Wireless router that plays well with Apple Airport Express

Trying to find a router (with vpn and WDS- guaranteed) so that it will allow connection to apple wireless base stations and express units. Not all routers will, and many have misleading info on sites and boxes. Many routers seem to have very weak signals when connecting to Apple airport cards in apple laptops.
Anyone have any ideas.
I would like to see one that comes with DUAL WAN's and load balancing, or a way to connect such hardware together.

Hello All,
I had a very simple need, I wanted to keep my Linksys wireless router, WRT54G, not use 3rd party software and use the AirPort Express to send my Itunes Music from from PC that did not have wifi on it thru the network to a remote back rook of my house....after looking at tons of alternatives it was a really simple fix....
1. Load the software from apple that comes with the APExpress
2. When the wizard starts let it find your Airport....then choose manual set up...
3. Go to Tab Internet Connection
4. Look at the IP address listed...mine was 192.168.1.101
5. Go to the Linksys set up page
6. Applications & Gaming
7. Port Range Forward, List the word Apple- then open port 548 to 548 and then enable the IP that you saw in the IP listed in the Apple configuration window..Step 4 above
 Perfect....wonderful....

  • Cheap wireless router that plays nice with macs??

    Greetings:
I have the older cone-shaped airport extreme base station...
it's working fine & I'm very happy with it.
    My situation is this....
Periodically I go thru times of network degradation when I pull my hair out trying to ascertain if the issue is my ISP mothership, my cable modem, the airport extreme base station, or any of the myriad of links in the chain along the way.
It's struck me on more than one occasion that it sure would be handy if I had *another wireless router on the shelf that I could grab & go with.
At issue, however are several matters:
--the fact that many other routers don't play nice with macs
--the fact that I **need to do WEP security (it seems to be being dropped by a lot of newer routers).......but my TIVO won't do WPA & also I still have 2 older imacs on my home wireless network.
I would LOVE to hear a recommendation of something cheap & locally plentiful (like at the local best buy) that still does WEP & will play nice with macs.
    Thanks for your help.

You have the option to configure both your AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express to "participate in a WDS network, so the Express will connect to the AiirPort Extreme using wireless only and then "extend" the reach of the wireless network.
Or, connect the Express to the Extreme using an Ethernet cable and configure it to "create a wireless nework", which will also provide more wireless coverage.....with greater bandwidth because you are connecting routers together using Ethernet, not wireless.
The following Apple document will give  you all the options:

Yes, it is one of the things AirPort Express was specifically designed for.

  • Does Time Capsule play well with older Airport devices?

Hello.  Today I am likely coming home with a Time Capsule and intend to rebuild my home wireless network.
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on the value/worth of attempting to connect older airport devices to the new network? I have a VERY old (1st gen?) Express, a 2nd or 3rd Express, and an Airport Extreme which, here on my lunch break away from home, I'm frankly not sure which age it is. I have been using the Extreme as the Base Station and intend to wipe it and set up the TC as the Base Station.
There are a few areas of our house that don't get good signals currently. If they STILL don't, should I try to connect any of these older devices as extenders? Or will they not play well with the TC because of their different letters (g/n/etc.?)
Thanks in advance. We'd been planning on getting a TC for a long while but found out this week that our Extreme is somehow getting in the way of our network connection... So I'm hoping that a brand new set-up will improve our speed and entire system. We have a household of many devices--one iMac and more than four iOS devices (potentially depending on who's awake) running on a 60Mbp/4 upload system. For a long time we've had internet but at 23-26 Mbp tops.
Any of your thoughts or ideas would be welcome.

Old G wireless express should be retired.. it will not work well in the current network. Although people do use them just for audio use.. the later OS have ceased to be able to set them up. G extreme is of no use.
You can use anything that is N wireless.. but you need to be sane and rational about using a router that is 3-6years old.. as it might cause as much problems as it fixes. Certainly there is nothing wrong with having a go.. as long as you are not too hopeful.
The best way to get wireless in a dark corner is to run ethernet over to that area.. and run a wireless AP there. Your N apple airport can function as AP. Even using EOP (ethernet over power) can sometimes work.
If you try to extend wireless wireless to the dark zone.. you cannot place the AP in the dark zone.. as it will get no signal to extend.. it needs to be able to pick up good signal and still have sufficient range to reach the end of your zone. That suggests if it doesn't work now.. it won't work in this new role either.. but no skin off having a try.

  • How to set up a Time Capsule to extend a non-Apple router and play tunes to an Airport Express?

