Windows Media Player suddenly not working- using wrong bit..?

This is the error msg I get when trying to start windows media player:
"The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."
I have not changed anything, it looks like my computer tried to do a quicktime update however when I when to most recent updates I did not see that wmp had been updated.. I use 64 bit on my computer, but i believe I was told that I can switch between 32
and 64 bit. How do I fix this problem as I cannot use wmp for anything right now? Thanks.

Hi,
Firstly, if the issue did not occur before, please try to use the system restore to return to the point which the problem did not appear.
You may run Windows Media Player settings troubleshooter and then test.
Open the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Media-Player-Settings-troubleshooter
If the issue persists, reinstall Windows Media Center via Turn Windows features on or off
a. Open Control Panel/Programs and Features.
b. Click "Turn Windows features on or off" in the left pane.
c. Expand "Media Features", uncheck "Windows Media Player". Click "Yes" to continue, and click OK to quit. Then Restart.
Sometimes, this error message appears because a installation file is corrupted. You can re-download or re-copy the setup file (Wmplayer.exe) for a test.
If the issue persists, I would like to suggest you use Event Viewer to check the related logs.
What information appears in event logs (Event Viewer)?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/What-information-appears-in-event-logs-Event-Viewer
Hope it helps.

  • Windows media player will not work as no DVD driver

Had to format disk (trojan) & reinstall Windows XP home. Now Windows media player will not work as no DVD Driver, can I download from Toshiba site?

    Hi
Usually the Windows media Player is not able to play DVD movies IF no plug-ins were installed.
To watch DVD movies you can use the programs like WinDVD or PowerDVD.
Such programs were designed especially for the DVD playing!
But you can also visit the Microsoft website and search for plug-ins for Windows Media player.
Then you could download and install it to play DVD with WMP

  • Plugin for Windows Media Player is not working with Firefox 4 on Windows 7

I updated my Firefox to the latest version 4 yesterday, but since this time seems plugin for Windows Media Player not working anymore. When I visit some website with embedded video - like [http://www.ta3.com/sk/live this] - the window with WMP is not displayed and no video is playing. The website reports: You don´t have any plugin for playing of this video.
I reinstalled the plugin for WMP several times - with no success. This problem is on all webpages with embedded video for WMP. The installation of WMP plugin is successfully finished, but no video is playing. I checked the “plugins“ folder in the installation directory of Firefox and everything seems to be OK. Where is also the problem? Please, help me with solving of this problem...

  • Re: Satellite L650D - 15K - Windows Media Player is not working

    Hi,
I purchased a new laptop just before Christmas - windows media player is not responding and i don't know how to fix this issue. Any help would be appreciated?

    Hey,
I agree with Horwath. You should try to reinstall Windows Media Player from Microsoft website.
Usually if a program doesnt respond or make any other problems, reinstalling is always a good idea.
Alternative you can also try VLC media player. Thats also freeware player and can play all video and audio files. I use it for years now and its really nice software. :)

    Hi,
it would be useful to know which system you have (vista or xp) and if you recently installed some software or windows updates.

  • Embeded Windows Media Player: visualisations not working in Firefox

In IE my web page will play an mp3 with visualisations.
In Firefox there are no visualisations, just a black screen. Can anyone tell me how to get the visualisations working in FF?

    Hello Martin.
Although possibly not related to your problem, I will remind you that the version of Firefox you are using at the moment has been discontinued and is no longer supported. Furthermore, it has known bugs and security problems. I urge you to update to the latest version of Firefox, for maximum stability, performance, security and usability. You can get it for free, as always, at [http://www.getfirefox.com getfirefox.com].
You may need to install an appropriate plugin. Firefox should detect which plugin it needs and ask you if you want to install it. If it doesn't, please provide us the link of the page where this happens so we can tell you which plugin it is.
If you are having problems using an already installed plugin (see plugins at Tools > Add-ons > Plugins), you need to contact its author for support.

  • I definitely have put this under the wrong catergory but i don't care, I was wondering why everytime i click on a video to play it says: Windows media player has stopped working

Ok, so I made a video with Bandicam, and every time I click on it to play it (it is saved as an MP4), it just says: Windows Media Player has stopped working. Then it gives me two choices: Close the program OR look online for a solution. I REALLY want to
post these videos, but I can't. If anyone could help that would be great!

    Hi juderocks14,
Please first take a check with the other Players and see if they could play the MP4 file normally. If it can't be played, which means it might be corrupted. You may ask at the Bandicam side, or save the files again.
If issue insists, take a try with the Troubleshooter (For Windows 7, 8 and 8.1):
Open the Windows Media Player Settings troubleshooter
Fix Windows Media Player video, and other media or library issues
Or you may try to turn Windows Features on or off to reset Windows  Media Player:
Turn Windows features on or off (Before turn it on again, please remember to reboot first)

What happens if I turn off Windows Media Player?

