Wireless internet disconnect problem in a network

We just set up a Roku Soundbridge so we can access both my music library & my husband's PC-based music library. We're connected through a wireless router that we don't have problems with. The challenge is that we both have our music on laptops, and I can't connect to my music if my laptop is closed.
I've already set it to never sleep, but my Airport disconnects when I flip down the screen (his PC stays connected...). I've looked at all of the Airport settings, all of my energy saver settings, sharing settings, anything I could brainstorm to be relevant via Mac Help & as much as I could stand to look through here. I've even tried to access my router's Admin settings, but I'm pretty sure it's my computer and not the router that's being the hassle.
What can I do to keep that access to my iTunes available?

Well...your computer has to be on and connected to your home network to share files.
When you close it....your computer assumes that you want to shut things down for a while...so it disconnects from the network and probably powers off the airport card.
Your husband's PC must have a configuration for closing the top and the computer is still active. (NOT ASLEEP)
There might be a setting or patch for keeping your Mac "Awake" when you close the lid, but I think you will have to leave the top open.

  • IMAC Wireless Internet Connection Problems All Of A Sudden

My Imac is well over a year and a bit old and has been able to connect to my wireless internet connection absolutely fine until the past week and a half. At first the connection wouldn't work and when I would turn my airport on and off and reset the router, it would eventually work, now that is not working at all. My airport status is either showing 'airport is turned on but is not connected to a network' or 'airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet'
I have formatted my imac twice and still no avail and the last format I tried to join wirelessly straight from boot but it wouldn't join saying 'there is a problem with the wireless connection and you're not connected to the internet.' the annoying thing is I can see the network sitting there and can't join it, my network is also unsecure so no need to input a password. All my home PC's and my Iphone and Blackberry find the network easily enough, although recently the Iphone has began showing only 1 bar of wifi connection.
I am at my wits end as I am unable to connect at all now, I am all out of ideas and have been bashing my head off a wall for the past day without any connection at all.
My router is a buffalo AirStation wireless G high power model, my IMAC is an intel core 2 duo 20", if you need anymore information of my hardware I will gladly provide it. I'm running MAC OSX Leopard 10.5, out the box as I've been unable to run any software updates as I can't connect to the internet.
Please, if anyone can shed any light at all on this issue I would definately try anything.
    Thanks in advance and regards.

Anytime you see a self-assigned IP address in your network prefs you know it surely is a problem
with your router configuration. Power down all equip ... make sure modem is off for at least 5 minutes
restart modem, restart iMac ... check your network pref on iMac and make sure it's not 169.x.x.x
If so you will need to recapture the settings from your ISP's modem to the Buffalo.
Always use a secure wireless connection (WEP, WPA, WPA2) or else the whole neighborhood will suck down your bandwidth the slow down what your paying for. I use Time Capsules or AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Stations) that allow you to stealth mode and lower signal output and make the device
as a "closed network" ... meaning no one else can see and tap into your WIFI home network!
802.11N is better than G. and especially when you can use dual bands 2.4 / 5GHz to stop various home interferences. The backup of Time Machine only makes life much easier also! Xtech

  • [SOLVED] Wireless internet connection problem during installation

    Hi to everyone!
I ask you a help in activating my wireless connection.
I tried to install from the recent ISO (201208 - via CD)
but I found some problems in activating a wireless connection in the first steps
    of the installation guide.
My laptop is a Hp pavilion dv5 1020-el, with an Intel wireless 5100AGN internal interface.
    So I did:
    1) iwconfig to see my devices and the system detects my wlan0.
    2) followed the Wireless_Setup page from wiki to set it
    3) used wpa_supplicant and passphrase to set my ESSID name and wpa key.
    4) iwconfig then showed wlan0 associated with my ESSID, with Power ON and Encryption OFF.
I could not try a connection via ping command.
    Even wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf did not work.
Maybe the problem is with Encryption OFF.
    Thanks for your attention!
    EDIT:
I solved this way, connecting to an open wireless open  network:
    1.(from boot) I created a profile in /etc/network.d/ from /etc/network.d/examples
    2. started a # netcfg 'my_ESSID'
    3. # ping -c 3 www.google.com
All is ok! I can install Arch Linux from my smartphone as a router.
But I couldn't connect to a WPA protected wireless network yet.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question. The company who provides the wireless internet service to my apartment complex moved the antenna next to my unit and claims he boosted the power. As the saying goes, "The squeaky wheel gets the grease". I complained almost daily to the apartment manager and she, in turn, griped to the provider which eventually led to the "solution" above. Using Skype is still shaky as the person I'm calling isn't always able to make out what I am saying. So, I use Skype only when I REALLY need to make a phone call. Even though none of your suggestions solved my problem, I am still very, very grateful to all of you who tried. Thank you very, very much! -- Matt

  • Internet Disconnection Problem

Hi Everyone, I have a windows Vista PC, which uses a Netgear WN111 USB Adaptor to connect to my wireless network. The issue i seem to have is when i dock my iphone to sync/charge my internet works fine. But as soom as I eject it through itunes and pull it out of the dock/disconnect cable the internet disconnects!!
I have no idea what is causing this but i end up having to restart my PC everytime i disconnect my iphone!
    Any suggestions....

