Windows upgrade within Parallels...

Hello everyone in the land of Mac!
I have recently (finally !) been able to part with cash for my first Mac, a mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro (with Parallels to allow me to use some Windows only language software.)
As I had a number of old Windows machines I used one with XP to transfer a licence to my Mac using Parallels, thinking it would transfer ONLY the OS as I had saved everything of any consequence to my v large HDD elsewhere on my home network; if fact it transferred many things including a buggy/semi-destroyed version of i-Tunes. Undeterred I decided that the best thing was to upgrade XP to Windows 7 as this forced an os only install...suited me fine!
(I don't have and never have had Bootcamp...so the transfer from this was not open to me.)
I have gone through the hoops within the Windows environment on my Mac to buy the upgrade in the UK but after paying for & downloading the 64 bit option of Windows 7 I have an image file and a prompt screen that is asking me to determine the destination BUT it shows only two options, 1) Mac HD 2) the image file for Windows 7 and as I guess the source needs to be the Windows 7 .img it leaves me using the Mac HD as the destination but then says that it will erase everything..........so I stop and call and then go to see the very helpful retailer I bought my Mac from, but they have no-one with the expertise in today and in the UK the schools are now on holiday so the place is crammed with juveniles and the staff are vv busy....pheew!
Sorry this is a long question but does anyone know how best to use the Parallels PC to Mac transfer and then upgrade from XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit?
Hope you can help
Yours, desparately wanting to not have a discussion about Windows vs Mac btw this refers to my significant other...oh and yes I know about all the benefits of Mac, see previous
Mel

I have managed to install my Win 7 upgrade to my Win XP copy within Parallels -whooop whoop!
I will confess to being not entirely certain but I think what did it was me exiting Parallels, copying the .img file to  DVD and going back to Parallels and asking to create a new Virtual Machine from an image file or the closest equivalent to this description (there are only two options to choose from and I wasn't going to hit the "back" button at any point this far in to it!, sorreee guys!)... the key here was for definite "CREATE NEW"...follow your nose thereafter or please try to catch me UK time for more help (within 24hrs I'm yours ), after what I've been through I'll be only too happy, honest, there's not enough life left
A friend of mine died today, and that means I have so much more to live for, 'cos I have so much more to do that she would have done Don't ever be sorry, be driven!
PS I love my Mac now!

  • Trying to install internet camera thru Windows XP within Parallels

I recently purchased a Panasonic KX-HCM250 wireless internet camera and am trying to configure it using my Mac Book Pro thru Windows XP running within Parallels. I managed to get the camera to show the video images thru the internet using the provided setup software that came with the camera. However, I can't create a website account for it since the program that came with the Internet Camera is asking for the default gateway, DNS server 1, and DNS server 2 which are all showing as 0.0.0.0. I searched for it in the Network category within the Systems Preference within Mac OSX, but its not showing anything. I got in touch with my ISP (Roadrunner High Speed Online) they tried to help me but was unable to retrieve the DNS & Gateway either. They say it may be because the internet camera is going thru a router first, that's why its not showing the info I need. My network connection is as follows, the airport extreme is attached to the Internet modem. A Lynksys Workgroup Hub is attached to the Airport Extreme. I also have an Airport Express where the Internet Camera is currently hardwired to (it was previously connected to the hub). However, can't get any info on the Gateway & DNS.
Can anyone help me with this. I'm very new to networking and just learning as i go. thx.

    Hi Duane,
Thank you for your quick response to my post.
So the WAN side IP address of the AEBS is the same as the Router info, which is the same as the DNS & Gateway info? I went to the Network section in my Systems Preferences, went to TCP/IP for the Airport, and that's where i found the value you mentioned (10.0.1.1) under Router. The IP Address has a different value on it.
Anyway, I tried to enter this value & the IP Address value in the Internet Camera setup software and webpage, it was saying that both attempts were a success, but it still wasn't sending me the info to setup the webpage for the Camera (it mentioned that I will be receiving an introductory email with the instructions to register the camera (if it is able to communicate with my camera.)

  • Can't run windows install/upgrade within windows installed on boot camp

I have an issue which seems to be something related to the new version of boot camp. I have installed Win7 on my mac, but my disc is special which requires it to be used as an upgrade. I am able to install it on a formatted partition but can't activate it until I run windows 7 setup again within windows and "Upgrade" itself. I cannot run windows setup within boot camp win7. I get the message: "Windows was unable to create a required installation folder. Error code: 0x80070005"
The reason I say "new" version of boot camp is because I found old solutions to this problem where you just have to uninstall the boot camp stuff from Windows, but you can no longer do that it seems.
Does anyone have a clue as to how I can get around this and do the upgrade?