  • Windows Media Player does not play Streaming me

After installing All the Software for Audigy 2ZS Platinum. My Windows Media Player will not play any video streams from MSN or Yahoo. Is there any known conflict with any of the software or how can I make the software compatible with WMP v0 windows XP.

    Hi,
Try the following to force Windows Media Player to re-build the Library Database.
A useful utility for viewing all the files on your PC is called Free Commander, on the link below, as it displays folders that the Operating System normally hides and has a good search function.
    http://www.snapfiles.com/php/download.php?id=107872&a=7122339&tag=601108&loc=10
This is a zipped file.  If you don't have an extraction utility installed, download and install 7-Zip which can be used to open this so that you can run the installer.
Make sure Windows Media Player and Windows Media Centre are closed.
Launch Free Commander, double click Users, double click 'your user name', double click Local Settings, double click Application Data, double click Microsoft and double click Media Player.  Delete all the files that have the extension .wmdb - do not delete any folders.
Close Free Commander and open Windows Media Player - it will now begin to re-build the library database which may take a while, but when it has finished see if the movie files play Ok now.

macfriedchikkin's reply would make sense to you if you were trying to open a camera, but if you are trying to view streming media from a web site that is a different story. It helps to be very specific about what you are tyring to do on these forums.
I belive you would go into Firefox Preferences menu and tell it  to use VLC as the application to play WMV files. I'm still running Tiger,  however, so I can't tell you if it the latest version works wel that way. The Tiger version doesn't seem to, but a lot may have changed since then. (I'm only just getting around to installing Leopard next week now that there are too may apps I can't run on Tiger. ) Perhaps someone else on this forum can better help you set  up the player in your browser.
Or you can cut out the middleman and give VLC the direct video URL:
Choose Open File from the File menu and paste in the URL of the video, say,
    http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-1
    or http://azul.streamguys.com/auduboncal-2
Your media should play this way. Dont forget to save the playlist for later.
I'l keep investigating on my end, and yes, I'm also  encouraging certain people who are streaming windows media in to switching to a different format

  • Windows Media Player does not recognize new downloaded songs

I have a Pavilion a4310f Prod Nr:  AY014AA-ABA running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
I just discovered that Windows Media Player does not recognize songs I recently downloaded from the Wal-Mart Music Download Site.  The songs can be seen in the Music Library in a folder named "Downloads" and I can open each song and it will play when double clicked.  The problem is that I can not create a playlist containing the new songs and burn a copy of the playlist because the songs are not listed in the Media Player library no matter hot it is sorted (Artist, Album, Genre, etc).
Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You might also want to consider moving the songs to my Music or the folder you have WMP set as your Music folder. You can find/change that folder in WMP by going to File ---> Manage Libraries
Launch WMP ----> Tools ----> Options --->Privacy and be sure that the Display information from the internet box is checked.

  • A video clip that works fine in windows media player but not in Premiere

I have an AVI video clip file that I recorded from an old VHS tape many years back. The file plays just fine in Windows Media Player but when I import it into the latest version of Premiere Pro CS6 the video portion shows nothing but a green screen. The audio track plays fine. I've tried using Adobe Media Encoder to change it into a variety of different formats. Some don't even produce a file and some do but don't work any differently than the original within Premiere. Any suggestions?
    thanx a bunch,

  • Windows Media Player will not play embedded in Firefox

I'm puzzled over the sudden inability to play embedded Windows Media Player files in Firefox. Everything was working fine, then suddenly yesterday with no changes made by me and no updates or other changes to the system I am aware of, suddenly it will not play.
I can right click a link and save it, and it will play in the regular Media Player. However, when the content is embedded in a website, it loads the page and just sits there. Won't play.
    I'm using:
    Windows Vista Home Premium
    Windows Media Player v. 11.0.6002.18311
    Firefox 3.5.5
    I went to this page:
    http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206213
And when I type in about:plugins, I cannot see the DRM files. Am I supposed to? I tried using the Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox (wmpfirefoxplugin) to repair it, but that hasn't helped.
Any advice? Please keep in mind that I am practically retarded when it comes to tech stuff, and working several jobs and in school full time, so I really don't have the ability to spend hours and hours researching this. I need a concise, quick fix. Thanks!

Why are you using such an old Firefox/3.5.3 version from 2009 (Gecko/20090824) as shown in the user agent and haven't updated Firefox for such a long time?
    See:
The Firefox 3.5.3 version that you currently run is no longer supported with security updates.
You should at least use the latest Firefox 3.6.x version if you do not want to switch to Firefox 4+ versions.
Your plugins list in the system details list shows the WMP plugin (np-mswmp), so that plugin should be working.
    Do WMP test pages work?