    Desktop or laptop?
If a Desktop, is your USB wireless adaptor connected to a higher powered USB port which are located in the back of the computer and the same for your iPhone when connected? The USB ports on the front are usually lower powered USB ports to be used for a device such as a keyboard and mouse.

Hi there Bananaman, you are one of those wonderful volunteers out there, anyway, as I have said purchased machine on 06 worked for at least year and a half then quit on me. I cannot access the internet, took it to office depot since I purchsed it from them, they're offering FREE tune up had me purchase a Linksys LAN card telling me the built in wireless netcard had given up on me. Did not help, they sent me home w/ the LAN card assuring me it will work since in my house I have a wide range of wireless internet connection whatever. Did not work either. Called IBM Lenovo only to be declined of tech support because machine not warranty covered. Yesterday, I tried to fix it(LOL) for a miracle to struck me but to my despair. I don't know what to do, I want to take it to service center recommended by IBM but got no green. I am hopeful that, being a member of the Lenovo community, I could find some real help from real people like you. These are the characters I see at the back of my machine I think as the product number, (TYPE  2511 - FEU  S/N  *******   0510) Thank you.

  • Wireless internet connection problems

Hi there,I'm from Holland so if my sentences come off weird, you know why... I got aquestion about wireless connections in the big city. I live in a fairly bigcity and my connection is failing at least 10 times a day... My provider toldme this might be because of the fact that i can receive a ton of signals (otherwireless network). Now, i don't buy that so im looking for a solution. Incomparison, i don't believe people in large cities in the US have theseproblems and some of them harbor more citizens than my entire country does...So i wanted to ask: I have this internet package (check out the specs if you will) is there something else that yourproviders offer and by that, overcome the frequency overload... modem differenttype of modems or something like that...? please help! thnx in advance!

I don't know if this is going to help anyone or not, but I was having a similar issue to many of the users on these discussion boards. My wireless was connecting and then dropping from 5 to 3 bars, then I would lose connection entirely for about a minute, then it would reconnect and work fine for 5 minutes etc. Sometimes, my airport would work great the whole time.
Anyway, I called applecare support and followed their various suggestions, to no avail. The IT guys at work couldn't figure it out either.
Fortunately for me, my computer was purchased through an academic institution, so I have onsite hardware and software support. With this being said, the hardware technician at work determined that the wire connecting my airport was lose. Since the airport is located at the bottom of the macbook near the hinge, the technician suggested that opening an closing the screen would affect how well the airport was connected given the lose wire.
With the lose wire problem taken care of, I don't seem to have these problems anymore. Also, before the problem was fixed I needed to be within about 20 feet of my router to get a good signal, and now I can pretty much go anywhere in my house and it works great.
    Something to look into.

  • Wireless internet disconnected when upgrade to itunes 8.1

Did anybody know why my wireless connected was disabled when I upgrade the itunes to 8.1. It totally remove my wireless connection from my computer. I have window xp sp3. Thanks,

I am having the same problem. I restarted my computer, router and modem a bunch of times and nothing worked. In a separate discussion "Topic : After upgrade 8.1 Itunes can't connect to Internet", they say it has to do with firewall software, particularly Norton or Symantec. It is recommended to remove the program using the Norton Removal Tool. However, my Dell came with McAfee and I looked on my list of programs and Norton is not listed. iTunes has full access to the internet in my McAfee firewall so I do not know what else to do. Anyone able to help?

  • For those who constantly lose their wireless internet connection using WRT54G

Ok I was constantly losing my wireless internet connection on my LAN network when using my laptop, I tried everything to no avail, until today. Heres what I did to solve my problem
    1. Upgrade your firmware for the WRT54G to ver.6
    2. Reset your wireless router
    3. Unplug all cables and wires from your Pc and router
    4. Connect your Pc directly to your cable modem and obtain an internet connection
    5. Now transfer files you want to keep from your laptop onto a usb flash drive or burn them to a disk
    6. Reformat your laptop so that it goes back to all factory settings just like when you bought it
    7. When completely done reformatting run software that came with the WRT54G on your desktop pc and follow all instructions, when prompted to type password type the password you last used
    8. Go to your laptop and it should pickup a LAN,click connect, it will ask for the encryption key so type it in(whatever you typed when re-installing your wireless router)
Congratulations you are now back up and running, install files saved earlier back on your laptop and enjoy. This is what I did and it solved my problem as a matter of fact i typed this from my laptop and has not dropped my wireless internet connection yet.
NOTE SAVE ANY AND ALL FILES YOU WANT TO KEEP AS REFORMATTING WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE DATA!
IAM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ERRORS OR PROBLEMS THIS PROCEDURE COULD CAUSE IF DONE INCORRECTLY!

