Windows XP Pro

I recently purchased a new iMac 24" with 3.06 GHz Intel Dual Core processor, 4GB memory, etc.
I was hoping to "consolidate" computers by installing Windows XP on a partition and moving my PC stuff over to the Mac to have a dual-booting system (I'll give the old PC to my kids to play with after I delete the old stuff and do a clean re-install of XP).
I purchased an OEM disc of XP Pro (SP2) 64 bit before I read the Boot Camp manual which says I have to install the 32 bit version. Before I send the package back to TigerDirect, is this true or is there a workaround? If there is a workaround, is the benefit worth the headache? I just figured with a zorkier computer I should get a zorkier OS. My old PC has the XP Home OS (via multiple upgrades all the way from Windows ME), so my plan was to use the 32 bit XP Home OEM disc (also from TigerDirect) to do the install on the PC. I want to do it legally, so if need be I'll exchange the XP Pro for another XP Home OEM disc.
Any sage advice would be appreciated.

XP 64-bit is an odd OS in that few use it and XP itself is being phased out. I suggest Vista Ultimate 64-bit which is now supported by Apple.
I have been running Vista 64-bit on this MBP since the Tiger/BC Beta days. The only problem I had initially was the lack of 64-bit driver support for the networking, but I fixed that by scouring the net for drivers.
This is no longer needed. BC2.1 for Vista 64-bit is available, and Vista will have MS support for years to come, whereas XP is being deprecated.
Also, there is not update path from 32-bit to 64-bit OSs, so if you want to go 64, which I recommend, Vista is the choice.
I have zero issues with it on this MBP and find it to be an excellent OS in its own right.

  • I am using Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit on a brand new PC, and cannot connect to the iTunes store using iTunes version 10.  HELP!!

Ok, so after purchasing a new computer, with windows 7 pro, 64 bit, I tried downloading the newest iTunes, which at the time was 10.2.1 (i believe).  After installation, everything seemed to work, except that iTunes was unable to securely connect to the internet, use home sharing, or validate my computer.
As troubleshooting, I first ran msconfig, and then turned OFF all programs that boot at start up EXCEPT itunes and quicktime.  After a restart, i opened itunes again, and got the same result.  That led me to believe that iTunes was NOT being blocked by another program on my machine.  I am currently running itunes 10.7 successfully on a Windows 7 32 machine at work.  Anyhow, for grins, I tried to install version 9 on the new computer, and it installed perfectly, and immediately connected to the itunes store, leading me to believe that there is nothing wrong with my software configuration (not sure if this is a safe assumption or not).  I then tried to let iTunes update itself using the automated update function.  It tried to update itself to the most current version, then 10.6.  Again, iTunes was unable to connect to the iTunes store.  I HAVE tried disabling the anti-virus software (AVG), but that made no difference.
I have since gone back and reinstalled iTunes 9.  Here's the catch though.  When I reinstalled using version 9, I had to redo all my library files.  I'm about 1/2 way through my CD's, and now have a substantial library file going.  The last time I let iTunes update itself to 10.6, once I realized that it was not going to connect to the store, I uninstalled iTunes, and reinstalled ver. 9.  However, when I did this, it told me it could no longer open the library file, because it was a newer .itl or .xml (i believe it was one of those two extensions) library file.  At that point, I basically started everything over again, using version 9, and have been importing CD's like a madman at night.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Is there a way to make a copy of the files that store my library info, so that if my upgrade to ver 10 IS NOT SUCCESSFUL, I can restore ver 9, but still have all of the album art work, playlists (when I import music, I create a playlist with the artists' name, and store things that way), etc. in tact?
    2) What else can I try (firewall settings, internet options, etc.) to try and get version to to successfully install?  I would really like to get all the benfits of the newer versions.
    3) When I tried to get apple tech support before, they wanted me to pay a ridiculous 69$ fee for phone support.  I just bought an iphone 5....this should entitle me to a fresh 90 days of phone support, right?  The reason I ask here is that I could hardly understand the "tech" that answered the phone when I called for tech support last time, and to be honest, it really ****** me off that they wanted to try and milk me for another 69 bucks....I've purchased every iPhone since the 3Gs came out (pre-ordered at that), and have nearly gone broke purchasing music from their iTunes store....heck, maybe they're doing me me a favor not letting me into the store, huh?
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated,
    -Brian

