Windows Media Player 12 Issues in Windows 8.1

Hi,
I am running Windows Media Player 12 in Windows 8.1, and it will not play anything. I thought it was just an issue with avi video at first, but it is across the board (video and audio). I have followed all the steps given here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/c00d11b1
Thanks!

Hi,
To help you suggest more steps to resolve the issue, I would appreciate if you could answer the following questions:
1.Did you make any changes on the computer before the issue happen?
2.Did you get any error messages?
3.Do you face the same issue while using other player?
I suggest you reinstall Windows Media Player to check the result.
1.Press Win + R, type "appwiz.cpl",press enter.
2.Click "Turn Windows features on or off", uncheck "Media Features" ,and click OK.
3.Then check "Media Feature" again to test it.
Meanwhile, please check your audio driver in Device Manager.

  • Windows Media Player Issues

I'm creating a DVD with only one video track and one button on one menu. I am using the "Satin Red Cover" template. I am using DSP 4.0.2
When I put the disc into a Windows machine, and play the disc using Windows Media Player, the one button doesn't show up (even when you mouse over where it should be).
Here's the weirdest part - it only happens on some machines. I've tried it out on about 5 PC's and 3 of them worked and two didn't. Some even have the exact same version of WMP.
    Help! Please!

I don't know if this will help, but I have seen when DVD + R media is used, that some of those issues with PC tend to go away.
How ever, DVD - R media has the most compadibility between desktop DVD players.

  • Windows Media player issues on a Pavillion dv6

My windows media player is acting odd. I was ripping a CD and the media player rips all the tracks but the first one. Then it says my media player is no longer responding. When I shut down the computer for the first time as it powered back up It displayed a message about a malfunctioning fan. The message hasn't been displayed again after rebooting and trying to recreate this issue. I just purchased this computer in February from Wal-Mart and my warranty is still valid until next February.

    Hi,
Assuming you are running a version of Windows 7, it may be worth trying to reset Windows Media Player as follows.
Click the Start Menu and select Control Panel.  Open Programs and Features, Click 'Turn Windows features on or off', open up Media Features and untick Windows Media Player.  Click Yes then OK and then restart the notebook.
When Windows has restarted, click the Start Menu and select Control Panel.  Open Programs and Features, Click 'Turn Windows features on or off', open up Media Features and tick Windows Media Player.  Click Yes then OK and when WMP has finished installing, restart the notebook again.

  • Windows media player issues with Live 24

well i've had this card for about 6 months now. took like 3 weeks of fiddling to get it to work the way i want. but i never could get windows media player to work right. if i do get it to work it half works and everything else doesnt...
When i try to play a music file (mp3 or WMA) it says:
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly."
and yet when i play it on Media Scource (which is very laggy and i am un-impressed!) it works just fine! I have no idea what to do! i've searched on here for what seems like days and have tried everyhtign i found. i've updated drivers, fully uninstalled and reinstalled, made sure several times now that my old on-board (cmeadia 97)sound is disabled. i am at a loss of what to do next!
    any help is apreciated!

If you try Creative WDM driver (MME or DS) w/ other software, does those work?
If not, then you need to re-install Creative bundled drivers.
You can test both w/ NI BeatPort Player as for an example (or w/ Winamp, etc. (w/ Winamp, you can also use Kernel Streaming or ASIO output plugin which both gives maybe a bit better output quality)).
How 'bout those windows audio settings (start run.. mmsys.cpl)?
    KS for Winamp - http://www.stevemonks.com/ksplugin/
    ASIO for Winamp - http://otachan.com/
    Asio4all - http://www.asio4all.com (needed w/ ASIO)

Windows Media Player won't play DVDs anymore like it used to.
In Windows 8, WMP does not have the ability to play DVD movies.