If you bought a version 5 or 6 return it to where you bought and apply the money towards a WRT54GL v1.x  You'll be much happier.  You could spend time online rather than pulling your hair out trying to figure out whats wrong.  I setup 6 Linux based WRT54G's with no issues before I was given the task of setting up a version 6.  Worked for about an hour.  Told the guy to return it for a GL.  Long story short, set it up in a matter of minutes and he was online.  That was 3 weeks ago and he is very happy.

  • I'm on a DD-WRT wireless internet service. Could this be causing my iMac to act weird ?

I'm on a DD-WRT wireless internet service. Could this network be causing my iMac to act weird ?

From reading this site and others, looks as if there could be thousands of possiblities/remedies.
I agree. Aside from the very remote possibility that running Java for that "trusted" website allowed some kind of infection--and if it was some kind of exploit, I doubt it would manifest itself in any way you'd notice--there are just too many different things going on for me to give any help.
Why were you thinking it was the router/DD-WRT? What if you connect directly by Ethernet?
    Some generic thrings to try.
See if a Safe Boot helps. Shift at the startup chime and give it much longer to boot than normal. Don't open anything, leave it a minute or two and then restart normally.
    SMC reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
You could try the shotgun approach and reinstall, but first you must be certain to have a completely reliable backup, in case you need to restore.

  • My iMac is not staying connected to my wireless internet. Any suggestions?  My provider says it's a computer issue and not their problem.

My iMac is not staying connected to the wireless internet.  My provider tells me it's a computer issue and not their problems.  Any suggestions?

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 5
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 6
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 7
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    Step 8
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • RG54G2 Wireless Router Internet Connection Problem

    Hi,
(apologies for the long message - trying to cover all details - summary: wireless router often drops internet connection)
I recently bought an RG54G2 Wireless Router, a CB54G2 PCMCIA Wireless card and a D-Link GWL-630 PCMCIA Wireless card.  In addition to two laptops connected to the wireless router WLAN, I have two PCs (one Win WP Pro SP 1 and one Win98SE) connected to the router via wired LAN.  I also have a SurfBoard SB3100 Cable Modem connected to the WAN port (this connects to my ISP -  Optusnet (Australia) via DHCP).
The problem I have is that the internet connection is disconnected many times a day (often every few minutes, sometimes an hour or so).  I am able to reconnect by resetting the wireless router via the wireless router configuration page.  When the internet is disconnected I am still able to access the computers on the LAN/WLAN (via Windows Explorer and Ping), I am also able to ping the router and the Cable Modem, but nothing outside of the cable modem.
Also, when the internet is disconnected the System Status page indicates that the router is still connected to the internet, and the Diagnostics page passes the Test Connection test, though no external pings work.
I did not have this problem when the cable modem was connected directly to the Win98SE PC (and other PCs via ICS).
I have disabled the WLAN and the problem still exists with only the wired LAN.
I have changed numerous settings in the wireless router config page with no success (eg disabling DHCP and setting each IP address, minimising LAN and WLAN speeds to 10 and 11MBps plus others).
I have upgraded the wireless router firmware to R1.0.6.0 (no change to the problem).
Searching on Google I have found several other cases of routers with unstable internet connections (none refering to the MSI routers), but none had solutions that helped my situation (most replies suggested updating the firmware).
Any suggestions of how to make the router internet connection stable?
    Thanks,
    Mike

maybe this is the FIX 4 wireles router internet connection problem
please let me know if any one fix the problem with this tips
    thankz

