Windows Phone sync and transfer options

This post explains the options available for synchronizing and transferring contacts, calendar and tasks from your Windows PC to a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone.
How Contacts, Calendar and Tasks are synchronized between a Windows PC and a Lumia family phone depends on which software is used on the PC
If a S40, S60 or Symbian Nokia phone was used before contacts, calendar and tasks can be synchronized between this phone and your PC using Nokia Suite with the following:
Microsoft Windows 7 contacts
Microsoft Windows Vista calendar and contacts
Microsoft Outlook 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010
Microsoft Outlook Express
Mozilla Thunderbird
Nokia Suite (v3.6.x and later) allows for an easy transfer of contacts, calendar and photos to your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone via SkyDrive.
Here's how this feature works;
Connect your Nokia S40, S60 or Nokia Belle phone to your PC using the USB cable.
After Nokia Suite is started and your phone shows as connected select Tools>Upload to SkyDrive and follow the on screen instructions. If you do not have one yet you will have to create a Microsoft account which has a SkyDrive attached to it. You can create such account here.
You will now have to reset your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone. Doing so will erase all content from the phone and return it to it's 'out of the box' state. Make sure you have synced any media files to your PC (Zune for WP7.x devices / copy them through explorer on WP8.x devices) or Mac(Connector). You can sync these back after the reset. When finished reset your Nokia Lumia Windows Phone using Settings>about>reset your phone.
Go through the Device First Use sequence and when asked enter your Microsoft Account used to save the content from Nokia Suite. When the setup has finished your will find your contacts, calendar and photos have all transferred to your Lumia. These will also be available through your Microsoft account through the web interface. The list of installed (paid) apps is also restored and the phone will start downloading these once the restore is complete. You can switch to WiFi for this if you have access.
It is important to note this transfer will only work to the Nokia Lumia at the Device First Use sequence (after a reset). If you have your Lumia setup it will not look for or sync the information copied to SkyDrive through Nokia Suite.
SMS message can not be transferred directly, but you can export all messages in Nokia Suite (Messaging>File/Export all text messages) and open the resulting Comma Separated File (.csv) in Excel or OpenOffice Calc to create an Excel sheet (.xls file) this can then be copied to your SkyDrive and opened from the Office app. You could also use a tool to create separate files from the exported .CSV file and copy all of these to SkyDrive.
If a Microsoft Exchange server is used an Outlook account is created on the Lumia. This is done through 'Settings > email + accounts >add an account > Outlook'. The following settings are required. Usually these can be obtained from the system administrator for the Exchange server:
Mail address
User name (usually the same as the login name for the business PC)
Password (usually the same as the password for the business PC)
The Microsoft Exchange server Domain
The address for the Microsoft Exchange server
If Microsoft Outlook is used for private mail account(s) the Outlook Hotmail Connector needs to be installed to synchronize with the primary Microsoft Account and with the Lumia.
The mail account needs to be set up as a separate mail account through:
'Settings > email + accounts >add an account > other account'
More information on setting up a mail account can be found here.
A useful tool for setting up the Outlook Hotmail Connector can be found here.
Additional Microsoft support pages for contacts and calendar.
If Windows Mail, a part of Windows Essentials, is used contacts, calendar and tasks are synchronized directly with the Lumia as long as you log in to Windows Mail using the same primary Microsoft Account as the one which is used on the Lumia. Contacts and/or calendar can be imported in to Windows Mail as follows:
Microsoft Windows 7 contacts, Microsoft Windows Vista contacts (and calendar)
Open Windows live mail
Go to contacts
Click on import
Import from current Windows user
Mozilla Thunderbird
Use the Hotmail extension for Thunderbird
Export contacts and import into Windows Mail
I hope this is helpful

  • Managing Windows Phone's and Symantec Code Signing certificate

    Hi,
We need to renew the code signing certificate from Symantec. However, we only use it to manage the Windows Phone devices and don't publish apps. Do we still need to spend $300 on renewing this cert? Can't I manage them for free like our iOS and Android devices?

You REQUIRE the Symantec Code Signing Certificate to manage Windows Phones via Windows Intune. This is a requirement of the device rather than the management solution.
You CAN manage Windows Phones without this cert using only Exchange active sync management in Intune. However this management is very basic and has no advanced features (basically the features provided by Exchange rather than Intune).

  • HT1386 I just downloaded the latest and greatest Itunes software for my windows computer and my itouch. My wife did the same. now neither of the itouches will sync and transfer the apps or the music. what gives?

I just down loaded the latest and greatest itunes and Ipod touch software. went thru all the steps, my wife did the same for her itouch on her computer. Hers is frozen, can't complete the restore, mine won't sync all the apps and music to the ipod. Where do I go from here?

    For her iPod see:
iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
For you, do you get any error messages?
Is there anything different about the apps and music that do sync and those that do not?

  • Log and Transfer: Options besides Apple Pro Res 422 ?

