Wireless connects via MAC address, but not with essid.

I have an eee 901 using the zeneee901 kernel. I got wireless to work out of the box to an extent. This will probably be easier to exlain just posting the commands.
ifconfig ra0 up
iwlist ra0 scan
iwconfig ra0 essid *essid here*
dhcpcd ra0
TIMEOUT GOES HERE
iwconfig ra0 ap MACADDRESS
dhcpcd ra0
Connected!
This wouldn't be so bad except I can'tuse Wicd. This was happening way before I installed Wicd btw.
What's the deal?

R00KIE wrote:The way you do it I don't know, but in wicd you can select an option to associate by essid instead of mac address and it works fine for me.
Someone else might be able to answer your question. Maybe you can consider using another network connection manager, would makes things easier. Although knowing why it doesn't work is also good
That's good, but I can't find that option. Where is it?

  • How to look up a wireless client via MAC address

One of my AirPort Expresses shows a wireless client whose MAC address I don't recognize. Is there some utility that will show me info (manufacturer, etc) of a wireless MAC address?
Also, under what conditions would one choose to set up the Wireless Mode of an AirPort Express (Extreme) to "Extend a wireless network" and when would you choose "Participate in a WDS network"? The help files don't explain this stuff very well.

If the "g" Express is set to "join", it does not extend the wireless signal, it receives the wireless signal as if it were a computer. The idea behind "join" was to provide a means for users to stream AirTunes to a remote location with an amplifier and speakers.
If you are not using it to stream AirTunes, there's really no reason to have it powered on. As you have probably discovered, the ethernet port on the "g" Express is not active.
You'll need to recheck some settings on your main base station, the Extreme to make sure that it is setup correctly. Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup and click the Wireless tab below the icons. Just make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". Update to save any changes.
The "n" Express should be configured using AirPort Utility, Manual Setup, Wireless tab. Check that your Wireless Mode is "extend a wireless network" and make sure there is a check mark next to "allow wireless clients".
As you have discovered, the ethernet port is also active on the "n" Express when you have it set to "extend" and it will also stream AirTunes. Great features on the "n" Express.
You might think about adding another "n" Express to extend to another area.
Ethernet is always the best choice for speed and stability if you are able to hide the wire through the house. If it's not feasible to run an ethernet cable, take a look at ethernet powerline adapters.
You would use a pair, one device at the Extreme end and one at the other end where you want the signal to go. These devices use the home wiring to transport an ethernet signal and they work very well. Not quite as good as straight ethernet, but close and far better than wireless overall.
I bought a pair from DirecTV to setup the On Demand service because I didn't want to crawl through a hot attic to run an ethernet cable from my office router to the DVR. Much faster than wireless...and I previously had a very good wireless connection between my Time Capsule and the Express I was using to extend.
Hope you get things figured out soon.

  • Airport wifi password--connects w/o PW but not with

I prefer to figure stuff out on my own, but this time I need community help.
I currently have a dual band airport setup for a totally Mac network. iMac 3.06 ghz connects to airport extreme ("n") at 5 ghz while my old mac book pros (G3 & G4) connect to my old Airport express (g) at 2.4 ghz. Also my Epson Artisan 800 all-in-one wifi printer connects just fine to my airport express at 2.4 ghz. Everything has worked great for a year using WPA passwords. (This was set up as a WDS--Wireless Distribution System-- following the info in "Designing Airport Networks" support download from Apple.)
PROBLEM: I'm trying to connect my Insignia Bly-ray wifi to my airport express. It connects fine if I remove password protection from my Airport Express, but when I replace the WPS AES password that has worked just fine for the last year, the Blu-ray will not connect. I thought that meant it was a problem with the Blu-ray device; however the Blu-ray connects very happily to my Airport Extreme with WPA AES password. OK, I could live with this if the Blu-ray wifi ran at 5 ghz, but it only runs at 2.4 ghz and slows down my system from 5 ghz to 2.4 ghz. I want to get the blu-ray to connect via the Airport Express (with all my other slower devices) rather than the Airport Extreme. The problem seems to be in the password for the Airport Express.
To clarify, the blu-ray wifi has no problem with the password on the Airport Extreme and all other devices (macs, printers) have no problem with password on the airport express.
I am starting to suspect that I will have to buy a separate Airport Extreme that I run at 2.4 ghz to run my slower (2.4 ghz "g") Macs, printers, and Blu-ray. But I shouldn't need to do this.
Before someone asks, yes, I have re-entered the password, checked and rechecked, turned everything off and back on. I'm very thorough in trouble-shooting. Just hope someone out there has encountered a similar problem. Or even better has set up a blu-ray wifi to connect to Airport Express.
    Thanks!