Subject: SOLUTION to my router loosing connection to Windows XP
Reply | Reply to Author | Forward | Print | Individual Message | Show original | Report Abuse
I am happy to report that after 8 days of constant battles, reboots, phone
calls, cable pulling, router changing, it seems that I finally have found a
combination that has had me using Verizon DSL account for over 12 hours so
far without any kind of interruptions.
Since so many of you tried giving me comments and suggestions, I felt that
it is necessary for me to post this here so that the next person will not
(hopefully) need to go through this hell as I did!
My original problem was that when after I purchased a D-Link Wireless Router
DI-624, I would get disconnected from Verizon DSL at least once every 2
hours or so. My internet access would "freeze" and then a little popup box
at the bottom right system tray would tell me that the "LAN cable has been
unplugged".   After about a minute or so, my internet connection would be
back working   This was NEVER happening during the 2+ years I was using my
Westell modem alone (running in router mode).
Please keep in mind: The problem I was having was not wireless related as
it was happening to the desktop computer to which the router/westell was
    connected to!
During these last 8 days, I tried: one DI-624 wireless router, two Netgear
614v3 routers and two Linksys WRT54G v.2 routers. In addition, I received a
brand new Westell 2200 modem from Verizon.   I also tried about four
different CAT-5 cables. Here is the final outcome:
I have the Linksys WRT54G (version 2) wireless router connected to the
Netgear Fast Ethernet FA310TX network card in Auto-Sense mode (using the
built-in XP drivers, as Netgear told me that there was never a newer
revision released). I have DISABLED the built-in 3Com Gigabit LOM (3C940)
network card (via the ASUS P4C800 Deluxe motherboard BIOS), DISABLED the
Zero Wireless Configuration service, and have put in the IP/Gateway/DNS
address numbers inside my Windows XP Network Connections | LAN setup. My
operating system is Windows XP Pro SP1 and the modem is a Westell 2200
    configured as bridge only.
If my situation continues to be stable, I *might* try to go back to the 3Com
built-in card (disable any power management) and then re-enabling the Zero
Wireless Configuration services. But in reality, I am happy with the way
things are and have already spent enough time trying to get my router to
work with Verizon DSL without having it drop connections!
Now, the next step will be setting up the WIRELESS part of this. I don't
even yet have a laptop with me on the premises, but the 802.11g card that I
already have is the D-Link DWL-G650. I hope and assume that this will work
    okay with the Linksys...
One thing I must say is that I never realized that how many problems other
users are having. I would have thought that since 802.11x has been around
in the mainstream by now 2+ years, that things would have been much more
"system friendlier".   And again, my issues were not even WIRELESS related.
All 3 tech supports were not really helpful, as none of them realized that
the problem is somehow between the router and Windows XP (Ethernet card?)
loosing a connection, which of course results in Verizon DSL loosing the
    connection also.
One other comment about the Netgear 614 v.3 router: A number of people have
responded to tell me that they have had this random "router resetting"
happen to them (where the routers behaves as if someone turned the power off
and then back on, and the lights flash) just as if you first turn it on). I
was lucky to witness it myself during one of the "disconnects" that I had.
This was actually the reason why I went back to try the Linksys one more
time. So, I would definitely recommend staying way from this 614 (version
    3) model.
Once again - THANK YOU everyone!

Hello, my sister her macbook pro cannot connect to our wireless internet. My imac however can, so the problem has to do with her laptop. We were wondering how we could solve this problem? Thank you very much in advance!

We did that, but it just doesn't seem to be able to connect. So basically we tried to connect to our network and insert the password, but afterwards it does nothing. Weird thing is also that the network symbol (top right of the screen) says that it has been connected, but when I go look at the system preferences --> network, it states that it has not been connected

  • MBP problem connecting to wireless internet

I recently tried to get online using my Macbook Pro (Intel) and I was prompted for the password to access the wireless internet network which was unusual as it normally connected automatically every time. Once I had entered the correct password I was met with the pop up window "'There was an error connecting to the network 'Vlsise'" (Vlsise is the name of our home network). I think that this may have been due to recently downloading some updates the day before but I can't be sure.
I have an iMac (Intel) and PlayStation 3 which connect fine to the internet wirelessly but I've not gotten around to downloading the latest updates for the iMac in fear of it encountering the same problem as my MBP.
My laptop can connect via the ethernet cable but when I try to connect wirelessly I briefly see the IP Address 169.254.109.180 in the network settings window before the error message appears, if that is of any use.
The router I'm using is a 'Zyxel 660HW-T3' and has been great for the year that I've had it. It may also be worth pointing out that our provider 'Telefonica O2' upgraded our service last month but as the MBP is the only Mac that has a problem I can't really see this being related.
If anyone has a solution to my problem or any tips to try rectify the problem they would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

So I took my MBP to work to try their WPA2 password protected network and it connected no problem! I'm absolutely stumped on this one I think my last resort will be to re-install OSX and see if that works. If someone else has already tried this and it didn't work then please inform me so that I can save myself the hassle.

I am having trouble connecting to my wireless internet and am getting the message that my network configuration settings have changed. I have reported it to my provider who advised that they think the Mac is looking for a fixed IP address and they use dynamic addresses. I have had the Mac for months and have not had this problem before. I would appreciate any help please on how to fix this ?

Then I get a separate pop up that says: Secure Connection Failed. aus3.mozilla:443 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for the following names: securelogin.arubanetworks.com, www.securelogin.arubanetworks.com
    (Error code: ssl_error_cert_domain)
This could be a problem with the server's configuration or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
If you have connected to this server successfully in the past the error may be temporary and you can try again later.
I have tried many many times!
