I tried updating with Adobe Cloud but that freezes too. Its really frustrating because I have a deadline for Monday and I have not been able to use Any program for a month now. I have no time to keep trying things. Ive tried everything everyone posted here and none of it works. I blocked my payment for May 1st too because im not gonna pay for something that doesnt work. Any suggestions anyone?

This is why I suggest everyone keep one of the older Photoshop also loaded on the computer.

Programs freeze when "Open" or "Save As" dialogue is invoked

I've had this computer for a while now. Came from the factory with Win 8.0 64-bit107 GB free on the drive, , survived the update to 8.1 with no problems whatsoever, and until today it's been smooth sailing.
But now, any time I try to invoke an "Open" or "Save-as" dialogue, the dialogue does not appear, and the program in question stops responding. Seems to happen with all programs (specifically, Notepad, Mozilla, Paint.NET have been tried).
I've restarted the computer, no improvement. I can open and work with File Explorer with no problems--copy, move, and delete works fine--it just seems to be that one dialogue box.
I waited on one specific program (Paint.NET), and after about 8 minutes it finally opened the dialogue box. Once the dialogue opened, it behaved perfectly normally. Unfortunately, Notepad is still not responding.
I'm up to date on all updates and patches, and the Action Center has no useful clues after reporting the issue.
I'm on an HP 2000 Notebook PC, 4 GB RAM, 107 GB free on 275 GB hard drive, anti-virus (I use AVG-Free) is up to date and finding no issues.
Any clues?

Is this a problem in safe mode as well?

Tip: If you have a keyboard, use WIN+Iand
then skip to Step 3.

Photoshop CS5 freezes when opening files

Since, I belive, the last CS5 update a week ago, Photoshop is freezing for a few seconds (5 or 6) everytime it opens an image, any image, regardless of its size, color mode, layers, etc. This was not happening before. Anyone with same problem?
I have a Mac Pro 2x2.66MHz with 11GB Ram and Mac OS X 10.6.4.

Yes, here at work we use Font Agent Pro. I tried your 'unspoken' suggestion and the problem indeed goes away when removing the Font Agent Pro auto-activating plugin.
Thanks for the solution. Should we avoid the Font Agent Pro plugins in InDesign and Illustrator too? Is there a better way for auto-activating fonts (Suitcase Fusion)?

Photoshop CS3 loading times when opening file or creating new

Hi all,
Every time I open any kind of file or when I create a new file it takes Photoshop at least 30 secs to open or create the file. I also have PS installed on another computer (with the same specs) where I don't have this problem.
Does anyone have any idea why it takes PS so long to open/create files? I'm using a laptop with a Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of DDR2 ram.

Error in Cs3 extended when opening files.

when I open a file i get the error
ADOBE Photoshop CS3 Extended:Photoshop.exe - teopassingsfout ( dutch for application error)
The pc is member of a domain. I installed the legal software on users account with administrative privileges.
Start the program without error untill opening a file.
Does anyone has a solution for that please?

CS6 DW hanging when opening files - Windows 8.1 running MS Defender

When opening files in CS6 DW it sometimes hangs for up to 4 minutes before opening the files.
Also, CS6 DW and Fireworks crash frequently on my PC.
I'm running Windows 8.1, MS Defender and my PC is a Pentium i7 with 8GB of RAM
Any ideas what I can do to stop these things happening? It's really starting to impact on the productivity of my day.

You seem to be implying that when you switch off MS Defender, it works?
If not, we'll need a little more info.
Does the hang happen with all files in all sites, or just certain files?
If it happens with just certain files, could you please share the code to one of those files? A link to an online page would be best, but pasting the code into the forum can also help, just don't use email to send the code to the forum, that won't work.
Have you tried any of the standard troubleshooting steps as of yet (Deleting Program Cache, Restoring Preferences, Cleaner Tool Reinstall)?

Hi Susan,
The Adobe plugin in Internet Explorer is a bit different from the one in Firefox, however they're all made by Adobe and they usually come with Adobe Reader.
When you open a PDF file in Firefox, it "calls" Adobe Reader to help it read the file. In this case, the Adobe Reader takes over, and it is responsible for freezing your browser.
I suggest you try the last 4 solutions presented on the [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]] (start with "Re-install the plugin" through "Re-install Adobe Reader").
