  • How do I get OS X 10.6 pon my OS X 10.5.8 Power Mac with only a dual processor

how do I get OS X 10.6 on my OS X 10.5.8 Power Mac G5 with only a dual 2 GHz PowerPc G5 processor. I do not see how or where to buy 10.6. Am wondering if it won't download to a powerpc 10.5.8...any ideas how I can do it?

Hi, we're out of luck, it cannot run on G5s.
10.5.8 is as high as any G4/G5 can go.
    10.6.x/Snow Leopard General requirements...
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • My heads in a spin - Older Dual 2.7 or Newer Dual 2 Power Mac

    So - story so far
I bought a iMac intel. Yep I got sold on all the hype of 2x faster, the look of it, etc, but wasn't happy with it, it had problems, I returned it, and got a refund. But now I still need a mac.
My needs for a Mac are to take up video editing as a hobby. I have Motion waiting and ready to go.
So now I have faced facts and realised I would be better off with a PowerMac than a Intel Imac for all sorts of reasons (Eg Rosetta, Lack Of Universal Sofware, Lack of expansion, etc)
But my head is in a spin - I have the opportunity to buy a Power Mac G5 2.7GHZ DP (refurb) or a PowerMac Power Mac G5 DC 2.0GHz (New).
My question is this. Am I better with a older Dual (eg no PCI Express, DDR Ram, etc) which has a meaty processor - or the newer Dual Core G5 Power Mac 2.0 (which does have PCI express, DDR2).
The G5 CD 2Ghz has a less than adequate video card (GF6600LE 128mb) which of course I would have to change, but this model is newer and £300 ($600) cheaper.
Or should I pay the extra for the 2.7Ghz Dual, (which has a Radeon 9650 256mb).
Head is spinning - the decisions, the decisions
    Any advise greatly appreciated.

    dual g5 2.5 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't know how you do it, but I do know there is a way to link Macs in an "Xgrid" (see sharing in sys prefs) for linking them together to make a faster machine. I don't know if intels can work with PowerPC macs like that though.
Click Start to allow Xgrid controllers to distribute tasks for your computer to perform.

  • G5 Power Mac with bad graphics card?

I have a 3 year old G5 Power Mac running 10.6.4 and a 30" Cinema Display. Sometimes, in the middle of a task, my display goes black. Can't bring it back and have to sometimes restart the computer 2-3 times before the display comes back on. This has also happened with my previous 23" monitor so it seems to be the computer. Is my graphics card going bad?
    Thanks for any help.

Did you ever update the firmware?
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/ATIRadeon_X1900_XT_FirmwareUpdate
Is the card clean? The X1900 is a notorious dust catcher, resulting in premature death due to over heating.

  • OWA using Safari or other browser on mac with Cable Moden

Hello. I have a powerbook g4 with 10.4.3. My office (which uses PC) has moved to Outlook Web Access for accessing office email remotely. I cannot get ANY browser to work with OWA on my Mac. I can usually log in, but OWA kicks me off within minutes (if not less), and brings me back to the log-in screen, even if I am actively suing OWA to type an email. I have tried Safari, Firefox, Opera and IE for Mac. My IT department thinks the problem is with cable modems. They have tested OWA on a Mac with DSL access, and have no problems. They think it may be some kind of setting to "connect on demand" as opposed to "always on". Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? Thanks in advance.
    Holly

    Trevor,
Thank you for your post. I will confirm for sure, but I think they are using exchange 2003. Mac users that are using Safari with OWA with a DSL connection (as opposed to cable modem) are not having any problems - they report that OWA works well with safari. So I think it is some combination of the non-IE browswer WITH cable modem that is causing the problem.

  • I have a G5 Power Mac with dual 1.8 processors. I recently upgraded the software fro 10.4.11 to 10.5.8 in order to get an iPad 2. Now my Adobe Photoshop 7 won't work any longer. All the newer Phtoshop versions only work with Intell processors. Does anyone

..know of an older Photoshop version that will work with my processors and system 10.5.8?
    Thanks,
    Don

