Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces Simple RAID 0 VERY SLOW reads, but fast writes with LSI 9207-8e SAS JBOD HBA Controller
Has anyone else seen Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces with a Simple RAID 0 (also happens with Mirrored RAID 1 and Parity RAID 5) virtual disk exhibiting extremely slow read speed of 5Mb/sec, yet write performance is normal at 650Mb/sec in RAID 0?
Windows Server 2012 Standard
Intel i7 CPU and Motherboard
LSI 9207-8e 6Gb SAS JBOD Controller with latest firmware/BIOS and Windows driver.
(4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Enterprise Hard Disk Drives HUS724040ALE640
(4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Desktop Hard Disk Drives HDS724040ALE640
Hitachi drives are directly connected to LSI 9207-8e using a 2-meter SAS SFF-8088 to eSATA cable to six-inch eSATA/SATA adapter.
The Enterprise drives are on LSI's compatibility list. The Desktop drives are not, but regardless, both drive models are affected by the problem.
Interestingly, this entire configuration but with two SIIG eSATA 2-Port adapters instead of the LSI 9207-8e, works perfectly with both reads and writes at 670Mb/sec.
I thought SAS was going to be a sure bet for expanding beyond the capacity of port limited eSATA adapters, but after a week of frustration and spending over $5,000.00 on drives, controllers and cabling, it's time to ask for help!
Any similar experiences or solutions?

1) Yes, being slow either on reads or on writes is a quite common situation for storage spaces. See references (with some of the solutions I hope):

and this one is my favorite putting a lot of light on the issue:

2) Issues with SATA-to-SAS hardware is also very common. See:

Hi,
I have make a new and clean install of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials on my office network server and then i made a new and clean install of Windows 8.1 Enterprise version on one of my office desktops.
After all VPN and Anywhere Access where setup on the server i when to a PC that is inside my office network and browse on Internet Explorer to the URL to connect this PC to the server and make it part of the domain.
But when i browse to the http://MYSERVERNAME/connect im not getting the Windows Server page with the option to download the windows connector. Instead i get a login pop-up saying "iexplore" and "digest". I try to create a user on the server
and use that user login details on this login box, but even then, the only thing i get is a blank page saying a HTTP Error 404.
So can someone please help me on this? Any advice on how to solve this problem in order to show the normal Windows Server connect page?
ThanksHi,
Based on your description, please refer to following operations and troubleshoot this issue. Then check if
can help us to narrow down the cause of this issue.
Please type
http://server-IP-address/connect in IE. Then check if encounter the same issue.
On the Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, please open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager. Navigate to Sites, then right click Default Web Site and select
Edit Bindings… In Site Bindings, select Port 80 and click “Edit…” button. Would you please provide a screenshot of the Edit Site Binding (Port 80) that you can see?
Then please click
Connect which in the list of Default Web Site. In the mid panel, select
.NET Authorization Rules and double click it. Then please check if all users were allowed.
By the way, would you please provide a screenshot of the login page when you browser
http://servername/connect? It may help me to understand this issue clearly.
Meanwhile, please logon a problematic client computer and navigate to the path: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows
Server\Logs folder. Then check if there is Computerconnector log file. If there is, please check it if can find some clues. (Please note: the log file is a hidden file. Please open Control Panel, select Folder Options, select View tab and check Show hidden
files, folders and drives. Then you will be able to find the log file.)
If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.