OK, I've thrown in the towel on my WDS network running the Airport Express and the Airport Extreme. It worked fine until tried to add the Blu-ray wifi to the mix. (Some conflict between it and Airport Express just refused to be resolved.) That added a level of complexity that was crazy making, so I have sent for the new Airport Extreme with simultaneous dual-band--apparently my current model will not allow for simultaneous dual band connections. I bought it just before the new model came out in 2009.
I can only hope that I be able to have every device running on the Airport Extreme without the 2.4 ghz devices slowing down my 5 ghz system. That's the theory anyway. Anyone know if this really works as advertised? I hope so. I have spent days trying to get the blu-ray wifi to connect the Airport Express on my previous setup. I hope I have not paid a bunch more money just to buy another headache. Please say something encouraging;-)
    Happy Holidays

  • E71 wifi connection works in browser, but not with...

    I need help badly.
On my Nokia E71 I can easily connect to a wireless network and browse the web from the browser. But when I try to read my Gmail from the mail client on the phone I get an error message "Unable to connect to e-mail server". The settings are correct since if I switch to GPRS/3G connection, then the client connects to the server and downloads the messages. This is weird. The same is for VoIP and Fring and Nimbuzz, they all work with GPRS/3G but they don't when I choose wi-fi.
What's more weird is that other people in the building use their person handhelds for the above purposes. The IT guy administering the network assures me no ports are blocked and that's obvious, since people use Skype and check their emails through the same wi-fi spots in the building. I fee l am missing something easy to solve, but I can't get through. Please help!

    Hello mgoksoy,
Thank you for your reply. The problem is not with wifi connectivity option but inability to connect to wifi. For instance, if I run Nimbuzz, the settings are set to request from me each time I start it which connection to use - gprs or wifi. I choose GPRS it works alright, I choose wifi it does not connect and gives me "socket connection failed!" error. I get the same error in other wifi networks, so this is not about one specific wireless network. The same is with other applications, when I choose wifi connection it simply does not connect, like to gmail via nokia email client, I get a "unable to connect to e-mail server" error, whereas if I connect with GPRS, it works fine. And one more important, I can connect to all wifi's and browse the web via browser. But it's just the applications that won't connect and I was thinking if there was a setting in my E71 that need to be adjusted to allow applications wifi connections.

  • Can connect to Mac users, but not Windows.

I have been able to connect to other Mac users signed onto AIM accounts in iChat, but not Windows users signed onto AIM. Help with this problem would be greatly appreciated, as I am at college and away from all my loved ones, and desperately want to chat with them.

    Hi,
I am sorry that only 2 hours and 15 minutes left you disappointed.
    Some things to consider.
    1) they have to be on XP.
    2) they have to be using AIM 5.9 or Trillian Pro
    3) if they use AIM 5.9 they have to Tune the Camera and Mic to the Application. See message 570 in that link (Access to these preferences in in the My AIM menu now or use F3)
    4) Whichever App they use it has to be Enabled through the XP firewall. IF at Service Pack 2 they need these instructions an earlier version of XP has to have the Firewall disabled.

The ports that iChat uses have to be opened at your end although it sounds like they are.
The port for AIM/Trillian have to opened in their modem at their end.

  • PDF-Presentation works with Macs keynote but not with iPad keynote ???

Using this Converter PDF to Keynote" ( http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~oneill/freesoftware/pdftokeynote.html ) PDF-Presentations works totaly well inside Macs keynote. Transfering with iTunes to the iPad works well, too. But opening such a presentation in iPads keynote results in "Could not import, unknown error".
Are there any tips or tricks?

  • Connecting via MAC address?

    Guys,
For some strange reason, one of our suppliers needs to install a device (Nortel Meridian media card) which cannot have an IP address configured on it.
The supplier engineer swears blind that on other sites, he can connect to this device just by using MAC address.
Is there a way to communicate with this device just using destination MAC address? I have scoured the internet with no luck so far.
We have Catalyst 4507Rs with 12.2.20 IOS.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
If it cannot be configured with an IP address, what network layer protocol does it use, if any? You can certainly communicate with it, assuming that the application being used to communicate with this device uses the same upper layer protocols. As long as the ethernet headers are compliant, the switches will forward them based on what is in the mac-address-table.
    HTH,
    Bobby

  • IPad 2 connects via iphone hotspot, but not router

I have a iPad 2 that refuses to see or connect to my "G" wi-fi network. Both my iphones and iPad mini connect to the same wi-fi network without any issues. But, the iPad 2 will connect to to my iPhone 5 via AT&T personal hotspot (wi-fi... is this really wi-fi?) and my mac via Bluetooth. I have reset the ipad 2 to factory settings, reset network settings and nothing is working to connect to a standard wi-fi network. Does this sound like the wi-fi antenna is not working?