  • A small bug in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 8.1 and Windows 7

First of all, do excuse me as I have absolutely no idea where to go to report bugs in either Windows Media Player, or the Microsoft's Media Foundation filters that most probably handle the actual parsing and decoding. I see that some related bug reports
have gotten noticed here on the Technet forums, and thus ended up writing here.
Some time ago I helped a fellow internet user to update his encoding pipe line from quite an older version of ffmpeg and libx264 to a newer one. After some testing, I noticed him being unhappy with the result because of "black borders" around the
video clip, but only in WMP12, not in other players. Being interested in what this was, I went on and started checking out the behavior.
What I found out is that, with the newer ffmpeg and libx264, WMP12 was only seeing the video resolution (which was 1440x1080) at first, and resized/matched the player window according to that. Only after that did it then, within this window, actually show
the video and apply the correct aspect ratio to it (4:3 sample/pixel aspect ratio, or 16:9 display aspect ratio). In other words, the video would play correctly, but within a 4:3 display aspect ratio video surface, leading to black bars on the top and the
    bottom.
Now, if you manually resize the window, the black borders would of course go away. This is because they were not part of the video, but just something the player had based its window size calculations on originally. With the older ffmpeg + libx264 mix
things would Just Work, and the auto-sizing worked.
So I went off to look up all the data in the files that could relate to aspect ratio :) .
[tkhd: Track Header Box] in the container has the width and height set to 1920x1080 in both files, so this is most probably ignored
[pasp: Pixel Aspect Ratio Box] in the container is only present in the new one, and thus most probably ignored. hSpacing and vSpacing are set to 4 and 3, thus becoming 4:3 (this is the
pixel or sample aspect ratio, so this is correct for 1440x1080 to be shown as 16:9). This information, if available, should trump the aspect ratio information in the stream (a quote from ISO/IEC 14496-12: "These
(pasp and clap boxes) are both optional; if present, they over-ride the declarations (if any) in
structures specific to the video codec, which structures should be examined if these boxes are absent.") .
In the actual AVC/H.264 stream both files have aspect_ratio_idc set. The older file has the value set to 255 (Extended_SAR structure follows), and Extended_SAR then contains sar_width set to 4 and sar_height set to 3. On the newer file, on the other hand,
we have a value of 14. Looking at the H.264 specification, value 14 is defined as "4:3 , 1440x1080 16:9 frame without horizontal overscan"
So... Since the pasp box seems to be completely irrelevant and ignored, and since the tkhd box contains exactly the same information in both cases and thus seems to be ignored, the only thing that comes to mind is that:
Only the information from the AVC/H.264 video stream is actually taken into mention at this stage.
The AVC/H.264 video stream parser does not know the aspect_ratio_idc value 14.
I haven't actually tried to change the values in the parameter set's VUI parameters around to be sure of this being the reason, but, unless WMP misunderstands what the pasp box's value means (4:3 read as the aspect ratio for the whole picture, instead of
one sample/pixel), that's the only reason I can see this happening because of.
A small sample mp4 file for this issue is provided at fushizen.eu/samples/wmp12_mp4/merry_christmas.mp4 . Having the automatic zoom set to 50% does help replicating it with smaller displays :) . WMP will resize its video window to a 4:3 display aspect ratio,
and then show the 16:9 display aspect ratio content within that. This happens with both Windows 8.1 as well as Windows 7, on Windows Media Player 12.
Now, if the issue is actually on ffmpeg's or libx264's side, feel free to note the technical problems with the sample, and I will review and then report them if I see the related specifications agreeing on the issue. So far this seems to be purely a problem
with the related Media Foundation filters, and/or Windows Media Player 12.

I have a lot of grief with this version of Windows Media Player.
It is very buggy and frustrating to use.
I have my Music library on a QNAP NAS, which is as reliable as they come.
System notifications make it not save changes.  It also does not do a good job of interpreting albums and artists from folders.  Changes to track names are not saved, nor are tracks moved to other albums, renamed albums, changes to genre, artist
or date.  It separates and merges albums/tracks without sense or reason.  Some changes I've made up to 4 times, then closed WMP and re-started my machine to check if it has/hasn't saved the changes.  Often it has not.
This is the first time I've used WMP in this capacity, and I do not recommend it.
    New service pack please.

  • How do I uninstall Windows Media Player 11 (from Windows XP)

I tried to uninstall Windows Media Player 11 using the 2 methods in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/934372/en-us
The 1st method rolled back Windows Media Player 11 , but I want to uninstall it.
The 2nd method gave me the following pop-window:
    Run
C:\WINDOWS\$ntUninstallwmp11$\spuninst refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network,
and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.
I am surprised that Microsoft supplies a product that one cannot uninstall.
I would very much like to uninstall Windows Media Player 11 -
If that is not possible, I could re-install it.
    Thanks for any helo.