I have an older Time capsule that I would like to give my sister in order to extend her CenturyLink wifi.  I can connect via ethernet but she would like to play music thru an Airport Express at the stereo system.
My question is:  would it be better to extend the existing wi-fi network (to the upstairs part of the house) OR set up a new Apple network with the Time Capsule linked to the Airport Express.  This is the way I currently have my own network....in a smaller house.

I have an older Time capsule that I would like to give my sister in order to extend her CenturyLink wifi
The Time Capsule is not compatible with a CenturyLink device if you plan to "extend" using wireless only.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the CenturyLink modem/router using an Ethernet cable. Then, configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network".
The AirPort Express could then be used for AirTunes by receiving the signal from the Time Capsule.
If the AIrPort Express is a newer 802.11n version, then it could also be configured to "extend" the wireless signal of the Time Capsule to provide more wireless coverage, in addition to use for AirTunes.
If you plan to keep the wireless on for the CenturyLink gateway, make sure that the Time Capsule is separated by at least 6-7 feet to help minimize the chances of wireless interference between two routers.

  • Need to buy a wireless router that is compatible with 10.4.11 and macbook pro, and pc. Current Airport Extreme not a compatible option. Please help with suggestions.

Any mid range options would be helpful. Thank your.

You can set up and administer the Airport Extreme from any computer, Mac or PC. The only requirement is the version of Airport Utility appropriate for the OS, in order to accomplish its initial configuration. For Tiger, it's the one I linked.
Apparently the "chat" participant simply read from Apple's web page. Anyone can do that
Client operating systems are meaningless to the Airport itself (or any other wireless router).
Linksys made fine products before Cisco bought them. Cisco is focused on large corporate deployments, not small users - abandonment of the Flip is evidence of that. Their individual consumer support is horrible.

  • I have a nokia siemens router. Can I use apple airport express with this to expand my wi-fi range

I HAVE A NOKIA SIEMENS ROUTER. THROUGH THAT I AM USIING WI-FI NETWORK AT MY HOME. I WANT TO EXTEND ITS RANGE SO I BUY AIRPORT EXPRESS. CAN I USE WITH THIS ROUTER

Please do not type in all capital letters. It is difficult to read and appears as if you are SHOUTING.
You can use the AirPort Express to provide more wireless coverage for your router if you connect an Ethernet cable from the router to the AirPort Express and configure it to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as your Siemens router.
If you are asking if you can use the Express to extend the wireless network using wireless only, it is extremely unlikely that this will work since Apple's "extend" a wireless network feature appears to work only with other Apple products.
As far as we know, it is not compatible with devices from any other manufacturer.

  • Is there any Macpro that plays well with FCPX?

Is there a Macpro out there that plays 3 cam 1920 x 1080 Pro Res multicam perfectly without dropping frames and still plays perfectly without rendering for things like dissolves?
My late model Imacs do this perfectly even with slow Lacie drives, but my mid 2010 3.33 GHZ Macpro with 24 GB of Ram and ATI 5770 graphics card is constantly reporting dropped frames, and not because of slow hard drives. And, strangelly, while it is reporting drop frames, and about 5 GiGS of memory used,  the CPU shows almost 80% idle!  Do I need a better graphics card or should I give up on Macpro? Or is there something wrong with the FCP programming?

  • XBOX 360 with Apple Airport Express/AIrport Extreme?

Well im about to buy an apple airport extreme wireless router for my house. The router is going to be located on the second floor with my cable modem. Planning to put my airport express in my room on the third floor.
So i am just wondering if you can directly plug in the xbox 360 ethernet cable to the airport express for xbox live.

...I will get a better connection using the Xbox wireless adapter and my Airport Extreme Base Station, than I do by connecting the Xbox via Ethernet to an Airport Express that is wirelessly connected to my AEBS?
    Yes
If I get the xbox wireless adapter, do I still need to configure my AEBS as WDS...
    No
...and could I get my old network communication speed back?
    Yes

  • I have a Cisco wireless router.  Can I buy an Airport Express plug in booster for a distant part of my house or do I need an Airport Extreme base station instead to make the Airport Express plug in booster work?

Can I buy an Airport Express plug-in wifi signal booster to connect to a Cisco wireless router, or do I have to buy an Airport Extreme base station to make the Airport Express plug-in work?

You would need either an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Express connected to the Cisco router, with a permanent Ethernet cable connection.
Configure the Extreme or Express that is connected to the Cisco router to "create a wireless network".
Then, you could add an AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage for the network that the Extreme or Express would be creating.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so it must be located where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" AirPort.
If you don't need the Cisco wireless signal, you could turn it off.....or use that network for guests or something similar.
The bottom line here......you always need two Apple routers if you want to extend the network wirelessly.