    Hello Jeffrey Pimental,
If you are not seeing your WiFi network from your iPad 2 in order to join, you may want to try the additional steps outlined in the following article:

You may also want to double-check that the router is set up as outlined in this article:

  • Two wireless connect to each other but not the hardwire

Hello all, I have a wrk54G with Firmware 1.55.02 and two wireless access points. The two wireless access points I've been able to set up to share files just fine.
The trouble comes when I try to bring in the computer that is hard wired to the router. It can see the two other computer but when I try to access them, the system says they are not there.
I'm new to all of this and I feel like I've been going around in circles.
I've read and printed out all of the material that I can find on this, from here as well as Microsoft, so I know that I have all of the needed protocols loaded and the proper connections made.
    Any thoughts?????
    Thanks

have you tried disabling the firewall or antivirus on that specific computer first to see if that is what's causing the problems... it may be blocking your PC to be seen on the network

  • WLC only connects to MACs, Androids, but not to Windows PCs since today

Since today we have a curious "feature":
Only MAC and Android clients are able to connect to the WLAN, locked by WPA2-enterprise/Radius (Windows domain server with NAS). Windows clients are denied.
Does anyone have the same epxeriences?
    Markus

I found the solution after sveral hours of searching in google and the log-files of the NPS:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933430/en-us
Our NPS-Server contains to many entries in the trusted root certification list!!!
I tried to delete several certificates, but as you can see in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293781 this can be very critical, since I don#t know, which certificates are needed for the system
So I used Method #3 in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933430/en-us afterwards and now it seems, that all clients can connect again.

  • Restricting access via MAC address?

    Hello,
Could someone please tell me how to restrict access to my wireless network (and internet sharing) by only allowing computers with a certain MAC address to join?
    I'm kinda stumbling around here
    Thanks,
    Jonny

Sorry if I wasn't being specific enough...
I have my eMac set up as a Software Base Station, which streams internet & Airtunes to an Airport Express. I have it set up this way, because my ADSL modem is connected via USB (so it's a bit of a workaround). As a result, I have Internet Sharing switched on, so I can access it from all my other macs.
What I want to do is to stop other people from accessing my eMac's internet connection. If I set up a WEP password for Internet Sharing, I lose my Airtunes facility... so I was thinking another way might be to restrict access to the connection via MAC address. I only want my other airport card-equipped macs to access the internet connection and network generally.
    Surely it's possible?

  • WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none receive

    Hi,
WIFI stopped working after I woke the computer up, now says connected to the network but not the internet, all other coputers and devices connected still with no problems, have pinged IP address from router and got the message "4 packets sent none received"... Help
I have tried network diagnostics which doesnt help... The only other ting is, when I woke the computer up it said tat another device was using my IP... My wife had plugged her phone into the computer to charge etc but even when i turn wifi off on the phone there is no change... also in settings on the phone the IP address is different...

The answer to your question is - neither!
Your PC should to configured to obtain an IP address automatically, and to obtain DNS server IP addresses automatically, from the Airport Express. This is the way Windows (and Macs for that matter) are configued by default, and that is the way most people have their computers set up. If you manually configured your PC's IP address to be the same as your wife's Mac, it certainly explains why your PC is not able to access the internet.

  • I have an ipod and an iphone 3GS and a wireless LAN device, with my ipod I have a connection, but not with my iphone ... why is that?

I have an ipod and an iphone 3GS and a wireless LAN device, with my ipod I have a connection, but not with my iphone ... why is that?

    - An iPod can only sync with one iTunes library. Yu can however manage music and videos among different computers by:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
    - To change syncing computer, move all the media to compute r#2
    - Connect the iPod to #2 and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup
Note tha the iPod backup the iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music.

  • Mac Address Filtering Issue with DI-624 router and HP D110 Wireless Printer

Just got the D110 Wireless Printer and cannot connect to the wireless router.
    I have a D-Link DI-624 Air Plus Xtreme G 2.4GHz Wireless Router.
The error message that I'm recieving from the printer is that "Mac address filtering may be enabled on your wireless router. This  can prevent your HP printer from connecting to your wireless network during setup....etc."
The D-Link is setup using WPA-PSK security. If I turn off all security than the wireless printer is able to connect. With WPA-PSK or even WEP enabled I cannot connect the printer to the wireless router. There is no connection to hardwire the printer and the router.
I've logged on to the router's admin and have confirmed several times that Mac filtering is turned off by going to Advanced > Filters > Mac Filters > and choosing Disabled Mac Filters. Where else is this setting? Why is the printer not able to connect?
Further, I check the logs on the router and it shows "Wireless PC Connected" and "Authentication Success" with a note that has the Mac Hardware Address matching the printer's mac hardware address on the Wireless Network Test Report. It would appear that the router is letting the Print in but that the printer is not able to communicate for some reason. It even shows under status > wireless that the printer is connected.
When i spoke to HP, they said to contact the router company and that they could not help. When I called D-Link they said tech support is no longer available for the model. I'm stuck, can anybody help?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Windows XP, tried both the front of the printer as well as connecting via USB and using the software.
After a few hours on the phone with both D-Link and HP, the issue has been resolved.
Apparently eventhough Mac Filtering was disabled (set to Disabled MAC Filters), the Mac address had to be entered into the router to allow it while keeping the setting to Disabled Mac Filters. To me it appeared counter intuitive to enter the Mac address while it's set to Disabled Mac Filters so I did not try that before getting on the phone with HP. Further on this, the problem did not go away right after adding the mac address but rather after restarting the router as the mac address addition did not take effect without a reboot of the device.
HP was much more helpful than D-Link on this one though it would be nice for HP to add to their instructions and Wireless Network Test Report to add the Mac address just in case. I would have tried that step if it was stated that it's okay to add the mac address and keep mac filters disabled.