  • 1st Gen Shuffle not recognized by Windows XP Pro

I cannot get my 1st gen shuffle to be seen by Windows XP Pro. We have all the updates, the latest version of iTunes. The Shuffle plays, it connects to another computer running Windows XP. I see several messages here that point to different articles. The only thing we haven't done is edit the registry.

Have you tried going through the steps here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305136
If that doesn't work, sometimes other USB devices plugged in can cause this. You may want to try removing any other USB devices plugged into the CPU (other than the keyboard and mouse).
Also, what version of iTunes are you running? Check that by going along the top of iTunes and choosing Help>About iTunes.

Now I have a new computer (Windows 7 Pro usb 3 facilities) but my usb 3 device is not recognized thru the usb 3. If I plug it into an usb 2 (still available) it works, but the system tells me that it would be better to use an usb 3 port since it would be

Could it be due because that device was previously formatted thru an usb 2 port?

    Hi,
Have you installed the related driver for USB 3.0? In my view, it should be related to your driver for USB 3.0. You can get this driver from manufacturer website.

  • Print to LaserJet 3150 Shared by Windows XP Pro

I have an older, but servicable LaserJet 3150 hooked to my Windows XP Pro desktop at work.
A long time ago, I set it up to share with OS X by creatign a virtual printer using GhostScript and some other queuing utility - this made is look like a PostScript Laserwriter. Worked great!
Alas, as common with Windows, the system decided to blow iteself away, and had to be rebuilt. I did not keep recipee, and cannot find it online.
Has anybody seen it? The problem is that the LaserJet 3150 is a impure PCL printer using its own format.

  • Windows 2008 R2 SP1 (64bit) shared folders no longer work with Windows 7 Pro but do work with WindowsXP & Windows 2003

As of last week, our Windows 7 Pro workstations can not map or browse the Windows 2008 Server shares. They can ping the Windows 2008 server. The Windows 7 Pro machines can still access the Windows 2003 Server Shares. The older workstations running Windows
XP can still map to the both the Windows 2003 & Windows 2008 Servers. All the servers can browse to each others shared folders (2 windows 2003 server & 1 windows 2008 server).

Ok, now you're down to network or permissions issues. An unedited ipconfig /all
of server and problem workstation may help. You could also try setting up some auditing.

  • Photoshop 7 (& other old Adobe programs) installation in Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

