Wireless Laptop Card

Hi All,
I was recently given (for free) a Satellite Pro 4200 Series Laptop. Unfortunately, I've been told that I need to purchase a Wireless Laptop Card in order to connect to the internet. When I went to purchase the card I was told that I should find out first if my laptop is compatible with wireless laptop cards. I tried looking for an e-mail address from Toshiba Tech Service but I couldn't find one. I stumbled upon this messageboard and decided to ask here.
What I'm wondering is:
Is the Satellite Pro 4300 Series compatible with Wireless Laptop Cards
and
What brand is it compatible with? Belkin, D-Link etc.?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help me with this.

Becky,
The issue is not so much brand but technology.  That is a ... shall we say 'vintage' machine and the means of adding accessories to laptops has moved on, so to speak.  The easiest way to connect that model to the internet would be a LAN card rather than a wireless card.  The detailed specs list a 3Com 10/100 Ethernet Cardbus card (part number 3CXFE575CT) as an accessory.  Unfortunately, those items have been discontinued as the PC Card technology has evolved.  It may still be possible to find a used part on eBay, Craig's List or at other online parts sources.  The good news is that if you find one, it won't be very expensive.   Another possibility would be a USB LAN or wireless card but the problem I fear you'll encounter is with device drivers.  That system shipped with either Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and drivers for those operating systems would be a problem for current hardware.  Toshiba doesn't have email support, only their 800 number but I have a suspicion that they wouldn't be too much help to you in this case.  You could possibly chat with a Premier Authorized Service Provider (click the 'repair' link above to see if there is one close to you) and see what they say but I would discourage spending much money on the situation.

  • Equium L10 doesn't recognise any wireless PCMCIA card that I install

    Hi,
I've just bought a brand new Toshiba Equium L10 and I can't get any wireless card to install. I have tried different models from Belkin, Netgear and MSI, all of which work perfectly fine on other laptops but not on this one.
The L10 is a clean Windows XP SP2 build straight from the retailer and I am carrying out the following steps to install the wireless network card:
    1. Start Windows XP SP2 and log on as admin
    2. Run software for the wireless card
    3. Insert wireless card
At this stage, windows only recognises the wireless card as an ethernet adaptor and won't install the drivers. Even if I install it manually and point it specifically to the correct directory, it still fails to pick up the drivers and says that there is nothing in the directory for the hardware that I am installing.
I have the latest BIOS for the L10 and have tried all of the following to no avail:
    1. Disable USB legacy support in BIOS
    2. Disable built in ethernet
    3. Run Toshiba PC Diagnostics (reports that everything is working just fine including PCMCIA)
    4. Rebuild laptop using supplied Toshiba DVD
Does anyone have any idea what could possibly be wrong? This is driving me crazy and I've never had this kind of issue with any other laptop. Is this a known fault with Toshiba laptops and what's the fix?
Is it a Win XP SP2 problem? Is my laptop faulty?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    K.

Can you post the details of this card?
Did you contact the PCMCIA card manufacture for support? Maybe there is a new driver release for this card.
I have noticed some problems with a Vodafone PCMICA card on a Satellite P10. This card has caused a blue screen on the unit. Well, the disabling of hyper threading technology in the BIOS has solved this issue. On another cards the new driver release has also solved some strange problems.
However, what I would say is there are many things which could have a bad influence.
Firstly I would recommend to ask the card manufacture for a support.

  • PCI Card Slot - Wireless LAN Card Problems - Help!

    Help.
I'm having problems getting my board to recognize both:
Linksys WMP11 Wireless LAN card; and
    Netgear WG311T Wireless LAN card
(returned the Linksys card, but the Netgear card had the same problem).
Neither card is being picked up by Windows (XP Home), although both the "power" and "link" LED lights up when inserted.  I've tried every PCI slot, same issue.  Nothing shows up in the device manager, and no new hardware is detected.  The Netgear software tells me that the card has not been installed.
Am left thinking I need to RMA the board.  Any suggestions woudl be much appreciated.

My roommate has a similar setup as you and I am having the same problem getting a pci wifi card to work in the machine.  I have tried both a Linksys WMP54G and a Netgear WG311. Both cards will scan for networks bit will never connect my router (Linksys WRT54G). Just to get them to recognise the network, I have to turn off WEP, and turn on ESSID broadcast.  Both of these cards work prefect in other computers. I know it not a signal problem because I can take my laptop and set it in the same location and it gets excellent signal.
I have tried changing slots in the machine, the wifi cards were the only PCI cards in the machine and an GeForce 6800 GT in the AGP slot. I have no idea what the problem could be. But I'm leaning towards the mobo at this point.