I believe I had this issue with PS7 when I first upgraded from OS 9 to OS X 10.2 Jaguar.
Couldn't get PS 7 to launch at all.
I ended up having to update all of my Adobe apps to the CS edition to be sure every Adobe app functioned without a hitch.
I am not sure where you'll find older versions of Adobe software, though.
You could try and contact Adobe direct to see if they have any older versions on disc left in stock or not.
Short or that I  really do not know.
PS CS 4 was the last universal version that works with PPC Macs.
Pixelmator used to be available for 10.5 Leopard, but it's no longer available for PPC Macs, either.
    http://www.pixelmator.com/
Could contact them to see if they have the older version still available on disc or as a download.
This is a pay app, also.
Another pay app that may work for you is Graphic Converter.
    http://www.lemkesoft.com/
The other options are the ones already mentioned in the previous reply.
Other than Pixelmator, the other offerings are quite limited compared to PS.
    Here's the link to Seashore.
    http://seashore.sourceforge.net/The_Seashore_Project/About.html
A free open source Unix replacement for PS is The Gimp
    http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/
You need to install X11 in order to use this app.
If you installed 10.5, you'll need to check your Applications folder to see if X11 was installed by default.
If not you'll need to go back to your OS X 10.5 install discs and do a custom install and just install X11 from disc.
This will just add the additional program and extensions and will not erase your installation of OS X 10.5.

  • Dual G4 Power Mac is Dead??? Need HELP!

Dual 1.25 G4 will turn on, fans amps up loud, screen stays black and no startup tone. I was on vacation and left it on by accident for 4 days with the monitor on. My brother turned it off for me using the monitor power button when he saw it.
I am having issues very similar to this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=469582&tstart=0
I have tried a deep reset, reset the PRam, battery voltage is 3.6 volts, reseated the Ram, processor, and video card, unplugged anything extra and just left it as stock. (by the way the processor heat sink is cold when it usually gets quite warm)
But still no progress or response from the two displays (20" and 17" studios)
I was thinking that I killed the video card by leaving it on for that long, but wouldn't I get a startup tone if the computer was still working?
I don't want to spend $400 to replace the processor or logic board. I might as well spend that towards a new computer if this can't be fixed more easily.
    Thanks for your help.
    -Jake

    AirTahoe,
As you see from my post it turned out to be the processor, however plenty of users have been able to solve the similiar problem with different techniques. Most of those issues are posted in my thread. Do you have access to another mac that you can swap parts with to test your processor, or perhaps an authorized repair location? Unfortunately I did not and ended up ebaying some parts (I recently seen a dual 1.25 on ebay that went for about $200) and ended up solving my issue. Let us know what happened.
Did you try removing the battery, reset pmu, wait, start with no battery?

  • Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer & Power Mac G5

For some reason my G5 want read a Memorex DVD+R Dual Layer disc that my friend burnt for me. I put the disc in, and the computer just spits it back out at me. Is this normal? What can I do? I got my G5 in 2004 can newer G5s read Dual layers? My friend made it on a Power Book so I dont see why I cant read the disc.

Yes, they are relatively new. For more on the history of DVD, see this page:
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
I typically buy double sided DVD-R disks to burn more than 4.7 GB of data. These you flip over when you want more content than can fit on one side of a DVD. Alas you have to split up the content. Depending on the type of content this can be done by segmenting an image, or compressing the data itself and segmenting a compressed file. What's odd is that some disks which appear on the surface to be dual layer because of their single sided capacity, such as the Tiger installation DVD, are in fact readable by all DVD drives that are on Macs, whereas the commercial DVD+R DL is not. I don't know the difference between commercial and consumer grade Dual Layer disks, but there does appear to be one which makes them readable on Commercial grade whereas Consumer is not on older DVD players.

  • Power Mac with Insomnia

Suddenly, my Mac refuses to go to sleep. It keeps trying, automatically, but a second later, fans whirr and the screen relights. I can't even make it go to sleep manually, it simply refuses and powers back up. I have no idea what's causing this, since I've not added any new apps or programs. HELP! I've had this Mac for several years -- is it just overwhelmed? It has run beautifully so far.....

Thanks to both Carolyn and Malcolm. Carolyn, I was able to locate two of the files you listed and dumped them -- no effect on the insomnia issue. Then I decided, to **** with it, and lugged the tower to the Apple store and the so-called Genius. Wouldn't you know it, Malcolm, but as soon as the tower was hooked up to a store monitor, keyboard and mouse, I was able to put the system to sleep. I figured the silly thing simply needed a car ride, like an infant. Genius suggested the same thing you did -- plug in all my peripherals one by one since it didn't seem to be a software problem. Back home, I plugged in the monitor, mouse and keyboard and presto! Problem back. I unplugged keyboard and monitor and plugged the mouse into the monitor -- same problem. I switched my old Pro Mouse with my daughter's Mighty Mouse and was able to put system to sleep. How odd. OK -- maybe the fault lay with my old keyboard and mouse which have had many years of abuse, including liquid spills and crumbs. Off to the store for new keyboard and mouse. Back home, plugged in all peripherals, including new purchases, booted up system and put to sleep. Same old problem. Now I'm really confused and irritated. To cut a long evening of multiple variations short, I finally discovered that if I plugged my new mouse into the monitor and plugged everything else into the tower, I was able to put system to sleep. Is that crazy? If anyone can explain to me what's going on, I'd be thrilled. Thanks in advance.