Recently I purchased a new computer running Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) with 2 TB hard drive and 16 GB memory and faced the task of trying to install Photoshop 7, Illustrator 8, Acrobat 8 Pro, and Dreamweaver CS3 that I had used very satisfactorily on my old Windows XP SP 3, 2GB memory computer with less than 1 TB hard drive. I now have all of these running successfully on my new computer and thought I would share here my experience gleaned from a number of other forums after many hours. I had the most problem with Photoshop 7 which I will describe last. In all cases I had the original genuine installation disks. These are generally needed except for Illustrator 8.
Dreamweaver CS3 -- This installed easily in the Program Files (x86) folder & does not seem to require running in XP compatibility mode
Acrobat 8 Pro -- Same as Dreamweaver CS3
Illustrator 8 -- The installation disk would not work for Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. A solution I found in a Microsoft forum is simply to copy the Illustrator folder and contents into the ProgramData folder on the new computer along with the following dll files in the C\Windows folder of the old computer: icccodes.dll, kpcp32.dll, kpsys32.dll, pcdlib32.dll, pfpick.dll, sprof32.dll  These go right into the Illustrator folder. This program needs to be run using XP compatibility mode (after copying preceding files go to Control Panel --> Programs --> Programs and Features --> Run programs made for previous versions of Windows -- follow directions there). It might be possible to copy into the Program Files (x86) folder too, but the ProgramData folder works. I have not actually used Illustrator after doing this, but since it started ok, I presume that there will be no problems.
Photoshop 7 -- My Photoshop 7 was an upgrade from Photoshop 5. The PS 5 installation disk would not run on Windows 7 & when I tried the PS 7 upgrade disk (autorun) I got the message that it could not find a previous version of PS & then shut down the installation. I tried the method used for Illustrator 8 above (suggested on yet another forum with an additional dll identified in another Windows folder), but I got the message "Could not complete your request because of missing or invalid personalization information". This evidently had to do with missing authentication serial code number in the registry. I found some discussion of this in forums but no workable fix in my case which involved an upgrade. Then I discovered inormation in another forum which explained that installation with the disks could be done by inserting the upgrade disk and running it from the setup.exe file instead of autorun. When you do this you are presented with the option of proving your previous version of PS by simply inserting the earlier version PS disk at this pint of the process. After doing this the installation with the upgrade disk proceeds fine. The PS 7 program can be installed in the Adobe folder within the Program Files (x86) folder. However, after doing this and trying to start PS 7 you get the following error (if your hard drive is 1 TB or greater in capacity): "Could not inititialize Photoshop because the scratch disk are full" After much reading I learned that this occurs because PS 7 apparently cannot recognize partitions (volumes) 1 TB or greater. What you need to do is set up an additional partition (volume) on your hard drive. This is easy to do. Go to Windows Help, search on "create partition", choose "Create and format a hard disk partition", and follow the directions. I decided to make a 50 GB partion I named "scratch". The system will assign a drive letter to it. To use the new partion to allow PS 7 to start you need to start PS 7 and immediately press the ALT and CTRL keys together. This will bring up a window where you tell PS 7 which drives to use for its scratch disk. You need to select the newly-created scratch disk(partition) in the first choice and leave the other choices as "None". After doing this you have one last issue. When you try to save any file in PS 7 you cannot save it directly anywhee on the C drive since that drive is 1 TB or greater. What I do is save it to the scratch drive and then later move it from there to where I want it on my C drive. I have seen it suggested to install the PS 7 program itself on the newly-created scratch drive, but I don't know if this would allow saving files to the C drive. When installed the way I have described it does not seem to require operating in the XP compatibility mode.
Hope this helps those of you who prefer working with the programs they are used to on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

  • Adobe CS3 Windows 7 Pro 64bit Issues

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Pro 64bit Edition after my system crashed.
I installed Adobe CS3 without a problem and it ran fine for a little while. Then one
day I started up Photoshop and then it just stopped working. So I decided to uninstall
it and reinstall it. When I started the installation, it halted and asked for this Adobe.dll file
so it complete. I clicked cancel and it aborted.
I have read many of the forums and they all suggest downloading a file or windows xp mode
    or virtual pc.
I have downloaded the file that it needs and it still aborts the installation. I have downloaded
windows xp mode and installed it succesfully but I have no wish to use this software virtually
because it is limited in the amount of memory it can use and seems to be a bit sluggish
regardless of how much memory I allow it to have access to. I also have no access to my second
    monitor.
Now that I have tried to install cs3 on multiple occasions, i now have to call Adobe so I can have
them reactive my copy. Adobe has to have some sort of work around or patch for this
because I cant forsee spending another grand for an upgrade to solve my problem.
    Here is my system specs:
    HP Pavilion M8530f
    AMD Phenom 9550 X4 Quad-Core processor 2.2 gigahertz
    7 gigabytes memory
ATI Radeon HD 5750 Video card
    2 monitors
    2 terrabyte hard drive

I am hoping its not because this a serious waste of having a 64 bit system if it is. do you know if this may be cause by a certain release version of cs3? i can imagine why any software would ask me to locate adobepdf.dll when it find itself on the cd. this is very puzzling. i have eliminated the video card, hard drive, and processor. frankly, i don't think i should work so hard to figure out how to eliminate a software especially when i paid so much money for it. if adobe doesn't find a solution, i guess i will have to find some other software that gets the job done without all these head aches.

