With iOS5 my contacts are all duplicated

I've just upgraded to iOS 5 on my iPad 2 and everything generally seems to have gone well, other than with my contacts.
They are synced via iTunes with Outlook 2007 but although the groups are only displayed once, the individual contacts within each group are duplicated.
I don't sync contacts with MobileMe or any other clients, so shouldn't be any reason for them to be duplicated.
When I remove the contacts via iTunes sync, it removes them all, but when I add them back it adds duplicates again.
Any suggestions how I can fix this?

I found the solution on an outside forum: http://forums.tipb.com/iphone-4s-forum/221242-iphone-4s-contacts.html
This seems to only affect Verizon devices. If you are not using Verizon, this fix will not work for you.
Here is the summary of the steps I took to correct the issue:
1) Open the Phone and dial *228. This is a Verizon over-the-air programming number.
2) When the system answer press 1 for "Program or activate your phone"
3) Wait for the call to disconnect. You should get a prompt stating something like, "Settings updated."
4) Open the Task Manager and kill the Phone, Message, and Contacts Applications
5) Wait a few minutes (I waited 3 just to be extra safe)
6) Open the Message App to verify the fix.
If you are still broken, kill the Message App again, then reboot your phone.

Are you syncing contacts over the air with an iCloud account or with an email account that supports syncing contacts over the air in addition to syncing contacts direct with a supported address book app on your computer via the iTunes sync process?

An icloud account is designed to be used by just one user.  If you have given your ID or set up your account on someone else's device, then their data will be mingled with your or worse.

It's not the iTunes account, it's Apple ID that iMessages gets distributed.

  • Contacts are all mixed up after upgrade to iOS 5!! PLEASE HELP!!

I'm new to the support fourms, so not sure if I'm posing in the right place. I've searched the previous threads and can't find an answer to my question. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
I have a iphone 4, hubby has a 3gs and we use mobileme for contacts, calander and email. We recelty installed the latest iTunes and updgraded to ios 5. Somewhere in this process, our contacts got COMEPELETY screwed up! Many are duplicated. But the biggest problem is that information is getting mixed up between contacts!!! So in other words, information from one contact is mixing in with others and it's impossible to tell where the info came from and how to get it back where it's supposed to be. I have a PC and run WIndows vista. I do not sync my contacts with Outlook or anything else.
In desepration I moved over to the iCloud (got rid of MobileMe) but that didn't make things better or worse.
Is there any way to salvage this situation? I have hundreds of contacts and I'm fearful they are all ruined now!
    Many thanks!!

Hi - I'm new to the support forum as well.
Appreciate this post was from October 2011 but there was no reply and I'm experiencing the same issue (albeit I have an iPhone 5) - did this issue get resolved?
Just rang technical support and the lady said she had a problem with her system and would call me straight back... but never did.
    Thanks in advance!

  • HT204150 My contacts are all gone, how do I get them back?

Somehow all my contacts are totally gone! Am I able to get them back?

If you didn't syncing the with iCloud prior to losing them, they would not be on icloud.com.  (You can double-check by going to icloud.com from your computer browser, signing into your account, then clicking Contacts.)
Assuming they aren't on icloud.com, your only option would be to try restoring them from your backup.  If you are backing up to your computer using iTunes, you can resotore your backup by connect your phone to your comptuer, opening iTunes, then going to File>Devices>Restore from backup.

  • HT5538 How do you created different apple ID's on same iTunes account? Wife and 2 kids contacts are all linked on my phone and got to separate! Any help would be appreciated!

My contacts are merging with wife, son and daughter. How do we create separate ID's but still maintain same iTunes account?

You can use separate AppleIDs for iCloud, iMessage and iTunes - you just need to create unique AppleIDs for the iCloud accounts if syncing contacts that way (you will need an email address that is not already registered as an AppleID though to get another AppleID).
Apps are different: purchases are tied to the AppleID used to log in to the store to make the purchase.  So you can create another AppleID for iTunes as well and use different ones on the different phones, but any apps you have already purchased with your existing AppleID are permanently tied to that AppleID.
So,  unless you are sharing apps, content and such, there is no reason to use the same AppleID on each  So the simplest solution is to create new AppleID(s) for other devices.  If you need an email address to do that, just get a gmail account (or any other free email account).
    Good luck

  • Contacts are all messed up

First switching contacts from my Torch 9800 to my Z10 was a nightmare. Now some seem to be on my phone and some on my sim card and when I try and transfer them it says some cannot be transfered. My big question is why are my contacts tied to an email address in the first place. Is there an option to just have contacts on my phone. No email required. That seemed to be part of my headache transfering from my torch to the Z10 is that some were with one email and some with another. I don't want them tied to any. If I look up a persons contact info they are in there once but if I hit text message and compose and type their name in they are in there two and some are in there three times all the same numbers. I'm guessing some are tied to several emails in my phone or maybe on my sim card and on my phone.

Pipo, I replied to your thread here: http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Z10/Z10-Contacts-with-Field-Pager/td-p/2233651

  • ICloud contacts are all gone

Does anybody know how to get your iCloud contacts back after they are gone. They just vanished on me on all devices and on iCloud.com and I did not delete them. I have turned the iCloud switch on and off again  and restarted my phone. My contact lists on both iOS devices, Macbook, and iCloud.com just disapeared along with my notes. They only thing I still have is my photo stream and email messages.
    Thanks

You might want to give it some time to see if it's just a server glitch that will correct itself.  Otherwise, you may be able to restore them from your iCloud backup by following Winston Churchill's user tip here: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4841.

  • In ios7, custom labels for phone contacts are all out of order. How can I get them back in alphabetical order?

    See above question.

I had tried that several times with no luck.  Late last night I was finally able to get through  to the Verizon technical support who then called in Apple technical support.  It took 1 1/2 hours for them to figure it out and guide me through a fix.  So here's the deal .......... I use Yahoo mail and had left the "contacts" button in the on position.  Apparently Yahoo likes to go into your contacts and gather information and can leave it in shambles.  My advice is, go to settings, then mail, contacts, calendars.  Select any and all of your email accounts and go in and turn off their access to your information.  Leave it on for Icloud but none of the others.