  • Where do I get an older version for a G5 Power Mac with 10.3.9 OS?

I tried to download 3.6.17 three times from one site but it said the file was corrupt and it would not install. I really hate the propriatory nature of macs... I hate their browser...but I can't seem to install Firefox nor IE? I'd much rather prefer Firefox.

  • ITunes 10.4.1 does not function on my Mac with 10.5.8.

HELP HELP !!!!!!!!!   I have a G5 dual processor Power Mac with leopard 10.5.8 installed. I have used itunes with my iphone and ipad for 3 years and never had any problems.
I updated to itunes 10.4.1 and now itunes doesn't show the ipad or iphone in the left column to sync. It automatically starts the itune app
when i plug in the iphone or ipad but that is all. I also can not access the itunes store now either. iphoto seems to work fine --it recognizes the iphone and ipad.
I have tried various things from uninstalling iTunes and deleating the Apple mobile device support and more. I downloaded iTunes 10.4.1 to my desktop
and reinstalled. Ended up with same issue. Someone said to use the diagnostics under the help meny in iTunes....That isn't availiable with mine.
If I use time machine to reinstall itunes 10.3.1 it syncs just fine and i then can access the store.
    Has anyone any other ideas???????

I had a similar problem. My iTunes didn't start automatically when I connected any of my devices after the upgrade to iTunes 10.4.1.
I found I had to add the iTunesHelper.app in System Preferences->Users & Groups under my account on the Login Items tab.
You have to navigate to it in finder, because I couldn't seem to do "Show Package Contents" on iTunes.app in the Applications folder from the file dialog you get when you hit '+'.
Once you have opened the package contents of the iTunes.app then the iTunesHelper.app is in Contents/MacOS. I just dragged and dropped into the Login Items window, then ticked it to start on login.
Note, this will only start it when you log in, to start it immediately just double click iTunesHelper.app in finder.

  • Graphics Problems with Leopard, ATI X800 XT, and Power Mac G5

I just upgraded to Leopard. I'm using a Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 with an ATI X 800 XT graphics card installed, and a Dell 24" monitor running at 1900x1200 resolution. After about 5-15 minutes, the screen starts shimmering with these green lines everywhere. It keeps getting worse to the point where I can't see anything and have reboot. Then, it starts all over again after another 5-15 minutes. The only way to solve this problem is to turn down the resolution to 1360x768. My fan is also running at max speed constantly since I've upgraded. I was hoping that 10.5.1 update would fix it, but it hasn't.
I've spent the last hour reading posts on this forum related to my problem to see if there is a solution, and as far as I can tell there isn't one. Is there something I missed for fixing the display and fan problems? Is there any hope that 10.5.2 will fix this? I've never had problems like this with any of the other OSX upgrades. I'm basically forced to go back to Tiger for now until this problem is solved. I can't believe ATI hasn't updated their drivers for my card since 2005!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey Masai,
It sounds like a problem I had when I first got a new ATI X800 XT last October. When I first installed the card, there were what looked like florescent green symbols all over the screen which would get worse if I moved a window around. I ended up returning the card to ATI and exchanging it for a new one.
If you could post a screen shot, I could confirm the similarities in our problems. My problem was caused, I think, by the card overheating . . . which was the result, I speculate, of a disconnect between the X800's memory chips and heat sink.
I got a second card, and it's been working perfectly with Leopard. In my case, the card itself was the problem and not Leopard and/or graphics drivers.
Hopefully that's not the case with your situation. Did the card work okay under Tiger or whatever your previous OS was?

  • G4 Power Mac compatibility with new monitor

Have a G4 Power Mac with dual 1.25 processors and a Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card. What limits on flat panel monitors does this system have? 22", 24" or resolution?

What monitors work with a given graphics card is limited by the resolution the card will support. Size of the screen, as such, is irrelevant. The Radeon 9000 I believe supports up to 1920 by 1200 pixels via ADC or DVI and up to 2048 by 1536 via VGA (through a VGA extractor).

  • What do I need to make my Dual 2 GHz Power Mac G5, 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM wireless?

I was looking at getting this
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000899ZB/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1363349066&sr=8-1&pi=S L75
But it's not compatible with the Mac Pro or the Power Mac G5 Dual and Power Mac G5 Quad computers.
I'm having a hard time find what is compatible.

Dual Processor and Dual Core are not the same.
The Late 2005 G5 had single dual core processors in 2.0 and 2.3 GHz, with the Quad having dual dual core processors.
Earlier G5s were all pre-multi core processors, so would be dual processors.