Hi,  I am now using a camcorder that records files to a card. When I use Log and Transfer in FCP, the resulting files default to Apple Pro Res 422, which are absolutely huge.  Is there a way to set this up to transfer to a smaller file type, maybe of a quality similar to HDV?
    Thanks, BOb

There's a reason HDV files are small - they're highly compressed files.  Final Cut is a professional product - it's built for high quality video, which requires storage space.
In some instances can change Log and Transfer preferences to transcode to ProRes422 LT, which is a lighter weight version of ProRes422.  The files will be smaller, but they probably won't be as small as you're hoping they will be.
Open the Log and Transfer window.  On the upper region there will be a gear, pick that and pick preferences.  Find the camera type you're using and change the Target Format to ProRes422 LT if possible.  As you did not tell us what kind of camera this is it is impossible to tell which one you need to change.
All that said, storage is pretty cheap.  If you don't do a whole lot of editing a 320gb G-Drive Slim for $80 would be a great investment.  If that isn't an option and you really need small files I would suggest editing in iMovie.  I believe it converts everything to H.264, which is very small in comparison to ProRes.  Don't try editing H.264 in FCP.

  • Can I use CS4 windows at home and transfer my files to my schools Mac computer!

Next semester I am planning on taking Intro to Computer Arts and I am thinking of purchasing CS4 for my home computer so I can do assignments at home - I also love photography so I plan to use it for that as well.  The problem is I have a windows based computer, and my school computer is Mac.  Will I be able to create a file in windows and view it on a Mac computer?
    Thank you!
    Sue

    Sue,
I thought Mac computers saved their files in a different format
It was not a "different format," per se, but a bit-order within the format. As John points out, that was a long time ago.
Now, here are some thoughts on the transfer of the files:
One can use external HDD's to move the files around. Note that image files can be pretty large. On most current PC's the HDD format is NTSF, instead of the older FAT-32. Unless it has changed, the Mac OS will want to see the older FAT-32 format for the external. Most come with that format from the mfgr. With image files, this is usually not an issue, because they are less than the ~4GB file size limit of FAT-32. Video files can be a whole different issue.
Most Mac OS's will have no problems with PC-formatted externals. It is not always the same thing going the other direction. My PC's have always been able to "mount" Mac discs. In the old days, I used one of several utilities to accomplish this. Now, it is less of an issue, but if you need to "mount" a Mac-formatted external and cannot, you might want to get MacDrive. Do not recall the price, but it's pretty cheap and effective. One caveat, should you go with MacDrive: upon installation, it will load one of its modules into the StartUp section of your MSCONFIG. Normally, this will just load and be transparent. However, if you get a DVD, that has both Mac and PC versions of programs on it, all of a sudden, your PC will only see the Mac versions, and not see the PC versions. The trick here is to use the included MSCONFIG (from the Start>Run) to NOT load that MacDrive module at StartUp. MacDrive will still work fine, when you launch it, but now your PC will see both versions of programs/files on those dual-platform DVD's.
Again, you might not even need this, but it is an option.
Were I you, I'd pick up an external HDD, with probably a FireWire connection, leave it formatted in FAT-32, and use it transport my image files between home and school.
Maybe one of the Mac-users can confirm whether the FAT-32 is still necessary on current Mac OS's.
One last consideration will be the calibration of your PC's monitor to the settings of your lab's Mac displays. Since the school will not let you adjust the Mac that you're working on, you'll want to calibrate your PC to match the lab machines. Otherwise, you will be doing things like density/gamma correction and color correction on one machine, only to have it look horrible on the other.
Good luck, and have fun in Photoshop!

  • Windows Phone 8 and Windows InTune

I just signed up for a 30-day Windows InTune trial account and I'm in the process of setting up mobile device management for Windows Phone 8 devices.  After looking through the documentation, I just want to verify that
before I can even enroll any Windows Phone 8 devices for management in Windows InTune I need to...
    1. Purchase a $99/yr subscription to establish a Company (not an Individual) account on the Windows Phone Dev Center (to get a Symantec Publishing ID)
    2. Purchase a $299/yr subscription for a Symantec Enterprise Mobile Code Signing Certificate to obtain an enterprise mobile code-signing certificate using the Symantec Publishing ID from step #1
    3. Download, sign the Company Portal App with the XapSignTool tool using the Symantec enterprise mobile code-signing certificate, and upload the app back into Windows InTune
    Is this correct?
    Regards,
    JJ

An important update to this thread - as of November 2014, you can now enroll Windows Phone 8.1 devices for management in Windows Intune without having to purchase a Symantec certificate. For details, see
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/microsoftintune/archive/2014/11/18/improvements-to-the-windows-phone-8-1-enrollment-process-for-intune.aspx
As of 4/2/2015, hybrid configurations still require a Symantec cert to enroll a phone, but you can get the Company Portal app for WinPhone in the Store and you can send deep links and web links to hybrid phones via that portal. The ability to enroll WinPhone
8.1 in hybrid without a cert is in the works. Stay tuned to the Intune blog for the announcement when that comes. Or you can ping me by replying to this thread, and ask me if certless hybrid is available yet.