Windows Server 2012 HyperV VMs becoming extremely sluggish and slow
I have recently set up a new system for a client consisting of a single Dell T320 server with Xeon E5-2350 2.2GHz 6 core cPU and 32GB of RAM. Windows Server 2012 Standard is installed on the bare metal, and runs only the HyperV role. It is not
joined to any domains.
It hosts two VMs, one a Windows Server 2012 Standard VM containing the RDS related roles acting as remote desktop server, with 10GB RAM allocated and 3 cores. Only 5 people use the terminal server concurrently.
The second VM is a Windows Server 2008 R2 based primary domain controller, with 16GB of RAM allocated and 3 cores. It runs the AD role, as well as Exchange and GFI MailEssentials 2012. Avira is also installed on this VM.
The problem is that the system will function properly for 3-4 days, then suddenly it goes into a state where a multitude of applications would start consuming inordinate amount of CPU time, and become very, very slow. Almost like the hypervisor goes
into a software emulation mode where everything runs like molasses. This affects BOTH VMs equally. For example, Exchange and GFI on the Windows 2008 R2 VM together consume about 25% CPU, most of it is spent in kernel CPU time. At the same
time, in the other Windows Server 2012 VM, svchost, Taskmgr, WMIPrvSE, LogonUI, Explorer, sqlservr, wsmprovhost etc. will all consume a total of about 70% CPU time, this time 99% of this is user time, not kernel time. When one user starts any application,
be that internet explorer, firefox or TaxPrep, the CPU spikes up to 100%.
All while nobody is using the system, the system is idle and no mails are flowing in or out of the system. A reboot of the VMs does not fix anything, even a reboot of the host server does not fix anything. When I yanked out the two power supplies
and performed a hardware diagnostic (which came back 100% OK), it booted up and the slowness was gone for 3 days, until today when it started acting up again like I described above.
One more thing, when the system behaves normally the sunspider javascript benchmark in IE10 takes 316ms to execute (average) on the HyperV host operating system. When the system goes slow like this, I pause the two VMs in HyperV then run sunspider
again, only to be greeted by an average time of 5084ms. So this clearly does not only affect the virtual machines but the host operating system as well. My gut still tells me the hypervisor is getting messed up somehow.
Any ideas? This is a major problem and I have no idea what is causing it.We have had the EXACT same thing happen with a Dell T320 on two separate servers. The first one was running SQL Server 2008 with nothing else funny going on. It ran fine for a month or so, then it developed this slowness issue. We finally installed SQL on
a loaner box (without Hyper-V) and it worked fine. We brought the T320 back to our shop and tested the hell out of it with Dell's assistance and it was NTF. Took it back onsite and moved an SBS 2011 VM over to it. After a few days, it ground to a halt. CPU
utilization was 100%. I started shedding services, killing Exchange, Sharepoint, etc. Even stripped to the essentials, the CPU was still up in the 60-70% range.
I put a T310 out onsite and downed the guest SBS vm. I copied the HUGE vhd over to the T310 (running Server 2008r2 with the Hyper-V role) and it ran perfectly. CPU at about 2-4%, spiking to 15% occasionally.
We finally concocted a story that the USB controller was bad, so they replaced the motherboard (not the CPUs) and it all seems to be working OK now after we sunk at least 100 man-hours into the problem.
Our second one is a similar setup. T320, Server 2012, Hyper-V role, SBS 2011 Standard and a couple of member servers running basic apps. No one can find any problem and everyone acts like this is something new, although my posting comes one year after Tim's
original posting.

Windows server 2012 stops accepting simple remote desktop clients
Hi, I have a Standard Windows 2012 Standalone server as host for several Virtual machines ( f.e. AD and Exchange)because I do not use a keybord ar mouse for that server I always use simple RD to maintain that host.
Since sunday I cannot connect anymore. I checked Rd configuration, network and Client ( W7). Nothing to find why.
Se below the result of checking the host:
Windows PowerShell

RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-TCP True
RemoteDesktop-UserMode-In-UDP True
So everything seems to be correct.
I do not have installed Remote desktop server/services etc. because ther is no need to.
I did not change anything on the host, no updates etc short before the problem occurred. Even not on the clients
Where to look to find the solution. On internet I could not find it, only that what I already checked.Hi,
Thanks for your comment. Sorry for late response.
How many users you are trying to remote desktop at a time?
I am asking here because from your troubleshooting you have done all your steps but seems you are moving out for more session connection and that’s why you can’t connect.
Because by default server only provide 2 remote session at a time and that is also for administration purpose. So if you are trying to get more than 2 remote session for your server then you need to install RD Licensing server, activate the server, purchase
RDS CAL (per user or per Device) as per your requirement and then configure them. After this you can get more connection.
Please clarify and review this point 1 under this KB 2477176 article (only for reference).
Hope it helps!
Thanks.

Windows server 2012 R2 does not recognize DVD burner as read/write device
I've seen problem fixes for this on Windows 7 but nothing on 2012 R2.
I changed the drive letter on the server (2012 R2 with all current updates) and now it does not recognize the working DVD burner as a read/write device.
The device does work correctly with other Operating Systems on the same hardware. The box is a Lenovo D30.
Any idea as to how to go about this fix. All Microsoft troubleshooter downloads run and say the problem was corrected but no luck in burning anything.Hi,
Did you run this?