  • Movie camera that plays well with iPad.   Thanks!

I'm looking to buy my 10 year old, Spielberg obsessed, movie maker/director a camera for Christmas. I want something that she can use with my iPad or iMac with iMovie. She's fairly tech savvy and focused. Not sure what I will spend, but I'm keeping in mind that this is a ten year old.  Honestly, she'd be happy with an old super 8 if I could figure out how to edit something like that. She just loves writing, directing and shooting stories. Thanks for your recommendations.

Mac & iMovie compatible and perfect size for a tech savvy 10 year old: Canon VIXIA mini
The only way I can use my camcorders with iMovie for iPad involves downloading from camcorder to Mac and then syncing the clips to iPad.  Perhaps there is a more direct way, but I cannot find one.   Moving the clips to iPad for editing in iMovie for iPad seems like wasted effort to me to be no need to do that because my Mac already has iMovie for editing video clips, and Mac iMovie is easier to use for more complex edits.
The only reason I now use my iMovie for iPad is to edit clips that I record directly on my iPad.  That works fine.  If your iPad is iPad II or later, just letting her record directly to iPad with iMovie for iPad may be a good choice unless you KNOW you want her to have a separate camcorder.

  • 5th gen extreme does not play well with 1st gen express

I have extended my AP extreme (5th gen) with a 1st gen AP express. Once several devices connect (several iPhones/iPad) the network goes  'bad' after some undefined amount of time (maybe an hour or less). Symptoms are very slow internet access or devices dropping off wifi (except for my iMac which is close to the AP extreme). The AP express may disappear from the AP utility. The solution seems to be to reboot all AP's. I have reset the 1st gen to factory default several times.
All AP's are running latest firmware.
Before I give up and buy a new AP express, any ideas.

Would you agree that something is causing the connection problems?
Teens often hang out on bit torrent sites (videos...(don't ask )...games, other garbage) that demand more than the wireless can deliver. Things slow down and lock up on the network.
Might be a possibility. If things always seem to go downhill after the kids get online, that is probably a clue that they are on very demanding sites in terms of bandwidth.
Until you find out what that is....bit torrent sites.....a nearby cordless phone...other wireless networks or wireless security systems in the area, microwave interference, BlueTooth devices, etc....the problems will continue to repeat.
I once had a similar issue a few years.  The wireless would operate fine for 4-5 hours, sometimes a day or two and then suddenly slow down...sometimes crash. I spent days trying to locate the problem....took the devices to the Apple store, where they checked out perfect, etc.
Then, one day by accident as I was working at my desk in the home office, I noticed my neighbor....across the street....coming out of his house talking on his cordless phone whey my wireless network suddenly slowed to a crawl. By the time he got to his mailbox on the street, my wireless had crashed. Now I knew what was slowing down and crashing my wireless.
Fortunately, we were good friends, and he usually remembered to leave the cordless phone inside his house. But, when he didn't, I knew exactly where he was and what he was doing without even having to look out the window.

Re: Anyone still having IOS 6 wifi issues?
created by mpa9366 in Using iPad - View the full discussion
Having done a lot of reading today and having found a very good online tablet magazine (will post link tomorrow) there seems to be a few tech bods onto the problem.
The magazine I was reading identified wifi problems within hours of the ios 6 release and have been analysing since then with almost daily updates - the story seems to be:
The apple authenthication transmission is normal, it should slip through event prior to a full handshake with the host network being completed - however if not authenthicated then apple will not permit the device to connect (kills the connection) this is designed to protect apple from counterfeiting. So thats problem 1 if you dont receive a token from apple.
Problem 2 is that ios 6 only supports ipv6 (the new ip protocol) whereas outside silicon valley a large proportion of routers modems etc are still ipv4 protocol.
So youre locked into ipv6 in a world where ipv4 devices are everywhere and apple have not allowed for the ability to handle both protocols. This is like GM telling you your car requires an upgrade, everything will improve etc and as part of the upgrade fits a fuel cell motor and stays silent when their upgraded vehicles are simply parked up because they cannot get fuel.
A very basic expectation would have been dual protocol handling - we know the HW supports ipv4 as all wad fine on ios5.
So its going to be hit and miss with networks - more hit than miss in techy areas like silicon valley, but more miss in places like where I am - a small town in rural Switzerland.
Only apple can fix this with a patch to enable ipv4 protocol handling.
There you go. you just need to buy a new router, I'm sure Apple has one for sale, cause it's not there fault for sure.
Wonder why people start to migrate to other devices ?