Even though it worked fine with the old motherboard setup?  Before I tried installing windows 98 and ME, it would automatically run scandisk and it didn't report any errors.

I have a new Macbook pro and need to run some Windows software, it appears "Parallel" should work well from what I've have read. Will I have any issues or problems accessing and printing from various printers on my Windows 7 network within Parallel? Is Parallel in fact the best way to go?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Installing windows 8 upgrade via parallel 8 on MBP 13" retina

I just bought a MBP 13" retina and wish to purchase parallel 8 so as to install windows 8. Using parallel 8, is it possible to install windows 7 first and then follow by windows 8 upgrade? Is there any other option to install windows 8? For your information, I already owned windows 7 original sofware and intend to buy the windows 8 upgrade before the dateline 31st January 2013. Thank you.

Boot Camp is a method of booting Windows and using the entire machine hardware as essentially a Windows PC.
Parallels provides a way of running Windows as a virtual machine concurrently with OS X.
Boot Camp provides a slightly faster Windows than Parallels, whereas Parallels offers more flexibility and the ability to run other operating systems such as Linux.

You may need to update your version of Parallels. See their website for more information.
    Best of luck.

  • Would it be possible for time machine to back-up files from 3rd party software such as windows platform using parallel?

I'm wondering if it would be possible for time machine to back-up files from 3rd party software such as Windows XP using parallel software especially if it is isolated from mac?  Any advise would be greatly aprreciated.

Short answer - yes Time Machine will backup everything within the Mac OS system.
Longer answer - Parallels creates a pvm disk image "Parallels Virtual Machine" which Time Machine backs up.
Due to the changes to the pvm file Time Machine is unable to read the minor changes and will somtimes do a full backup of it each time Time Machine runs and can chew through Back up drive space quite quickly.

Mac OS - Mavericks (fully patched)
    Parallels - Ver 9

Running an application such as Microsoft Word or Outlook  built in dictation appears to be working, however text does not appear.  I believe it was working however it may have been since I upgraded from parallels 8 to 9
    Any thoughts?

Check on a Microsoft or Parallels forum since it is their products you are having issues with.

Try installing the Cirrus driver from the BootCamp 4.0.4326 download:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1636
    BootCamp/Drivers/Cirrus
I read various things saying I should install the RealTek driver, but this didn't do me any good.  Two seconds after running the CirrusAudio32.exe, my speakers came to life.  Now Windows is dinging, chirping, and all that.
This is on a MacBook Air A1369.

  • Using an AZERTY keyboard with Windows 7 via parallels

Hi, really hope you can help, its very frustrating! I've got a macbook (10.6) with a french azerty keyboard. Its all fine using applications directly on the mac but when i use windows 7 via parallels, I don't get the correct symbols eg the button to the left of the 1 key is @ (or a # when shift is pressed as well)
I've tried changing the language to all the different french options eg canadian, moroccan etc but none of them have the correct layout
thanks in advance for any replies/advice

You probably need to change the keyboard layout in Windows
From his reference to French Moroccan I suspect he has already tried that. The problem may be that no Windows layout exactly matches the Mac layout, as is the case with several languages. But maybe there is a work-around short of someone having to create a Windows custom keyboard layout.

  • How to install Windows XP in parallel with Mac OS on a Macbook?

Can anyone tell me how to install Windows XP in parallel with Mac OS on a Macbook?
If I divide the hard drive into 2 patritions and install Win XP & Mac OS on each patrition, is it ok?

I don't think he meant "Parallels", I think he just meant "parallel", with a little 'p'.
There are three options for running Windows software on an Intel-based Mac:
Virtualization: you can install software such as Parallels or VMWare (along with a licensed copy of Windows) which will emulate the environment necessary to run Windows software. Performance is significantly degraded, but you can work with both Windows and Mac software simultaneously.
Dual boot: You can use Apple's Bootcamp to partition your drive and create a CD of Windows drivers for your devices, so that you can then install Windows on one partition of your drive. Your Windows software will run just as it does on any other Windows PC, but you have to reboot to switch between Windows and OS X.
Crossover: Crossover is a product that allows you to run Windows programs in OS X without installing Windows. Not all Windows software will work with Crossover though.