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Studio Express silent installation very slow
Iam doing silent installations often on several Systems.
I install the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Studio Express with this command:
"SQLManagementStudio_x64_DEU.exe /ACTION=INSTALL /QUIET /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms="True" /FEATURES=CONN,BC,SSMS /indicateprogress"
The installation will take almost an hour to finish.
I never get error messages or so. The installation afterwards is fine.
Is there a way to speed up the installation process?
Thanks!Hi Dennis,
When installing SQL Server Management Studio, it is normal for us taking an hour to finish the installation.
Personally, if you want to speed up the installation process, I recommend improve your hardware device on your computer, such as CPU, RAM, hard disk and so on.
Or you can submit an submit the requirement at https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/.
If the requirement mentioned by customers for many times, the product team may consider to add or improve this requirement in the future SQL Server version. Thanks for your understanding.
Thanks,

I have an Acer netbook, with 2GB ram and Vista Basic. I installed firefox 4 and now the machine cannot keep up with my typing. The letters are delayed appearing on the screen in all apps, but especially in email, and words just get lost if I type too fast, and I am not a fast typist. Should I remove firefox 4?
Have you tried updating your software? The issue with the keys will either be a software issue or an issue with your hardware, if you're on the newest software try re-installing it. It's very simple to do using the desktop software, if this does not work it seems to be a hardware issue, meaning repair or replacement is needed.
Also, updating/re-installing your software should also resolve any slow/freezing issues and hopefully stop your dialling problem.
Hope this helps

James McIllecehello again,

http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/10/09/nfs-identity-mapping-in-windows-server-2012.aspx
Likely to be overseen at the end of one paragraph it says:
"Client for NFS does not support NFS V4.1 in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012"
Question : Is this an official statement and is it still valid with most recent
Windows Server 2012 R2 that NFS client does NOT support NFSv4.x ??

Windows Phone 8 SDK on Windows Server 2012
Is possible to install the windows phone 8 sdk on a windows server 2012?
Is also possible to develop and deploy modern ui app with Visual Studio 2012 on Server 2012?
Thanks.
federicoYes you can :)
Follow the following steps and I hope you can.
1-First of all install hyper-v role from server manager.
2-Install Windows Phone SDK 8.0 from official Microsoft Web.
3-Update Visual Studio Express 2012(Update 4) for Windows Phone. Search it on Bing you will get the update.
That's it. Now you should be able to run it properly even if you are on NON-SLAT machine you can run the Emulator without any problem.
If this solves your problem, please mark this reply as answer.

Hi,
Every time we try to install KB3000850 on a Windows Server 2012 R2 (Virtual), it says it installs successfully, reboots, but then before the logon screen comes up it says "We couldn't complete the updates, undoing changes..." and it uninstalls
the update. Yet, when you look at installed updates, it shows KB3000850 yet it's still availabe when you look for new updates, and if you run the update again manually, it doesn't say that it's already installed. What gives? :)

Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3042553)
Hello,
Security Update for Windows Server 2012 R2 (KB3042553) has been advised to be critical update to deal with Vulnerability in HTTP.sys which could allow remote code execution.
However due to some reason I am unable to apply the patch to any of the Windows 2012 R2 servers. It errors - The update is not applicable to your computer, when tried to install manually / locally.
I tried to push it via WSUS and the patch is not getting detected by the servers.
Regional language settings are set to match Windows display language (Which is English).
Is anyone else experiencing this issue too? If so is there way to get this deployed please.
Thank you.
Kumar GHi Kumar,
I suggest you check the file version of Http.sys and compare it with the one documented in the KB article below:
MS15-034: Vulnerability in HTTP.sys could allow remote code execution: April 14, 2015

Re: Windows Server 2012 as host Or Debian Jessie?
It really depends on what you are most comfortable with but if it was me I wouldn't be looking to use debian just to run Xen. If you want Xen then run Xenserver, there is really no reason not to these days. It has the latest kernels and Xen version built into 6.5 and unless you want support it is free.
I have got a brand new server with 16Tb Hard drive and 64Gb RAM. I have the following two openstions:
Option One:
- Windows Server 2012 as a host and using hyperv run Windows Server 2012 and another debian webserver as a guest.
Option Two:
- Debian Jessie as host and using Xen Windows Server 2012 and another Debian webserver as a guest.
I'm familier with both side virtualizations. I already have two Windows server 2012 licenses. But i cannot decide which opetion to choose.