  • Disable the wireless network card upon connection.

Has anyone done the following, if so can you provide some insite on how to do it and how well it works....If wireless networking is not being used in the organization, it is possible for CSA to disable
the wireless network card when it is connected to the corporate network. I'm assuming by using the system
state variable with the rule, you can allow laptop users the ability to use wireless when they are
not connected to the corporate network.

I dont' see a system state "ethernet active" do I create this? I'm on CSA version 5.1.0.103. I have a system state called network which has the description of All users who are logged on via a network connection. Is that the same thing you mean? Then how do I create the rule? I get to where I have a NAC rule but I'm not for sure what to choose after that.

  • Wireless Router WRT160N wired to desktop, I loose internet when wireless laptop is off.

I have the wrt160n v2 wireless router, it does not work for me.
If my XP wireless laptop is only powered ON the Vista desktop internet wired will work, I am not wired or wireless using the laptop, not in internet, only powered on.
If the laptop is off I have no internet on the desktop, still plugged thru the router.
The laptop is used and I was unsure if the built in wireless was new enough so I bought a card to go in it for wireless.
When everything is on all is well for playing on the internet times two computers, but if you turn off the laptop I have to plug the internet directly into the desktop to continue in the internet.
I started to work with tech support yesterday and they are hard to understand. I did bring in the newest firmware and still have the problems.
Can anybody help me, I really don't have the time to be on the phone for hours figuring this all out.
    Thanks

  • How and where do I install a wireless internet card in G3 PowerBook?

I own a G3 PowerBook "Pismo", Firewire, M7572. Not being familiar with working with the internals of a laptop, how and where does one install wireless internet card? Any help would be appreciated

The G3 Powerbook "Pismo" takes an original Apple Airport Card, and NOT the extreme card. The original airport card is available here:

  • Windows xp on te2000 cant detect wireless lan card

I have a te2000 laptop the wireless lan card is detected as PCMCIA MTD-0002.
I downloaded the drivers but even after I install windows wont use it. I get error code 10.
How do I make it work ?
The wireless port is enabled but it has an orange light (not green) any ideas why ?
    Thanks in advance
    Ken.

    Thnks Joao for the response.
I downloaded the drivers here but even if I install them Windows doesnt let me use it and there is the yellow question mark in device manger & status is T'his device cannot start. (Code 10)'
If I remove the driver and let windows search for it manually it doesnt get it, so it installs it as pcmcia-mtd-0002.
How do I tell if it's Orinoco or not ?
At the bottom the wireless lan has a number 00022d 366fed if that is any help.
Notice hot the timestamps on this board are off :)

  • Those usb wireless internet card things ...?

My father's been pushing me to find a more budget friendly alternative to our current internet situation. We're connected with a DSL modem, it's not wireless.
He's been asking me about the usb wireless internet cards that he's seen on TV, like the ones that AT&T promote in their "find the internet everywhere" commercials.
Now, I'm finding that the service for these cards is more expensive then what we're paying now, so we probably won't be purchasing this sort of service any time soon, but I am confused as to what exactly it is.
I'm assuming that if I had one of these cards that I could get rid of the box that's connected to the wall (the modem that I connect my computer to to get the internet). But as I'm researching this I'm finding that there are "wireless internet cards" cards that allow older computers to connect to wireless modems (something that my computer can do... that most new computers can do). I would think that these wireless internet cards are different from the wireless internet devices that I'm looking for. (but maybe they're not?) I'm really confused.
If anyone could shed some light on these cards I'd be grateful Thank you!

The wireless internet cards are different. They, for all practical purposes, are a cellphone of sorts that you attach to your computer and then it dials into the network (AT&T's, Verizon's, Sprint, etc.) and provides you with internet service just like a cellphone gives you phone service. They work just about anywhere again just like a cellphone.
AT&T's Laptop Connect cards seem to be primarily in the ExpressCard form factor, which Apple only supports in the MacBook Pro right now. They also have the older PC Cards that might work with older Apple notebooks (I think). Then there's the USB version.

This seems to be designed for business customers. I couldn't find anything suggesting that this is made available to the regular consumer market.