  • Need Windows Media Player Plugin for Windows 8

When I go thru the directions to install the plugin it only shows up to Windows 7. I have Windows 8. The media player works fine thru Internet Explorer, but I'd rather use Firefox.
Problem - I have an important viewing of my daughter's 3d/4d ultrasound this Saturday and I don't want to mess up my laptop by installing the wrong version and not being able to view it at all.

Those instructions should work for Windows 8 as well.

  • How do I download Windows Media Player to my Windows 7 - 32 bit laptop?

As the title suggests, I am having a bit of difficulty going to the Microsoft Website and downloading Windows Media Player - version 11 to my Windows 7 Hewlett Packard laptop - the Pavilion dv4.    Any suggestions?  I do not see WMP in
my list of applications nor is it under the Control Panel in Add/Remove programs.   I cannot therefore run the Demos with Microsoft has on using MS-WORD 2007 which is the version that came installed with my laptop in 2011.
Please give me some step by step instructions for finding if I have WMP at all.  Second, please tell me how I can then download from Microsoft's site.  I really need to learn the ins and outs of Word and I'm used to the prior Word version.
    thanks.

  • Cross browser windows media player issues

i have thumbnail galleries that open 72 video clips. too many
clips to embed, too many to create new pages for.
the thumbs link directly to the files (.mpegs and .wmvs).
firefox is great with the mpegs if the user has the right
plug ins, although it opens up .wmvs in a new window which is
frustrating, but there's only about 12 .wmvs out of the 72 videos.
here's my main problem. internet explorer opens all files
nicely in standalone player (no new pages, nice and clean) but
certain files do not download properly and the media player will
only play the first 10 seconds or so. where with firefox it will
completely dl the video before playing in media player. i can fix
this problem in IE ONLY if i call up the video in a blank page BUT
when i do that, firefox opens up an entire new blank page with
every video (wmv and mpeg alike) so the user is bombarded with
blank pages and has to continually hit the back button when using
    firefox.
it's like i can't find a happy medium.... what do you guys
    recommend?
the design is totally done at this point but i'm willing to
put in more work to find a solution that works.

  • Streaming Windows Media Player Issues

So I've searched all of support and to the best of my knowlege i can't find anything.
I did find one thread that said to download Flip4Mac but that will not work for me.
I am currently in my T-Mobile account trying to listen to some playback music on the site.
So each time I want to listen to the 30 second media an error comes up saying:
"This page "T-Mobile - My T-Mobile" has content of MIME type "application/x-mplayer2", but you don't have a plug-in installed for this MIME type. A plug-in should be available on this page:
    http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/MediaPlayer"
Now I've gone there and tried to look for several different things.
Each time I open quicktime I set the settings to work for MIME and streaming yet I still get this error.
I just got my mac and I've been a pc user for 6 years so I'm still a noob when it comes to mac things.
    Any suggestions or ideas?
    Thanks!

Tyler, you might have more luck if you ask in the QuickTime for Mac forum. What works (or doesn't) for QuickTime for Windows will usually be very different.
    Good luck.

  • Windows Media Player won't recognize Adobe Flash

Every time I try to play certain files (SWF files, that used to play in Windows Media Player) this little window pops up informing me that; "To play the selected item, you must install the Adobe Flash Player. To download the Adobe Flash Player, go to the Adobe Web site."
Problem is, I've downloaded Adobe Flash Player..... I even decided to cover all my bases, and got Shockwave as well but every time I try to play, it pops up the same message, and clicking the "Web Help" button takes me to the exact same page where I downloaded Adobe Flash Player from!
Gonna restart my system, see if that helps it (really feeling like it won't >,>), but if that doesn't work then I'm officially stumped!

Are you loading a particular website? Where is this file that uses Windows Media Player?
Since your issue relates to Flash, which is separate from Shockwave, post teh question, with full details of what you have been doing, to the Flash forum at:
