Windows Installer error when upgrading to Itunes 8.01

I receive the following error when trying to install Itunes 8.01 on my Windows XP Service Pack 3 system:
"There is a problem with the Windows Installer Package - A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor"
The upgrade fails and reverts back to the previous version of Itunes.
I tried re-installing windows installer and it is current. All other programs install without issues but Itunes does not install.

I tried the repair option on Itunes - ran it successfully, turned off Norton AV auto protect temporarily then immediately tried running the setup again on Version 8.01 and get the same error.
I have not yet uninstalled version 7 of Itunes on my system followed by running the Windows Installer Cleanup utility to completely remove Itunes from the system.
This issue to date has not been resolved yet but need to try the cleanup option.

Hi!! I finally found a solution
I´m Sure this one will work for everyone
-First you have to uninstall all Apple Software using Control Panel
-Download Unlocker Software from softsonic heres the link http://tinyurl.com/3e8gj2h
    or google it
    -Install Unlocker
-Go to Start and type this in search: %programdata%
-ProgramData window will open, so find apple folders
-Right click in each apple folder and find Unlocker in the options
-Choose Delete each apple folders (with unlocker program)
-Go to My PC, C Local Disk and find Program Files
-Look for Apple folders and Delete them (with Unlocker)
-Find a Folder (in Program Files) called Common Files
-Delete all Apple Folders (in common files) with Unlocker
    - Empty your trash can (thats what i did)
    -Reboot
    -Install Itunes
Note: You can Reboot or use Safe Mode to use Unlocker if it doesnt work.
    ....and that's All

    Hi,
Please answer my questions as well as JClarks, OK?
I cannot see that there is a error code associated with it.
this is the base error KB that references the .msi files.

  • Vista 64 bit OS - Installer error when updating to iTunes 10.5

I've tried updating iTunes via "Download Only", but when I try to run the installer (tried by clicking on Setup Admin and even the Mobile App Manager) ... the installer get's to where it appears it is about to successfully complete and then rollsback all changes and states an error is keeping it from installing and that no changes were applied.  Can anyone help me troubleshoot what is causing this?

Here's what I did...found it on another thread about this topic.  Go to Start, All Programs, Apple Software Update.  Let it update itself first.  Then ONLY update to Quicktime 7.7.  Then rerun the iTunes installation program.  That worked for me, and I was getting the exact same message as above.  I don't know if it was the Apple Software Update program or the update to Quicktime, but something fixed whatever was wrong.

  • My iTunes wont update, and I can't connect my new iPhone if it doesn't update. It says error when I try to update, and I cant download it because of a "Windows Installer" error...

I just not a new iPhone and in order to sync it I need the newest iTunes, but I can't update it! I tried checking for updates and then trying to downlaod it. I get this error: "Errors occured while installing the updates. If the problem persists, chose Tools > Download Only and try installing manually."
Where on earth is Tools anyway?
When I tried just reinstalling all of iTunes, I had a Windows Installer error...I don't even know what that is!

tools is at the top of the apple updater but dont get your hopes up

    Hello ehoff5,
I would be concerned too if I was not able to play my music in iTunes.  It sounds like the music files may be in a location that iTunes is not expecting.  I recommend reviewing the following articles to locate you music files on your computer:

    many thanks.
"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package.  A program required for this install to complete could not be run.  Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

  • I am unable to install iTunes due to Windows Installer error message on Vista

I needed to update my iTunes since I purchased the iPad2.  My Windows Vista machine will not allow me to update the program due to a "Windows Installer" error message.  I first attempted to update, then I uninstalled and am unable to reinstall the software."There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run..."

I finally got the program to install/run.  I downloaded a third copy and saved it again on the desktop.  I selected "Run as Administrator" instead of "Run"  It must have been the 10th plus time I tried to install, but this time it completed.  I don't know if the "Run as Administrator" was the key since it is Vista, or if I just got lucky. Either way I am relieved.

  • I cannot install the latest version of iTunes on laptop (windows xp). I receive a windows installer error message. Not having any issues installing any other software.  Was having no issue syncing w iPhone. Made the mistake of uninstalling prior version.

I cannot install the latest version of iTunes on my laptop (windows xp). I receive a windows installer error. Am not having any problem installing other software or syncing w iPhone.  Made the mistake today of uninstalling my older version and not cannot install new.  Need new version in order to sync w new iPad.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Apparently, security programs like Macafee and Norton view Itunes updates as new programs and block then from access. If you add Itunes to the list of exemptions, it solves the problem.

I am not sure about this particular error number. Looking it up in Windows Installer error messages, it says file in use, restart may be required. But I am not certain that it is a Windows installer error message.
It certainly is worth trying a restart.
I would also clear your temporary Internet files and re-download iTunes.
Also clear your temporary directory as that seems to be where the error occurred.
This article on trouble installing iTunes includes instructions for clearing the temp folder (towards the end of the page) and also other things to try.