I bought 32 GB micro SDHC card (Sandisk) that causes issues such as:
    (1) tap Settings - then blank screen - then go back to Home
    (2) when shutting down WP8, it says "goodbye" forever and it does not go away. I have to detach the battery.
    (3) Occasional freezes - need to do step (2) to force reboot
    (4) Go to music > songs, causes OS to freeze
    (5) Go to music > albums, select one and cannot play - OS freeze
I have huge library of MP3 and WMA that I want to keep them in the SD. I did it in 2 ways:
    (A)
Attach the micro SD (with adapter) into Windows PC, copy music folders to SD with Windows Explorer.
    (B) Attach the micro SD into Lumia 810, connect it to Windows PC. Windows detects the hardware, then using Windows Explorer, copy he music folders to Lumia 810 > SD card > Music.
When I tried (A), 5 above issues came up. WP8 reported the SD card was corrupted. I run chkdsk to fix the SD card, but the 5 issues persisted after I inserted the SD. I formatted the SD card, and repeat
(A), but the 5 issues persisted.
I tried (B), then the copying process stopped in the middle. Windows Explorer reported error cannot copy file XXX. Then the 5 issues came up again.
I am running out of ideas. What's wrong? SD, Lumia, or WP8? What should I do to have huge music files on the phone? Sorry, I can't play from the cloud.

    Hello,
    You should ask in the
Windows Phone forums on the Microsoft Community forums.

  • How to start a loop back proxy in Windows Phone 8 and have all app and internet traffic routed via it

I want to develop a proxy in windows phone 8 that will handle all data traffic emanating from phone(i.e. browser and Apps). The following procedures were carried out
    a) Edited the Wifi settings http proxy and port to the loop back proxy running in the phone(i.e. 127.0.0.1) and the port in which we brought up the loop back proxy
    b) We browsed pages and no request landed on the loop back proxy in the phone
Loop back proxy in phone is built using StreamSocketListener
    Another observation is that:
If we edit Wifi settings http proxy and port to a http/https proxy running on server then when we browse pages from windows phone we are getting the requests to server. Why is this difference?
Is there a limitation to run http/https proxy on mobile phone as loop back proxy.
But there are apps in the market for windows phone that behaves as HTTP proxy like
    http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/smartproxy/75da629b-c0f3-4999-86a3-9559181d1299
Any help on the same would be appreciated

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply and we have used StreamSocketListener waiting on a port and ip is given as loopback. The same settings are done for Wifi access point but when we browse any page in IE the requests are not landing on to the loop back proxy.Any idea on
the same would be highly appreciated

  • Difference between backup, sync and transfer?

I've read the iPad book and a few Apple tech notes on this but am still not 100% clear on the differences. It seems we can sync, backup and transfer our iPad data to our computers.
Frankly, I don't understand why there isn't just one process that "backs up" your iPad to your computer so there is a mirror copy of data in case you need to restore your iPad, existing or new one if lost.
Can some one summarize the difference between the 3 and a strategy to have ALL your iPad info on your computer? I use MobileMe BTW so my contacts and calendar are always synced using Push.
    Thanks. Steven

A backup only backs up up certain items. Other items are synced from your library and other places. See the following for what is in a backup:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4079
The transfer only transfers/copies iTunes purchases to a computer. It is useful when you buy items directly from the itunes store from your iPad. It is also very useful when your computer crashed and you do not have a backup. Thus, you can transfer music (which you can't redownload for free unlike app where your can).
Unless you cancel it, a backup is made every time you sync. Doing a backup alone is useful if you computer crashed and you do not have a backup. That way you can, along with doing other things like transferring purchases, get your iPad back to syncing with a "new" computer.

  • Please remove "Solved" from the Windows Phone 7 and Bestbuy discussions.

These should only be marked solved if there is an official announcement by Verizon for a Windows Phone 7 release date.

HTC Trophy will be available online at www.verizonwireless.com on May 26, and in Verizon Wireless Communication Stores on June 2 for $149.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. Click here for more information.
    Thanks

  • Pass values between Windows phone app and wpf

    Hi,
i am creating a windows phone app where it is like a remote for desktop app which have timer start stop and break
where start should activate the desktop applicaition timer like that.
what are the possibility that i can control wpf(desktop) app with a windows phone app directly without any database sort of thing.
    thank you

For help with the WPF side of this you'll be better off posting in the WPF forum.
There isn't any remote control system built in, but you can use standard networking to implement your own. From the phone side take a look at the
Connecting to networks and web services documentation. In particular, the
    Adding support for networking and
Connecting with sockets sections are likely to get you on the right path.