This is an XP driver issue that I'm not sure how to resolve.
This is a brand new K7T Turbo (MS-6330) Limited Edition motherboard (red-colored board, not green), Ver. 3 (no RAID controller on-board)

2 hard drives installed on the primary controller - one set to master, one set to slave
CD-ROM drive is the only device on the secondary controller, set to master with no slave, and is plugged-into the end IDE cable connector
The board detects the cd drive, and I even installed Windows XP Pro WITH this cd-rom drive, installed as currently configured, which is what pisses me off.  I've installed XP four times today, try different things between installs, and nothing.  The drive works FINE outside of XP, but as soon as XP starts, the drive disappears and XP doesn't even detect it.  Also, while booting up, the start screen will lock up (activity bar freezes and hard drive activity stops) for about ten seconds (but everything's hooked-up right... I'm not a PC rookie!).

When I tried to apply patch set 9.2.0.7 to my 9.2.0.5 installation on a computer with MS Windows XP Pro SP2, shortly after the selection of the target Oracle home directory the installer told me to shut down a large number of Windows processes (like RAS, RPC, etc., about 30 in total) that are not related at all to the installation.

You are facing an annoying problem with Oracle installation on Windows.
It seems, some files are locked by
other processes than the Installer process.
The following workaround worked (for me):
Temporarily remove the reference to the Oracle Home at system startup
    1. Rename the Oracle Home \bin directory to \bin_save
    2. Reboot the system
    3. Rename the bin_save directory back to bin again
    4. Start patch installation again

When it happened the first time I had to manually shut it down and then restart it as the Win8 installation just stalled. After restart it said Windows 8 installation has failed and it successfully rolled back to my instance of Windows 7. I've

  • Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom after downgrading from Vista

    Hi everybody.
I successfully downgraded my T61p from Vista to XP Pro SP2 using the downgrade cd-roms send by Lenovo.
Everything seems to work well. I downloaded all drivers. No problem.
But I recently installed a rather old software that I frequently used on my old A31p. This software (a Microsoft program !) has automatically modified some files from XP Pro without any autorization.
Once it was done, I was asked by the system to insert the original Windows XP Pro SP2 cd-rom to repair this modification.
Of course, the (Vista to XP) downgrade cd-rom set was not recognized by the Thinkpad as the original XP set.
    An original cd-rom which I finally don't have !
I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful.
Where could I find the XP Pro SP2 cd-rom corresponding to the downgraded system ?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

    Thinkpad A31p - T42p - T61p - TP Tablet

    James,
    thanks for your answer.
But I wrote on my first post "I tried with an original XP Pro SP2 cd-rom bought a few years ago for my A31p. Unsuccessful."
Thus, I don't see any difference between an original Microsoft Windows XP2 Pro SP2 version cd-rom and one created by burning a downloaded version of the OS. An original was not recognized, what would a copy do ?
If possible, it might be probably better to create an XP Pro SP2 cd-rom from the "Rescue and Recovery" files which were reinstalled when downgrading from Vista to XP. (I hate the word "downgrade" : while I was doing it, I had the feeling I was upgrading my Thinkpad !)
I have been using for several years (and still use) an A31p (Since 2002, 8 to 10 hours a day) and a T42p. IMHO, the T61p is the same category of "great" notebooks. Thinkpads are really the best notebooks I have ever used. I noted no significant difference between IBM and Lenovo Thinkpads.