  • Compaq C762nr wireless network card upgrade

I would like to replace the Atheros AR5007 wireless network card in my laptop with a compatible wireless-n card.  Which cards are compatible?  Thanks

The Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN mini PCIE module is compatible. The driver is available at the web support portal for your notebook.
Upon further research it appears that a different antenna setup is required for the Intel wifi Link 3945AGN module. It would require disassembling the display assembly and installing a different antenna setup.
The C700 series notebook is, unless modified only compatible with 802.11 A/B/G wireless adapters.
A simpler method to upgrade would be to use a USB wireless adapter with 802.11N capability. the C700 series notebook does not have ExpressCard nor PCMIA slots available to use for an alternative upgrade method.

  • DV6 wireless network card upgrade ?

I just bought a DV6 LM199UA#ABC and i was wondering if the wireless network card could be upgraded and if so, could I puchase it from HP?

Which card do you have? HP laptops will ony work with very specific wireless cards. There is a "whitelist" in the BIOS which means you must use a card that was offered on the laptop when new or the laptop will refuse to boot. So to see what you can use we need your specific model and the type of card in the laptop already to see if there is anything better available.

  • Wireless Network Card

When i bought my K8N NEO2 Plat. it came with the wireless network card bundled with it, ever since i have started using it i have had nothing but problems with it, it keeps dropping the connection every 10 mins or so and also does it when using or exiting a program which makes online gaming almost impossible, does anyone know what could be wrong.
BTW i am connecting to a another computer, i also have a laptop that uses another wireless access point and that never drops the connection

    I have the same problem.
What I have realized is that moveing the antenna just a little bit helps a lot on the signal strength. I had my antenna on of my cabinet with LOW to VERY LOW signal. Moved the antenna to the floor, got GOOD to VERY GOOD signal.
However I have to say that the Wireless card that is included with the NEO 2 is a 2nd hand solution. I have tried with other PCI based Wireless cards. No problem with either the driver or the singal strength. So the conclusion must be that if you can afford it, buy a new Wireless card.
Infact both the onbaord audio and the Wireless solution on the NEO 2 is really of rahter poor quality. In my opinion MSI should never have included em in the package.

  • New router install crashes wireless laptop

I just installed a WRT54G2 router today. The PC that the router is installed on is fine and can access the internet, but when I powered up my laptop to use wi-fi on it to access the internet, the laptop will not come up to the desktop. It stops with a long error message and says a problem has been encountered and Windows has been shut down. If I unplug the power cord for the router, the laptop comes up fine but says that a "serious problem" was encountered but corrected. If I bring up the laptop with the router powered off, the laptop comes up fine but as soon as I power on the router, the laptop crashes with the same error message as above. (??!!) Any ideas?

This is not the router, but instead a bad device driver in your pc. If you have an internal wifi card go to device settings and remove it then reboot your pc and it will reload to original settings.
If you installed a wireless linksys card remove the card and its drivers, reboot and reinstall.

  • Multiple PC's & one Sierra Wireless USB Card

? Can I use the one Next G Sierra Wireless USB card on my desktop PC and then take it away for use on the laptop when travelling.  It asks me to "register" it when I plugged it into the laptop but it was registered to my PC.  I do not want to sign up for another USB wireless device.

Hey Rowan, If you have the 'activation has not been completed' message follow these steps to resolve- - While holding shift, press the option button (the cogs)- a tab will become available called 'diagnosis'-click this tab and find the tick box that says "sign up has been completed for this device"-check the box and click apply and then OK.-hit the connect button and you should be away. The only additional thing you may need to do if its a bigpond service is input your bigpond email address and password into the account tab in the same options area to get it to connect properly. apart from that there shouldnt be a problem. Hope that helps

  • Wireless laptops in the domain disconnect and try to re-authenticate

    Hi,
I have a wireless setup that is using WLSM in a 6500 switch which is also acting as WDS.
The problem that am encountering is that wireless laptops that are not in the domain are working
perfectly without any issues, they can roam without dropping the wireless LAN connection while
laptops that are joined in the domain are dropping the wireless connection and get stuck while trying
    to re-authenticate.
Your help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sidi

    Sidi,
Just a stab in the dark here, but maybe your group policies are effecting your laptops local firewall and blocking something on the WiFi card which cuases them to get bumped off the WiFi.
Connect those laptops hard wired to the domainand force an update using gpupdate /force, after all is done and logged out with group policy, then try the WiFi connection again.
    Hope this helps...
